THANK YOU SUE! It went very well. I was happy with it. I went in there with no real format in mind. I did intervals of kettle bell, kickboxing, stability ball, hi/lo aerobics, and weights. All of those were standing, and then we used a weight or kettle bell, and the stability ball on the mat for the abdominal work. Actually, I think it went great, and the participants liked it, so I am happy with how it turned out. Now that I know more about using kettle bells, I am going to include them in some of my other classes.

Pam Hope your kettle bell class goes well. I agree winging it ought to work. You know how to work the muscles. It's just a different shaped weight. Lots of times I use one heavy weight and do various kettle bell style swings.

Susy: Congratulations on finding an eating plan that is working for you.

Hope everyone has a good week.

Only have a quick micro-second to type this:

The link doesn't seem to be working for anyone (I don't know why)... Sorry about that!

But to find the book online yourself, type in "Google books" + "60 Seconds to Slim".

The recipe I made is on page 283.

PAM: I like your "Pam's Plan!" (Even if you don't really call it that!) LOL

SUSY, THANK YOU for the "GOOD LUCK" wishes. I think I will do just fine by 'winging it.' Honestly, several times this weekend, I pulled out the kettlebell that I borrowed from the YMCA to work on a program. After a couple of exercises, I stopped. I simply am NOT going to do that or any other exercises at home. I do not have the time, and besides it really isn't much more to it than what I do using dumbbells in a lot of my other classes. I will let you know how this 'winging it' format goes. emoticon

I couldn't get the link to work. All I got was "This Page Cannot Be Displayed." That's OK though because I have my own food plan which works very well for me. I call it 'Pam's Plan.' (Not really. I don't call it anything) emoticon

CONGRATULATIONS on your weight loss! That is AWESOME! Whatever works, is a good plan to follow.

Out of here for this evening. Have a GREAT WEEK, ALL!

PAM: Good luck on this week's kettlebell classes! Let us know how it turns out...
emoticon emoticon emoticon

I thrift store shop the most when I'm bored. When I'm focused on something, or have things to do, then I don't go to them so often.

But speaking of thrift stores. That last visit I mentioned in a previous post: I bought the book "60 Seconds to Slim: Balance Your Body Chemistry to Burn Fat Fast." by Michelle Schoffro Cook, PhD, ROHP

I knew her name when I saw it on the book. She advocates choosing an alkaline diet over an acid diet.

I've always steered away from diets that tried to tell me to eat very little meat. I love protein from meat! Mainly chicken and hamburger patties or beef tips. My mantra USED to be: Point me to the main course (meat)! Forget all those side dishes!!!

Well... let's just say I'm finally coming to the conclusion that I MUST find something new. What I've been doing is NOT working!

Happily, after four solid days of being 99% compliant, I lost 3.8 lbs. I know it's not fat weight. I've long suspected that my food choices have caused my body to have an inflammatory response; which causes extra water weight gain. So that loss is probably mostly that. But it sure feels TERRIFIC to see a loss on the scale!

Tonight's recipe was REALLY delicious! Although I had to do more prepping than I'm used to doing. My husband said: "Make this AGAIN!!!"

Okay, so here's the link if anyone is interested: I couldn't get it to go directly to the recipe. But once you click on the link, you will then see highlighted in yellow "Protein-packed Burrito Bowl for One." Directly underneath that in blue numbers is a clickable link. It says pg 283. Click on the blue 283.

Basically in a nutshell, the diet says to eat 70% of your day's food from the alkaline choices, and no more than 30% from the acidic choices---but make sure those acidic choices are WISE, nutritional choices!

She also says that when a body ingest mainly acidic foods, the acid MUST be moved out of the bloodstream pronto---because it's so deadly (detrimental) to the body. The body uses its internal wisdom and moves it to a place where it causes the least harm: your body's fat cells. Then those fat cells balloon out; plus they keep the fat in.

Sorry... I'm really tired and probably didn't say it all that clearly. But when I'm reading her words in the book it appears to make perfect sense to me!

Okay on that note, I'm going to bed!

Hello Everyone,

SUSY, good to hear that your shoulder is doing a little better. I have not taught the Kettlebell class yet. I will teach it on Monday and Wednesday of next week. I am glad to know more about Kettlebells because we have a bunch of them at the Y, but I have never used them. I think I am going to like them. The instructor with whom I trained did different exercises on each day. I am not going to use either of those routines because she had the class UP for a minute and then DOWN for a minute. That went on for something like 45 minutes. I could follow her just fine, but since I will be the instructor, I do not want to do all of that UP and DOWN. Oh, I will do UP exercises and DOWN exercises, but I am pretty sure that I will save all of the DOWN until the last part of the class. I mainly wanted to see Kettlebell exercises, and I will throw in my own stuff for the other parts. The instructor said that she does something different every class, so they are used to things changing. I will get it together tis weekend or I may just 'Wing' it!

