My goals for 2010:

1: Healthy eating - I'm going to try a 21 day vegan diet. I'm already a vegetarian, but I rely a lot on cheese for protein and that's really putting too much fat into my diet. So I decided that going vegan for a few weeks will get me into the habit of cooking with more beans/nuts/legumes for protein instead.
emoticon

2: fitness goals - I'm going to be joining a gym before the year's out so I can get enough aerobic exercise during the cold winter BRRRrrrr...
emoticon

3: art goals - I want to improve my art skills, so I'm going to be doing a lot more drawing, and learning some new computer software (sketchup, dreamweaver, flash).
emoticon

My goals for the month of January are:

1. Nutrition: Vegan diet for first 21 days

2. Fitness: 6 days of aerobics/week at the gym, alternating walk/run with cycling

3. Art: Minimum 20 hours of drawing; minimum 20 hours of new computer software.

I haven't been doing much walking lately. I have actually been re-focusing my exercising on training for a "century" (116 miles actual) bike ride around next Spring/Summer. I have been practicing in the stationary cycle under the "strength-endurance" level. I figure if I get through that, then when it comes time for that century ride, I'll be up to the challenge.

I forgot to list my goals for December. They will be the same as last month, even though I failed miserably at keeping them last month! I will try to do better this month

3) 9 cups of water a day.
4) Eat 5 Fruits/Veggies a day.
5) Stay within my calorie range daily.
6) Strength Training 3 Xs a week. (Mon, Wed & Fri)

I was laid up last Thursday and Friday with a migraine and did nothing, then Saturday I just caught up on house cleaning, laundry and some decorating. Got back into it a bit yesterday with a Leslie dvd and a bit of snow shoeing.

Springtime, I know it just about killed me yesterday, lol. We had so much snow the last few days, and it was really deep, I went 1/2 mile and it took me almost 3 times as long as if I was walking it, and my legs are tired today. It's definitely hard work.

Shapechanger:
I imagine that snoe shoeing takes more energy and burns more calories per hour than regular walking so you might not need to go as far to get the same aerobic and calorie burning benefit.

Oops, I never did post a goal here for December, I did it in my blog and in another thread. My goal was going to be 100 miles, just like November, since I went over in November by about 40 miles. However, we are getting tons of snow already, and my main "walking" is shoveling and snow shoeing. Shoveling isn't exactly walking in a straight line, and snow shoeing is much harder than regular walking, so it takes me longer and I don't go as far. I'll keep my goal of 100 miles, in case the snow lets up and I have time to do more Leslie dvds, but I won't be surprised if I fall below my goal. I'm still getting good exercise though!

My goal for the rest of December is to concentrate on my upper body and core strength (still waiting for the calf to heal up, boy this takes a long time).

I'll alternate between the two with one day off per week.

Goal 1: find some new upper body weight training exercises to keep things exciting.

Goal 2: Start my abs routines.

My Goals for November and actual results

Miles walked 219.6 (7.1) actual 218.8 (7.3)
Minutes 5518 (178) actual 5501 (183)
Steps 579,744 (18,701) Actual 577,632 (19,254)
calories burned 19,984 Actual 21,036

My goals for December are to exceed the November figures.
I am going to tai-Chi 3 days a week
Goal to swim at least 1 day a week for 30 minutes

As you can see, I did not exceed the October figures, Then I realized that October had 31 days and November has 30 days. So I averaged out each category based on a per day figure and found that I actually did increase on each. So I need to keep in mind that in December I will exceed the November totals but will need to look at the averages.
I haven’t started swimming, it seems with everything else haven’t found time, So I will need to find some time each week

My leg is feeling better so I'm getting back into walking this week. I want to start slow to make sure I don't get re-injured, so my goal for this week is just to do my 4 miles at just a walking pace, hopefully by the third day out I can make it a brisk walk. If all goes well, I'll get some running back in during the second week.

I only have 2 days left in Nov. so don’t think I can make my goal of 100 miles. November went by faster than realized, or I would have pursued my goal at least. I’ll re-group and pursue the 100 miles for December.

11/29 – 68 min. walk (3.9 miles); C/B: 397
11/30 – 47 min. walk (2.6 miles); C/B: 274
Beginning Dec. Goal:
12/01 - 45 min. walk (2.6 miles--same walk as yesterday but walked faster); C/B: 263
12/02 -

12/04 - 64 min. walk (3.6 miles); C/B: 374

My goal for November is to walk 100 miles. As of 11/14, I had covered 65.52 miles.

