Well well, look at what I seen today...

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) -- A 16-year-old boy patronizing a Walmart store in southern New Jersey took over the public-address system and ordered black people to leave, angering customers and prompting company leaders to apologize, police said Saturday.

Police said the boy, whose name is not being released because he is a juvenile, went on the intercom at Walmart's Washington Township store Sunday evening and calmly announced: "Attention, Walmart customers: All black people, leave the store now."

The teen was arrested Friday on charges of harassment and bias intimidation. Authorities said he was released to the custody of his parents; they did not know whether he had a lawyer.

"This was an extremely disturbing event on many levels," Gloucester County Prosecutor Sean Dalton said at a news conference. "Any statements like these that can cause harm or grave concern must be addressed as quickly we possibly can."

Dalton said the case would be handled in juvenile court in neighboring Atlantic County, where the boy lives. He would not say whether the boy has a criminal record, citing the teen's age, and would not disclose the teen's race, saying that did not factor into the investigation.

Authorities would not say whether the announcement was planned or made impulsively. Police said they were also investigating a teenage boy who accompanied the suspect to the store, but they had not charged the other boy.

Although a manager quickly went on the intercom system and apologized for the remark, many customers expressed their anger to store management. Some community members said Saturday that they've heard reports of similar incidents happening at the store in recent months that were not reported to police.

"We are concerned about that, and we're looking into these incidents. We want to work with the community to make sure these types of incidents don't happen," said Loretta Winters, president of the Gloucester County chapter of the NAACP.

Winters said she hopes the boy will get counseling and be educated about sensitivity so he can understand the consequences of his actions.

"I'm assuming this person didn't realize how hurtful his comments were," she said.

Officials for Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said the announcement was "unacceptable," and Dalton praised the company for its strong cooperation in the investigation.

"We're pleased this matter is resolved," Walmart spokesman David Tovar said in a statement issued after the news conference. "We have updated our intercom system at this store to prevent this from happening again. We again apologize to all of our customers and associates who had to listen to something so offensive."

The incident was the latest in a series of problems the retailer has had in its dealings with minorities and women.

There have been several past instances of black customers claiming they were treated unfairly at Walmart stores, and the company faced lawsuits alleging that women were passed over in favor of men for pay raises and promotions.

In February 2009, the retailer paid $17.5 million to settle a class action lawsuit alleging racial discrimination in its hiring of truck drivers.

And the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sued the company in May 2009, claiming some Hispanic employees at a Sam's Club subsidiary in California were subjected to a hostile work environment. That suit alleges managers failed to stop repeated verbal harassment, including the use of derogatory words, against employees of Mexican descent.

However, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has said the company has worked hard in recent years to show it cares about diversity.

I worked for Wal-Mart for about a decade, and although I dont work there anymore, I think its silly and childish to consider boycotting a store for something one person did, that nobody else had control over. It was most likely some stupid small minded customer, being a racist asshat. Is that Wal-Mart's fault? Of course not.

The stores are set up to have phones everywhere, without those phones, employees would be running around all over the place trying to contact who they needed, and very little would get done. Countless times throughout the day, I would need to call up for prices, or customer concerns etc....
Not every department needs to have a desk, so most of the phones are just on poles throughout each area. Unfortunately, something like this happened, which causes people to wonder why the phones are in plain reach, but if you look at how often those phones are needed, and how isolated this incident is, that is where they need to be. Also, there are many cameras in the store, but not every single area is covered, or even on at one time. To catch a shoplifter takes a lot more than a camera....not only that, but, just to give you an idea, the Wal-Mart I worked in was not a superstore, just a normal sized big box store, no produce or anything, and we were allowed half a million dollars in losses, each year, before we were penalized....that would be, in thief we did not catch....just food for thought...yes there are a lot of cameras, but eyes can not be in all places at all times.....

That's why I buy in bulk a lot on ebay... super cheap and if one or two things don't fit then heck, still saved a bunch of money.
I got my wedding dress off ebay... from china. It cost me about $150 with shipping and it was a dress that would have been close to 1000.00 off the rack here and it was perfect. I'm all about saving, and taking chances ;)
Which reminds me... I have to find a dress for a wedding... sigh. At least finding a dress is better than finding pants that fit decent.

