When I was learning to knit socks I used youtube to learn th kitchener stitch since I a visual learner and the patter directions were not coming to me very easy. If you need help on any stitches I suggest looking of theknitwitch on youtube she is very easy to follow.

Good Luck and happy knitting

That is great, you got a lot accomplished today. Ten rows is a good amount, hope the carpel tunnel is not giving you any trouble with all that!!!

I got about 10 rows done on the cables last night, so it is coming along nicely. I passed off the gift project today at PS meeting--one of the other ladies knits, and she agreed that the idea was worthwhile, but that we would have to start from scratch. So she is going to do that one. i got a young one started on her first prayer shawl for her mom today, so that should be a great thing.

That is great that you made you own cable needle, very creative. Sorry about your carpel tunnel. I had surgery several years ago on my left hand but now my right is giving me problems. Just hate the thoughts of surgery especially with the right hand. Just can't imagine not being able to knit and crochet, type etc. for awhile! I can't do too much knitting/crocheting at one time either, my hand just goes to sleep!

Working on the cable project today--carpel is acting up a bit, so I'm splitting it into 2 sessions. I'm planning on 4--5 rows a day, and it should be done by spring. Tried to find the kind of cable needle a really like in a larger size yesterday--guess they don't make them anymore. That's OK, some copper wire from the stack in the basement, a bit of fingernail polish from the bathroom, and Voila!

I went to Ladies group last night, thinking I would ask one of our 3 Babaras about a proble. Turned out she was giving me a started knitted PS! We also got treated to a fabulous chicken hot wing hot dip--So far, I know there is shredded chicken, hot sauce, cheddar, cream and blue cheese. She is going to bring the recipe next week, and then I've got figure out how to slim it down, because it was fabulous!

That is great, good luck. I made a throw that is similar to that, garter stitches on each side and cables down the middle, turned out really nice. That was my first experience with a lot of cable stitches.

I have done it! I wrote out the directions, figured out the number of stitches, and have officially started my first knitted prayer shawl. Very Aranish looking, cream colored chunky, slightly fizzy yarn, garter stitch border, and 3 cables running down the length. Now we will see how long it takes to make it!

The cable needles I used weren't actually a U shape, they were straight with a little bend in the middle. I think the ones you are talking about would work much better. I will get those before doing cables again. I have tried the moss stitch but I agree the garter looks just fine. Boy, I sure would hate to have to go into a knitting competition!!!!!

Have you tried the bent holding needles? I don't even want to think what it would be like to up double pointeds like some books tell you to use, but with this thing--likes like a lopsided U shape--it just dangles there until you are ready to pick them up again. I've also decided that I'm not going to try the moss stitch borders--just plain garter looks nearly the same, and is sooooo much faster and easier! After all, these are not going into a knitting competion!

I think I have the world's heaviest poncho!!!!! I know there is more yarn in there than there is suppose to be!! But it is finished and I enjoyed wearing it in the mtns. last week. Now for the hat!
Sure hope I don't run out of yarn with this crazy sweater!
Glad you remember the knitting and purling etc. I don't think cables are hard but I have trouble keeping the yarn on the cable needles without dropping it. I might be doing something wrong??!!

Isn't it funny how you have to keep getting yarn...and then leftovers! How frustrating! But you have the world's greatest poncho!

I actually got my needles out, and some yarn. I have remembered both knitting and purling, and decreases, most of the increases, now to tackle cables.

I was able to finally wear my poncho while we were in the no. ga. mtns. this last week. Now I need to crochet or knit a hat as I have leftover yarn. The sweater is coming along nicely but I don't think it is going to be very fast. I'm ready for a quik project!!!! Somehow I've missed this topic page for awhile, don't know how that happened. Glad to reconnect with everyone.

You may want to check out a Big Lots store in your area for yarn. I was at a friends house and she had yarn from a Big Lots store. The price tag on the yarn was $1.25.

Hobby Lobby doesn't have much this week either. Shame, since it looks like we may have another big snow. Or at least big for us. Our pt that move here from the north just laugh at us! They claim we do not know how to drive in the snow. They are right!

not much useful on sale at Micheals today--i did get some bulky yarn that looks like it may make a fisherman knit shawl. Not bad--a prayer shawl for 12$!

Here we have 3 choices. Hobby Lobby is by far the best, has all sorts of things, and nearly everything you would want for each of them. I don't use the train models or the silk flowers, but I suppose that helps to pay for the yarn that I do use! Yes, it's a huge box store, but this one is useful.