The Virtual Walk/Run website would have you believe that the state of Virginia is very big. I can't believe I am still in it, although I have passed Roanoke and Radford.

I had quite a set back last week. I'm a bit disgusted but not discouraged, so it's back to square one with me. I've recalculated my caloric need with SP and my typical exercise for the week. Their figure puts me at a 1,680 - 2,030 range with allowance for 1,780 calorie burn (C/B).

11/8 - 66 min. (4.1 miles) walk; C/B: 384
11/9 - 40 min. (2.6 miles) walk; C/B: 263
11/10 - Tried a new challenge; walked to my work 100 min. 5.2 miles; C/B: 495
11/11 - 80 min. (4 miles) walk; C/B: 396
11/12 - 89 mn. (4.8 miles) on two separate walks; Total C/B: 477
11/13 - 112 min. (5.9 miles total) on three separate walks; total C/B: 555
11/14 – 68 min. (3.5 miles) walk; C/B: 337

Total min. for Nov. (to date): 972
Total Miles Walked for November so far: 43.3
Total C/B for this month: 3,704

Total Miles Walked for October: 92.5
Total C/B for this month: 11,891
Going over my miles goal by 12 miles; my first goal was for October was 75 miles.
Based on the above information, I figure that if I continue walking 3.5 miles/day; I could reach 105 miles by the end of November. Seeing that there may be days I miss and will resort to the treadmill, I’ll scale it back to an even 100 miles for November

It takes a bit to get used to, but once you do it is a breze. Have you watched the videos for fitness tracking- they really helped me get started. Please don't go this alone, just sparkmail me and I will walk you through.

Nancylee,

Thank you for answering my question. I know there are many people on SP, but still, I figured that there was someone out there who would try to help.

I have tinkered with the fitness page here and there. I guess I just need to spend a week or so using it every day -- for as long as it takes every day -- in order to find out what I can do with it.

For awhile I was entering details about my workouts every day ... instead of using the favorites file to just check them off. It was discouraging to spend so much time reentering the same things over and over.

I thought I could find a way to track my steps every day.

You have been so helpful; God bless you!

emoticon MISSPATTYM,

Since the group is so large, everyone is setting individual goals monthly. You can post your goals at anytime here and discuss.

Have you set up your fitness tracker - you can keep track there. Go to my tools at top of page and then my fitness, you will see a little box for adding tracking steps.

Also we are using the walk across America virtual site to keep us motivated. Here is the link exercise.lbl.gov/index.html

Keep posting and participate in the weekly challenges to gain support and encouragement. This team has an excellant group of people from all stages of walking and running.

We look forward to hearing more from you.

Where can I keep record of the steps I take a day? Monday I did 7,475; Tuesday 10,598; and today (so far) is 9, 077. If I can keep record, then perhaps I will be faithful.

Is there a 10,000+ steps in this challenge?

Recap of October: my mileage goal was 88 miles, I went over that by 36. I had a goal to do more jogging, which I didn't really live up to. However, on the days I did jog, I increased my time up to 15 minutes at a shot.

For November, my goal is 100 miles. I will also be more consistent about strength training 3 times/week.

Total Miles Walked for October: 87.3
Total C/B for this month: 11,396
Going over my miles goal by 12 miles; my first goal was for October was 75 miles.
Based on the above information, I figure that if I continue walking 3.5 miles/day; I could reach 105 miles by the end of November. Seeing that there may be days I miss and will resort to the treadmill, I’ll scale it back to an even 100 miles for November.

11/1 – 64 min. (3.5 miles); C/B: 374
11/2 – 77 Min. (4 miles); C/B: 414. Went on another 47 min.(2.6 mile) walk on dinner break @ work (instead of eating), C/B is 274
11/3 – Two separate walks: a 66 min. (3.6 miles) & a 47 min.(2.6 miles)walk. Total C/B: 565
11/4 – 46 min. (2.5 miles) walk; C/B: 269
11/5 –
11/6 –
11/7 – 70 min. (3.6 miles) walking C/B: 347

Total min. for Nov. (to date): 417
Total Miles Walked for November so far: 22.4
Total C/B for this month: 2,243

My goal for October was 60 miles, and I was sick and unable to walk the first 10 days, so I am pretty please that I managed 58.3 miles.

Try to lose 5 to 10 pounds so I can get over my plateau that I've had since 7-25-09 when my dad and I were in Minnesota.

Save up money for new clothes and exercise equipment like workout DVDs and weights.

I didn't make my goal this month.

