The Best of Friends by Susan Mallery ***

I love this author but this book had some REALLY unlikable characters, but the redeeming factor for me was the humor and is the reason it got 3 stars.

Children of Exile

3 stars
A junior or YA novel
If you are going to read a series by this author, read the Shadow Children instead. This one might become an engaging series, but the first book did not inspire me to continue reading the rest.

What's Eating Gilbert Grape
By Peter Hedges
4 stars
3.5 stars rounded Up to 4. WEGG is not a comfortable book to read. Poor Gilbert. He has such a weight on his shoulders: a dysfunctional family, two inappropriate romantic relationships going on, and not much of a future in his sights. His family and friends ask too much of him, and Gilbert is struggling under the strain.
And yet I kept thinking, "What about Amy?" I could see Gilbert moving on, moving 'away', but not Amy. She will be the last soldier standing, with the responsibility of looking after Arnie, and will likely end up much like her mother. I know the book was called What's Eating GILBERT GRAPE, but I can't help crying, "What about AMY?"

The Ragged Edge of Night
By Olivia Hawker
4 stars
A different angle from which to view WW2: from the perspective of German citizens who despised and worked against the Nazi party. When a Franciscan friar's school is closed, his disabled students are 'relocated' and he is conscripted into the army and quickly loses heart. An injury returns him to civilian life where he marries a widow with three children and sets out to "be of help".

High Achiever by Tiffany Jenkins 4 stars

This book just goes to show you that you just never know what has gone on in the life of a social media favorite. No holds barred in the funniest way!

DIET IS A FOUR LETTER WORD!!!!

We are constantly creating our "karma" or destiny through our intentions, thoughts and deeds in this moment. It is achieved through countless deliberate acts of selflessness.

It's hard to be happy with others if we are not happy with ourselves.

Just keep on moving and you'll get there.

If you ever want to feel good about yourself, go out and help someone else!

Miracle by Danielle Steel

2 stars

A widower, a divorcee and a carpenter; each trying to escape their pasts; come together after a storm hits San Francisco.

I used to love Danielle Steels books in the early days. Now they seem to be written using a formula. A fast read.

The story of three brothers who open competing restaurants and all the goings-on behind the scenes.

I really wanted to like this book. It had promise. I couldn't get into the characters and it became a bit boring. I did finish it though.

Once Upon a River
By Diane Setterfield
4 stars
This book is an old-fashioned story of living and dying, of loving and lying in which a child dies and lives again, but to what end? And for whose benefit? OUaR is a mystery, an atmospheric drama filled with suspense and loss, a love story, an historical celebration of storytelling, a nod to folklore and superstition, and quite a pleasure to read! But a word of warning: you need to pay attention! There is a lot of back and forth and speculation by the many characters that can lead you down a meandering path, and perhaps cause you to lose your momentum!

Burial Rites by Hannah Kent (4*)
This is a fictionalized account of a true story of the last person executed for murder in Iceland, in 1830. Two men are murdered in their beds and the accused killers are an adolescent neighbor boy, an adolescent girl employee, and a 33-year-old woman recently evicted from the farm. The author creates a scenario about what happened between the five of them, while staying within the limits of the historical documents. I can understand how some people might be blown away by this novel, but I wasn't one of them--too modernistic, introspective, distant, and weird for my taste.

Here we are! This is where you can list the books that you finished in August

All posts need book title, author, and stars; 0 being the worst and 6 being very special.

I would encourage you to comment on books that others have read by sending them a Sparkmail. This topic is just to list books read and finished in August 2019 for the team.

This is a thread where we list all the books that we read during the month of August and rate them by the system listed below. Please note that you need to list title, author, and your rating for it to be counted. Also, please give a description of the book and how it appealed to you. This is a great way to find new books and authors that you might be interested in. Everyone is welcome to join.

If you started a book in July (or any prior month), but finish in August, it counts for August.

DO NOT list books STARTED; only books FINISHED. Include title, author and rating.

Rereads count, audios count, electronics count. Our minimum word count is 25,000.

Book Ratings:

0 stars - Fit for only lining birdcages.
1 star - Agent was better salesman than author was writer.
2 stars - Some parts had promise.
3 stars - Solid read in its genre. Take it on plane.
4 stars - Better than average. Don't lose it on the plane.
5 stars - Recommended. One of the top 10% of books in its genre.
6 stars - Strongly recommended. Beg, Borrow, Buy, or Steal It.