I'm hit or miss...I usually love to shop but for other people. Sometimes for me...but there has to be good stuff on the clearance racks...if it isn't on sale it can't come home with me.

Thank you sunset for realising that this is no reason to boycott, there are more nonchildish/mature reasons to do so. But anyone could get to these phones...they have them at the fitting room for easy access, the hunting/recreational (not sure exactly what it's called) section, paint section and I think some stores have them hanging on colums throughout the store or they use to (it might be KMart that did that). Point is if there is no one in customer service, around the fitting room, or the hunting/recreational equipment and painting section...it's going to offer the perfect opportunity for some dumba$$ to show some class (kidding).

HOLY MACKERAL! THIS IS HORRENDOUS! I LOVEEEEEEE BLACK PEOPLE! Their skin is sooooo beautiful, their eyes just twinkle, and i love the sista' talk with all my heart. My daughters first and favorite babydoll was a little black one, with the cutest pouty bottom lip. We have added more to her collection through the years...and yess we've purchased some of them at Wal-Mart! Think if I bought out all of the those precious dolls I'd make a good point? Heaven knows somebody needs to and it should be a serious impression making moment!

I am so sorry this has happened. It is heart shattering and WRONG WRONG WRONG! You dear folks have a scent sweet as honey and we "honkies" just smell like CHICKEN! UUUGGHHHH....HA ;O). Hope I get a few smiles about that and am not booted from this group! Oh yeahhh no topic off limits...this is a safe place to say EXACTLY WHAT'S ON MY MIND!

If anybody wants to address this please come see me at my sparkpage. I am not good about getting back here to check the board very often, and I LOVEEEE COMPANY!!!

emoticon P.S.

I wouldnt allow myself to be deprived of the fabulous prices at wal-mart because one person got on a microphone, seriously.

I have rarely had anything break from wal-mart that I brought. It is MY view that any product will break over time or from overuse or misuse OR just normal wear and tear.

also........ when something broke like the strap on a sneaker MONTHSSSSSSSSSSS after I purchased it... I took it back because thats $18 of my hard earned money and I expect my sneakers to last. Do you know that Wal-mart took back my WORN sneakers and let me get a NEW pair of sneakers? YES they did. Great customer service I tell ya :) and thats what helps me come back over and over again.. confidence in my shopping FUN and confidence in that Walmart stands behind their products. YEH wal-mart!

(okay puts down her wal-mart cheerleading pom poms and continues chatting LOL)

I loveeeeeeee shopping at walmart, the family store and if some people do not like to shop there... high five to ya.... go elsewhere and let us wal-mart lovers continue on. I know people at work who have NEVER stepped in a walmart store because they honestly felt that walmart was beneath them and only for the poor or working poor and my response.... is like "whatever". Go ahead and spend $80.00 for a sweat shirt and I will go and spend $10.00 or lower at walmart. (shrugs) To each his or her own... its about FREEDOM of choice and we can ALL have FUN shopping regardless of where we shop and irregardless of the color of skin, etc.

girllllllllllllll and don't get me started on those NEW sneakers out in fashion now called something like stetchers.... I looked it up online and it was like $125.... emoticon are you kidding me? come on now! just Stop! A top dog at work told me ... well you get what you pay for and I was like okay... YOU continue spending $800 for a pair of designer eye glasses (seriously that person did spend that much money) and I will keep shopping on MY budget and still have money left over :) holla!

sorry, I just had to put that out there... I tend to ramble about topics I feel passionate about and money is passionate LOL gigglingggggggggg.

(some call me frugal.. I call myself a WISE fun-filled shopper) hugs

emoticon I truly do have compassion for people who feel passionate about any topic they partake in or want to share for real, that is their right and stuff like that as it is all of our rights of self expression, so its all good and we love and support one another :) THATS the important thing, smiles.

I just like having fun and stuff like that and no matter what store I enter into... I just make it a FUN experience and discovery and intrigue lol

emoticon last note:

emoticon Customer service emoticon dosent come in any particular color.... its caring for the customer and hoping that service that is provided to them will encourage them to return and clearly I keep returning emoticon

I lovvvvvvve to shop, so why not shop at a place that has LOW affordable prices which leaves ME MORE money in my purse to shop some more there or elsewhere or on another day. Like I also love shopping at thrift stores... why pay FULL price when I can pay a fraction of a price, get what I need and STILL have money in my purse.

