Hi everyone! I signed up for the AFAA online certification. When you did the practical portion of your exams what did you demo? I'm a cycle/spinning instructor and Pilates, not so much traditional strength. Any tips for demoing for AFAA are appreciated.

Good luck with the test. Pay very close attention to the instructors - they tend to make a point of emphasizing the parts that are on the test. For instance, they might be teaching about perceived exertion and they will say something like, "What is perceived exertion again?" and then ask that question AGAIN! That means it will be on the test!

I had already been subbing classes so I was familiar with group ex but I was still a completely nervous wreck during the exam. I don't test well but got through it - I had studied the manual though but found the instruction beforehand very helpful but overwhelming.

During the practical part, just take a deep breath and think for a sec before you start your presentation. I've told this story before but I will tell you anyway! As I said, I was extremely nervous but had already been teaching - I knew my body parts and muscles but nerves got me. When it was my turn for the practical, my muscle group was hamstrings. You have a short period of time to do an exercise for that muscle, giving form cues, etc. I started doing squats with good form cues and on the beat but, of course, realized after about 30 seconds that hamstrings are not being worked! So I said, "OK, now we are going to work our OTHER hamstrings!" and started doing ham curls but ran out of time for form cues. I thought I was going to vomit b/c I was sure I had failed but they stopped the test and said that I had passed that portion (no one else found out they had passed until the notices were mailed!) b/c I had caught my mistake, fixed it and used humor to deal. So that is my lesson to you!

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

- Judy

Jayke,

Sorry that I don't have any experience to share with you re: your question. However, I can understand your concerns about testing; especially when you hear that it's quite a challenge.

What I just did was do a Google search using these terms:
"AFAA" + "Primary Group Exercise Certification Workshop"

I clicked on an article from eHow entitled, "How to Prepare for AFAA Primary Group Exercise Certification

Read more: How to Prepare for AFAA Primary Group Exercise Certification | eHow.com

And as you scroll down that article, on the right hand side of the computer screen are more related videos specific to AFAA and the Primary Group Exercise Certification.

I like this one too:

Perhaps looking at those will give you some comfort?

I also saw some links on AFAA's Facebook page where people were leaving comments.

I'll be rooting for you and hope you come back to tell us your experience!

Hey everyone!

Tomorrow I'm taking the Primary Group Exercise Certification workshop through AFAA. I've been a yoga instructor at my gym for a year and a half now, but I have virtually no experience in the "group ex" classes: step, strength, cardio, etc. I thought this workshop would help me branch out, but I've been hearing intimidating things about the test (that it was hard/scary, people failed)

now I'm SUPER nervous! Anyone have any advice for me? How did you get through your group ex training?? Did you prepare before hand and what worked for you??

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!
