This is a JUNIOR novel
Books like this are why I love junior fiction. The main character, Mai, offers us a delightful perspective, giving the reader insight and accessibility to a foreign culture. Viet Nam, itís traditions, itís food, and a bit of its history, parcelled up for us to savour and enjoy!

Good start, but it spiralled into sappy teen romance. (I am not a big fan of romance.) Lots of drama, but just not as gritty as it could have, and should have, been.

DIET IS A FOUR LETTER WORD!!!!

We are constantly creating our "karma" or destiny through our intentions, thoughts and deeds in this moment. It is achieved through countless deliberate acts of selflessness.

The Cartel-Don Winslow. 6 stars

This is my new Dan Brown, John Grisham type author. If you like them you may like the suspense and how the author weaves the storyís dark character together.

This is 2nd book in a trilogy. 1st book is Power of the Dog. (6 stars to this one too, but I do not recommend it for everyone.). Recommend reading them in order. Not for all itís a historical fiction book about the drug war and itís based on real events. Iíd really love to discuss this book with a book club. There is a lot of murder, torture, sex, etc. and readers either give it a 1 and abandon it or a 5 (out of 5 on goodreads) if they read it on good reads. It can get brutal and ugly and in real life it is all this. There is also a love story in each of the books. The events are based on real events. I stumbled across this trilogy, not my genre but is a fascinating read. One of my favorite authors ever, and I will probably read everything heís written.

This is a JUNIOR NOVEL
My experience with middle school readers (school librarian for 20 years) is that many of them absolutely love a book about issues, injustices, and survival. I think this book would appeal greatly to that kind of reader. I read a lot of junior and YA fiction and I enjoyed the book myself.

We Are All Welcome Here
By Elizabeth Berg
6 stars!
What a beautiful book! This is my first by this author, but it certainly wonít be my last. We Are All Welcome Here touched me, informed me, and and moved me to a greater understanding of many truths.
I love a book written from a childís perspective. I feel myself falling into that persona, and taking on their thoughts and feelings as my own. I have to tell you, I really connected with Diana, I felt her anger and her anguish, and her emotional growth.

A curious little book. It is a little sad, and a little odd; not at all what I expected with a Paul Jennings book. Still, I liked it, and I liked the way it ended. Not for every reader, though.

Force of Nature
By Jane Harper
3.5 stars.
I wanted to give it a 4 star rating but I just couldn't, because I didn't like it nearly as well as the other two of hers I have read.
An atmospheric mystery about 5 women on a work-related, team-building retreat in the thickly-wooded, wet and windy, snake infested, Giralang Range of Australia. They share history; they share, and hold, secrets. When one of them turns up dead, cracks turn to fissures, and all the ugliest start pouring out!

The Reckoning by John Grisham ***

Not my favorite John Grisham. Didn't care for how the plot ended. Also, there was a lot more of the Death March included in the middle of the book, which was much more than necessary. If you want to learn more about the Death March in the Phillipines in World War II, this book is for you.

A seemingly realistic account of life on the Siberian steppe some 2000 years ago. A harsh environment, and a harsh culture, and a sympathetic and flawed main character. Truly enjoyable speculation.

Here we are! This is where you can list the books that you finished in December

All posts need book title, author, and stars; 0 being the worst and 6 being very special.

I would encourage you to comment on books that others have read by sending them a Sparkmail. This topic is just to list books read and finished in December 2019 for the team.

This is a thread where we list all the books that we read during the month of December and rate them by the system listed below. Please note that you need to list title, author, and your rating for it to be counted. Also, please give a description of the book and how it appealed to you. This is a great way to find new books and authors that you might be interested in. Everyone is welcome to join.

If you started a book in November (or any prior month), but finish in December, it counts for December.

DO NOT list books STARTED; only books FINISHED. Include title, author and rating.

Rereads count, audios count, electronics count. Our minimum word count is 25,000.

Book Ratings:

0 stars - Fit for only lining birdcages.
1 star - Agent was better salesman than author was writer.
2 stars - Some parts had promise.
3 stars - Solid read in its genre. Take it on plane.
4 stars - Better than average. Don't lose it on the plane.
5 stars - Recommended. One of the top 10% of books in its genre.
6 stars - Strongly recommended. Beg, Borrow, Buy, or Steal It.
