The behavior modification works. The only time my blood sugar has been over 150 in the past 2 months was when I ate ice cream. Knowing that doing that is killing off my beta cells causes me to think long and hard about how bad I want to eat something that is, basically, poisonous to my system.

Low carb. High fat. Butter everything!

IAMPUF5511,

On getting better blood sugar, by "behaviour modification....

First of all, carbs and blood sugar ups and downs, and quite frankly carb addiction are not poor willpower, or bad behaviour, they are inbred behaviour to fatten us up for winter. So if you feel like you are weak willed, well don't.

To get better blood sugar, and be less and less addicted to carbs, lets consider dropping high carb things first.
- sugar
- rice
- potatoes in any form
- pasta
- wheat, grains, bread
- breakfast cereal

OK, what to eat for breakfast? Eggs, any style, bacon, cheese, NO TOAST, NO JAM

If you reply here, I'll be here for you. I check in every day. It is rare that I miss a day.

Katharine,

Yup, carbs carbs carbs. The coffee-mate nutrition label says a 2.0 gram serving has 1.0 grams of carbs, so 50% of its weight is carbs.

Pure sugar is 100% and I avoid that like the plague. So I avoid coffee-mate too.

Do you have a COSTCO membership? Where I live they sell a chocolate drink in tetra packs and I think it is called "pure protein". It tastes pretty good and has virtually zero carbs, like maybe one gram in a single drink box.

I want to recommend a book: What Do I Eat Now?: A Step-by-Step Guide to Eating Right with Type 2 Diabetes (Authors: M.S. Patti Geil, Tami A. Ross R.D. )

The symptoms of diabetes are being thirsty, having to urinate often and also being hungry. If a person has diabetes, it helps to eat non-starchy vegetables, fish and healthy fats, as strontium iodide shows the reference. www.alfa-chemistry.com/cas_10476-86-

Fiber is critical for diabetes because fiber helps lower the blood sugar response so the body won't need as much insulin. So that's big here.

For type-2 diabetics eating "right" is huge. But what is "right"?

Food choices are huge. My advice is to read labels and always make lower carbohydrate choices. All carbs will raise blood sugar. Insulin will try to lower it, but sometimes not enough. So avoid high blood sugar in the first place.

I read all labels when shopping, I divide the amount of carbs in a serving by the portion size to calculate the percentage of weight that is carbs.

Fibre is technically a carbohydrate, few animals can digest it. Termites can, which is why they can eat wood, for humans though, we can't. For the above scientific reasons they are listed as a subcategory on nutrition labels, but subtract them out from total carbs to get the digestible, or net carb count.

Here is a label:

So 28 grams of this has 6 grams of carbs, so about 21% of its weight. But when you forget the 4 grams of fibre, 6-4 is 2 grams of net, or digestible carbs. One of those 2 is sugar, the other is something else. Labels don't always give a full breakdown of the total carbs.

But 2 of 28 is 7% of the weight as net carbs, which happens to be my personal cutoff. Above 7% and I don't eat it, and hopefully not buy it.

FIDDLER4JESUS,

Ahh, words like "giving up" or "can't eat". I say "chose not to eat".

So now you choose not to eat chips. Oh yes. But cheese. In my mind cheese is fine. Yes it is high calorie, but cheese has very little impact on blood sugar because it is pretty low in carbs.

Yes one might want to loose weight, but blood sugar control is primary in my mind, and weight loss secondary. Both are more easily achieved by avoiding carbs.

Sorry James, I did not know about your reply. I just happened to get on this particular part of discussions. So far, I have been reading good each morning and afternoon also. Usually in the a.m. it reads about 115 and afternoon it is less than 100 or a bit higher. I do not have to take the needle. Thank you for letting me know about the green pepper. I love all colors of peppers.I make a good stir fry with coconut oil using them along with a sweet pepper, which is excellent for diabetics. I am making a soup today with a small amount of white navy beans, chicken and red pepper. This recipe is in a diabetic book., which I refer to a lot.
One thing that has been hard to give up is chips along with cheese. I have been careful however about the amount I eat, as it is too hard giving up what you like the most. Quantity is all I think when I reach for that bag! and usually low salt ones.
The last visit to my doctor, he was very pleased with the blood work taken. I am on cholesterol pills also. He said I was on the right course & I did find a diabetic diet outline to go by. I do not like anything with Splenda! I use Stevia, a natural substitute for baking, etc.Plus learning to eat much better. Are you a Christian? I know the Lord has helped me very often. Thank you for all your ideas and support.

FIDDLER4JESUS,

High blood sugar causes various problems in one's body and should be avoided. Insulin is the body's emergency response to lower blood sugar by getting the excess blood sugar into the cells.