I'm going to shorten my goal a bit as I'm going to focus in another area for November. I plan to do 50 miles in November for my modified goal.

I think the rest of us took a vacation!!
I know this is the first time in 6 months I was sidelined with a massive tooth infection and did not walk in 4 days. I did walk in my med.- induced mind.

Keep up the great work.

Okay, here goes.....the official commitment.

I am GOING TO get 10,000+ steps 5 days a week (25 miles per week). That comes to a goal for the month of November of 200,000 steps/100 miles.

Also, I am going to do strength training/core exercises 3 times per week.

I wear a ped each day. Anyone else?

Now, I'm official.......pretty scarey.

Take care of YOU, while I take care of me. WE ARE WORTH IT!

Stacy - I was thinking about this all week, lol. What about taking your daughter with you!! Either using a stroller or shorten your distance and adjust it to whatever you can do. At least it would be a walk!! Might be good for her also until the weather gets bad!!

Shirley - You can set your goal whatever way works for you. See what you get at the end of the month and adjust it then accordingly for the month of December!! Have a great visit with your DAD and enjoy!! Do you have a pedometer? I bet you will accumulate some walking time while away. Hope you will have a way to drop in on us!!

My minimum goal per week is 6 miles (5 times a week) so my monthly goal for October is 120 miles. Looking forward to meeting and exceeding my goal :)

Stacy, do you have a friend you can meet to walk the mall at night or trade off watching your kids in order to fit in your exercise?

I'm walking 5 miles everyday, 7 days a week. I never stopped to figure out how many miles that would be in a month, because I didn't want to get discourage.
We are going to Florida so I will miss a few days of walking. We are stopping in Kentucky to see my Dad. My Dad is an Architect, 85 years old and still working.
He didn't go to college, but is a licensed Architect in 3 states: Michigan, Kentucky and Texas. Well I'm off track, I guess I'll walk 100 miles this month. emoticon and Love to All!

Stacy, have you tried any of the walking dvd's? I use them consistently when the weather is such that I don't want to go outside. That way you can exercise at home with the little one and not have to worry about someone staying with your child.

I use Leslie Sansone's walking dvd's. Look for one at your fitness level as she has some that are much more gentle (20 - 30 min miles) and some more advanced (10 - 15 minute miles). She also has some with what she calls boosted walking which is another name for light jogging intervals. It always gets my heart rate up (especially the faster ones). Sometimes her peppiness gets to me, but mostly she just inspires me to keep going.

My goal is to walk about 90 miles a month at a minimum. When the weather turns cold I can go next door and use the treadmill. The only problem with this goal is that in a couple of weeks my husband will start basketball practice (he's the head coach at the high school) and he won't be home in the evenings which means I'm either going to have to go over to the treadmill when he gets home or do it at 5:00 a.m. We have a 3 year old daugher and someone has to stay home with her and she's not allowed to go over to the gym as it is a small company gym. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I can walk outside over my lunch hour until it turns really cold.

One of my goals for Oct was to enter a 5k race and complete it before my 70th birthday . Today I walked a 5k race and finished it. I hadn't trained for speed but I feel ok with my result. my time would be considered slow at 21 min. per mile but that was still better then I do on my daily walks. Thank you Nancy for your support and I did buy a pair of Thorlos socks at Sports Authority. (maybe that was the reason for my speedy walk).

October's (my "change-of-eating" diet Anniversary month--started October 11, 2008) exercise challenge 1300 calorie burn (C/B). Looks like I will need one more month to reach my goal weight.

I would like to join in your walking at least 30 min/day challenge. I don't know if treadmills are included for that walking and/or if it's ok to go beyond 30 min; but I'm motivated into walking. I generally walk a 3.5 mile walk which takes me a little over 60 min. Below are my walking minutes thus far for October. I'll set my distance goal at 15 miles/week, or 75 miles for the whole month of October.

10/1 - 62 min. walk (3.4 miles); C/B: 374
10/2 - abt 45 min. on treadmill @ 3.5 mph setting; C/B: 542
10/3 - 60 min. on treadmill @ 3.5 mph setting; C/B: 723
10/04 - 45 min. (2.5 miles) walk; C/B: 272
10/05 - 25 min. walk (2.3 miles); C/B: 127 + incidental walking between buildings I clean @ work from bld. 5 to bld 12 to bld 8 and back to 5, vs driving (abt 15 min.). Also got on treadmill for 60 min. @ 3.5 mph setting. Total C/B: 647
10/06 - 35 min. (1.6 mile) walk; C/B: 153
10/07 - 40 min. walk (2.3 miles); C/B: 242
10/08 - 88 min. (abt. 5 miles) walk; Total C/B: 507
10/09 - 49 min. (2.8 miles) walk; C/B: 296
10/10 - 72 min. (3.6 mile) walk; C/B: 367

My goal is to log at least 75 miles walking/jogging this month. I did more than that in September but it will be interesting to see if the colder weather starts becoming an obstacle for me. Only time will tell!!

