Putting this in March 'cause I finished it yesterday

The Footprints of God by Greg Iles ****

Another fast-paced thriller from a master of the genre, this one dealing with a group of scientists working on developing a self-aware AI (artificual intelligence) . At the fore of the project is the brilliant, mega-rich computer designer who is suffering from a fatal disease and wants to gain imortality - not for his body, but for his brain. Opposing him is Dr. David Tennant, Nobel-prize winning physician who has been appointed by the President as ethicist to the project, code named Trinity. As the project nears completion, the possibility of mankind being held hostage by a machine becomes all too evident and the rift between Tennant and the Project Trinity backers puts his life in danger.

25) The Cat Manual by Michael Ray Taylor 4 stars

A hidden document on a computer is found and translated from cat language by the author. Wisdom from the older cats is passed on to the kittens - and, yes, they DO think they own us!

I just got these for my Kindle and decided to read through them again. They are a lot easier to handle on the Kindle than in book form.

Fifty Shades Darker by E L James

6 stars - If you can get past all the sexually explicit parts of the book, which are a couple times per chapter, the story is very compelling and good.

This is the second book in this series. It is a very good story but not for everyone. VERY sexually explicit.

Silent Witness Rebecca Forster 2.5

0451214242
This is the 2nd book with Josie Baylor Bates and Archer. This time Archer is accused of the murder of his 1st wife child. This book is only about 1/2 as good as the first. If this were a movie, I would say that it was over-acted. Archer's response to the whole thing just seemed mental. So different from his behavior in the 1st book. It made the book very hard to read.
Oddly, I am reading the 3rd book. Hopefully it will be better.

Both the Whites and Indians seek scalps to get bounty money from their respective governments. The Deerslayer will not take a scalp and is reluctant to kill a man or any animal when it isn't neccesary.
This is a good book full of captures and escapes.
Cooper continually remarks on the beauty of nature.

It's about dueling illusionists that fall in love while part of a night cirus. The circus is by far the most intriguing character. Erin Morgenstern's writing is lyrical and enchanting. It makes me think of Florence + The Machine's sweeping ballads.

The Secret Lives of Wives by Iris Krasnow***** 5 stars

In raw, candid, titillating stories, Krasnow's cast of wise women give voice to the truth about marriage and the importance of maintaining a strong sense of self apart from the relationship. Some spend summers separately from their partners. Some make time for wine with the girls. One septuagenarian has a recurring date with an old flame from high school. In every case, the marriage operates on many tracks, giving both spouses license to pursue the question "Who am I apart from my marriage?" Krasnow's goal is to give women permission to create their own marriages at any age.

The Meaning of Food by Patricia Harris, David Lyon and Sue McLaughlin*** 3 stars

I didn’t like the flow of this book. I don’t like turning a page and finding that the sentence I was reading is not finished on this page. Instead, the book would insert a completely different section over the next two pages. You would think that turning an additional page would produce the rest of the hanging sentence, but in most cases, the next pages held recipes. I had a lot of back and forth reading, which I found tedious.

Bonnie - Iris Johanson **** (4)

This finally solves the mystery of a child who was killed several years ago, and has been a fixture in a series of books about Eve Duncan, who became a ferensic scupturer to help identify murdered children. It was good to finally resolve the story, and I could not put it down, but if you haven't read the series, you probably won't enjoy this.

For One More Day by Mitch Albom

As a child, Charley "Chick" Benetto is a child of divorce, forced to choose between his mother and father. He grows up and starts a family of his own. But one fateful weekend, he leaves his mother to secretly be with his father, and she dies while he is gone. This haunts him for years, and leads to depression and alcohol abuse. When he finds out his daughter is married and did not invite him to the wedding, he can't handle it anymore, and decides to kill himself. But somewhere between this world and the next, he encounters his mother again, in the town he grew up in, and gets to spend one more day with her, and asks questions he has always yearned to ask. By the end of the day, Chick discovers how little he really knew about his mother, and how her love saved their family, and he hopes for a second chance with his own family.

I loved this story, including the last page, the ending really surprised me and was really touching.

