I use garlic in almost everything and have not been bothered by vampires in years. Black pepper, parsley, basil are standard for me also.

I use a lot of herbs--probably basil is my favorite. As far as "Healthy Spices" I guess I would say cinnamon and fresh ginger.

I love ginger... and it's supposed to increase your metabolism a little bit. Hey, over the long run, every little bit adds up I guess.

I too grow an herb garden with cilantro, basil, thyme and marjoram to name a few. I love adding fresh, crushed mint leaves with lemon to my water.

Most herbs are super easy to grow, even in pots on the windowsill (no garden required!). We use lots of fresh chives, sage, basil, oregano, dill and thyme from our balcony garden!

One of my favorite Spice Medleys to use is Spike. You can find it at Whole Foods or probably any health food store. It's really yummy and bring a great flavor to everything from meats, veggies, pasta, etc. I love to mix it with pepper, cayenne, fresh garlic and fresh hebs.

Mmmm, making myself hungry emoticon

Things I tell myself:

I love you exactly as you are now - No matter how much you weigh or how you look. You are becoming fit and healthy!

You are my best friend. I love you and am here for you.

You lose weight easily!

Things I ask myself:

Will this bring you closer to or farther away from your goals?

How will you feel about this in 5 years?

Is this action coming out of love?

I use a lot of basil, but that is an herb rather than a spice. Probably the spice I use a lot (but just a pinch in most dishes) is nutmeg. It seems to bring out the flavor more than if I didn't use it.

Heh. Make friends with an Indian who cooks. We use SO many spices (both whole and ground, separately and in blends) that you could go weeks without having 2 meals taste similar (if you choose to!)

My go-to, make-it-tasty-in-a-hurry choices:
- powdered cumin
- powdered coriander
- cayenne or other hot pepper
- black pepper
- allspice (this one *alone* will add rich, intense flavour to meats and sauces)
- powdered turmeric

Tomatoes (really!), onions, garlic and ginger are almost a given in my home for flavour, too. And, of course, hot chili peppers. :D

Basically, I'd say, experiment. Look up a few recipes on the web for dishes you've tried and liked, buy a small pack/bottle of the spice, see if you like it in other dishes, too. If so, maybe you want to add it to your cabinet. If not, move on. :)

I've also been using sea salt instead of normal, iodized salt - just a *few* grains makes all the difference to the flavour of a dish or salad, I'm finding.

Cheers,
Maya

Here's a quick and easy recipe that uses several of those good cancer-preventing spices:

Shabbat Chicken
4 boneless chicken breasts
1 onion
1 tablespoon minced GARLIC
1 teaspoon CINNAMON
1 teaspoon GINGER
1 teaspoon TURMERIC
olive oil 1 - 3 tbsp. (as needed)

There are two ways I do this. One is you can saute the chicken breasts, or two, you can bake them. I prefer baking them for the fat savings (don't have to use as much olive oil) but sauteing gives a bit of crust to the chicken if that is what you like.

Slice onion thin and keep the onion rings whole as much as possible. Heat oil in saute pan and add onions, let cook until soft, then add spices. You will probably need to add a little more olive oil to keep the spices from sticking and burning. Can also add a couple tbsp. water during cooking to keep mixture soft. Lower heat, add garlic and mix well. Here's where you change it based on bake or saute-

For saute, add chicken breasts directly on top of onion mixture, cook for about 5 minutes, turn on other side, when that side is browned, mix onion mixture all around, add a bit of olive oil to keep from sticking. When chicken breasts are cooked through and no longer pink, you are done. Serve chicken breast with a dollop of the by now very soft onion mixture.

For baking, put chicken breasts in Pam sprayed baking casserole dish, pour onion mixture over top and mix. Bake at 350 degrees for approx. 20 - 40 min. depending on how thick your chicken breasts are. Cook until no longer pink and juices run clear.

This has a wonderful middle eastern flavor to it, you get a big dose of all those healthy spices. Be careful with turmeric if you have not worked with it before (deep yellow) it will stain. Is especially yummy with a rice dish ( brown rice pilaf is excellent)and steamed veggies of your choice. Very healthy, easy and yummy. Hope you try it!

I like tarragon too! I'm big on using fresh herbs too when they are available. I have a fairly large garden of herbs. You can also use some edible flowers in salads.

Great info to share folks.

emoticon Friends!

Just did a paper which included this information!

emoticon Garlic. (Research has shown that it can help reduce the risk of heart disease by decreasing blood cholesterol. That helps prevents clogged arteries and lowers blood pressure!)

emoticon Rosemary. (Often used to liven up sauces and chicken dishes, rosemary may be good for eye health)

emoticon Oregano. (Has the highest antioxidant level of the 39 different types of spices!)

emoticon Sage. (may give your memory a boost)

emoticon Thyme. (It may help get coughing spells under control)

emoticon Ginger. (Fights nausea and motion sickness. I chew on ginger when getting a migraine during time I am doing a body cleanse and am trying not to take medicine! It also may be good for joints)

emoticon Turmeric. (It has been shown to slow the spread of cancer cells, specifically prostate cancer)

emoticon Other spices with medicinal purposes include cinnamon! (great in smoothies), which can help lower your cholesterol and blood sugar. Fennel can prevent gas, heartburn, and upset stomach.

emoticon Some spices increase metabolism and decrease sugar cravings. Cayenne pepper, ginger, and mustard increase the metabolism; less than 1 teaspoon of dry mustard can increase the metabolism 25% for up to 3 hours. Bay leaf, cinnamon, and clove decrease sugar cravings and help control blood glucose levels.

Anti-Aging Properties:
Cloves (ground)
Cinnamon (ground)
Jamaican allspice (ground)
Apple pie spice (mixture)
Oregano (ground)
Pumpkin pie spice (mixture)
Marjoram
Sage
Thyme
Gourmet Italian spice

Yes those are good spices. Any of them with no/low sodium are good. One great line of tasty spices is Mrs. Dash. There are several varieties and they are all sodium free.
