The Texan's Wedding Night Wager - Charlene Sands - 2.5*

This was an interesting read, but it seemed to just end without a really satisfying conclusion. The title does not have anything to do with the story, since it is not about a wedding night either.

No one walked away from this Texas mogul...especially not his wife! So when Cara chose to leave rather than play second fiddle to his company, Kevin plotted his revenge. Four years later, she returned, intent on finalizing their divorce. But Cara had no clue that Kevin had constructed the perfect payback plan. It's a wager she can't refuse. The divorce would be official...if she agreed to one last week of playing house. And nothing would be off-limits.

15) Splintered Bones by Carolyn Haines 4 stars

Sarah Booth Delaney is a Mississippi Delta PI, a Daddy's Girl drop-out. Her friend Lee has confessed to killing her husband - can Sarah Booth prove she didn't? She's overwhelmed by those who wanted to kill the lout. A cosy Southern mystery. (Oh, and there's a ghost)

16) Hour of the Hunter by J. A. Jance 3 stars

Definitely NOT a cosy mystery - this one is set in the desert and Indian country of Arizona. Serial killer Andrew Carlisle is released from prison, and is determined to get revenge on the women who put him there. He starts killing on the first day out. Confusing time switches, Native American tales, the mystical and murderous mixed together.

17) "Scuse Me While I Kill This Guy by Leslie Langtry 4 stars

The Bombay family has a tradition going back 4000 years - they're professional assassins - when they say "I could just kill someone", they really mean it. Despite this theme, this is a light-hearted cosy of sorts. Gin (Virginia) Bombay is tasked by the family council to find the mole and take him out. She doesn't believe it when the evidence stacks up against her brother Dakota. (They all have place names). Oh, and, oops, one of her contracts for the family happens to be the guy her new love interest is the bodyguard for. Awkward! emoticon

the postcard killers by james patterson and liza marklund- audio-2 stars

From AudioFile
Someone is killing young and the beautiful couples all over Europe. Katherine Kellgren, Erik Singer, and Reg Rogers bring all the terror and excitement to life with a dizzying array of accents from the European nations and a conversational skill that moves the story along quickly and seamlessly. Their delivery makes the listener fully relate to New York detective Jack Kanon, who is obsessed with bringing his daughter's killers to justice. Kanon and a Swedish reporter figure out the pattern and the meaning of the sinister postcards that are sent to reporters after each killing. Kellgren, Singer, and Rogers speak with such authority and passion that the book seems frighteningly real.

24 hours by greg isles- 3 stars

From Publishers Weekly
HAs close to family fare as a kidnapper-rapist-extortionist thriller can get, Iles's (The Quiet Game) latest brilliantly plotted tale walks the razor's edge between cinematic excess and bone-chilling suspense. Joe Hickey is a Southern redneck with an Ivy League talent for evil. He has trained his grossly huge, mentally challenged cousin, Huey, and his gorgeous, exotic-dancer, live-in lover, Cheryl, to work with him as part of a tightly controlled kidnap/extortion squad targeting Mississippi physicians' families while the doctors are off at conferences. But he hits a snag when Dr. Will Jennings, his wife, Karen, and their five-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Abby, prove as resourceful solo as they are formidable in tandem. Joe grabs Abby, turning her over to Huey, who drives her off to a remote forest cabin near Jackson; meanwhile, Joe stays behind to terrorize Karen in the Jennings home. Cheryl gets her hooks into the third family member by vamping her way into Will's hotel room in Biloxi, where Will receives a phone call and ransom demand from Joe, who stipulates delivery in 24 hours. It's a long, horrific night for all as Iles pits each of the captives against their captors in riveting battles of will. The well-rounded characters are trademark Iles, the plot runs speed-skating smooth and occasional near-gooey bits of dialogue are offset by nasty surprises and perfectly timed terror. The one-on-one conflicts punch up the pace, and a perfect Mississippi setting, a spot-on sendup of FBI assistance and a hair-raising finale complete the package.

FORGET WILLPOWER.

