23) Under a Vampire Moon (umpteenth book in the Argeneau Vampire series) by Lynsay Sands 4 stars

The premise in Ms Sand's series is the "vampires" have nanos in them that repair damages, keeping them at the appearance of someone in the mids 20's to 3o's. The nanos require extra blood to do this. They can go out in the daylight, but the resulting sun damage requires even more blood intake. Christian is over 500, and meets his potential lifemate in the Caribbean Islands. Caro is 42, and appalled at her attraction to the "boy toy" Christian. How can Christian overcome her fear of being a cougar? And why is Caro getting so clumsy?

(I finished this yesterday, but took a lazy day off and didn't record it)

A Bad Day For Sorry Littlefield, Sophie 4.5

Protagonist is a 50's female with a slightly cranky, takes no prisoners attitude. The character was a nice departure from all the beautiful people that seem to populate most books.

Nothing special, though Beaumont is still a town filled with characters. Though the characters occasionally feel like prototypes for the cast of the Stephanie Plum books.

Quite a slow start for the "Full" series...almost 1/3 in before it was up to speed. But a nice twist on the culprit.

5. "That Old Cape Magic" by Richard Russo

My April bookclub selection. I chose this book for the club and wish I picked another. I think I liked the title and book jacket more than anything. A very slow moving story. I believe it is basically a story about a marriage and how parents can affect the behavior in it.

I read three books in April.

#1 - Death Trap by M. William Phelps. ***

Death Trap is a true crime novel (one of my favorite categories) Death Trap is about a sociopath, Jessica McCord, who killed her ex-husband and his wife because they were in a custody battle. I'm writing my own book about a sociopath so I read this book mainly for research.

#2 - The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood ****

The Handmaid's Tale is women's literature, post apocalyptic. The Handmaid's Tale is about a woman who loses all her rights (all women do in this novel). If the women aren't married, and they are at child bearing age, they have to be the handmaid for married couples that can't have children. The story is kind of scary with everything that is going on right now in the US. I read it to cure my Hunger Games hangover, and it was a great read.

#3 - White Girl Problems by Babe Walker ***

White Girl Problems I would categorize as autobiography/comedy. White Girl problems is an autobiography from a privileged spoiled California brat. Each chapter is a story of something that happened to her. Be warned, if you aren't into raunchy humor, you aren't going to like this book. It is pretty offensive. I tend to read these types of books every three or four reads because I read some heavy stuff.

Two books - both by Betty Neels 4.5 *

Never While the Grass Grows and Saturday's Child

Gentle classic romances - Ms. Neels started writing in the early 1970s, I think and she published for at least 20 years mostly for Harlequin. Wonderful for winding down (99% of the time) tho fairly predictable Doctor + Nurse and always includes Holland.

A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving

In the summer of 1953, two 11 year old boys, who are best friends, are playing a Little League baseball game when a foul ball hit by one of the boys, Owen Meany, kills the other boy's mother. Owen Meany doesn't believe in accidents though, he believes he is God's instrument, and what happens to him after he hits that foul ball is extraordinary.

I can't really say anything else about what this story is about, without giving the "magic" of it away. Owen Meany is a character I will never forget, and not just because of his unusual voice and his diminutive size. I really enjoyed this story. I found myself rereading certain paragraphs several times because they were so beautifully written. This is a story I will never forget, it will stick with me forever. The last few pages reveal a few "aha" moments.

20) Parched (A Paranormal Romance, Book One of Parched series) by Z.L. Arkadie 2.5 stars

Not a total waste, but kinda muddled. Clarity always knew she was different, and could sense what others were thinking. But, she didn't know she wasn't totally human - she carries the Blood of Life, and vampires will try to drink her dry (they're parched for life)

And 2 by Catherine Astolfo

21) The Bridgeman 3 stars
22) Victim 3 stars
Emily Taylor is the elementary school principal in a small town in Ontario. A mixture of Native Canadians and non-natives, the people seem small-town friendly. Until, that is, in the first book, Emily finds the body of the school maintenance man dead in the school basement (he was also the town's Bridgeman, raising and lowering the locks for boats passing thru), and a mysterious "Walking Bear" appears in book 2. Some good Native legends and traditions. Throughout the books, Emily refers to a tragedy that happened to her and her husband, Langford, many years before they moved to Burchill. We never actually find out what the tragedy is in these books, but Langford changed his name and Emily is always worried if their frinds find out, the scandal will be brought out.