My goal for September was 750 minutes of exercise. I reached it with 768 minutes.
My goal for October is largely influenced by hubby's new diagnosis of diverticulosis.
Get more fiber! Nutrition tracker shows I'm only getting about 15-20 grams of fiber on a good day. New goal is 20-30 grams each day I use the nutrition tracker.
Strength training at least one day a week at the Y.
Walk/jog 5 miles a week either on treadmill or outisde on Pathway whenever weather allows.
Become active on Diverticulosis Spark Team, learning how to help hubby stay healthy.

My new goal for October is less ambitious than last month's. I will shoot for 20 miles per week for a total of 80 miles. That translates to 4 miles 5 days a week, which is what I'm shooting for. If I don't make all the miles during the week I can play catch up on the weekends.

My new goals for October: Walk (outside or Leslie Sansone dvd) at least 4 miles every week day. That's 88 miles for October. I think I will exceed that, but I don't want to set myself up for disappointment either. I also want to incorporate more intervals in my walking. I only did two outside walks where I got in intervals of jogging, and while that is progress, I would like to do more.

A very late check in for Week 3, but a check in nonetheless. I had a hard time getting running in this week, with a sick child home from school and packing for a 1 week vacation. The 17 K's I did get in were Sun and Mon, the last two days of Week 3. Week 4 has been going much better, and I am very close to meeting my 100K goal. This has been an incredible challenge, I really found it motivating.

It is 1.1 miles around and I do three laps so I guess my goal will be 66 miles for the month.

I want to start this challenge in October. I will set my goal at 50 miles for the month. I'm just a little nervous about that because my body keeps coming up with these little painful problems whenever I get seriously running; but I'm not willing to give up. Today it's my knees. Time to do some knee strengthening exercise.
Good luck to all...including me

My goal for the month was to walk 56 miles - I had planned for those miles to be walked super evenly - 2 miles a day - 7 days a week, etc. But, life has stepped in, and it's not been so even. I had a week of vacation where I didn't get enough in. BUT I think i can still get there - this is going to be a very big week in my walking regimen, but I am determined to get to the 56 goal so that I can do even more in October!!! Plus, I've lost about 3lbs this month - which is really good for me! :)

Hello all. I am just getting back to sparkpeople and really want to lose this weight. I made my bed this morning and realized afterward that I was out of breath!!! Can you believe that, I just don't know how that happened while I wasn't looking. Anyway my goal for the month will be to walk a mile a day. I think that will be a good starting point for me.

Hello! I am just starting this challenge today! My goal is to get up to 3 miles each time I run by mid October. I am just starting over again. (I quit running for a while once school started--I am a teacher and often work too long and too hard, plus I am finishing up my Master's degree so I have homework of my own!)I am hoping to get back to three days of running a week and to work my way back up to three miles.

my goal this month was to transition from walking to running. this morning I ran a 12 min mile pace for 32 min straight on a treadmill at 1% grade. I've been interval training outside so I did the treadmill to check my pace and distance. At the beginning of the month I was running 3 min before returning to walking so I am happy with myself. I am thinking I will do a 5k near the end of October. woohoo.

Good morning, afternoon, evening all
It's evening here even bed time, hubby has already retired.

Well - I have found out to day that I am NOT walking 7 kilometres every day but only 5.5. Mind you, lately I did think that walking 7 kilometres in 42 minutes, you wouldn't be walking would you. And at age 60.... No - I'm fit but not that fit.

So, I have to change my goal. I can't walk the 140 km in September as I wanted to but only about 120, but that's not THAT bad either isn't it.

So last week I walked 27.5 kms that is 17 miles.

Something to think about:
Negative feelings produce negative thoughts, negative thoughts produce negative actions, negative actions receive negative actions.
The same goes for positive feelings.

If you'd like to begin a personal relationship with Jesus today, please pray this prayer:
Lord Jesus, I invite You into my life. I believe You died for me and that Your blood pays for my sins, I now turn from everything I know is wrong. Thank you for the gift of eternal life, By fait