Lover Awakened (Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 3)
J.R. Ward 5 Stars - the best so far of the series

Editorial Reviews
From Booklist
Deeply scarred without and within, vampire warrior Zsadist believes that he is unworthy of either compassion or true love. One night a glimmer of hope crosses his path, embodied in the young civilian Bella; yet, true to form, he pushes her away. But when the enemy of their race kidnaps Bella, Zsadist can't rest until he finds her, and once he does, he faces his biggest threat to date as fate grants him one last chance at peace. Ward spins her take on Beauty and the Beast into a raw, gritty tour de force, creating an array of ugliness and beauty, pain and pleasure in a tale that sparks enough plot stunners to keep readers fascinated for years to come. Not for the faint of heart--strong sexuality and stronger language rule here--this genre-bending third novel in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, following Lover Eternal (2006), is a perfect fit for those who like fast-paced urban fantasy rich in both fury and poignancy. Nina Davis

Review
Lover Awakened is utterly absorbing and deliciously erotic. The Brotherhood is the hottest collection of studs in romance, and I can't wait for the next one! -- USA Today bestseller Angela Knight

Best new series I've read in years! Tautly written, wickedly sexy and just plain fun. Now here's a band of brothers who knows how to show a girl a good time. -- New York Times bestseller Lisa Gardner

J.R. Ward's unique band of brothers is to die for. I love this series! -- New York Times bestseller Suzanne Brockmann

When it comes to tormented heroes, few can top the dangerous and tortured Zsadist. In a change of pace, it's the hero who has sexual issues resulting from his violently abusive past as a blood slave. Both the hero and heroine have suffered greatly, but it's Zsadist's journey to self-acceptance that makes this book so compelling. Ward pulls no punches in this dark, dangerous and at times tragic series. Waiting for successive installments is getting harder and harder. -- Romantic Times, Top Pick

Two hundred years: that's how long Rhage must bear the curse born of his reckless inconsideration. Sex and violence are all he once pursued; now they are the only things that keep the beast within at bay. He has little hope for finding peace during this existence, until Mary Luce enters his life. Irresistibly drawn to her light, he's pulled into a struggle with his own demons as well as the real enemies who threaten the vampire world and Mary. Ward wields a commanding voice perfect for the genre, and readers new to the world of the Black Dagger Brotherhood should hold on tight for an intriguing, adrenaline-pumping ride featuring a race of warrior vampires who fill enemies with terror and women with desire. Like any good thrill ride, the pace changes with a tender story of survival and hope and leaves readers begging for more. Fans of L. A. Banks, Laurell K. Hamilton, and Sherrilyn Kenyon will add Ward to their must-read list. Nina Davis
Product Description

Just read "The Condition" by Jennifer Haigh. Has anyone else read it? EXCELLENT book, very hard to put down! I was disappointed when I read the last page, as I wanted to spend more time with the characters! emoticon Seamless movement between learning more about each of the characters, similar to Maeve Binchy's writing in that way, I thought.

Even though one focus is about a medical condition, I did not find it a depressing book. It's about a family in which the daughter has Turner's Syndrome --- but it expands well beyond that to, as the author says in the interview recorded at the end of the book,

"...the story of a family torn apart not just by a daughter's medical condition, but by the decades' worth of mistakes and disappointments and regrets that followed. It's a story about five adults trying to function as a family --- five people who didn't choose each other and probably wouldn't have, but are tied to each other in ways they didn't welcome and don't completely understand." (Jennifer Haigh, interview).

This is a story about a boy with Asperger's who is arrested for murder, told from his and his family's different viewpoints. I work at a college where I have a student who has Asperger's and it was truly eye opening to read about a fictious character acting precisely like the student does. The book made it much easier for me to deal with this student.

Tutankhamun: the book of shadows by Kick Drake 5 stars

Book cover: In this compelling second novel, set against the dazzling splendor of the golden age of the Pharaohs, Nick Drake takes an imaginative and historically accurate look at one of the most fascinating reigns in ancient history. Drawing on the latest archaeological evidence, he crafts a sophisticated and griping thriller that explores one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of ancient Egypt--the untimely death of the young Tutankhamun.

Long Time Gone - Meg Benjamin - 4*

Forth in a series about Koinsberg TX and a family that moved there.