Lone Wolf by Jodi Piccoult- 5 stars

In the wild, when a wolf knows its time is over, when it knows it is of no more use to its pack, it may sometimes choose to slip away. Dying apart from its family, it stays proud and true to its nature. Humans aren’t so lucky.

Luke Warren has spent his life researching wolves. He has written about them, studied their habits intensively, and even lived with them for extended periods of time. In many ways, Luke understands wolf dynamics better than those of his own family. His wife, Georgie, has left him, finally giving up on their lonely marriage. His son, Edward, twenty-four, fled six years ago, leaving behind a shattered relationship with his father. Edward understands that some things cannot be fixed, though memories of his domineering father still inflict pain. Then comes a frantic phone call: Luke has been gravely injured in a car accident with Edward’s younger sister, Cara.

Suddenly everything changes: Edward must return home to face the father he walked out on at age eighteen. He and Cara have to decide their father’s fate together. Though there’s no easy answer, questions abound: What secrets have Edward and his sister kept from each other? What hidden motives inform their need to let their father die . . . or to try to keep him alive? What would Luke himself want? How can any family member make such a decision in the face of guilt, pain, or both? And most importantly, to what extent have they all forgotten what a wolf never forgets: that each member of a pack needs the others, and that sometimes survival means sacrifice?

Another tour de force by Picoult, Lone Wolf brilliantly describes the nature of a family: the love, protection, and strength it can offer—and the price we might have to pay for those gifts. What happens when the hope that should sustain a family is the very thing tearing it apart?

Ghouls Just Haunt To Have Fun - Victoria Laurie - 3.5

MJ, Gilley and Steven go Hollywood. Well, actually San Francisco. Gilley has sneakily signed MJ to be on a show (Ghostbusters meets Antiques Road Show). They stay at the Duke hotel (known for its haunting). And there are ghosts everywhere, and one is really nasty.

What's A Ghoul To Do? Victoria Laurie - 4.0

Victoria Laurie is the author of the Psychic Eyes series. The protagonist in this new series also deals with the paranormal and has moved from reading for people who want to talk to the dead to ghostbusting, helping ghosts move to the other side. This 1st book in the series takes MJ and Gilley to a hunting cabin (mansion) to find out the true story of what happened to Grandfather, surprise, it wasn't suicide. Enough complexity to keep you interested. Not as good as the Private Eye series, IMHO

Jack Murphy is soooo good as a detective yet he can't figure out how not to be a total jerk, if fact, he doesn't even know he is a jerk. He is soooo "manly" they all love him. His karma is so bad that all the criminals zone in on him, gotta kill him. Fortunately the laws of the world do not apply to him since the bad guy is so bad. Just too much macho crap for me. Hated to be stuck traveling and these were the only books I had at hand.

If you are a "Virgin River" fan, as I am, you will enjoy getting back together with your friends, and watching a new romance grow in the wonderful town of Virgin River. Nora is a single mother with two young daughters, an ex-husband in prison, and not much else except a wonderful personality and great work ethic. She gets a job picking apples, and....well, I dont' want to spoil the plot! Enjoy this one - we all need some not-so-serious-reading!

Hi Ben, I am new to spark bookworms - I love to read and worked in a library for many years. I was enthralled by your reading choices and I read your reviews of them - re F. Scott Fitzgerald - I would recommend - The Paris Wife - it is about Hemenway and his first wife - a fictionalized biography and the Fitzgeralds play a part in it - he certainly wrote about how he lived.

I belong to a book club and have read - Gendarmes, The Wives of Henry Oades, Fathers and Sons, Room, People of the Book, The Art of Racing in the Rain - which I loved.

I also like lighter stuff - John Grisham, John Sandford, Donna Leon - I like cops, lawyers and italian cops stories - the Donna Leon stories are set in Venice - so it is reading a mystery that has many elements of what I love about Italy - the city itself, food, art - you get the idea.

I said I would never use a kindle - nothing like holding a real book in your hands - however, you make a compelling statement for buying one.

Happy Reading and keep up the good work re your weight loss.

Hope to hear from you

Rosalie Dino

Charlotte Lennox: The Female Quixote 5*

This book is a classic for a reason! The main character, Arabella, has grown up in a secluded home, reading only the dramatic, improbable French romances. When her father decides she needs to be married, she is plunged into the real world and expects that everything will fall in line like her star-crossed lovers in her books. Hilarity ensues!