To me it just makes sense to spend money wisely, save some and then like go shopping again. lol

..... I am NOT knocking anyone who has more money to spend or is rich, whatever.... if you want to pay more then high five to you as I am sure you delight in the same way I do when shopping :) so no knocks to anyone.... I just like having and creating FUN!

emoticon

ME = Woman of color responding on this topic.

1. Wal-mart has lots and lots of camera's around... they KNOW who did that announcement on the loud speaker, come on now.

2. I loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeee shopping at wal-mart. I am a walmart girl, shop there several times per week. The store is huge, offers a variety of foods and items at affordable prices, end of story.

3. I shop at several wal-marts in mixed neighborhoods and white neighborhoods.... but the employees and customers are the same... people of a variety of color. I have never been dis-respected in wal-mart and if that was to EVER occur I would put that person in check in a heart beat and report it to the Manager and in writing. (Momma don't play that)

4. I think wal-mart (aka: Walley world) is loadsssssssssssss of FUN.

so no I would never boycott or stop shopping at walmart, bottom line.

What I do expect is for walmart to announce who exactly made that comment because if they can catch a thief on video, you know dang well they can SEE who touched that microphone.

NOT to mention... I am assuming that the microphone would be BEHIND a counter like in customer service... so how can customers/consumers get ACCESS to the walmart store microphone to make such an announcement??? Inquiring minds wanna know :)

My three favorite stores:
1. Wal-mart
2. Home Depot
3. Thrift stores

I do not really boycott wallmart, but I will admit it is not my favorite place..

My sons first job was there.. he worked in the garden department and loved it (he loves being outdoors and doing things)..his boss had no bad words to say against him, he actually praised my son for several weeks.. until one day...

a customer came in.. john was mostly behind scenes as in stocking the plants on shelves and arranging things outside, he could and did help customers when there were not many staff on the floor, but if there were other employees and all on floor he was to let them handle the customers until he was fully trained in that area..

well john saw this guy try to go to like three different pple and getting no help.. the guy even tried to get the bosses attention but the boss guy was busy on phone with someone. after a few minutes of this and john overheard what the guy needed and so knew what to help him with, he went to the customer and said something like 'excuse me, i see you need help, can I help you?' the guy was happy and john helped him, the boss checked the guy out and said 'so what did you think of our floor trainee here, did he assist you properly?' and the customer was like 'he is the only one here he bothered to even notice me, he is the only one here who seemed capable of doing his job, i hope he is the only one i ever have to deal with when i come back'.

An hour later, john was fired.

John asked him 'why am i being fired? all these past few weeks you have been bragging about how well I am doing my job and even the customers I help are happy with me!?" the boss was like 'well, perhaps there have been to many complaints about your helping the customers and the complaints got back to me'.

and that was all that was said by the boss.

we later found out from someone who worked there for years, that the boss was pissed that a customer chastised him in front of most of his employees and praised johnny, making him look bad. Said a lot of people were walking on their toes after that, to afraid to get overly noticed by customers

now THAT'S sad..

My son loves where he is now, been there for a few yrs, and has won several 'prizes' (five dollar gift cards) each month since he began for great customer service.. the store hires secret shoppers, and they visit all the departments, the employee who is the most helpful and HAPPY about it is the one who wins.. they finally had to tell the meat division where my son works that they no longer are able to be part of the secret shopper because john so far has won 90% of the secret shopper gift cards, and they want the other departments to win.. johns union isnt overly happy with that, saying that if they want to win, they should work harder then john and earn it.. so hopefully soon he can win the secret shopper thing *grins*

well walmarts loss is gerbes super stores gain.