24) Bloodlines by Keith Cockrell 4.5 stars

Mr. Cockrell draws a strong feminine lead in this tale about a small barrier island haunted by a serial killer (family). Shannon is a "Yankee" archeology student studying the old forts of Annuba Island when she sees a young girl disappear into the roots of an old oak tree. She saves the child, but then the true horrors begin. By turns scary, funny, and some romance.

4* The Doctor's Lady by Jody Hedlund

The year is 1836. Priscilla White knows she will never be able to be a wife or mother, and feels called upon to be a missionary. Dr. Eli Earnest is back from Oregon Country just long enough to raise awareness for the need of missionaries for the Native Americans before heading back west, where Eli plans to build a clinic. But both Priscilla and Eli receive news from the missionary board that they will no longer send unmarried men and women into the field.

Neither Eli nor Priscilla wish to get married-to anyone- but they make an agreement that they will marry for convenience, a business arrangement so that they can both do the missionary work they want to do. As they journey west, their partnership is tested by the hardships of the trip and unexpected feelings in their hearts. Many people are also against women traveling along on the journey; no woman has ever traveled so far west before, and many doubt that Priscilla has the stamina to do it.

This story is inspired by real life missionaries Marcus and Narcissa Whitman; the author used Narcissa's diary as an outline for the story, and many of the events in the story that happened to Eli and Priscilla really happened to the Whitmans. Narcissa, and her travel companion Eliza Spalding were the first white women to cross the Continental Divide and travel that far west.

The Beginning of Infinity by David Deutsch*** 3 stars

Throughout history, mankind has struggled to understand life's mysteries, from the mundane to the seemingly miraculous. David Deutsch argues that explanations have a fundamental place in the universe. They have unlimited scope and power to cause change, and the quest to improve them is the basic regulating principle not only of science but of all successful human endeavor.

Plum Spooky by Janet Evanovich**** 4 stars

Wulf Grimoire is a world wanderer and an opportunist who can kill without remorse and disappear like smoke. He’s chosen Martin Munch, boy genius, as his new business partner, and he’s chosen the Barrens as his new playground. Martin Munch would be happy if he could just get a woman naked and tied to a tree. Bounty hunter Stephanie Plum has Munch on her most-wanted list for failure to appear in court. Diesel is an über bounty hunter with special skills when it comes to tracking men and pleasing women. He’s after Grimoire, and now he’s also after Munch. And if truth were told, he wouldn’t mind setting Stephanie Plum in his crosshairs. Diesel and Plum hunt down Munch and Grimoire, following them into the Barrens, surviving cranberry bogs, the Jersey Devil, a hair-raising experience, sand in their underwear, and, of course . . . monkeys.

The Secret Daughter by Shilpi Somaya Gowda 6 stars

Somer’s life is everything she imagined it would be—she’s newly married and has started her career as a physician in San Francisco—until she makes the devastating discovery she never will be able to have children.

The same year in India, a poor mother makes the heartbreaking choice to save her newborn daughter’s life by giving her away. It is a decision that will haunt Kavita for the rest of her life, and cause a ripple effect that travels across the world and back again.

Asha, adopted out of a Mumbai orphanage, is the child that binds the destinies of these two women. We follow both families, invisibly connected until Asha’s journey of self-discovery leads her back to India.

Compulsively readable and deeply touching, Secret Daughter is a story of the unforeseen ways in which our choices and families affect our lives, and the indelible power of love in all its many forms.

I read Mountain Meadows Massacre by Juanita Brooks. I'll give it a 4 out of 6. This book is not that pleasant to read, however it was an extremely important book for me to read in terms of understanding a piece of my family history. I didn't really fully know what to expect. I came away with more compassion for a bunch of people in very difficult circumstances than I expected to have going in. Now I am more able to lay a terrible deed to rest in my own mind that has haunted people that I know in the city I live in for over 150 years and kept the rumor mills buzzing about what happened and who was responsible.

So strange that these things can live so long, but things from the civil war, which happened about the same time, still greatly affect our nation. I think that what I learned from this book more than anything is that it is very easy for us to judge people without really understanding their circumstances and what might compel them to do something unthinkable under normal circumstances. I am not trying to condone--but I did come to understand it a bit better, which makes me more able to leave it alone. I have one more book to read on the subject before I let it go, but I am going to need a couple of month's break before I take up this story again.