I actually laughed out loud at this book, which is rare for me and 18th-century writing. My favorite character is her poor love interest, who tries to keep her from getting into too much trouble.

Spike Berenger Wanted to be a rock musician, but ended up with running Rockin' Security, and being a PI for celebrities. An old style (redeemed druggie) rocker, Flame, is dead, and his not so loving son is the chief suspect. Or, was it the cult like religious group Flame joined when he got out of rehab?

Eh, could gave been better, but not awful. Robyn is deaf, and loves to ski. She meets Keil and his brother TJ at a distant cabin in the mountains. Keil is a contender for the new alpha of the pack - Robyn doesn't know she's a wolf. Luv (& sex scenes) ensue.

Vanity Fair by William Makepeace Thackeray 6*

This great classic of Victorian Literature ranks with the best of Dickens' works.
Thackeray writes of English society and class struggle in the early 19th century.

The Notebooks of Leonardo by Leonardo da Vinci 2* (for the kindle edition)

I did not finish this work. This was the kindle edition which does not have the diagrams to which the text keeps referring. Maybe if I paid the over $230 price for the hard cover book, it would have had those diagrams. As it is, the notebooks are not very intelligible.

Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe 6*

Stowe shows the evils of slavery and her book published in 1852 helped start The Civil War. Some of the characters are Christ like while others, notably Simon Legree, are quite evil. This isn't a great book, but its historic significance cannot be undervalued.

Nana By Emile Zola 5*

Nana was a prostitute who rose to prominence in the theater and then swept all the wealthy men of Paris off their feet. Her greed destroyed countless men in a decadent society.

Captain Canuck the Complete Edition 4*
Comic book about our nation's fearless hero!

Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons 5*

A Grief Observed by CS Lewis 5*
He wrote this after his wife died. It's very short (only 64 pages) but very powerful.

Griffin & Sabine 6*!!!
This book is told in postcards and letters and is simply delicious. It's like a picture book for adults!

Great Canadian Books compiled by the Vancouver Public Library 3*
They chose 133 books that they feel are the best of Canadian literature. Some I agree with, others I don't.

The Garden Party & other Stories by Katherine Mansfield 4*
Her short stories are phenomenal, not a word out of place. She never ends a story too soon or lets it drag on too long.

The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer by Siddhartha Mukherjee

There were two reasons I wanted to read this book. The first one is, like most people, there have been people in my family and circle of friends touched by cancer. Some beat it, some have died, and some are still living with it. The second reason is that I am living with cancer myself, stage IV breast cancer. I did not read this with any hope of finding a "cure", but I wanted to understand my disease better.

This is a very readable history of cancer, going back to the very beginning of medicine and science thousands of years ago. It is a story told in layman's terms, but the author does not "talk down" to the reader either. It shows just how far we have come in the battle against cancer, and gives a glimpse of what kind of treatments we may have in the future. The author discusses the setbacks and victories over the years, and shows a very human side of the oncologists, scientist, and those patients that were brave enough to try treatments that were very new at the time.

Cancer is more than just one disease, therefore, there will not be a "one cure fits all" solution for it. After reading this, I don't think cancer will be cured in my lifetime, I've accepted the fact that I will eventually die of my disease, but I think with each subsequent generation, we will be a little bit better off, and have more hope, than before. And I also do not believe, as I know some people do, that there is a conspiracy to NOT cure cancer in order to keep the medical and pharmaceutical fields in business. (If you do believe that, you need to read this book and educate yourself.)

I wish that there were a few more personal stories included of Dr. Mukherjee and his interaction with his patients, those were my favorite parts of the book. He is very compassionate and caring man.

My name is Shari; I have been a Sparker since July 2006, I am now in hospice care for metastatic breast cancer, but I'm not letting cancer stop me from Sparking!

Scent of the Missing: Love and Partnership with a Search-and-Rescue Dog
by Susannah Charleson

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/69270
61-scent-of-the-missing

SUCH a good book about Ms Charleson's journey to becoming a dog handler in the Search & Rescue group she volunteers with. Aside from the glimpse into all the training, experiences and research before the puppy arrived, she describes a number of the searches she has participated in through the years.

She does not romanticize the work - which can be filthy, gory and/or heart-wrenching even with a successful find.

The bond between handler and S&R dog is incredible as it matures...definitely a must read!

