I don't know what happened. I examined each fish carefully before disposing of their poor little carcasses. I didn't see anything specific apart from what I felt was a bloated belly. But they didn't have any unusual spots, damage to their fins, their scales weren't protruding ... nothing. Water parameters were high in nitrates but still normal ammonia levels. But this was something that had been going on for a long time.

It's possible they died from prolonged exposure to elevated nitrates. I'm not sure. It's interesting though, that they were all the same type of fish purchased at the same time.

My mom & dad asked me later that day what sort of fish I would buy to replace them!! Oy! I said, NONE! My dad made me tear down my quarantine tank because it was just sitting there running w/o fish in it .. the cats kept jumping on it & falling in. So I don't have a place to quarantine therefore no new fish. Ha! So there dad!

Stay calm and carry on.

I don't know what the cause is but I'm sure sorry that happened. Some sort of internal parasites maybe? That could account for 3 dying at once. I lost 2 bettas recently, one to age and one to an angelfish that became aggressive. I agree, losing fish is SAD!!

Oh dear! I've had THREE fish die this morning! All of them the same type of fish - beautiful long-finned Serpae tetras. OMG I feel awful when my fish die. All 3 are bloated - not sure what disease might be causing it..water parameters are same as they always are...but I did a water change anyway.

I will have to dig out my fish diseases book. If anyone has any ideas tho I'm all ears! emoticon

Stay calm and carry on.