A future with the woman of his dreams is within his grasp…if the past will stay that way.

Konigsburg, Book 4

Erik Toleffson wasn’t looking to become Chief of Police. He’s got enough trouble trying to rebuild his relationship with his three brothers who, until just recently, ran the other way when he approached. He’s not the bully they grew up with, but bad memories are tough to overcome.

Morgan Barrett is as worn out as a vat full of crushed grape skins. She never planned to run Cedar Creek Winery, but there’s no one else to shoulder the load as her father recovers from an injury. All she needs is a little sleep. Just a five-minute nap in the booth at the Dew Drop Inn…if that guy across the bar would stop staring at her as if putting her head down on the table is a crime.

After Morgan yawns in Erik’s face, there’s nowhere to go but up. With time, though, their relationship warms like a perfectly blended Bordeaux. Until the shady mayor digs into Erik’s past and dredges up information that could drive a permanent wedge between him and his brothers—and sour any chance of a future with Morgan.

Warning: Contains hot sex with mango sherbet, crooked politicians, yuppy bikers, Bored Ducks, and a Maine Coon Cat with attitude.

"Requiem by Fire" by Wayne Caldwell ****

In the late 1920's, Cataloochee, NC was a settlement in the Great Smoky Mountains, home to over 1100 residents whose ancestors evicted prosperous Cherokee farmers over a century ago. Now the US Government has decided to incorporate their land as part of a new national park and inhabitants have been given the option of selling their land immedeiately, or continuing to farm (with numerous restrictions)for the remainder of their lifetimes with sharply reduced benefits for their heirs. Caldwell tells the story through the eyes of several families and examines the dichotomy between the greater good and what is good for an individual. America is a land of continual changes and it explores the dangers of getting caught up in another time and trying to set those patterns in stone.

8) Reunion - Lyndsay McKenna 5 stars

This is a Silhouette Nocturne story and part of an ongoing series "Warriors of the Light". The series is about the ongoing battle between good and evil and how precarious that balance is from day to day. The protaganists,Aella and Robert, are a pyschic and archaeologist/shape shifter. Their mission is to find the next emerald sphere before Victor Guerra finds it. Aella has lived in a past life and her husband is the spirit of the sacred spot they are investigating. Unfortunately Robert's body is taken over by Victor Guerra which also allows him access to the emerald sphere. This book shows every day is a battle for good to win and unfortunately not every day is a mark in the win column. Ms. McKenna is a very talented author and I recommend this series if you enjoy this type of reading.

naked prey by john sandford- audio- 4 stars

Amazon.com Review
When twelve-year-old muskrat trapper Letty West stumbles on the naked bodies of Jane Warr and Deon Cash, deep in the snowy woods of northern Minnesota, it's more than another bizarre episode in her already unusual life, as Lucas Davenport discovers in this new outing in Sandford's popular series featuring the midwestern lawman who moonlights as a computer game designer. Lucas has a new wife, a new baby, and a new job as a political troubleshooter for his old boss Rose Marie Roux, but the blunt-spoken Davenport's instructions to hush the racially charged implications of what looks suspiciously like a lynching won't deter him from whomever left Warr and Cash twisting in the wind. The well-peopled plot, involving a hot car ring, an ex-nun who smuggles cancer drugs over the Canadian border, and the usual internecine wranglings between the FBI, the local cops, and Davenport, races to a satisfying denouement, but this time it's a little girl with a difficult past and an uncertain future who lingers in the reader's mind. Fortunately, Sandford comes up with an ending that makes it all but certain that his fans will meet her again. Meanwhile, all the author's usual trademarks are on display--excellent writing, an interesting scenario, and terrific pacing. --

Be My Baby - Meg Benjamin - 4*

Another in the series about Konigsburg Texas.

There’s no room in her life for love. Love has other ideas…

Konigsburg, Texas, Book 3

If Jessamyn Carroll had only herself to consider, staying in Pennsylvania after her husband’s death would have been a no-brainer. Her vindictive in-laws’ efforts to get their hooks into her infant son, however, force her to flee to a new home. Konigsburg, Texas.