The City Of Bones by Cassandra Clare- 4 stars

When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder -- much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing -- not even a smear of blood -- to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know. . . .

I had much higher hopes for this book and maybe it was just that the subject matter was mostly depressing but I really struggled to finish this book.

The Widow's War by Sally Gunning

When Lyddie Berry's husband drowns in 1761 in a whaling disaster, Lyddie discovers her status as a widow is not equal to her status as a wife. She is entitled to her "widow's thirds", but all the rest of her property goes to her closest living male relative, her tight-fisted son-in-law Nathan.

Although she is grieving and destitute, Lyddie finds the strength challenge Nathan when he violates the terms of her husband's will, and refuses to sign over her third of the share when he wants to sell the house. She also begins to question other values held in the community about a woman's place, and challenges them at the risk of her reputation and her home.

I really enjoyed this book, the pace of the storytelling never lagged, and Lyddie's struggle with widowhood and gaining independence was credible. It was interesting to learn what life was like for a woman at that time.

This is a whole different setting and storyline than Elm Creek. Winemaking, Prohibition, intrigue, and celiac disease are all topics that highlight the story of Rose, Lars, and family.

I was also disappointed in the ending, it seemed rather shallow of a "resolution" for the female character

Detective Inspector Huss by Helene Tursten ******

I really liked this book - even with all of the Swedish words and locations.
One of the most prominent citizens of Göteborg, Sweden plunges to his death off an apartment balcony, but what appears to be a "Society Suicide" soon reveals itself to be a carefully plotted murder. Irene Huss--wife, mother, and murder investigator of the Göteborg Violent Crimes Unit--finds herself embroiled in a complex and high-stakes investigation. As Hess and her team begin to uncover the victim's hidden past, they are dragged into Sweden's seamy underworld of street gangs, struggling immigrants, and neo-Nazis in order to catch the killer.

Slowly and surely wins the race.

Set in a small town in French Canada, near Montreal. Really good characters and plots which maintain your interest. Low on terror or gore. High on character development and genuine suspense.

The Affair - Lee Childs 4*

I fell in love with this series a couple of years ago, and while this is the latest in the series, it is the one that goes back to the beginning of Jack Reacher leaving the Army and becoming the traveler that he is in later novels. His sense of right and wrong may be a little different than mine - he does not object to killing off the bad guys - but he is principled and does not do things outside of his own sense of what is right. There is always a mystery, and Jack Reacher works hard to solve the problem and right wrongs.

Down By the River - Robyn Carr 3*
Just Over The Mountain - Robyn Carr 3*
Deep in the Valley - Robyn Carr 3*

These are a series of novels about a community called Grace Valley, and the people who live there. Some of the characters were found in the Virgin River novels, a series of about 18 books. These books have romance, but basically are just good stoies of small town life and the the growing pains of the towns. There are villians, eccentrics, crabby but lovable characters, and they are just plain enjoyable to read!

21) Syndrome by Thomas Hoover 4 stars

Stem cell research run amok. Brilliant CEO Winston Bartlett is funding research at the Gerex Corporation for stem cell research. His chief researcher physician Carl Van de Vliet, has promising trials on-going to end Alzheimer's, cardiac disease, and other conditions. But, the "Beta" patient, news star Kristen, got an injection of ,stem cells to make her look younger. Bartlett also got an injection when it looked like Kristen was doing well - unfortunately, the "getting younger" didn't stop - and Kristen was regressing to childhood. If the syndrome can't be stopped, Bartlett faces the same looming horrible end. Ally suffers from aortic stenosis - and it is killing her slowly - she also has type AB blood (as does Bartlett). She is coerced into the study so her treated blood can save Bartlett.

This book is so close to wat's actually out there, it's scary!

Night Circus - Erin Morgenstern

I cannot stop thinking about the magic and mystery of this book - it was mutli-faceted and so well contrived.

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.

But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway—a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love—a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands.

True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus performers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead.

Cheers,

Kelly

Love Finds You in Homestead, Iowa by Melanie Dobson

From the title, you might think this is just a "fluffy" romance, but there's so much more depth to the story than that.

