Clever idea, to write a whole novel using nothing but the lists that this guy composes compulsively. It made for an entertaining quick read, but I felt it lacked real depth. Just too cute for its own good.

A best seller for a good reason. Growing up off the grid in rural Idaho, Tara goes to school and her eyes are opened to life off the mountain. Except she didn’t go to school until 11th grade and her 1st school wAs college. It’s a very interesting story. And it has made me think about my own life. Highly recommend.

An Ocean of Minutes
By Thea Lim

I know that a lot of my reading friends would not enjoy this book, due to its speculative nature. However, the story is unique, quite original, and vastly imaginative. At its core, a love story, but with a dystopian framework and time splits taking it in an oddly unsettling direction. The ending is infused with such loss, yet much hope. Masterful.

Set in 1960's Greenwich Village; a twenty something woman becomes the guardian of her much younger brother.

I liked this book. The story reminded me somewhat of "Mame" although the female character is much younger. I will have to check out more books from Ms. Schine.

Necessary Lies

This was an incredibly captivating read, one that I found myself thinking about even when I wasn’t actually reading it. I easily related to several of the characters, and was outraged at the callous way they were treated by “the system”, or by the way society in general had very specific expectations with regard to the behaviour of its females. The ending was almost too sunny to be realistic, and yet, I found myself quietly rejoicing in the reunion that closed the final chapter.

A Tale for the Time Being, by Ruth Ozeki *

This book has been highly praised and won awards, but I hated it. Pretentious, self-absorbed, and killingly dull. Ozecki tries to teach you about Japanese culture, oceanography, and quantum mechanics while meditating on suicide. There are clearer and more entertaining ways to learn anything. No plot, no character development, and not much in the way of prose style.

I'm debating whether to return it to the bookstore or shred it to relieve my feelings.

Echoes in Death by J. D. Robb ****

I read J.D. Robb based on a recommendation from this forum and I'm very glad I did. This book is one in a series of futuristic mysteries (set around 2060). I liked it enough to get the first three books and I plan on reading the whole series.

This book is a page-turner that kept me guessing right up to the end.

It was a great pleasure to accompany King's Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes on another adventure - this time to Venice. Well written, well plotted, and well researched. A very satisfying continutation of a delightful series.

If you are a mystery fan and haven't yet tried this series, by all means do so; but start at the beginning of the series with The Beekeeper's Apprentice.

The writing isn’t stellar, but the premise is intriguing. A cautionary tale for women - I cannot imagine that men would read this book and take it in the least way seriously. Women have long been muzzled, as women everywhere know. In this novel, the “bracelets“ give a concrete device to legitimize the silencing and further limit a woman’s freedom. Brainwashing becomes the norm. It is not really so far a cry from our current truth.

The blurb on the cover of this book describes this as a tale that “sneaks up on you”, and indeed it does. You think you are reading a quaint story about a young man and his cat, and then suddenly it becomes so very much more. I am not a cat person, but somehow Nana becomes the exact perfect voice to impart this narrative.

A biography of the American Flag. Interesting reading. A lot of things were mentioned that I didn't know or learned in school and had forgotten. It also seems that Betsy Ross may not have been the one to sew the first flag. Apparently, there is little to no evidence of it.

The Home For Unwanted Girls
By Joanna Goodman
4 stars
Reading this book was an interesting peek into the not-so-long-ago (mid-fifties-early 70s) social history of Canada. Quebec’s quest for separation, the FLQ, women’s’ restricted place in society, and most central to the story, the plight of unwed mothers and motherless children. The role of the Catholic Church is cast in a very bleak light, and one cannot help but feel anguish and anger on behalf of the book’s characters. A very engaging book.

The first half of this book had me feeling fearful and unprepared for the years to come, but I decided to keep with it. I am glad I did, because the last 100 pages brought forward many of the beautiful aspects of aging. I learned a few things about myself, mostly nothing too pretty; whether I look forward to it or not, I am now on the doorstep of old age, and I will face it with whatever courage and joy I can muster!

White Christmas Wedding by Celeste Winters. I give it 5 stars. It is the first book I have read by this author and really enjoyed it.

First time wedding planner Jen plans her friend's barn wedding and it seems everything that could go wrong does but it ends well.

Bald, Jillian - The House of Baric Part One : Shields Down
4 stars

A historic fiction depicting the arranged marriage of a Croatian Baron to a Greek maiden. It was a good book, though long winded. I enjoyed it, but not enough to jump to reading it's sequel just yet.

Happy New Year everyone! Let's start reading!!

DIET IS A FOUR LETTER WORD!!!!

We are constantly creating our "karma" or destiny through our intentions, thoughts and deeds in this moment. It is achieved through countless deliberate acts of selflessness.

It's hard to be happy with others if we are not happy with ourselves.

Just keep on moving and you'll get there.

If you ever want to feel good about yourself, go out and help someone else!

Here we are! This is where you can list the books that you finished in January

All posts need book title, author, and stars; 0 being the worst and 6 being very special.

I would encourage you to comment on books that others have read by sending them a Sparkmail. This topic is just to list books read and finished in January 2020 for the team.

This is a thread where we list all the books that we read during the month of January and rate them by the system listed below. Please note that you need to list title, author, and your rating for it to be counted. Also, please give a description of the book and how it appealed to you. This is a great way to find new books and authors that you might be interested in. Everyone is welcome to join.

If you started a book in December (or any prior month), but finish in January, it counts for January.

DO NOT list books STARTED; only books FINISHED. Include title, author and rating.

Rereads count, audios count, electronics count. Our minimum word count is 25,000.

Book Ratings:

0 stars - Fit for only lining birdcages.
1 star - Agent was better salesman than author was writer.
2 stars - Some parts had promise.
3 stars - Solid read in its genre. Take it on plane.
4 stars - Better than average. Don't lose it on the plane.
5 stars - Recommended. One of the top 10% of books in its genre.
6 stars - Strongly recommended. Beg, Borrow, Buy, or Steal It.
