Different Ages, Same Problem (chapter 3)

I identify with her sneaking food as a child, I wish I found the program as early as she did.

I work this program differently and believe that as long as your willing to be honest and try, I don't give up or fire sponsees. A lot of what I do I get from the OA speaker app, meeting and 12 step study group.

Like her this program has gotten me through a lot in the last almost 2 years. I pray to neve lose this program.

OA Then and Now (chapter 2)

I wish I found this program earlier in my life and recovered. I wonder how different my life would have been. On the flip side I know that I went through the experiences I did so I can be where I am now.

Like this person I have been able to go on vacation and remain sober and get along with my mom. This is by the grace of my HP and program.

I also identify with hos approach to the program. Not being able to attend lots of meeting or give service. I do my best, one of my service is to be active in the OA Spark community so when people find this page they know they are not alone.

I find hope in his view that as long as he stays in OA life is manageable and that happiness is a choice.

I will be forever grateful to Rozanne for all her work to found, launch and manage OA in its early days. Also, the prayer: "I put my hand in yours". A simple prayer, we say at every OA meeting, that has set the tone for the whole thing. No wonder I have almost always had positive, loving encounters with people in OA. Truly, it is a special community. I have found nothing like it anywhere else, not in churches, not in workplaces (and I work in mental health), not in other kinds of support groups, nowhere else. Sure, there have been a few unloving encounters and one OA group I experienced that had gotten pretty unhealthy through ignoring the traditions. but after almost 30 years, I realize the love and acceptance I have consistently found in OA has shaped my view of humanity. Nothing less than that. Wow. People wonder how I can see people as mostly good, and enter into interactions with them only expecting positive (virtually always getting positives)...I'd have to say OA has had a lot to do with that. Also, I've been fortunate enough to work with other caregivers over the years. Maybe my HP knew that I needed that to overcome the extreme shyness and self protection I had coming out of my childhood.

Waving to Rozanne in the great beyond, sending her a hug!

Becca

1. Keep Coming Back: Rozanne's Story

I'm very grateful for Rozanne's ability to see beyond the concrete addiction of gambling and realize her own addictive behavior was no different. I'm grateful she never gave up!

She talks about her "self-will run riot" after re-writing the 12 steps. I relate to this as I have a tendency to want to take charge and do it my way. Although I do flex how things are done, I keep to the intent always.

Rozanne story is truly a lesson in persisting through adversity. It gives hope that it can be done no matter what, keep coming and trying.

Our invitation to you

This is an important welcome and inftroduction to the program. It is read at the beginning of many meeting, I think for good reason, it says some basic imperative concepts.

It provides Hope, without which why would anyone try-- especially after so many attempts before. I know I would not have if there wasn't hope for myself by seeing other people's recovery.

It tells us that it is patterned after AA -- we all know AA has worked for millions of people, why not us? For myself when I first came into the rooms, it was knowing that it worked for so many people that I knew that it would work for me if I was willing to follow the program of recovery.

It told me that I'm not a failure or lack self-will this is a addictive disease. Something that I can't control on my own. It is beyond me, while reminding me the hope that I can be cured.

I find with some people they forget that food plans are very personal, what works for one person may not work for another. I have struggled with finding a sponsor mainly due to their restrictive food plans that they require I follow, this is not a diet club/program. This is a way of living. It's so important to find what works for each of us no matter how different it looks.

The 12 steps are overwhelming when I first read them, but I kept reminding myself that I'm not there yet, focus on the one I'm working on, not the next one. I have a huge tendency to borrow trouble from tomorrow- this approach helped me to not borrow trouble, but remain focused.

I'm unique in my approach to most things, OA for me is no different. I do not approach this program as one day at a time- I view it as this is my life, I simply no longer eat my binge foods, smoke or drink alcohol. Tomorrow is not an option for me- in my mind tmr comes when it comes to food. I made peace with this, as my dad said when he quit drinking 'It was fun, but I hit the limit I'm allowed in this life". It works for me.

What do you all think? What is your approach? What hope do you find in the invitation?

Hi

Iím thinking of starting on Sunday. The discussion for the week, so everyone has time to read, write, discuss.

Three book can be purchased at OA.org, amazon (all money goes to OA they do not take a percentage).

Iím so excited to start hearing what you all think. No pressure this is for all of us to to have a online meeting. If you canít comment one week, thatís ok.