Times are hard in 1894 Chicago, after losing his job at a bank due to the economic depression, Jacob Hirsch rides the rails west with his 4 year old daughter Cassie. When a life threatening illness strands them in Homestead, Iowa, the local Amana villagers welcome Jacob and his daughter into their peaceful society. Leisel, a young Amana woman, nurses Cassie back to health, and the elders of the village offer Jacob work. But things become complicated when he begins to fall in love with Leisel. Will he fight to be able to stay in Amana and prove to the elders he is worthy? Or will Leisel be willing to leave her beloved community and live in the outside world with Jacob and Cassie?

I really enjoyed this story, it was a real page turner, and there was a lot of historical information on what it was like to live in the Amana colonies.

Once by Cameron Dokey. Rating 3.5.
This is 3-in-1 book, the 3 stories have been published earlier in single books. If you like fairytales with twists, you will like this book. The first story, Before Midnight is Cinderella, second, Golden (Rapunzel) and third, Wild Orchid (Mulan). From all three, the second book, the ending surprised me and at same time, Golden gave me the warmest feeling :D The first book, I like how the characters other than the heroin have more definition, especially the stepmother and the father. Wild Orchid, I can't hardly wait for the moment when of Mulan's historic moment but to get to that point, I had to endure chapters on days of Mulan that build her into the China's hero - the chapters are necessary but too long for my opinion.

Frida by Hayden Herrera***** 5stars

This engrossing biography of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo reveals a woman of extreme magnetism and originality, an artist whose sensual vibrancy came straight from her own experiences: her childhood near Mexico City during the Mexican Revolution; a devastating accident at age eighteen that left her crippled and unable to bear children; her tempestuous marriage to muralist Diego Rivera and intermittent love affairs with men as diverse as Isamu Noguchi and Leon Trotsky; her association with the Communist Party; her absorption in Mexican folklore and culture; and her dramatic love of spectacle. Here is the tumultuous life of an extraordinary twentieth-century woman -- with illustrations as rich and haunting as her legend.

Don’t Ask by Donald E. Westlake**** 4 stars

Dortmunder has a job offer. He's been hired by third parties to pull off heists in the past, but never to lay his hands on anything this peculiar. Frankly, it's a bone. A femur which, 800 years ago, was part of a 16-year-old girl who, having been killed and eaten by her own family, was made a saint by the Church. The femur, her only relic, is all that's left. Now two small eastern European countries - Tsergovia and Votskojek - are fighting like dogs over...well, the bone.

The House at Riverton by Kate Morton**** 4 stars

Grace Bradley went to work at Riverton House as a servant when she was just a girl, before WWI. For years her life was inextricably tied up with the Hartford family, most particularly the two daughters, Hannah and Emmeline. In the summer of 1924, at a glittering society party held at the house, a young poet shot himself. The only witnesses were Hannah and Emmeline and only they, and Grace, know the truth.

In 1999, when Grace is ninety-eight years old and living out her last days in a nursing home, she is visited by a young director who is making a film about the events of that summer. She takes Grace back to Riverton House and reawakens her memories. Told in flashback, this is the story of Grace's youth during the last days of Edwardian aristocratic privilege shattered by war, of the vibrant twenties and the changes she witnessed as an entire way of life vanished forever.

Drowned Hopes by Donald E. Westlake**** 4 stars

After a typically unrewarding night of attempted burglary, Dortmunder comes home to find ex-cellmate Tom Jimson ensconced in the living room. Jimson, given a 70th-birthday release from an overcrowded state prison, is as calmly venal and vicious as ever as he asks Dortmunder's help in reclaiming a $700,000 stash from an old robbery. The loot was buried in an upstate New York town that was subsequently flooded to become part of New York City's reservoir system. Jimson's plan to blow up the reservoir dam will doom nearby towns, so Dortmunder must concoct a more humane solution.

Conqueror by Conn Iggulden *****

I am a sucker for well-written historical fiction and Conn Iggulden has become almost an addiction: the 4 volumes of Julius Caesar; 3 books on Genghis Khan; one follow-up on the Mongol empire after Genghis' death; and now the greatest Khan of all - Kublai.