Peace…at least for now. She’s even found a way to make some extra money, looking after sexy accountant Lars Toleffson’s precocious two-year-old daughter. She finds it easy—too easy—to let his protective presence lull her into thinking she and her son are safe at last.

Lars, still wounded from enduring a nasty divorce from his cheating ex-wife, tries to fight his attraction to the mysterious, beautiful widow. But when an intruder breaks into her place, and Jess comes clean about her past, all bets are off. Someone wants her baby—and wants Jess out of the picture. Permanently.

Now Jess has a live-in bodyguard, whether she wants him or not. Except she does want him—and he wants her. Yet negotiating a future together will have to overcome a lot of roadblocks: babies, puppies, the entire, meddling Toleffson family—and a kidnapper.

Warning: Contains Konigsburg craziness, creepy in-laws, a conniving two-year-old, a lovelorn accountant, a sleep-deprived Web developer, and lots of hot holiday sex.

A Dog's Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron
4 stars

A tail-wagging three hanky boo-hooer, this delightful fiction debut by newspaper columnist Cameron (8 Simple Rules for Marrying My Daughter) proposes that a dog's purpose might entail being reborn several times. Told in a touching, doggy first-person, this unabashedly sentimental tale introduces Toby, who's rescued by a woman without a license for her rescue operation, so, sadly, Toby ends up euthanized. He's reborn in a puppy mill and after almost dying while left in a hot car, he's saved again by a woman, and he becomes Bailey, a beloved golden retriever, who finds happiness and many adventures. His next intense incarnation is as Ellie, a female German shepherd, a heroic search and rescue dog. But the true purpose of this dog's life doesn't become totally clear until his reincarnation as Buddy, a black Lab. A book for all age groups who admire canine courage, Cameron also successfully captures the essence of a dog's amazing capacity to love and protect. And happily, unlike Marley, this dog stays around for the long haul.

false accusations by alan jacobson- 2 stars

the ending gave this 2 stars, otherwise, it was a 1

From Publishers Weekly
An apparent hit-and-run accident involving a car he owns results in a charge of vehicular manslaughter against an orthopedic surgeon in this laborious debut by California medical evaluator Jacobson. Two people die in what turns out to be a deliberate killing in a minority neighborhood in Sacramento, and Philip Madison's Mercedes is sighted as the vehicle, although he claims he was home in bed asleep, an alibi he can't prove. After he is arrested, Madison's attorney hires PI Ryan Chandler, an ace forensic investigator who will turn out to be the white knight of this narrative. Madison is already in trouble up to his neck: a beautiful but unstable volunteer worker for a mental health organization that Madison serves as president has suddenly and illogically accused him of rape. In the fallout from Brittany Harding's accusation, Madison's wife leaves him, taking the kids. It becomes clear quickly, as Brittany's emotional problems are drawn in large and stereotypically shrill outline, that she is the real killer. With all tension thus removed from the story, the author trots out some recent technological gains in forensics?saliva from the rim of a beer can for DNA sampling, retrieving and comparing Brittany's lip prints from a cigarette. There is far too much information about the novel's myriad cast of minor characters; numerous subplots add little to the main story; and a smattering of pharmaceutical and medical jargon essentially extends the slim material but does not enliven it. Moreover, Brittany's vindictive behavior is never explained; she merely acts out of female delusional fantasies. The trial is flat and predictably melodramatic. Jacobson's prose can best be described as wooden and graceless. This clunky attempt proves that forensic knowledge does not a writer make.

FORGET WILLPOWER.

The Cat's Eye by Margaret Atwood 4 *

One of Ms Atwood's earlier works, "The Cat's Eye" is about an artist's loneliness.

Her supposed best friend bullied her in school, turned her other friends against her, and was very mean to her.

She still looks for her wherever she is, and considers her her "best friend".

