Resistance bands to work. I use a resistance band in one of my Pilates workouts and I notice it working. You just need to make sure that you resist both ways, not just when you're stretching it.

I'm a big fan of push-ups for arm muscles. I started with 1 or 2 between commercials if I was watching something or between folding stuff. I'm up to 10-15 in a row now.

Good luck.

I love what you had to say on this Ace. Its so true! I too always gave up due to the scale/measuring tape. I am going to do the same and focus on how I feel etc. Also how my clothing begins to fit me differently.
And to keep telling myself its a journey NOT a destination. Before I would be looking ahead thinking about when I can stop eating right and exercising once I lose the weight. We all know where that leads us dont we?!
I cant wait to look down and see my knees clearly! hehe.

That's always been the catalyst for me giving up... The scale/measuring tape that wouldn't decrease in numbers... They had soooooo much power over me.

This time, I've taken the focus off the numbers, the scale and the measuring tape. I do use them, but as guidelines for my progress.

This time, I'm focusing on how I'm feeling and the different changes in my body that I didn't notice before because the scale/tape had me blinded... Like the other day when I was in the shower I twisted a certain way, and generally when I twist I feel a fat roll pop over my hip bone on the back side... That day, the roll-pop didn't happen. I had to look in the mirror and I noticed that my back is shaping up, it's losing the fat rolls and its a new focus that I'm happy to think about. Before, I never would have payed attention to the different part of my body, but I'm different now and different parts changing totally balance what the scale/tape doesn't reflect. I also have shapely knees... Who'd've thought shapely knees would be a highlight of my day?

It's hard to learn not to let the scale/tape dictate how we feel, but it's more enjoyable focusing on me and what changes are going on.

Stay positive...

minilover that happens to me all the time! I might not lose anything for a few weeks, and then drop 3-5 in quick succession. Hang in there. If it lasts more than a week or too, then think about shaking up your routine a little.

Yes minilover- I heard that happens when you have been on a new diet change for a while. Your doing really great though, so keep it up. It is working!
I'm on week two. I am down 3 lbs today for a total of 8. Since I am having my TOM, I think it could have been another lb. off.
I am enjoying the first months losses as I know that it will come to a much slower loss soon.
But I will be excited when I hit the first 10 lbs. mark.

I am a little bummed out today because I weighed myself and I stayed the same and I didn't lose any inches this week. I stayed on track and did everything I was suppose to but still stayed the same. I guess this happens to everyone so I guess I should just brush it off and realize that I need to stay positive to obtain my goal. Good luck to all.

I will do what I need to do in order to do what I want to do.

Hi Cin3dee,

Good for you. Remember, you are far too important to punish yourself for an argument that takes at least 2 people in order to participate!!Keep up the good work!

Cindy, exercise is great for stress. I know at work, when things get really bad, just cruising around the perimeter 2-3 times often tends to calm me down and feel better. Plus once you get in the routine, exercise can often put you in a place where you can deal with any new stress much better. If I get cranky, hubby will often ask me if I've exercised lately...and usually, when I think about it, I'd been slacking off for a day or to.
The only reason I might step back from exercise is for physical reasons. If it's lack of sleep, I'll start out a little slower and easier and try to work up the intensity when the fog starts to lift and the body works a little smoother.
As for ratios, your tracker will give you ranges. When I add in my own foods I always add info for carbs/fat/protein...and usually iron, calcium and fiber. If you're using sparks food lists, they've generally added all that stuff for you. The hard part is figuring out where you need to be in those ranges...since we all have different needs/issues. I try to eat at the lower end of the carb range, and I struggle to get in the low end of protein most days.
And just remember...you're worth every minute of time that you put into taking care of yourself!

Cin3dee,

Congratulations on getting out of a very unhappy situation and then allowing yourself to find a husband who is totally opposite of the abuser. That's a hard thing to do. As woman, we tend to choose badly more than once! You deserve a lot of credit for avoiding that trap! Go do your workout and make sure you get "me" time every single day!!! We all need to make that decision as we all need some time for just us!!! I'm going to a Zumba class tonight even though I should stay home & vacuum - the dust will be there tomorrow or maybe Sunday!!

Cheers

Cin3dee,

GOOD GIRL!!!!!!!!!! We're all proud of you!! I read your blog about being an abused spouse - I work in a police dept and unfortunately see far too much of it. Keep in mind he can no longer harm you in any way. You are important and need to take care of yourself!! Enjoy your "me" time!! You deserved it and need it!!!

