If I have books I read in November, but didn't post yet, should I put them here or list them in my December post?

Thanks,
Courtney

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins - 6 stars

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. Long ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. As part of the surrender terms, each district agreed to send one boy and one girl to appear in an annual televised event called, "The Hunger Games," a fight to the death on live TV. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she is forced to represent her district in the Games. The terrain, rules, and level of audience participation may change but one thing is constant: kill or be killed.

6* Dirty Little Secrets by CJ Omololu

16 year old Lucy has been hiding a big secret for years; her mother is a compulsive hoarder. Her older brother and sister have long since moved out, leaving Lucy to deal with her mother alone. Lucy struggles with the shame, and with trying to manage to keep her home life a secret from her best friend and the boy she has a crush on. When her mother dies suddenly in her home, Lucy hesitates to call 911, knowing it would reveal the way the really live. Instead, she sets a 2 day plan into motion in hopes that she can finally live a normal life.

This is a young adult novel, but it is one that will appeal to adults as well, especially if you watch those hoarding shows on TV. The author really makes you feel Lucy's fear and isolation. It's heartbreaking to me to see kids having to live in those conditions, and I really feel for Lucy. I had an aunt who was a hoarder, and while I never had to live with her, I do understand the shame it makes you feel.

I think this would be great book for a book club to read, there is so much to discuss, especially how the hoarding affected the relationships Lucy had with her mother, siblings, friends, and her peers.

My name is Shari; I have been a Sparker since July 2006, I am now in hospice care for metastatic breast cancer, but I'm not letting cancer stop me from Sparking!

Promise me you'll always remember: You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.

6. The Art of Fielding Chad Harbach 5 stars Wonderful book! I was afraid it would be too baseball intensive but it wasn't.

Amazon Book Description
Publication Date: September 7, 2011
At Westish College, a small school on the shore of Lake Michigan, baseball star Henry Skrimshander seems destined for big league stardom. But when a routine throw goes disastrously off course, the fates of five people are upended.

Henry's fight against self-doubt threatens to ruin his future. College president Guert Affenlight, a longtime bachelor, has fallen unexpectedly and helplessly in love. Owen Dunne, Henry's gay roommate and teammate, becomes caught up in a dangerous affair. Mike Schwartz, the Harpooners' team captain and Henry's best friend, realizes he has guided Henry's career at the expense of his own. And Pella Affenlight, Guert's daughter, returns to Westish after escaping an ill-fated marriage, determined to start a new life.

As the season counts down to its climactic final game, these five are forced to confront their deepest hopes, anxieties, and secrets. In the process they forge new bonds, and help one another find their true paths. Written with boundless intelligence and filled with the tenderness of youth, The Art of Fielding is an expansive, warmhearted novel about ambition and its limits, about family and friendship and love, and about commitment--to oneself and to others.

5. Once a Runner John L. Parker 4 stars Great book for runners
Amazon Book Description
Publication Date: April 6, 2010
Originally self-published in 1978, Once a Runner captures the essence of competitive running—and of athletic competition in general—and has become one of the most beloved sports novels ever published..
Inspired by the author’s experience as a collegiate champion, the story focuses on Quenton Cassidy, a competitive runner at fictional Southeastern University whose lifelong dream is to run a four-minute mile. He is less than a second away when the turmoil of the Vietnam War era intrudes into the staid recesses of his school’s athletic department. After he becomes involved in an athletes’ protest, Cassidy is suspended from his track team. Under the tutelage of his friend and mentor, Bruce Denton, a graduate student and former Olympic gold medalist, Cassidy gives up his scholarship, his girlfriend, and possibly his future to withdraw to a monastic retreat in the countryside and begin training for the race of his life against the greatest miler in history. .

A rare insider’s account of the incredibly intense lives of elite distance runners, Once a Runner is an inspiring, funny, and spot-on tale of one man’s quest to become a champion..

4* Seeing the Elephant by Leah Banicki

Corrine Temple is only 17 when she sets off on the Oregon Trail in 1848 to be reunited with her father who she has not seen in 3 years. Because it was considered unseemly for young women to travel alone at that time, a marriage is arraigned for her by her father to young man who is returning to Oregon after going to school in the East. It's a marriage in name only, as Andrew intends to get an annulment as soon as they reach their destination.

Corrine is lonely on the trail, not getting along well with Andrew. She turns to new friends in their wagon party that help her get through the tough times and give her hope for the future. She also uses her skills as a healer using herbs and oils to help others with their accidents and illnesses along the way.

