If you havent yet read it, you all must read, "The Innocent Man", by John Grisham....the true story of two men wrongfully convicted of murder and sent to death row in Ada, Oklahoma.....the Innocence Project later cleared the two men of the charges.

But dont stop there, the books related to this story, a must read, include, "The Dreams of Ada" by Robert Mayer and "Journey Toward Justice" by Dennis Fritz....who was one of the innocent men, wrongfully convicted and sent to death row as told in The Innocent Man.....

I am new to the team so am going to make an assumption that this is a listing of books I have read in April; please forgive me if I am incorrect:

The Girl Who Played With Fire

Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay 5*s

Starting this journey over again. Lost quite a bit during divorce almost 5 years ago and have allowed myself to gain it all back by not weighing myself daily and recording what I eat.
God gives me the strength every day to face all obstacles.

Hi - just to let you know -- the books listed here on 5-01-after the April list was made will be on May's list. So, you'll still get them listed, don't worry. Though go ahead and add to May's list as GERRYD8784 has suggested. I should be able to pick them all up then. Echo

Since you finished it in April, JerseyGirl, you've got it in the right place! You can add your next book to the May list.

Should I leave this entry here or put it on May's list?

3 by Nora Roberts about the Stanislaski siblings; all romance stories emoticon

26) Luring a Lady (Mikhail) 4 stars Artist and wood worker Mikhail meets icey business woman Sydney

27) Convincing Alex (Alex) 4 stars Alex arrests Bess as she's investigating prostitutes for her job as a soap opera writer.

28) Taming Natasha (Natasha) 4 stars Single father Spence falls for fiery beauty Natasha

Meet the large, boisterous Stanislaski family - Mom & Dad (Nadia & Yuri), oldest daughter Natasha, oldest brother Mikhail, youngest brother Alex, and little sister Rachel (the next one in the series). The series ends with Waiting for Nick (who realizes Frederica, Spence's daughter, who he has been treating as a kid sister, is all grown up) and finally Considering Kate (Spence and Natasha's daughter - who meets building contractor Brady).

I got all of the books (which are doubles ) to read from a Bookmooch request - and I was only able to read the first 3 stories - I'll have the next 3 for May!

The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan
Just to warn you, as an elementary/ middle school substitute teacher, I read a lot of young adult fiction! I highly recommend this author's Percy Jackson & the Olympians series (The Lightning Thief, etc.) This book is a related story, focusing on Jason, a lost demi-god hero of Olympus. It was excellent and I cannot wait for the next in the series, The Son of Neptune (Percy Jackson should be making a return!)

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card 2*

This is as sci fi book about a young 6 year old tactical genius who is to save humanity from the evil hordes (the Buggers).
It is hard to believe that young Ender has 2 genius siblings like himself, although their parents aren't all that smart.
If all the kids were ten years older it might be more believable.
As it is, the book is like a cheap B movie, where the young child is taken from his parents at an early age by Government Agents to become a super hero!

Currently read Twenties Girl by Sophie Kinsella, just finished chapter 10. I like her non-shopaholic books better, I alwasy get so frustrated reading about Becky from Shopaholic series, haha. Anyhow, so far what I've read from Twenties Girl, a great-aunt appeared as ghost and asked her great-niece to find her necklace - well, more to bug her, not politely request. And mayhems happened, what with a ghost keep screaming to stil-alive people, pushing them to do what she wanted but those are so fun to read, make me laugh! Ok, going to continue reading :D

Ghost Light" by Joseph O'Connor ****

Alternating between 1907 Dublin and 1952 London, O'Connor relates the star-crossed love between playwright John Synge and actress Molly Allgood. Synge is educated, part of the Protestant aristocracy of Ireland - a founder of the Abbey Theater and ruled by his austere and jealous mother. Molly is a child of the tenements, dreaming of success on the stage and even stardom in America, but Synge becomes her passion and she is his muse. Moving between the lovers as young and idealistic and Molly as an old has-been - an alcoholic who lives partly in a drunken fog and the rest of the time with her memories as a witty, sought-after performer. O'Connor has written of joy and sadness, passion and denial and crafted a touching tribute to two very strong but very weak souls.

