21) Stolen Heat by Elizabeth Naughton 4 stars

Part of a trio of "Stolen" books - some of the characters continue. Pete Kauffman lost the love of his life 6 years ago - the woman that made him turn his life around died in a car crash in Cairo - or did she? Kat Meyer reappears and steals an artifact from the Egyptian auction ... and saves Pete's life. Romantic suspense ... quick good read.

22) Second Sight (Arcane Society Book 1) by Amanda Quick 4 atars

Jayne Ann Krentz write under 3 names - Amanda Quick, Jayne Castle, and Krentz. Oddly enough, this Arcane series is written under different names. OK - Victorian era photographer Venetia Milton supports her family, and keeps many secrets - her father's bigamy, her affair with Gabriel Jones, and her ability to use her second sight to read auras. Gabriel is heir to the Arcane Society, and is reported as dead. Venetia takes his name and poses as his grieving widow. To protect her, her "husband" returns from the dead, claiming amnesia.

"Gap Creek" by Robert Morgan ****

Seventeen year old Julie Harmon lives and works, really works, in the mountains of North Carolina at the turn of the last century. She saws trees, cuts wood, butchers hogs, digs ditches and plants taters in addition to every woman's 'normal' work of cooking on the woodstove, spinning, making clothes, scrubbing the floors on her knees and boiling the family laundry. Her younger brother dies in her arms as she and her consumptive father carry him miles at night desperately trying to get to a doctor. Less than a year later her father dies as well and Julie marries Hank after knowing him only a few weeks. They move to a house over the line in Gap Creek, South Carolina where they live rent-free in exchange for Julie keeping house and tending to old Mr. Pendergast. In clear, matter-of-fact language, Morgan relates the story of Julie and Hank's first year of marriage in a hamlet untouched by the modern inventions rapidly finding their way into American life at that time. A stark portrayal of love, loss and endurance.

The Dead Detective - Lorene Robbins

4 stars

C.J. Thomas wishes she had never heard of Budge Dirkwood. It's not the fact that she stumbled over his dead body when she went to meet him for the first time, and it's not the fact that the victim's obnoxious rich cousin seems intent on having her arrested for the murder. It's not even the fact that the victim was a somewhat flaky pawnbroker who dabbled in the I Ching and believed in all the paranormal phenomena that C.J.'s rational mind automatically rejects. No, the problem is that the ghost of the victim won't leave her alone.

C.J. can't explain it, and isn't quite sure she believes it, but the ghost of Budge Dirkwood has popped into her life, and it seems the only way she can get rid of him is to help him solve his murder. With his help, she investigates all the possible suspects ranging from teen-aged gang members to the rich and powerful members of Highland Park society, checking out some wife beaters and Elvis impersonators in between. Will she find the killer and succeed in getting this ghost out of her life? Or will she be stuck with the ghost of a pawnbroker for the rest of her life?

13) Lone Star Seduction - Day LeClaire 2 Stars

The last in Silhouette Desire's "Texas Cattleman's Club" series has Alex Montoya saving a Rebecca's father even though he blamed the man for his mother working herself to death years ago. Throw in a long ago friend who has turned out to be a thug and some mysterious fires and you have a fairly fast paced quickly read book. I've read the series from the very beginning many years ago and every now and again they print some new ones. So I keep reading them for a break from other stuff.

12) Indulgence in Death - J.D. Robb 6 stars

This is the latest in this ongoing futuristic mystery series about a NY police detective Lt. Eve Dallas, her very wealthy husband Rourke, and a supporting cast of cops and other friends who support Eve as she solves cases. The latest involves people who are born to money and therefore feel entitled and their reactions to people who have to work for it. These books are engaging, fast paced (the bodies pile up), and yet include romance and continued interaction from book to book with characters from previous books. I absolutely love these books and highly recommend them to anyone who has enjoyed the author (Nora Roberts) in her other line.

"Dark Lover" by JR Ward 6*.

The first book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood Series"

Wrath is a loner vampire, but is the leader of a group of Vampires whose job it is to try and keep their race alive by killing Lessors (vampire hunters). One of his team, Darias, asks Wrath to look after his daughter who is half human as she goes through the Transition, Wrath turns Darias down but when Darias is killed later that night he knows he must go to his daughter. It moves on from there, I thought it was a great story.

I love books on vampires and I am intrigued by some of the ideas that different authors have for their vampires. In this novel, vampires are born and they must feed from each other for survival - men to women and visa versa, human blood does not sustain them for long. They also are not necessarily beautiful and seem to be able to be injured more easily than the usual vampire.

The same kind of different as me by Ron Hall and Denver Moore. 6 stars

It is the true story of two very different men who are brought together and to Christ by the most magnificent woman. Denver began as a poor black man who was homeless, on the street, with a violent temper. The other is a rich man, her husband who has strayed, but decided he wants to follow whatever his wife tells him to do to keep her. She is a Christian woman who has decided to dedicate herself to improving the life of the poor, homeless in her city. I will not tell you all the developments because you wouldn't believe it could happen. But her life and death is proof that one person can change the world where you live.

edge by jeffery deaver- 3 stars

From Publishers Weekly
Thriller Award–winner Deaver (The Bodies Left Behind) unveils some nifty new tricks in this edge-of-your-seat thriller that pits two worthy antagonists against each other. Henry Loving, "a lifter," specializes in extracting information from human targets by any means necessary (i.e., torture). Corte, "a shepherd," is an agent in the Strategic Protection Department of a secret government agency normally assigned to protect high-profile targets. An intercepted communication identifies Loving as the lifter ordered to target Ryan Kessler, a Washington, D.C., metro detective. While Corte attempts to protect Kessler's family and identify the "primary," Loving's employer, Loving seeks the edge to get the information he needs to extract. Corte, a board game aficionado and game theory student, and Loving are well matched, sharing a history that ups the stakes and makes the contest personal. Deaver's first first-person narrator, Corte, is an exciting new weapon in the author's arsenal of memorable characters. (Nov.) (c)

4* One Simple Act by Debbie Macomber

This non fiction book is about the power of generosity, and how the gift of being generous makes the giver feel good, and how it comes back to them. And giving isn't just monetary either; for example, you can give the gift of time, or the gift of listening. The author also talks about the gifts of forgiveness, hospitality, and encouragement.

I really enjoyed this book. While it's not a book that I feel is "life transforming", it did give me a lot to think about, and made me appreciate all the more the kind things that others have done for me throughout my life. The main lesson is we do not have to be monetarily wealthy to give; there are many different ways to give, and even small acts can have a big ripple effect.

The way I discovered this book was itself an act of kindness; it was left in the mail room where I live, where my neighbors and I often leave books and magazines that we are finished with for others to enjoy. So I will "pay it forward" now that I am finished with the book and leave it in the mail room for someone else to enjoy.

My name is Shari; I have been a Sparker since July 2006, I am now in hospice care for metastatic breast cancer, but I'm not letting cancer stop me from Sparking!

Promise me you'll always remember: You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.

Life coach March Monroe decides to finish college when her daughter goes to Boston University. She chooses a different college; but much to her daughter's chagrin. Funny parts, quick read; just not enough substance.