Oh yes, great sight. It annoys me that people go out in public looking like complete trash...take care of yourself, look decent. These women with their big boobs sticking out of the sides of their sleeveless shirts and tank tops and their shorts that are too small are not very becoming. I don't care what anyone wears cause I've been in pajamas before but to look nasty and unbathed is unacceptable lol I really hate it when the kids have to be present for this crime against ones self.

you are sooo right on the bene thing, i ahve seen them and it is pathetic, they really dont even cover routine screenings--but that is a totally other topic.
I have not really had any problems with the wal-mart were i live other than they seem to be slowly but surely getting rid of my favorite brands that i eat (ie weight watchers yogurt, south beach diet frozen foods and even the healthy choice selection is dwindling) so soon i will be shoping at publix or taget but until then i will hit up the wallyworld.

Although someone was obviously stupid in making the remark, I don't think it is Wal-Mart's fault. If it was an employee, I'm sure they will be fired, and if it was a customer, there is nothing they can do about that except make it more difficult to make pages. Either way, it was one person's opinion out of the thousands and thousands of people who work for Wal-Mart and the millions who shop at Wal-Mart. One person does not make up the entire thought for the company.

I agree with you that their ability to keep customers off their phones (if it were a customer) is lacking. I don't feel I'm defensive at all, I'm just disagreeing with you about how you feel about it. I still don't feel this problem is a reflection of Walmart, don't think I ever will..I don't think I can. And no I don't...although I'd love to be a lucky person and invest in a company and it take off like Microsoft did many years ago. I'm sorry if you feel I'm attacking you or anyone elses opinions with the situation but I'm not, just disagreeing.

Yeah JD...I never bought any groceries at Wal-Mart even before the boycott...I like to buy stuff direct from the farms and if that's not possible I go to the grocery store that has a proven high turnover for produce and meat. If a store doesn't run out of stuff then their stuff isn't fresh.

And yeah it says alot about Wal-Mart as a whole...you don't see reports about Target and the others with such lax security. You seem very defensive about our freedom to dislike the store for any reasons we feel warranted...do you have shares in Wal-Mart or something?

I know how to read but thank you so much for your concern on that issue so many people have a problem with. I'm not being disrespectful at all, I'm very calmly, unlike you, telling you how I feel about your comments. I, unlike you, feel the way people are taking this one persons comment against Walmart a tad bit extreme. This has nothing to do with the products they sell or a more serious matter, how they treat their employees. They are doing the right thing by apologizing for what this person said because it was said in their store over their system. I am already a minority, for the most part, thank you and I have a better tolerance for many different races, religion, etc as oppose to my family and others who think differently then I. Oh and by the way, I know this isn't the reason you boycott Walmart, it's your toaster experience.

Perhaps you should re-read a few of your comments...talk about disrespecting opinions...

And as CLEARLY stated in my original post this is not the reason I have a boycott on Wal-Mart...again it requires some reading skills...and people are free to boycott whichever business they want for whatever reasons they want whether or not you approve is not one of the requirements.

Being that you are so young wait 10-15 years until you are a minority and we'll check back in then.

You are turning a comment said by one idiotic person into a tirade against Walmart as a whole..I guess it's bringing up bad memories for you 2unhealthy. No matter what good or bad Walmart would do you'd still have negative things to say about them because they are Walmart. I still don't see why the comment made by one idiot would make you boycott the business. Any person with common sense would know that wasn't a real Walmart announcement to customers...

I hate any discussion when race is the topic...one idiot just has to start problems some way. I do like conversation and not disrepecting anyone's opinion.

Thanks JD...see I think that for all they may have lower prices there quality is about as good as the dollar store junk and you have to replace it quicker so really you aren't saving any money. And they don't have fair wages and benefits and yeah I know a job is a job in this economy but Mcdonald's has better benefits.

One person did it so how can you be mad at a store as a whole? I could have easily walked up and did it myself, or anyone for that matter..employee or customer, it's still not Walmarts fault. For all we know it was a mexican who said it.

Being told whatever by an employee (unless you're being an ass to them to begin with for something that's not their fault and don't understand it's not their fault) then you're right.

That's your opinion for boycotting and I respect that, my opinion on people boycotting for a reason like this is childish. Find the person who said it and kick their ass or whatever you choose to...doesn't matter to me. And no, I don't see violence as the answer, just saying lol

If they would have said all fat white girls leave the store, I'd still feel the same.

I only have a boycott on one store... Best Buy. That store is BS, that was the GPS incident ;) Everyone has the right to boycott whatever they want for whatever reason they want.