Unfortunately, she doesn't have good relationships with her family or friends.

night and day by robert b parker- audio- 4 stars

From Publishers Weekly
In bestseller Parker's fluffy eighth Jesse Stone novel (after Stranger in Paradise), the Paradise, Mass., police chief almost effortlessly performs his laconic magic to restore order and right wrongs. When Betsy Ingersoll, the junior high school principal, decides to conduct a check of girls' undies before an eighth-grade dance, it may or may not have been a crime, but it certainly provokes a firestorm of protests. Then there's a Peeping Tom calling himself the Night Hawk, whose activities escalate from watching to home invasions. In addition, the legal activities of a group of adults calling themselves the Paradise Free Swingers are badly affecting two children. Jesse's ex-wife, Jenn, and his deputies, Molly Crane and Suit Simpson, lend support. With a few bold strokes, Parker sketches characters and plot, then uses long stretches of his trademark pithy dialogue to carry the story briskly forward. The result may not provide much of a meal, but it's certainly an enjoyable snack.

Wedding Bell Blues - Meg Benjamin - 4*

the second about a town in the Hill country of Texas.

Who knew you could find the love of your life at the wedding from hell…

Konigsburg, Book 2

Janie Dupree will do anything to make sure her best friend has the wedding of her dreams, even if it means relinquishing what every bridesmaid covets and never gets—the perfect maid-of-honor dress. Problem is, family drama as tangled as a clump of Texas prickly pear cactus threatens to send the skittish bride hopping aboard the elopement express.

Janie could use a hand, but the best man’s “help” is only making things worse.

Pete Toleffson just wants to get through his brother’s wedding and get back to his county attorney job in Des Moines. He never expected to be the engineer on a wedding train that’s derailing straight toward hell. Janie’s the kind of girl he’d like to get close to—but her self-induced role as “Miss Fix-It” is as infuriating as it is adorable.

If they can just fend off meddling parents, vindictive in-laws, spiteful ex-boyfriends, and a greyhound named Olive long enough to achieve matrimonial lift-off, maybe they can admit they’re head-over-heels in love.

Warning: Contains hot steamy sex, wedding-based cussing, drunken revelry, dart assaults, Momzillas, and the most beautiful bridesmaid dress ever.

the big blowdown by george pelecanos- 4 stars

first in a series of his-- really like his books!

From Library Journal
Set in Washington, D.C., from the 1930s to the 1950s, Pelecanos's (Shoedog, St. Martin's, 1994) latest novel traces a group of boyhood friends as they make their way in the richly detailed Greek and Italian neighborhoods of the city. Peter Karras, a Greek, and his friend Joe Recevo, an Italian, grow up together, serve separately in World War II, and reunite for a time after the war as Joe becomes involved in organized crime in the city. Peter cannot stomach the practice of shaking down immigrants for loan vigorish and is brutally cast out by the gangsters, as Joe stands by. The two friends will inevitably cross paths again. Pelecanos's plotting is superb, as is his use of dialog and sense of place. Innumerable details that are brought in to the story turn out to be essential plot elements further down the line, so that the entire book seems to have been conceived as a unified thought.

FORGET WILLPOWER.

A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson 5 stars (6 if science facts fascinate you)

If you are a generalist like me you will find this history of the world of science absolutely riveting. I am going to get my own copy. Although it was written in 2002 it is still very helpful. It explains all the obscure facts and discoveries, wrong turns, and breath taking changes that have happened in the world of many different sciences both macro and micro with his tongue firmly planted in his cheek. Many time I laughed out loud at the truth and how he stated it. If you love obscure facts run to grab this book.

Spy Glass by Maria V. Synder- 4 Stars

The final book in the Glass series- it's a great trilogy to read. It's found in the romance section which I completely don't understand since to me it's more fantasy than anything- all about magic. Storm Glass, Sea Glass and Spy Glass- they stem from her first trilogy Poison Study, Magic Study and Fire Study.

Royal Holiday Baby - Leanne Banks - 3.5*

A real quick read.

The princess is pregnant! Is the daddy a Texas tycoon?

Valentina Deveraux was still in shock. She had always been the good girl, the model princess--not the one getting mixed up in tabloid scandals. But one carefree night burning the bedsheets with charming Texan Zachary Logan had changed everything. Now her main responsibility was not to the throne, but to her unborn child...and getting to know his or her father.

With Zach, Valentina felt she could put down her tiara and just be herself. But the rancher had a dark secret--one that threatened any chance of happily ever after. Could the American cowboy be her true Prince Charming? Or was she risking it all for a royal heartbreak?

