Yes, we used to breed Paint horses, so had to have a few mares, and then of course we always had young horses around. No more, all have gone on to new, good homes. emoticon

Well, I can understand that........ Thankfully, my husband had a few horses when I met him (more than I did) so he is OK with them, though he does like it now that we are down to just 2 from 10 or 12!

Hey Blue Kitty! Do you own any horses? Just curious! I do ride now and then, though life and work get in the way. We just have the two Paint Horses left, though horses are still my passion!

Haven't been on a horse for about 35 years. Fat old women don't ride. We drive Tahoes'.

Hi, FancyFree 15! Thanks for the compliments on Lexi, she is one that we bred and raised right here. She is by our stallion and out of my favorite mare. She was our first foal born here by our stallion, so is special that way.
Yes, we can't get any grass hay, we usually feed grass hay and alfalfa pellets in their feed. Now, we are feeding alfalfa hay in small amounts, still feeding the alfalfa pellets and their grain. I have increased their grain a bit because they have less hay, but it takes so much less alfalfa to satisfy their nutritional needs, they are not losing any weight.

You are fortunate to have the hay up there. We have had some rain this fall, thank goodness, so we are getting some fall grass. My husband planted some rye grass for good winter grazing in some of our smaller pastures, so we will have that ready for them in a bit. Right now, they are only getting what we are feeding them........I feel bad because they have nothing to browse on, but can't be helped right now.

You are fortunate to still have the grass in the meadow! emoticon

I'm so glad to hear from you! Your horse is so pretty! It's hard to imagine that she's only 2 yrs. old! Have you had any problems getting hay for your horse? I keep hearing about the drought down there... We just bought about 350 small square bales to start the steer calves off with and for the horses this winter. They're still eating the grass in the meadow.

Fancyfree15, I tried to answer you twice this morning, had my replies typed all out, and hit the post message, and the site lost them both! So, here we go for one final try...........

It sounds as if you have your hands full with those two! The gelding especially, took nerve for you to accept, especially after he proved too much for the bull riders and the Montana Cowboys! I know that I wouldn't have taken him on, Kudos to you for getting him ride-able finally.
I am riding a 2 yr. old filly right now, taking lessons on her with the trainer who trained her this spring. I really love her, she is so quiet and laid back, not too much excites her or frightens her. She is having tooth problems right now, losing a baby tooth. It was loose today and bleeding, so I didn't put a bit in her mouth, rode her with the bosal.

Good luck with your two horses, good to hear from you! emoticon

I have two sorrel Quarterhorses. Sara is my 11 yr. old mare. She's tall, long legs, a long neck, and a pretty little head. She's a sweetheart but very "alert". She can be a spaz.
Dexter is my 10 yr. old gelding. He was a 3 yr. old stallion when I got him from a neighbor. He'd been running alone in a meadow and had never been worked with. He was a challenge! I tried to have someone with experience train him. But a bullrider and several Montana cowboys couldn't stay on him long enough to "break" him. So I brought him home. A friend and I worked with him over last winter and he was broke to ride by spring. He's wonderful! Very intelligent, calm, and has a very smooth gait. But he still needs a lot more saddle time before I'd trust him to anyone else. He has a mind of his own at times. I know he could still buck me off if he really wanted to. Thankfully, he hasn't!

I just found this topic...........I am riding a 2 yr. old filly by our stallion, and out of one of our mares. She was just started in the spring for 60 days by a nearby trainer, who uses natural horsemanship methods. I am taking lessons there now, 2 days a week, to learn how to ride her. It is a process, but she does well, is very laid back and calm, never gets nervous over anything. She is the horse I am riding in my profile picture.

I have been riding since I was 10 years old, western style. Was born and raised in Michigan and moved to Texas in 1981, been here ever since. Sure don't miss the snow!
