I wear 187's for derby, but when I am lap skating or recreational skating I prefer a less bulky pad. I have an older pair of TSG pads that are much slimmer and don't get in the way as much when I am not anticipating falling. Atom and scabs also make some great slimmer and smaller profile kneepads. Something to consider is what you wear to skate and whether you will be putting them over or under jeans. If they are going over, having an open back is usually helpful. Under, you want a slim profile. Even a hard cap gasket under their pants is enough for many recreational skaters.

Being used to doing single knee slides when necc from playing derby, I don't trust myself to even speed skate without some kind of knee pads anymore. :( I've had some pretty disastrous results when I realized as my pants grabbed the urethane that I didn't have them on. Better safe than sorry!

187 pro's are excellent pads. May even be more than you need, but they are great.

all time high of 204 in 2007. Have never gotten back there but never have I reached my low either. GRRRR time to get serious!!!

First, I am not skating derby but just skating in a rink for fun. But whenever I fall I hit my knees and have had some bad falls. The last one left me very bruised and swelled and I have had X-rays to make sure that I didn't break anything!!
So I am hoping to find a reliable knee pad that would offer protection when I fall. I was hoping to find some brands that you might recommend? I will probably buy them on Amazon. Most of what I saw on Amazon was for children...but I did find a brand called 187 Killers (or something like that) that said they could be used for Derby so I figured they might be good to try.
Any other suggestions?