Breaking Daylight. This is the fourth of the Twilight series. Very good but a little slower than I had expected. I really don't know how they will make a movie out of this one.

The Lincoln Lawyer by Michael Connelly - 5 starts so far, I haven't finished it but it is very interesting so far. Sort of reads like a John Grisham, probably because it is about a lawyer, but one who works out of his Lincoln. This is a movie now also.

Thanks for the thumbs up on "The Help", I have been looking at down loadinig it on my Kindle but wasn't sure about it, now I will definately get it.

I've read it and it is an excellent book about race relations in the South in the 1960's. I read it in one sitting, it's that good, so I highly recommend it. I'm curious to see how the movie version will turn out. I hope it will do the book justice.

"Lyrics Alley" by Leila Aboula ****

Compelling story of an affluent Muslim Sudanese family in the 1950's engulfed by the social and political turmoil of a country breaking free of colonial bonds and seeking its place in the increasing global community. British rule is ending, long-standing ties with neighboring Egypt may become a permanent merger, religious groups are jockeying for power, and the old ways are rapidly falling by the wayside. The Abyuzeid family has amassed a fortune through their trading company. Mahmoud Bey has two wives, one African Sudanese who is illiterate and strongly traditional, and the other an educated Egyptian beguiled by Western ways. When Nur, the brilliant, handsome son who is slated as heir apparent, suffers a life-threatening accident, the family becomes divided in the face of an uncertain future.

Aboulela gives the reader historical background into one of the world's troubled regions, putting contemporary headlines into a social, political, and religious perspective.

Red Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson 4.5*

This is a well written epic of humans reaching Mars.
Robinson goes into great detail depicting how the original 100
live on a space craft, land and begin settling on Mars after a 9 month voyage.

Some want to terraform Mars ( turn it into Earth) , while there is another faction that wants Mars to stay as it is( extremely cold with unbreathable atmosphere).

Robinson follows the original settlers through the years through different adventures.
This is a tale that Jules Verne could have written.
My main fault with this book is that the characters are flat.
Robinson ( a man) has everyone sounding alike. There are a lot of characters,
but, although they have different ideas, their speech is interchangeable.

The book is worth reading because of the beautiful descriptions of our neighboring planet.

I have two books I've read these past couple of weeks.
1. The Haunted Mesa - Louis L'Amour 4 *
I know what you're thinking. Louis L'Amour another mass produced western blah. Well first off I do like Louis so I'm a little biased, but this book is outstanding. I keep rereading it. The binding is worn on my copy. This book has everything. It's like a mystery/supernatural/western/kinda romance. It is a little difficult to follow thus the 4 * instead of 5, but other than that it's awesome. If you read one Louis book and think this one is going to be the same you are wrong.

2. The Search - Nora Roberts 3 *
Is this going to be one of my favorites? No. Is it a good something to relax to book? Absolutely. I read it in two days. It could have been one, but I had a busy weekend. If you know Nora then this book is more like her J.D. Robb stuff I guess. Anyway good book.

Beyond the Bouganvillea by Delores Durando

This story takes place in North Dakota and California in the 20's and 30's. Marge lost her mother when she was 11 years old, then at 16, her father marries her off to a drunken and abusive man. But with the help of the town doctor and a kindly neighbor, Marge is able to escape to California, and she is determined to put the past behind her and make something of her life.

When tragedy strikes the family she is living with there, Marge is on her own. She befriends a Native American woman, something that was frowned upon by society at that time, and later, they both travel to the northern part of the state, where a new town is growing where the Ruck-a-Chucky Dam is being built. Marge builds a life for herself there, and has a chance of love and happiness with an Army Corp engineer of Cherokee descent.

I liked this story, but found some flaws in it. Marge seemed to be a little too well adjusted and "perfect" considering her abuse in her childhood and teens, and parts of the story just didn't seem to "flow". One example is when Marge asks for help buying a new pair of shoes for her job which starts the next day at 6:30am, but then the story goes on about a long shopping trip, and she doesn't actually start the job til a few days later.

The woman who wrote the story was 90 years old at the time, and this is her first book. I have to give her credit for going for it at an age where many others would have decided they were "too old" to try something like that. I think if she would have had a better editor, it would have made all the difference, because the basic storyline was a good one, just not executed that well.