Suppose your children frequently play with matches and start your house on fire pretty often, but you think that is OK because the firefighters always put out the fire. That is how I think of insulin. Yes you need it. But wouldn't it be better to not let those matches into the house in the first place?

Metformin makes the body's existing insulin more effective. Like making those firefighters quicker or more efficient. Yes it works, but ....

If you want to learn how to eat "right", then think about nutrition, that is what you need. Also avoid nutritionally empty foods, ones that have calories, but nothing that the body needs to rebuild or repair or maintain itself.

Sugar has calories, but zero nutrients, no vitamins, no minerals, no protein, no fats, just pure energy. So this is the worst thing for a type-2 diabetic. The best thing is at the opposite end, the most nutrition, but at the least calorie cost. My favourite example is vitamin C. Does that make you think of oranges? Well yes, but oranges have so much sugar. The solution is to eat green peppers. About 2/3 of a green pepper provides your daily vitamin C needs, but that pepper packs 4 times the vitamin C per calorie compared to an orange.

Lots more ideas from me if you stick around.

Hi everyone! I am new to this team and I am sure you will give support. I have been recently diagnosed with diabetes My brother has it too, and he takes twice the amount of Metforman than me..My father had it bad, so, you might say, it is in our genes. I want to learn how to eat right and learn about carbs. My doctor gave me no set of rules to go by or diet. But, I do have quite a few diabetic cookbooks. Thank God!
This should be fun,,,getting to know different people who have this same diagnosis.

If I had 3 meals with 40 grams each, plus two snacks of 15 each, that would be 160 grams a day. The North American average is 330, that is half the average. This would be better for myself than eating the average, but not good enough.

I know from experience that my body can't manage 90 a day, not without medication. I know that at 30 to 50, that my blood sugar is under control.

Men can eat 45 to 60 carbs per meal. Women can eat 30 to 45. Snacks for both sexes are 15 carbs. You should always eat some protein whenever you eats carbs.

TOUDLES,

absolutely, count carbs. Net carbs are the digestible ones (not fibre) so you subtract the fibre count out of the total. I typically calculate the percentage of the weight of food that is net carbs, then when I weigh the quantity I eat, I easily calculate grams of carbs.

First of all, carbs raise blood sugar, so how do you want deal with that? Take medication to lower blood sugar, or take medication and eat fewer carbs, or just eat fewer carbs?

I'm sure that you want to know how many grams of carbs you need to eat per day to be healthy. From all that I know the answer is zero. If you look across Wikipeda, on protein, amino acids, essential fatty acids, carbohydrates ... etc. etc. you see over and over that carbohydrates are not "essential". Here is such a page:
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nutrient#/se
ar
ch

On that page it says:
-----
There are no "essential carbohydrates", animals can synthesize all the types of carbohydrates needed for growth.
-----

So how low you want to go is up to you. Of course at zero carbs there is virtually nothing you can eat, as you cut out virtually everything. My personal daily target is 30 grams of net carbs, 50 on a high day.

I'm always lurking around this team, I check it every day or two, so if you want to talk more, I'm here for you.

Help! I am newly diagnosed Type II, and every one says I need to count carbs, but no one tells me how many carbs I should have.

I asked my Dr. about counting carbs and he gave me a hand out about carb 'choices' and carb servings, which didn't really make sense because it still didn't tell me how much I could have per meal (per day?). Then a friend told me the hand out goes with a diabetic exchange diet, which I know nothing about.

Anyway, I can read nutrition labels, I can add, and know a little about Net Carbs. What I need to know is How much!?

OK so it varies per individual..I get that, so where do I plug in age, weight, gender etc. And get an answer.

Robert,

There are actually four sources of calories:
Carbohydrates (4 calories per gram)
Protein (4 calories per gram)
Dietary Fat (9 calories per gram)
Alcohol (7 calories per gram)

Carbs impact blood sugar the most. Excess protein can impact blood sugar (more than about 100 grams a day). Dietary fat and pure alcohol don't, but alcoholic drinks might have extra carbs or sugar.

In any case, if you eat cheese for example, with lots of fat in cheese, it is very easy to get enough calories each day, even with virtually no carbs.

Yes, congratulations! I find that if I eat right, my sugar levels are normal, if I eat poorly, my levels are out of whack - it's that simple. But the hardest part is getting enough calories while limiting my carboydrates. I have not yet learned this art.

I finally bought a kitchen scale and leave it on the dining room table. It helps. I'm glad I did it.

A change in diet, eating "healthier" things with more nutrition and fewer calories makes a big difference, both in weight, and in health, and as you wrote "I feel so much better".