Most of the book is about the long and hard journey, and the author does a great job of giving you a feeling for the terrain and environment. There are many sad events along the way, but also some happy times. It's a coming of age story that also has a light romance. The only bad thing I have to say about this book are the many grammatical errors. The author frequently mixes up past and present tense, sometimes within the same sentence, but the story was so riveting that as I got further into the book, those errors didn't bother me as much. But it's a shame that it is so full of errors, because otherwise I think this book has potential to be a best seller. I am glad that I got this one free on Kindle. If not for all the errors, this would have have been a 5* book for me.

The author lives in Michigan, which I thought was pretty cool because I am a Michigan girl myself.

On Mexican Time by Tony Cohan**** 4 stars

When Los Angeles novelist Tony Cohan and his artist wife, Masako, visited central Mexico one winter they fell under the spell of a place where the pace of life is leisurely, the cobblestone streets and sun-splashed plazas are enchanting, and the sights and sounds of daily fiestas fill the air. They returned to California, sold their house and cast off for a new life in San Miguel de Allende. Cohan's memoir of how he and his wife absorb the town's sensual ambiance, eventually find and refurbish a crumbling 250-year-old house, and become entwined in the endless drama of Mexican life is sure to please most readers.

The Deer's Cry by Patricia Kennealy-Morrison---**** (4 stars)****

Here is the description from the back of the book...In the Deer's Cry, the Eighth book fo ther Keltiad series, Patricia Kennealy-Morrison takes us back to the distant days when Keltia was not yet, and weaves the tale of how it came to be...In the EArth year 453 by the Common Reckoning, a small fleet of ships leaves Ireland, carrying emigrants seeking a new home in a far land. But the ships they sail are not the leather-hulled boats of later legend, and the seas they cross are not the wild Western Ocean. Their ships are starships; the oceans the starry gulfs of space itself. The new world they seek is a distant double-ringed palnet, and though this great voyage is indeed led by a man called Brendan, he is no Christian navigator -monk but the son of a mortal lord and a princess of the Sidhe. To escape an invader named Patraic determined to drive the magic of the Old Ways from the land, he must take the best of Celtdom, the faerie race known as the Danaans, to the stars...

I love the Keltiad series, and read it over & over again...this book takes the mythos of the "peaceful" Christian conversion of Ireland and looks at it from a different perspective and definition...These books connect with my love of Celtic, Wicca, paganism, and sci-fi/fantasy.

Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman 3*

I read the long " death -bed " version of Leaves of Grass on my Kindle.
There were some great poems, but it wasn't until over 60% was finished before
I saw " O Captain, my captain" , which I probably read in Grade School.
I would have prefered reading the shorter version.
Apparently after Whitman finished the original 12 poems, he kept adding to the collection
until it became this massive tome.
I read every word, but it was hard work.
Maybe lovers of poetry will appreciate it more.

The Fermata by Nicholson Baker**** 4 stars

Arno Strine, a 35-year-old office temp is writing his autobiography, which is harder than he thought it would be. His "Fold-powers" are easier; he can stop the world and use it as his own pleasure ground. Arno uses this gift not for evil or material gain (he would feel guilty about stealing), though he does undress a good number of women and momentarily place them in compromising positions--always, in his view, with respect and love. Not as good as it should have been.

Stan Musial by George Vecsey**** 4 stars

Although Stan Musial is universally regarded as one of baseball's greatest players, he is nevertheless underrated. He played far from the national media spotlight, in St. Louis. He had amazing consistency--he got 1,815 hits on the road and 1,815 at home—made him unspectacularly spectacular. A delightful biography of a man and a baseball era.

The Fat Man: A Tale of North Pole Noir by Kenneth Harmon**** 5 stars

Fired from his longtime job as captain of the Coal Patrol, two-foot-three inch 1,300-year-old elf Gumdrop Coal is angry. He's one of Santa's original elves, inspired by the fat man's vision to bring joy to children on that one special day each year. But somewhere along the way things went sour for Gumdrop. Maybe it was delivering one too many lumps of coal for the Naughty List. Maybe it's the conspiracy against Christmas that he's starting to sense down every chimney. Either way, North Pole disillusionment is nothing new: Some elves brood with a bottle of nog, trying to forget their own wish list. Some get better. Some get bitter. Gumdrop Coal wants revenge. Justice is the only thing he knows, and so he decides to give a serious wakeup call to parents who can't keep their vile offspring from landing on the Naughty List. But when one parent winds up dead, his eye shot out with a Red Ryder Carbine-Action Two-Hundred-Shot Range Model BB gun, Gumdrop Coal must learn who framed him and why. Along the way he'll escape the life-sucking plants of the Mistletoe Forrest, battle the infamous Tannenbomb Giant, and survive a close encounter with twelve very angry drummers and their violent friends. The horrible truth lurking behind the gingerbread doors of Kringle Town could spell the end of Christmas-and of the fat man himself. Holly Jolly!

