Plain Change (Plain Fame #2) by Sarah Price (4*)
Young Amish woman leaves community with the rock star who broke her leg in a car/pedestrian accident when the Bishop can no longer tolerate the disruption the unwanted attention is bringing to their community. She is due for many culture shocks as she interacts with his world and his friends. I was in the mood for a sweet Amish romance, and it did fit the bill--a fast, sweet, entertaining read. However, I am too old to even vaguely appreciate the romance with a rock star genre, and that stock plot caused a lot of eye rolling. I would have enjoyed it more if her romance with an Englischer had been with someone less cliché, but younger women might enjoy it more.

The Road Home by Rose Tremain (5*)
A young Eastern European widower, who cannot find work to support his mother and daughter moves to London to try to earn enough to send home, encounters many adjustment problems and hardships, good fortune and bad. Meanwhile his family and friends picture him living high in London and abandoning them. This was almost a really well-written book until I encountered a section that went really off-track and I couldn't imagine what happened to the author. I originally rated this book 4* but it did get back on track and I did enjoy it immensely overall and consider it a five-star book if you forgive and forget the rough patch.

A science-y, non-fiction book about evolution, consciousness and, yes, octopuses. Fascinating and informative, and a cautionary tale about the deterioration of our environment.

This was a re-read for me, for the book club I belong to IRL. I enjoyed the second reading even more than the first; the story seemed more cohesive this time around. I felt, as did everyone in my BC, that the story, though engaging, was somewhat implausible. Six years in the life of a young black slave, and so many adventures, in the 1830s?

The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters (4*)
A lonely doctor, becoming entwined in the lives of an old family in decline living in a dilapidated mansion, narrates the tale of unfortunate events that may or may not be attributed to a malevolent presence. This is a well-developed haunted house spook story which, after a slow start about the characters' mundane lives setting the stage, becomes more and more engrossing as it becomes increasingly macabre. It was entertaining but not very original, composed of elements found in many other classic horror tales. You've heard it all before but still it is prime spooky entertainment.

The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead (5*)
This is a fictional story based on a real Florida reform school with the name changed. The abuses and murders of the fictional characters happened to real boys in that real school for decades. What happens when a boy of high ideals who idolizes Martin Luther King's advocation of dignity, love, trust, and standing up to injustice now finds himself trapped in the indignity of an institution whose reality teaches that love gets you abandoned, trust gets you betrayed, and standing up gets you swatted down and beaten to death? Whitehead can really write. His well-drawn characters live, breath, and bleed and his stories could never be called formulaic. This is a short, engrossing, fast-moving novel that never let's up, although sometimes you may wish it would because it is so real and heart-breaking.

Jonathan Cahn--The Harbinger: The Ancient Mystery that Holds the Secret of America's Future (5*)
The book is fiction and, like the Left Behind series, gives a possible interpretation of Bible prophecy in a fictional tale with a modern setting. The Harbinger explores the amazing coincidences of 911 and the financial crises seven years later in fall, 2008, and how they parallel the Bible's story of the Northern Jewish kingdom of Israel as stated in the prophecies of Isaiah and Jeremiah. Did some selective fact checking and his facts proved accurate. So whether you accept his premise and conclusions or not, like Left Behind, it comes down to a matter of your personal theology, analysis, and interpretation. Personally, it made me want to humble myself, pray, seek God's face, and repent of my wicked ways.

This richly detailed tome starts out strong. For the most part, the book is engaging and does a wonderful job of educating the reader on the history of Korean/Japanese relations (cultural and political). The author does a marvellous job of creating settings and characters and providing an interesting and relatable story arc. But I felt the book was much too long, and I lost interest (and the thread of the story) in the last generational portion.
A good read that would have been even better at 400 pages...

I am not scoring this book a 4+star because I loved the story, or found it more engaging or inspiring than other books I have read, but because it presents a perspective on the contemporary indigenous experience that I have not encountered in literature before. I found it intriguing, illuminating, and a little unsettling.

At Home: A Short History of Private Life by Bill Bryson (4*)
Bryson goes through his house under the premise that everything that happened in the world ends up somewhere in our house and proceeds to write multiple mini-histories about the personal things that affect the real lives of real people. Where he stuck to this premise and made the material fun and interesting the book was wonderful, but at other spots he bogged down in some very uninteresting rambling that had little to do with the lives and preoccupations of ordinary folks. This was far from my favorite Bryson book, but it was still a very worthwhile read full of all kinds of fascinating tidbits I'd never heard or thought of before.

Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys (5*)
In 1950 New Orleans the daughter of a heartless hoe works hard to better herself, get a college education, and make a fresh start elsewhere, but her psychopath mother keeps intruding in her life to exploit her and mess up her plans. However, a crabby madam hides a heart of gold beneath her hard exterior, and often acts as the protagonist's lifeline. Great story with drama, complex relationships, atmosphere, tragedy, murder mystery, and love in its many strange and wonderful forms.

H is for Hawk by Helen Macdonald (3*)
The author, with an interest in falconry, deals with her father's death while training a goshawk and contemplating issues of life and death and our place in nature. Meanwhile she re-reads the troubled T.H. White's The Goshawk and interweaves these three themes into her story. In truth this book is objectively 5* and subjectively 1*. I could not get into it, could not concentrate on it, and was bored from beginning to end. Although it has many literary merits and lots of fans, I could dredge up no interest in falconry. Just let hawks alone to be hawks; they are real good at it.

Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy by Eric Metaxas (5*)
With the subject, Eric Bonhoeffer, being such a fascinating, brilliant, dedicated, insightful, courageous, inspiring, and sincere hero, theologian, disciple of Christ, and superlative human, how can an author not write an engrossing and enlightening biography? Just gather what is known from his works, letters, interviews with family and friends, and finally the statements of fellow prisoners about his incarceration and execution, and allow the raw material to provide an amazing story. The true story needs no further embellishment beyond his life, so well and truly lived.

Love Letters To the Dead
By Ava Dellaire
A YA novel
3 stars
I was not enchanted by this book, and yet, in my typical wish-washy fashion, I can see how some readers may be. It is a wrenching dissertation on the gut-busting loneliness of the teenage years, with a boat-load of grief and guilt tossed into the mix.
So much of what happened in the book made me angry... Jeez, the whole going to the movies thing.... where was the supervision, the preventative instruction, the observational skills of parenting? And I just wanted to smack Laurel's mother, because I don't care how awful everything is and how much better it might be for everyone else if you removed yourself from the picture, if you make the decision to have children, you had better be there for them come thick or thin. Their needs supersede yours, like it or not.
So yeah. This book ticked me off, big time.

The Cellist of Sarajevo by Steven Galloway (5*)
The story is told from multiple POV's of four characters trapped in the siege of Sarajevo in the 1990's when for four years the military in the hills surrounding the city lobbed mortar and sniper fire on civilians trying to get to work or obtain supplies. The stories revolve around a cellist playing Albinoni’s Adagio at 4:00 for 22 days in the crater of a mortar shell that killed 22 people waiting in line for bread, as a reminder that beauty can again arise out of ashes. This book is pretty great fiction, but not pleasant fiction, with compelling characters dealing with fear, the brutality, waste, and futility of war, questioning the meaning of life and death, and trying to hold onto their humanity in the most inhumane of circumstances.

Shakespeare: The World as Stage by Bill Bryson (5*)
Bryson gathers meaty info from other Shakespeare biographers, adds juicy morsels about life in Shakespearian England, and comes up with a tasty blend in a pithy biography of the Bard, often told with tongue in cheek humor so his non-fiction never becomes too dried out.

Here we are! This is where you can list the books that you finished in September

All posts need book title, author, and stars; 0 being the worst and 6 being very special.

I would encourage you to comment on books that others have read by sending them a Sparkmail. This topic is just to list books read and finished in September 2019 for the team.

This is a thread where we list all the books that we read during the month of September and rate them by the system listed below. Please note that you need to list title, author, and your rating for it to be counted. Also, please give a description of the book and how it appealed to you. This is a great way to find new books and authors that you might be interested in. Everyone is welcome to join.

If you started a book in August (or any prior month), but finish in September, it counts for September.

DO NOT list books STARTED; only books FINISHED. Include title, author and rating.

Rereads count, audios count, electronics count. Our minimum word count is 25,000.

Book Ratings:

0 stars - Fit for only lining birdcages.
1 star - Agent was better salesman than author was writer.
2 stars - Some parts had promise.
3 stars - Solid read in its genre. Take it on plane.