Does anyone know what the ratios should be for fat , carbs, etc. per day?? Is there a place on SP that tells you what the guide lines are for this?? I am doing well on my calorie range, but have NO idea how I am doing with the rest.
I think part of the problem with me not being able to keep track well, is that I do not log all the carbs etc. into my meals when I put them up on my nutrition page. Is it really important to monitor these as well as your calories?

CIN3DEE1 - I agree with MOM2GINGER...you should definitely exercise!!! I'm a stresser and exercise helps me. When I'm mad or upset, it helps!!! Please do it still. Also you can't give up...there will be good and bad days / times...those are the times to turn to that release (of exercise). I also do not know what the argument was about, but you do have to think about yourself (I'm still learning this, and one of my other groups on Sparks, always reminds me that it is okay to think of yourself!!!). As for going to visit your family in MA, do what you want, but if you do stay home, makes sure you will not be staying home to be all stressed and miserable. If going will help you relax...go. But only YOU know what is best (since we do not know what happened). I wish you the very best! Remember you matter and eating right, exercising, is what is best for you. You can do it!!! I hope all works out. God bless.

All smiles...

Hi Cin3dee,

Absolutely you should exercise. Do NOT let anyone interfere with time for yourself!!!! I don't know what your argument was about, but you need to do this for yourself!! If you don't visit your family in MA, then do something else for yourself! Make some time for an "all about me" time!!!! Go shopping, read a book take the dog for a walk, watch a movie - whatever, as long as it's for you!!! And keep in mind it's OK for a little "all about me" time! Stay strong!

Cheers

Good morning NH SP. I did not sleep well last night after a major family argument. I am really tired. Should I push myself to workout , or take it easy?? I am on day 5 of my exercise program.
Oh- something I realized last night after my argument. I almost wanted to quit trying to lose the weight. I think I just felt so low about the fighting that I once again, was ready to feel as if I do not deserve to be good to myself.
Anyway, I canceled my weekend plans to go visit family in ma. I cant put myself in such a vulnerable situation. I might end up blowing it if I go. Im still way too hurt and angry. emoticon

CIN3DEE1 - I had this problem too. I tried that checking thing off and stuff, and it did not work, for me. It has been happening to many people due to those new e-mails they send out now (talks about what is going on in the groups you belong too). Anyways, if it doesn't work like someone suggested below, you can e-mail the technical people. I did that, went to their message board page and lots of people were having the same problem. I e-mailed them and by the end of the day, it was working again.

Good luck! All smiles... emoticon

I had that problem once before too and what I did was go into your e-mail section and un-check all your checks - have it accept your changes - close out and re-open your account again - and go back and re-check them all again and have it accept it all over again - that did it for me - hope it helps - remember to close out and sign back in - seems to reactivate it or something.

I think my biggest problem with the eating is the sodium. I have no problem staying within my fat/protein/carb ranges, and I'm actually usually under my calorie range, but I always have a lot of sodium. Any suggestions? My food tracker is public if you want to look.

haaha that is awesome - and lateral lunges are so hard too. . .good for her -

I have to agree with you all we need to find our own path and walk the walk - this has to be a lifestyle we are willing to live with forever not just a month or 2 - we need to work in a plan to exercise on a consistant basis and manage our food and drink on a daily basis to keep our bodies healthy and happy. so one step at a time, one meal at a time, one choice at a time - we can make it happen. don't get discouraged - it took all this time to put on the wieght - it will take time to get it off. with effort and support we can do it.

I have officially come to this conclusion: Rocking a 21 lb baby to sleep for 20-30 minutes should definitely be considered strength training! When my wife rocks him to sleep, she likes to do the latteral lunges. Whatever works, right?

I agree, each of us has our own journey and there are no guarantees that we'll be able to sustain this momentum the rest of our lives. But we can sure try. My favorite saying is "There is no failure in trying". I tell this to my kids all the time. This takes away any shame that may come with "falling off the wagon". You just have to get right back up and try again.

I had heard Bob say that on the Biggest Loser last week that a lot of the contestants had gained their weight back. It had me thinking more about their journey vs my (or anybody's) journey. There's not much difference - sure they've got trainers, 24hr access to gyms and people to teach them and monitor them... But I've got that too. Just not handed to me. I've got a "gym" in my basement - which has seen more of me in the past two weeks than the past 4 months. I've got the internet, books, magazine, and you guys for educational tools/resources/and motivation.