In a hell-bent effort to prove his mettle as an American male and win back Gillian's affections, Charlie crisscrosses the nation seeking counsel, confronting creatures both mythic and real—Bigfoot on the Canadian border, space aliens in Seattle, a professional bodybuilder with Asiatic sex slaves in suburban New Jersey, the demons dancing a rumba inside his own heart—and then writing about his travails every week for a popular slick magazine.

Bright’s Passage by Josh Ritter**** 4 stars

An angel, inhabiting his horse has followed Henry Bright home from the senseless carnage of WWI. Upon returning home Henry attempts to put the shambles of wartime behind him by marrying his childhood friend Rachel and having a baby with her. Rachel dies in childbirth and Henry finds himself beset by new and present vagaries while he attempts to understand the ones he has already come through. With his so-called angel, constantly telling him what to do, Henry slowly finds his way. I felt frustrated through most of this book, but the end was quite satisfying.

The Grief of Others by Leah Hager Cohen**** 4 stars

The Ryries have suffered a loss: the death of a baby just 57 hours after his birth. Without words to express their grief, the parents, John and Ricky, try to return to their previous lives. Struggling to regain a semblance of normalcy for themselves and for their two older children, they find themselves pretending not only that little has changed, but that their marriage, their family, have always been intact. Yet in the aftermath of the baby's death,
long-suppressed uncertainties about their relationship come roiling to the surface. A dreadful secret emerges with reverberations that reach far into their past and threaten their future.

The couple's children, 10-old Biscuit and 13-year-old Paul, responding to the unnamed tensions around them, begin to act out in exquisitely- perhaps courageously-idiosyncratic ways. But as the four family members scatter into private, isolating grief, an unexpected visitor arrives, and they all find themselves growing more alert to the sadness and burdens of others-to the grief that is part of every human life but that also carries within it the power to draw us together.

The Dyslexic Advantage by Brock L. Eide and Fernette F. Eide**** 4 stars

In this paradigm-shifting book, neurolearning experts Drs. Brock and Fernette Eide describe an exciting new brain science that reveals that people with dyslexia have unique brain structure and organization. While the differences are responsible for certain challenges with literacy and reading, the dyslexic brain also gives a predisposition to important skills, and special talents.

While dyslexics typically struggle to decode the written word, they often also excel in such areas of reasoning as mechanical (required for architects and surgeons), interconnected (artists and inventors); narrative (novelists and lawyers), and dynamic (scientists and business pioneers). Good information for parents of younger diagnosed children.

Life, on the Line by Grant Achatz***** 5 stars

This was completely amazing. Chef Achatz and his business partner, Kokonas tell of their Chicago restaurant, Alinea, as well as Achatz’s cancer diagnosis and recovery. Achatz grew up in Michigan in and around restaurants, the only child of a troubled marriage who spent an otherwise contented adolescence around kitchens. He eventually attended the Culinary Institute of America and studied with Charlie Trotter and Thomas Keller with whom he began developing both his palate and culinary vision. He returned to Chicago, where he met Kokonas, who became his business partner in 2005, when they opened Alinea. As Alinea evolves from drawing board to reality, the narrative alternates between the two men's voices. They discuss finding the right team of chefs and dealing with Achatz's diagnosis with stage IV tongue cancer.

This Body of Death by Elizabeth George *****

Deft intertwining of two seemingly unrelated murder cases - one young woman stabbed in a cemetary and a toddler abducted, then tortured and murdered, by 3 10 year old boys. Inspector Lynley is back in London, but still recovering after the brutal shooting of his pregnant wife. He's called in as a consultant by the New Scotland Yard Deputy Chief - a divorced woman on the fast track who's been brought in to shake up Metro. Lynley's former partner, Barbara, is now being tutored on fashion, makeup, and personal appearance by the hew head, and she's chafing under the scrutiny - she's also upset not to be working with Lynley. A long book (875 pages). but written with George's trademark crispness and attention to plot and characters.

6* Triangle: The Fire That Changed America by David von Drehle

This is the story of the events leading up to, and including deadly Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire which happened in New York City in 1911. Within about 15 minutes 146 workers, mostly women in their teens and twenties, dies; either from being burned or jumping from the 9th floor to their deaths.

The author sets up the story by examining the sociopolitical context of the time, and gives a moving account and a human voice to those who managed to escape and those who perished, and then what was done about the owners and workplace safety afterwards. He goes into great detail about the trial too, it's unbelievable to me that the owners were found not guilty, but it is explained in the book how that happened.

This a very sad chapter in the history of workplace safety that should not be forgotten. I think it is fitting that at the end of the book, the author includes of a list of names of all the identified victims of the fire. Mr. von Drehle did an excellent job with his research for the book.