With the death of the last of Genghis' sons, leadership of the vast empire moves to the next generation. The 8 grandsons warily eyeing each other as well as the ultimate prize - title of "The Great Khan" and total obedience from all the tribes. Iggulden writes rip-roaring combat scenes, with an emphasis on historically accurate accounting of battles, tactics, weaponry, and believable characters. We see Kublai evolve from the bookish scholar with refined Chin robes and manners to the brilliant tactician who assails the ancient empire of Sung China and builds the incredible city of Xanadu. After seven years in the field, Kublai's armies are within sight of the Sung capitol city when word reaches him of the death of the great Khan (his cousin Mongke) at the hand of a Persian assassin. Kublai declares himself the new Khan only to discover his younger brother has claimed the same title . For the first time Mongol armies will face each other in an epic civil war whose outcome will change the face of the world.

Blowout Catherine Coulter 3 stars
Point Blank Catherine Coulter 3 stars
Double Take Catherine Coulter 3 stars
TailSpin Catherine Coulter 3.5 stars

These books are repetitive and predictable, but man-o-man, I am a sucker for a serial character who-dun-it.

Each book: Enter one beautiful/handsome person in distress (usually the girl, but not always), add a fortuitous encounter with the perfect law man/woman, add the always perfect small town, the always rich town matriarch/patriarch and the plot is set. Oh yeah, the person in distress and the law person always are perfectly made for each other and they know in 2 days or less.

For Blowout: The murder victim is a Supreme Court justice, the person in distress, his step-daughter, the law: a DC metro detective. Add a little side of the supernatural in a side plot and you have it.

For point Blank: The almost murder victim is a FBI agent, the law: local cop, plot one, what happened to FBI agent, 2 who is trying to kill Agent Savich, how long before the plots intersect.

For Double Take: almost murder victim, young accused wife of recently murdered psychic, law: FBi agent who just happens to be on the SF pier when the victim is attacked, surprise, plot one, Who tried to kill her, intersects with Agent Savich's case. Mayhem ensues, happily ever after.

For Tail Spin: almost murder victim: Senator's illigetimate daughter, Law: FBI agent (twist, FBI is also under attack). plot one: who is after female victim, plot 2 who is after FBI agent.

The Odyssey by Homer (translated by Alexander Pope) 6*

This great epic poem was orally passed down until writing was available on papyrus around 700 - 800 BC. Then it was written down.
It follows the hero Ulysses' adventures from the fall of Troy till he reaches his home and his wife nine years later.
Pope does a wonderful job translating and keeping the story in poetic form.
There are a number of movies based on the Odyssey, but none do justice to this wonderful work.

Mockingjay******6******

This is the last of the Hunger Games series. I loved this series and couldn't put it down (I stayed up to 4 am to finish it). If you've not read it...read it. Being youth fiction, I expected something predictable, it wasn't. One of the best series I've read in a while.

Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay - 5 stars

In the summer of 1942, the French police arrested thousands of Jewish families and held them outside of Paris before shipping them off to Auschwitz. On the 60th anniversary of the roundups, an expatriate American journalist covering the atrocities discovers a personal connection—her apartment was formerly occupied by one such family. She resolves to find out what happened to Sarah, the 10-year-old daughter, who was the only family member to survive. The story is heart-wrenching, and Polly Stone gives an excellent performance, keeping a low-key tone through descriptions of horror that would elicit excessive dramatics from a less talented performer. Her characters are easy to differentiate, and her French accent is convincing. De Rosnay's novel is captivating, and the powerful narration gives it even greater impact. A St. Martin's hardcover. Mrs. Tuesday's Departure by Suzanne Anderson

Hungary's fragile alliance with Germany kept Natalie, an author, and her family out of harm's way during most of World War 2. Now as Hitler grows desperate in the waning years of the conflict, so does the threat to the people of Hungary. Natalie's younger sister Ilona married a Jewish man, putting her and her 12 year daughter Mila at risk. Meanwhile, Natalie's twin sister Anna, is falling into dementia.