She did do a great job with the historical details, and describing what it was like to live in those times in those places.

This was a Kindle freebie, and while I did like most of the book, I would have been very disappointed if it had been a book I actually had to pay for.

I am *finally* finished the latest Jean Auel book, Land Of The Painted Caves

emoticon emoticon emoticon

the Land of Painted Caves continues the story of Ayla, her mate Jondalar, and their little daughter, Jonayla, taking readers on a journey of discovery and adventure as Ayla struggles to find a balance between her duties as a new mother and her training to become a Zelandoni—one of the Ninth Cave community’s spiritual leaders and healers. Once again, Jean Auel combines her brilliant narrative skills and appealing characters with a remarkable re-creation of the way life was lived thousands of years ago, rendering the terrain, dwelling places, longings, beliefs, creativity, and daily lives of Ice Age Europeans as real to the reader as today’s news

Latest book: The Winter of Our Discontent by John Steinbeck, which is about a man struggling to balance his morals and the growing corruption of corporate America. I normally really love Steinbeck but the tone of this book was very off for me and I didn't like it at all. 2 stars.

25) Wicked Widow by Amanda Quick 3 stars

Regency romance, fell a little short of Quick's usual, but still OK.

23) The Dangerous Book for Demonslayers by Angie Fox 3.5 stars

Slam-bang action and quirky characters as Lizzie tries to learn on the fly how to be a demon slayer. She finds out she needs a license (!) - newly armed with a learner's permit, she tackles succubi in Las Vegas, aided and frustrated by her grandma, the biker witch coven, and her shape-shifting griffon sweetie.

24) Kiss Me, Kill Me (A Paranormal Short Story Anthology) by H.P Mallory et al, overall 3 stars

Hmm, seemed to be more for the YA crowd. Short stories, a couple of longer ones, and a couple that seemed chopped off. All, obviously, with the paranormal twist.

Hot Six by Janet Evanovich **** (4 stars)

From Publisher's Weekly

Sexy, smart-talking New Jersey bounty hunter Stephanie Plum returns for her sixth wildly amusing mystery (after 1999's High Five). Determination and contacts (she's grown up with half the cops and crooks in Trenton) compensate for Steph's poor aim with a gun, bad luck with cars and soft-hearted approach to her job (one bail jumper evades her four times). The police are after her mentor, the mysterious Ranger, wanted for killing drug and gun dealer Homer Ramos. Claiming he's innocent, Ranger persuades Steph to help him keep an eye on the Ramos clan. Steph teams up with her lover, vice cop Joe Morelli, then strikes out on her own when she realizes neither Joe nor Ranger will share information with her. When Mafia thugs get involved, she barely avoids kidnapping and torture. Meanwhile, there's her love life to deal with. Can she be physically attracted to Ranger and be in love with Joe? Evanovich spins all these threads, plus more, into a lunatic tapestry of nonstop action peopled by wacky characters straight out of a 1930s screwball comedy: Steph's Grandma Mazur, 80 years old, with the world view of a teenage punk; Mooner and Dougie, two lovable but zonked-out stolen goods dealers who have a closeout sale before going to jail; Habib and Mitchell, mobsters who follow Steph when Mitchell's wife doesn't need the car for kids' soccer games; and Steph's co-worker and pal, Lula, a gun-toting ex-prostitute always ready for an adventure. Evanovich just keeps getting better.

The Professor's House by Willa Cather - 4 stars - this is a character study of sorts of an aging professor who falls into a depression after he moves out of his house of 20 years.

I really enjoyed this story that continues with Sylvia Compson's life and tells part of the story of her mother.

Have just finished all four of the ICE AND FIRE series by George R. Michael. An amazingly BIG read! I went from not knowing if I would make it through them, to having kind of a "hole" in my life after they were finished. And now that "Game of Thrones" is on HBO and Book 5 is coming out in July, I'm pretty happy!

Too much of chore to be an enjoyable read. The story of some heroes no doubt; but I did not care for the manner the author told the tale.

Quit stuffing your face and face your stuff.