This book is a bit hard for me to rate. As a general interest reader I think I would put it at about 4 out of 5. Very interesting, but almost a bit too violent for my taste because it has so many people being burned at the stake for translating or teaching the bible in English that it almost makes the Salem Witch Hunts look like a cake walk.

The scholarship is a bit less exacting than I like in a non-fiction book. It uses lots of secondary sources, etc. So I would have to give it a 3/5 on scholarship.

I read "Fire in the Bones: William Tyndale--Martyr, Father of the English Bible" by S. Michael Wilcox. This was an amazing book. It told the price that had to be paid in order for the Bible to be available in the English language. Unfortunately this was the deaths of many good people who were burned at the stake as heretics when their only crime was preaching the word of God in English. John Wycliff's bones were even dug up after he died and were burned because they believed this damned the soul to hell. This is an inspirational story set against the backdrop of a violent time: The time when the inquisition spread throughout Europe. I had no idea how much it played a part in the history of England. Nor did I realize that Thomas More, while in many ways a brave and heroic man, was also a great persecutor of those who did not hold his religious beliefs.

A note: The King James Bible, which was able to come forth in a less violent time, but which owes much of it's translation to the work of William Tyndale, is celebrating it's four-hundredth birthday this year. This book also has an interesting perspective because Michael Wilcox is an instructor at the LDS institute at the University of Utah and it gives an LDS perspective on this amazing story.

A Great Deliverance by Elizabeth George ****

I finally got around to reading the first book in George's DI Lynley series. Patrolwoman Barbara Havers views suave, titled Thomas Lynley with both contempt and jealousy -educated, sure of himself, impecably dressed, seemingly capable of handling any social situation and attracting any member of the opposite sex fortunate enough to claim his interest. When she is informed by her superior that an upcoming partnership with Lynley will be her last shot at making Detective, Havers is convinced everyone else is laughing at the incongruous pair they make (a fairly widespread conceit that has so many of us convinced that the rest of the world has nothing more to do than be preoccupied with us and what we are doing). During the ensuing investigation into the murder and beheading of a prosporous farmer, she is forced to confront her own prejudices and insecurities as she grudgingly comes to respect and even like the handsome peer. I've read several later books in this series, and it was interesting to finally find out how it all started.

Touched By Angels (Angels Everywhere) - Debbie Macomber - 4 stars

New York City is alwaysin need of miracles . . .

And this Christmas is no exception. Thank heavens the divinely inspired, if somewhat ditsy, angelic trio—Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy—is availableto answer three heartfelt prayers this sacred holiday season . . . and to impart important lessons along the way. And Goodness knows (as do Mercy and Shirley) that the three lonely women to whom they’ve been assigned have a lot to learn:

A dedicated inner-city school teacher,Brynn needs to teach her troubled studentshow to dream . . .

Shy and dutiful Hannah must learnto follow her own heart . . .

And frustrated small-town-girl-turned-Broadway-wannabe Jenny needs to discover thathome is where love truly lies.

It’s time for the angels to shine . . . and toprove once again that when you wish upon a star, you get much more than just a pretty song!

Typical for an anthology, some of the tales rocked, some barely floated. All involve ghostiess, ghoulies, or things that go bump in the night as the householders do renovations.

Full Dark, No Stars by Stephen King 5*

Stephen King is at the top of his game with these three novellas and one short story.
The subjects of these stories are heavy: two deal with serial killers and one with the devil.
I am sure he could have developed any one of these stories into a novel, but here he keeps the writing taut with average people put into extraordinary cicumstances.

Mr. King says in the Afterword to his book: "The stories in this book are harsh. You may
have found them hard to read in places. If so, be assured that I found them equally hard to write in places."

I think Mr. King wants to show there are real monsters in the world.

*** The bake-off - Beth Kendrick

Suburban soccer mom Amy has always wanted to stand out from the crowd. Former child prodigy Linnie just wants to fit in. The two sisters have been estranged for years, but thanks to a series of personal crises and their wily grandmother, they've teamed up to enter a national bake-off in the hopes of winning some serious cash. Armed with the top-secret recipe for Grammy's apple pie, they should be unstoppable. Sure, neither one of them has ever baked anything more complicated than brownie mix, but it's just pie-how hard could it be?

Found the book to be a bit flat. Tried to put a lot in but not a lot of development of the story and you know how it is going to turn out.

The Passage by Justin Cronin ****

Long and convoluted account of an apocalyptic world - the result of a secret US military medical project gone horribly wrong. Super vampire-like creatures unleashed on an unsuspecting North American populace, followed by cover-up, then massive military retaliation have led to a primal landscape of predators and prey. Cronin moves the story through one hundred years and chronicles human endurance in the face of unprecedented catastrophe.