6* The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton

This novel is about 3 generations of women, and a family secret that takes about a hundred years to uncover.
A little girl is abandoned on an English ship headed to Australia. She is adopted by the dockmaster and his wife, and they name her "Nell"; Nell does not discover until her 21st birthday that she is not who she thought she was, and has no idea who her birth parents are, or why she was sent to Australia all by herself.

Nell sets out to find her real identity, which leads her to a small cottage on the Cornish coast of England. She buys the cottage, and intends to move there, to keep working on solving the mystery of her identity, but she ends up staying in Australia when her granddaughter Cassandra comes to live with her after Cassandra's mother, (Nell's daughter) dies. So her quest is put it on hold, until Nell passes away, and leaves the cottage to Cassandra, who picks up where Nell left off to discover to truth of what happened, and it turns into a spell binding mystery of family secrets.

I really enjoyed this book, and parts of it reminded me of Frances Hodgson Burnett's book "The Secret Garden". In fact, Ms. Burnett even makes a "guest appearance" in the story as a guest at a garden party. I liked the Gothic feel of the story that took part in the early 1900's, and how actions the characters took affected the lives of the future generations of women in the family, and I liked getting to know Nell both as a child with a vivid imagination, and as a adult trying to find her sense of self.

The story alternates mainly in the years of 1913, 1975, and 2005; some may not stories that jump around like that, I felt it worked for this book, and I did not find it confusing at all. I think it helped to enhance the mystery of the story and the pace at which it unfolded. This was a very good read with a satisfying ending.

The Lost Hero - Rick Riordan - 4.5*

After saving Olympus from the evil Titan lord, Kronos, Percy and friends have rebuilt their beloved Camp Half-Blood, where the next generation of demigods must now prepare for a chilling prophecy of their own:

Seven half-bloods shall answer the call,
To storm or fire the world must fall.
An oath to keep with a final breath,
And foes bear arms to the Doors of Death.

Now, in a brand-new series from blockbuster best-selling author Rick Riordan, fans return to the world of Camp Half-Blood. Here, a new group of heroes will inherit a quest. But to survive the journey, they’ll need the help of some familiar demigods.

"Wind Water" by Jeanne Williams ****

Shortly after close of the Civil War, an infant girl was discovered crying in a covered wagon containing the bodies of her cholera infected family. Taken by a pair of windmillers, she grew up cris-crossing the plains learning to erect windmills and provide water to settlers in the dry land wrested from the Indians. Twenty years later, the trio arrives in No Man's Land and one man is killed by ranchers opposed to any settlers other than themselves. Fighting back, Julie and Shan dedicate themselves to helping farmers dig wells, erect windmills and provide the life giving water necessary to survive in this harsh environment. Nicely written historical account of a little known chapter in western settlement. My only objections were the nicely wrapped and beribboned ending and the author's assumption that the germ theory of infection was accepted and practiced at that time on the frontier.

The Contestant by Stephanie Doyle - 5 stars

‘The Contestant’ was such a great read; I had trouble putting it down. Talia is a former Olympic silver medal winner for the dive. After her father runs into trouble with loan sharks, she agrees to become a contestant on a reality show, similar to ‘Survivor’.

Within the first few days Talia falls for another player on the show, Ruben. But before the sparks can really fly, someone is murdered and it looks like the killer is on the island.

The book was fast-paced, and very well told. The characters were real and you could both hate and love them. The climax of the book had me on the edge of the seat. What I also enjoyed was that even though there was a romantic type relationship between Talia and Ruben, was almost put to the back burner, which I think was a good way to work it. I mean, the most action was hiding from a killer, not having romantic encounters.

12) Guns Will Keep Us Together by Leslie Langtry 3 stars

A rather light-hearted romance, considering the main character comes from the Bombay family - specializing in assassinations since 2000 BC. It's the family business, but now Dakota Bombay and his cousin Paris have been asked by grandma to develop pie charts and a profit plan for the business. Oh, and he's also got a precocious 6 year old son he didn't know he had, and is romancing a hot red-head. Now, if they can just wipe out the rival assassins ...