There is also a Michaels'. There used to be a great M's about 30 miles away, and I would drive there because HL had not come here yet. This one is much smaller, a ghost of the other, but it sometimes has a decent selection of what I want. There is also a mall, independent local shop--gorgeous stuff, I want to take some classes there, but frankly, I can't afford her stuff on anything resembling a regular basis!

And of course Walmart, which I get a few things from and mailorder. Check out the ads and the websisite for HL--everything goes on sale at pretty frequent intervals, if something is in the planning stages, you might get lucky in time!

Did you like the hobby lobby store? One just opened where I live and I have not been to it yet. Way Cool that you found such a bargain. I found a few web sites that assist me when I am stuck in knitting or crocheting.

Hobby Lobby was having a 40% sale this week on some yarn I was wanting to try, and on all hooks, needles, etc. So, I went to stock up--and found teach yourself to knit kit. Normally those are overpriced, but this one had the exact articles I was planning to buy...a couple of pairs of needles...for less than I was going to spend on them...and 40% off! So getting the book was like free stuff. It has some decent patterns in it as well. Now I just need to find a bit of time!

I have broken down and bought a pair of needles. Now I have to remember what to do with them. The only yarn specialty shop here is town was closed twice this week. I hope it is just weather related.

Yes, yeah, I have finally finished with that particular "monster"! It looks nice but will have to figure out the best way to take a picture of it and then how to "post" it. I'm not too good at that. Now I am starting on a pullover sweater that I hope will go faster!!!! I know everyone is tired of hearing my wailing about the poncho!! thanks for the support. Sandi

Thanks Liligrac. I also have a pattern for socks that my knitting teacher said would be easier to start on. I might just try a stocking first. I know how it is when you want to keep working but it is time for bed. Seems like that is always my problem. Yes, good thing you are on second shift! Have a good Monday. Sandi

Sandi, I started off making Christmas Stockings. It's done the same way as socks, but with regular yarn and bigger needles. I did make 2, socks come in pairs. I am now almost done with my first real sock! 1/2 a pair! I've turned the heel and about a 1/3 of the way down the foot! I'm so excited it's almost done! I stayed up way tooo late working on it last night. Good thing I'm working 2nd shift today! Socks are so fun and a lost easier than I thought!

I already know how to knit, but I want to learn how to make 2 socks at the same time using 2 circular needles at the same time. I have the internet instructions, and will try them on the next pair of socks I make.

I sure have done that before. Have just finished crocheting an afghan and notice about 3 rows down that I had picked up a stitch wrong, had to go back and fix it. It just takes practice and more practice. Just have fun with it.

Well, I am knitting. Not fast like my mom, I love the endless clicking of the metal needles. I am slow and I have to let the right needles drop to yo, but I am doing it! I had to shorten the pattern because my needles are too short. In the end I will have a doll blanket for one of the girls.

I also, found a book and I have been using it as a guide for things. I only know knit and purl and yo anything else is new to me. I will show a picture when it gets bigger.

The local Yarn shops where I live give free knitting classes as long as you buy the yarn from them. You're going to buy yarn anyway so why not? I took a knitting class at the local vo-tech to learn dpn technic so I could learn to knit socks. I agree knitting is like riding a bike. I first learned to knit at age 12, so it wasn't that hard to pick back up 40 years later. I have now started my first pair of SOCKS!! Enjoy and welcome to the group of knitters!

I, too have an instruction book on knitting and one on crocheting and they help a lot. So do the websites that have been mentioned. Sometimes I seem to learn better when there is someone there actually showing me how to do something. Guess I'm a visual learner!!

For me, I took a couple of classes at a local craft store and then bought the book, "Knitting for Dummies"....and with that and alot of watching viedos online....I taught myself. There is a really good website with alot of viedos and a great forum....it is www.knittinghelp.com. Check it out....Good Luck!!!!

I agree about finding a group near you. Also, I might suggest that you try to find a good "Learn to Knit" book. I think knitting is rather like riding a bike, once you learn, you don't forget. It will come back to you again. I also might suggest to you to look at the Ravelry website. There are tons of groups there and you might locate one near where you live.

Nice to have you join our group. I don't know where you live but it would be good if you could find a knitting group where the ladies meet to knit/crochet, chat, etc. and those that are there could probably help you learn especially since you have knitted before. Of course, you can always go to a place where they teach knitting but then you would have to pay. I belong to a group from our church, we meet twice a month and have a great time. emoticon emoticon
