Turmeric

I use Turmeric on everything. I haven't noticed much of a taste in it but my massage therapist had cancer and while he was in treatment in Europe his doctor told him that he should be using it because it helps increase the blood flow and clean your blood of toxins and stuff. So I have been using it on a LOT of things ever since.

There is a SUPER SP recipe for "Oatmeal Bake" that calls for ground cloves. Wasn't sure what that would be like, but I tried it. WOW! It's great! The trick is to use just a little bit so that it's not overpowering.

Cilantro - not really a spice...but can add wonderful flavor. I make a modified version of sour cream turkey enchiladas with fresh cilantro. Boy, are they good!

I feel like the question lately is what don't I use? Since the basil is out in force around here, I've been using a lot of fresh basil. Cumin and cayenne are staples also.

"Healthy" depends on what you want to address. If you study essential oils or anything on herbs, you will give you an idea of what herbs are good for what purpose. All of them have a benefit of some sort or another. I prefer PURE essential oils (like those found at www.forevergreenhealth.com or fresh herbs. Anything dried or powders just doesnt have the same effect. Once you drain the life blood (oils) from herbs or let it dry out, you've lost the most potent part of the plant.

Hope that helps

I use a ton of them, all fresh! When I learned that cinnamon can help with blood pressure and diabetes, it became an important part of breakfast every day, and whenever it's appropriate. I grind fresh pepper on almost everything, In addition to the spices, I tend to put a lot of Tabasco sauce on most things. I like it so much, I carry miniature bottles of it with me all the time.

I am a huge fan of Spike, a blend of 39 (!) ingredients. It comes in no-salt and vegetarian versions, as well as the original:

Just finished an egg sandwich that I goosed with Spike and a tiny bit of light mayo. Yum!

I use a ton of freshly ground black pepper.

We just about can't live without Basil. We buy one plant in the beginning of the spring, and plant it in the garden. Then I take cuttings and keep them in water in the kitchen. They root, and thrive, and we can pick the leaves daily. If they get down to bitty leaves, we plant them in the garden and take a new cutting. At the end of the season, we have a multitude of healthy plants to harvest and dry.

Fresh Basil leaves are marvelous in everything from salads to fish, with Italian dishes in between.

I think most spices are healthy, with the exception of blends that are high in sodium. Some of my favorites are ginger, turmeric, and garlic, which I know have great health benefits. I'm guessing the category "healthy spices" is also meant to include herbs. I've got several types of basil, thyme, oregano, Italian parsley, rosemary, dill, sage, and chives in my garden. So easy to grow and low maintenance, and I use them daily.