When the Nazi's reach Budapest, Ilona and her husband leave, abandoning Mila. Natalie tries to keep what is left of her family safe, but Anna's paranoid outburst at the university where she use to teach threatens their only other chance to escape. Natalie is forced to make a choice, should she save her niece, or her sister?

This was a very compelling and haunting story, but too short. I think a few more chapters would have really rounded out this story. I think this book would make a great movie.

All She Ever Wanted by Barbara Freethy

6 stars - Was up to 1:00am last night to finish this book. Could not put it down!!!!

She was their closest friend, or so they thought -- until years later, when her secrets send them on a perilous search for the truth about who she really was ... and why she died ...

Ten years ago, during a party gone out of control, beautiful, vibrant Emily plummeted to her death, leaving her three best friends and sorority sisters -- Natalie, Laura and Madison -- devastated. None of them has ever forgotten that night -- or the role each may have played in Emily's death, the guilt that has pursued them, and the loss they still suffer.

Now an unknown writer has rocketed onto bestseller lists with a novel that eerily mirrors their own story. Who is he? How does he know the intimate details of their lives? And why is he accusing one of them of murder? As they begin to unravel the startling truth about their friend, each will rediscover a love she lost long ago and uncover secrets that will forever change her life... (Amazon review)

The Sound of a Scream by John Manning

6 stars - His books are just fantastic!!!

No Turning Back

Point Woebegone. From the moment Daphne May steps off the train, it's clear that this small Maine town is aptly named. Even before she reaches Swallowtail, the windswept house where she'll be working as a governess, Daphne's sense of foreboding is justified.

Nowhere To Hide

A waitress's gruesome death sets the whole town on edge--especially the wealthy, eccentric Witherspoon family. There are rumors, hostile whispers. Daphne tries to adjust to her strange surroundings and difficult pupil, finding a friend in local property developer Gregory Winston. Then a killer strikes again--and again. . .

No Accidents

A psychopath is culling his victims with brutal precision, and Daphne's arrival is far from random. But knowledge may come too late to save her from the secrets in her past, with a killer hiding in plain sight. . . (Amazon Review)

Growing Up Amish by Ira Wagler

Ira Wagler was born into an old order Amish community, frustrated by the rules and regulations, he left when he was 17, at 2am, leaving a note under his pillow for his family. Over the next 5 years, he would leave and return numerous times, torn between two worlds.

This was a well written book and real page turner, with real insights into Amish culture, I can understand why the author struggled so much with his faith. He writes the truth about being Amish but without the condemning the culture; even though he no longer lives in their world, he does have and appreciation for it. A very honest and moving story. The Amish are not perfect like some people paint them to be, they are human just like all of us.

One thing I learned reading the book is that all Amish are not the same, there are differences between groups, such as rules for where and if telephones are allowed, and cap styles for the women; some are more strict than others. As the author said in the book, Amish are often strange to other Amish.

I think I liked this the best of the three. The flow of information was better and I wasn't waiting around as much waiting for them to piece everything together like the other books.

The Silent Governess by Julie Klassen

This story takes place in Regency Era England. Olivia Keene is fleeing from a bad situation at home. After a rough night in the woods, she finds herself on private property and is accused of trespassing. She is injured while she is locked up, causing her to lose her voice.

Lord Bradley, owner of the estate on which she was found, comes to her rescue, but only because he is afraid that the secret she might have overheard while eavesdropping may come out. He sentences her to the position of nurse for his niece and nephew, who live with him at Brightwell Court, for the next 3 months. He keeps her under close scrutiny, to determine just how much she knows about him, and whether she plans to expose him. He also learns that she has secrets of her own she is hiding.

I really enjoyed this story; it was riveting right from the start with several interesting twists and turns towards the end. It was also interesting to learn about the life of a governess in that time and place; it was often a lonely life; they were not servants and could not befriend any of them, yet they were not considered family either. They spent most of their time with the children and rarely with other adults.

Perfume by Patrick Süskind. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I love this style of writing, and the was Suskind really manages to somehow convey the sense of smell so clearly. The writing loses nothing from being translated from German, and Jean-Baptiste Grenouille (the main character and villian) is described not as being evil, but unnerving, which makes it all the more sinister.