A familiy with 6 boys and 2 girls (all grown up and single) all incredibly good looking. Each book is a family member falling in love... Mom's a widow, so you can bet there will be nine books before it is over, LOL. and I will probably read them all...

I enjoyed the cyborg series by Laurann Dohner, I thought I'd try this author on a friend's recommendation. Didn't enjoy it as much, altho the premise was pretty good. The cyborgs were to be terminated, but some had managed to become self aware. They escaped to form their own society. (warning, explicit sex)

Slammed by Colleen Hoover 5*

Synopsis:
Layken Cohen's eighteenth year is proving to be the ultimate test of her resolve.

Following the death of her father, she is forced to move across the country after the start of her senior year. Just when she thinks all hope is lost, she meets her new neighbor, Will Cooper. An intriguing twenty-one year old with a passion for Slam Poetry. Through their similar pasts, Layken and Will form an immediate and intense connection. A connection neither of them knew they needed, until they found it.
Unfortunately for Layken, the cards just aren't in her favor. She is slammed to the core when a shocking revelation proves that a relationship between the two won't work.

It can't work.

Forced to interact on a daily basis, Layken and Will struggle to find a balance between that which keeps them apart and the feelings that pull them together.

And that's only the beginning.

Slammed is a 70,000 word young adult novel that intertwines heartache with humor, desires with ethics, and ultimately proves that the harsh reality of death can sometimes be overcome by the beauty of life.

My review:
I loved this book. I couldn't put it down and just had to find out what was going to happen with Lake and Will.

Is this out of 6 stars? Or five? If six, The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman was 5 1/2 stars.

The story is of Jewish women who are caught up in the battle of Masada. It's historical fiction, but the women leap off the page, in part because the narration switches from one woman to another. It's a gripping story, well-told. Everything ties together, but not so conveniently that it seems contrived; there are a few surprises throughout the novel.

16) Pups in Tea Cups by Carolyn McCray, DVM 4 stars

Dr. McCray is a veterinarian, and (like I was) previously a big dog snob. When she got her chihuahua (and I got my Pomeranian), she subcumbed to the delights of the "Littleness" . This book is a quick read, mostly tales of how the little ones can steal your heart, while remaining fiercely independent, She also has a few "Bigness" stories (a lab, for instance) and non-dogs (a cat). She also says that some little dogs (especially the youngest ones) will not eat well - because they don't eat enough to stop being hungry, they don't associate eating with ending hunger. Most people (me, too, before she explained it) would think "They'll eat when they're hungry" - but the little ones can literally starve to death with food in front of them! emoticon

My favorite book that I have read this month is Fablehaven by Brandon Mull. I would give it 5 out of 6 stars for just being fun to read. It is juvenile or young adult fiction, and it has a lively pace, and lots of fun characters. This is the first book in a five part series, and I am looking forward to reading the other books. It is about a brother and sister who visit their grandparents. Unbeknownst to them, their grandparents run a wildlife preserve for magical creatures, but the adventure just keeps escalating to the end of the book. Lots of fun to read--I think this would be a great read together for a family.

The author's heroine, Ivy Malone continutes to captivate. The humor that shines through the Christian and the mystery aspects of the book are simply delightful. I thought the portrayal of Southeast Oklahoma and its inhabitants was a bit over the top in the first few chapters; but the rest of the book was as condensending about the area.

Quit stuffing your face and face your stuff.

Seasons: A Real Story of an Amish Girl by Elizabeth Byler Younts

This story is based on the life of the author's grandmother. All the events that take place were true.

Lydia Lee was the oldest child of a poor Amish family and grew up during the Great Depression. Her family struggles to survive, but they never lose their faith in God. When tragedy strikes, Lydia's faith is tested beyond what any child should endure, but she remembers that all things in life have their seasons.

The spring of her life has been spent in sadness and heartache; will she see a summer of true love, and a harvest of happiness?

I really enjoyed this book, and I could tell the author wrote from the heart. I could picture her sitting and listening to her grandmother tell the story of her life. It was often heartbreaking to read of what the children especially had to go through during the Depression, not just Amish children, but all children. Things like not having cups, and having to drink out of tin cans, and being happy at Christmas just to get a piece of fruit and a pair of socks. Reading Lydia's story really made me appreciate the life I had a child, and the one I have now.

The story ends when Lydia is still in her twenties; I hope one day the author writes a sequel. I would love to learn about the rest of the "seasons" of her life.