And so far everyone who responded is white...I'd like to hear from some people of color...and anything that goes against my principles and values is a reason to boycott any store...that's the right I have as a money spender.

I currently have boycotts on:

JCPenny (although I don't think there are even any in Canada well not here at least)that stems from a hand bag sale incident in 1999 or 2000.

K-Mart (and we don't have any of those anymore either her in Canada)since the VCR incident in 1997 or 1998

Wal-Mart (and they are every-damn-where) since the toaster incident of 2009.

Sears (I don't care where they are) since the price comparison incident of 2002.

There are stories to go with all of those and perhaps I'm intolerant of idiots but if you expect me to give you my hard earned cash you had better treat me like a paying customer...example...being told "Whatever"(you know the one with attitude) by a clerk is never, in my books, acceptable customer service.

Anyone that's boycotting Walmart because of this is going on the extreme...you can't help what one idiot did, it's not Walmarts fault either. Some will probably say it is because they have phones in the middle of the store where anyone could grab but come on, it's not their fault..even if an employee said it, it's not their fault. Everyone has the right to be mad but to be mad at Walmart isn't fair to them.

They may have had this incident in New Jersey but here in Florida the majority of Walmart employees are African American.
I'd love to hear about the toaster incident, 2unhealthy. I'm not saying I like Walmart, I hate shopping there. But your going to have morons where ever you go, not just walmart.

I think there are a lot of reasons not to shop at walmart, I just don't think this is one of them. It easily could have been a customer being a big a$$ or if it's an employee I'm sure they will be sh*t canned. You can't always control how people act in your business... other wise Chuck E Cheese would probably be shut down... (ever read about all the crap that goes down in Chuck E Cheese? Good lord!)

I'm all about Target myself...

I worked at Walmart in between my senior year of high school and leaving for college. It's kind of scary. There are mandatory morning meanings where you have to cheer, just strange and the people that work there become increasingly "interesting" as the years go by.

As for the announcement over the pa system, all of the phones have little cards explaining what buttons to push to do what. A 7 year old could have done it...which makes it even more sad that although smart enough to figure out how to operate a machine a 7 year old can, the person was not smart enough to distinguish between wrong and right...

By Bruce Shipkowski, The Associated Press

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. - An announcement at a Walmart store in New Jersey ordering black people to leave brought chagrin and apologies Wednesday from leaders of the company, which has built a fragile trust among minority communities.
A male voice came over the public-address system Sunday evening at a store in Washington Township in southern New Jersey and calmly announced: "Attention Walmart customers: All black people leave the store now."
Shoppers in the store at the time said a manager quickly got on the public address system and apologized for the remark. And while it wasn't clear whether a rogue patron or an employee was responsible for the comment, many customers expressed their anger to store management.
"I want to know why such statements are being made, because it flies in the face of what we teach our children about tolerance for all," said Sheila Ellington, of Monroe. She and her friend, Patricia Covington, were in the store at the time and have said they now plan to boycott the retailer.
Officials with Wal-Mart Stores Inc., based in Bentonville, Ark., said that the announcement was "unacceptable" and that they're trying to determine who made it - whether an employee or a rogue patron - and how it happened.
"We are just as appalled by this incident as our customers," the company said in a statement Wednesday. "Whoever did this is just wrong and acted in an inappropriate manner. Clearly, this is completely unacceptable to us and to our customers."
This is not the first time the retailer has faced such problems.
There have been several past instances of black customers claiming they were treated unfairly at Walmart stores, and the company faced lawsuits alleging that women were passed over in favour of men for pay raises and promotions.
However, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has said the company has worked hard in recent years to show it cares about diversity.
Bill Mitchell, a former Walmart employee who shopping Wednesday at the store, said that he was saddened to hear about the announcement but that "as a black man, I've heard worse things."
As she left the store Wednesday, customer Sharon Osbourne of Williamstown called the announcement "appalling, stupid and sad."

Holy crap!! Can you imagine? What the hell is wrong with people? Good reason I already have a boycott on Wal-Mart since the toaster incident at Christmas time...another story entirely...but now I know I'll never shop there again. I encourage you all to do the same.