I've learned that just because I have these tools and resources doesn't meant that the weight is magically going to come off, or that my pant size is going to decrease. I've learned, a lot especially in these past 2 weeks, that I can do this and I am doing this.

I like your favorite saying, Holly, that's been my hidden mantra that's been dusted off. I'm not perfect but I can certainly progress.

Thanks!

did anybody get to see Oprah yesterday? she had Eric on from BL, I forget what season he was on but he won, had lost over 200 lbs. Now he's gained 100 back but I was so proud of him to go on her show and talk about it. She also had this woman on who years ago when Oprah lost her weight, this woman did the same thing, became a competitive body builder and looked awesome at age 50. Well she gained the weight back too and talked about how embarssing it was cause she lived in a small town and she had been famous for being on Oprah. She said she was too embarassed to go back to her gym. But then she watched Oprah come clean and it gave her inspiration so she went back.

it just goes to show me (again!) that weight loss like we all deal with is a journey and there is nothing to be ashamed about when we gain back or have other setbacks. It gave me so much encouragement to hear these stories to know that I'm not alone in not being "perfect" when it comes to losing weight. I am reminded again of one of my favorite sayings:

"We seek progress, not perfection."

And that's why I have a plow guy! and kids! LOL. I'm so afraid of throwing out my back you guys, that I decided to skip the gym today. Hey I went Sunday in the storm so I think that gives me enough cudos to take a day off right?

ok...I'll still do my cardio today :)

I've been part of this team for a while. Great to see someone stepped up to take over...thank-you!

Just checking in and saying hello New Hampshire! Lets keep moving! I know it's hard in all this snow, but then shoveling is exercise! Sledding is fun with our little ones too! Good luck to you all. I'll try to check in more often now. God bless.

Smiles...

Hey Jen (sorry it took me so long to reply - crazy week)...

I've never run anything, the most I can do is 1/2 a mile on my treadmill. I've never been much of a runner, even when I was a kid and very active I avoided running. It's one of my biggest obstacles, but I'm still not sure it's one I want to overcome so I'm not quite ready to start training for one.

I hope your week went well and you're able to get the workouts in and that the stretches are helping.

Way to go both of you! that is awesome! I tend to do that to myself too. . .not want to go and do it but when I do I'm happy I did - today is the first day for me that I don't want to do my workout - but I'm heading right now to go and do it - my shoulders are still so sore from all the snow removal work at work (car dealership) and then home (horses) then level 2 of jillian's 30 day shred - so much arm and shoulder work - they just were burning most of the day today. . so not looking forward to flaring them back up, but I'm going to do it. . .this has been a good week and I'm not going to let it set me back! thanks for the pep talk!

although I was looking for any excuse to not do my strength training today, I somehow coaxed myself out of bed and did it. And I'm glad I did.
It feels so good to be back on track!!!

I am doing well today. Ate healthy even though I didn't really want to. I even exercised...even though I didn't really want to!

Hi Ace1012
I just worked out today for the 1st time since July. The foot felt really good, now I have no more excuses. I do have to remind myself to really stretch my feet and shins, don't want to feel that pain again. I think it hurt more than when I broke my ankle. I want to get to the point again where I can try and do another 5k. Have you ever run in any local 5k's?

Jen

Hey Jen... I know how you feel with the P.F.(I cant' spell it either, let alone say it emoticon ), it curbed me for a while, too. My podiatrist gave me some great "runner" stretches and modified them to make sure my calves get stretched before and after workouts. Crazy how the calves affect the feet.

It's sometimes a pain the amount he wants me to do (4 reps of 4 styles 4 times a day, holding for 20 seconds), but it's helped a lot. Also the Ryka brand of sneakers is the only ones that help... All the other ones I've had seem to enhance the P.F. making workouts unbearable.

Good luck!

Felt good to officially start the challenge today. I've got my stats and goals set up and even put up a couple of new photos from christmas...though standing between a size 2 and a size 4 daughter (even with both of them preggers)doesn't leave a woman feeling her "smallest" lol.
I'm hoping to take my exercise outside tomorrow and check out conditions at some of the local forest trails---since it seems to be a little bit warmer than it was thank goodness!!

Yeah it is Friday and I'm excited to start our challenge in the morning - remember to post your starting stats if you are going to - it is really a great tool because it holds you accountable to the group and not just your journal - remember we are here as a team for support and motivation - so let's band together and reach for our goals!

Thought I would start a place for a general discussion - anything goes here - talk about the weather - ask questions - having a bad day - share it - get it off your chest so you can move forward - it will help if you can do that.