You really found some bargains at the Thrift Store. I wish I would shop at Thrift Stores. I wish I would just shop anywhere. I hate to shop, and I never go 'just looking.' I only go shopping when forced to get something. I go to the grocery store (which is very small) and buy only what I want for the next day or two because shopping is such a bother for me.

Have a GREAT FRIDAY and a WONDERFUL WEEKEND, ALL!

Stopped by a thrift store today. Bad. Bad. Bad.

Because I'm trying to declutter! Not bring more stuff home!!!

Bought 3 books. One is a HUGE 10 lb medical book (only $2) that is going to my ex-husband. The upside is that I can borrow it any time I'm in town, but he's the one that will store it in his house! And he will refer to it too. He's more into health now than when he and I were married (a zillion years ago).

I also bought a red resistant tubing band with the corded handles for only $2 and in TERRIFIC shape! Did I already have one? Yes, but I am always hoping that I'll find someone that wants to work out with me, so I "need" a spare for them! LOL

And last of all, I bought another cat scratching post for my cat... $2.50. This one is a little different than the one I have and she's really liking it!

Night y'all!

Goodness! I say this all the time... but time really does FLY!

I'll try to catch up on the posts now:

This morning we left the camping spot we had been in for five days. It was about 40 minutes away from civilization, and while we had electricity + water, the campground itself seemed primitive.

Now for the next five days we are on the NW side of Little Rock. If I want fast food, it's all of about 7 minutes away! LOL (Or a little more, depending on which fast food I want to go to.) Tonight I chose Chipotle. But for the most part, we eat at home 4 and 5 days a week.

SUE: I know you're about to have a really busy day---Wednesday! I don't even know what that word means any more! And I miss it... sometimes! LOL I'm still taking my turmeric and ginger for my shoulder; just not so frequently now that my shoulder has calmed down a lot. I'll keep your recommendation for the pineapple in mind.

TONI: I agree with Pam: Annie is adorable! Hopefully you WILL get to take your grandkids back to the pool this summer! The more they're around water, the less apprehensive they'll be. So sorry about the two instructor classes you wanted to take, but were cancelled for lack of attendance. I can imagine you were disappointed.

PAM: Have you taught the kettlebell class yet? I think that's TERRIFIC that you have a new (to you) class to substitute teach! That keeps it interesting for you! Let us know how it goes. Yes, I'll bet that people stayed away from the track when it's so dang hot outside! Maybe I shared this once already, but I read that Mickey Mantle used to keep cabbage leaves on ice. And then he would take one to put on top of his head (under his baseball hat) to keep himself cool... switching the leaves as they lost their coolness. Somehow or another little factoids like this stick in my memory, but important facts that I NEED to remember just go off into "la-la-land" where I can't retrieve them when I need to!!! LOL

Night y'all! Keep posting when you get a chance!

P.S. Thanks, Pam, for getting us started on posting our Team Flag points! I am usually on my phone, and I managed to find how to do it! emoticon

Hello Everyone,

TBOURLON, Annie is adorable! I am glad your grandchildren enjoyed the pool. Like Sue, I USED to teach swimming lessons, but it has been several years ago. Both of my children could swim before they could walk because we were in the YMCA's 'Parent/Tot' class. If there is a YMCA near you, they teach swimming lessons all year long. An adult is required to be there with children up to age 3. The instructor shows the adult how to teach the child to swim. Most children love it.

I hope you will continue to post here on the 'Chat' thread. It helps us get to know each other better.

SUE, fortunately it was a little cooler today, and rain is predicted for the rest of the week, so I don't know if the races will get to go on this Saturday or not.

SUSY, I hope your shoulder is doing much better.

Take care, and have a GREAT WEDNESDAY, ALL!

HUGS
Pam

TBOURLON: Welcome to the team. Sorry I missed greeting when you joined. emoticon This emoticon is under fitness.

In answer to your question: I taught swimming a really long time ago. I got my WSI certification back when I was in college. (A really long time ago.) The WSI Water Safety Instructor certification is the one required by the American Red Cross to teach swimming. Before taking that class I had to take the Life Guard training class. I'm sure there are probably more concise ways now to become a swimming instructor.

I took both my kids to Mom and Me swimming classes when they were very young. The first one was only 6 months. The second one was a little older. However, he became a competitive swimmer. The two older ones could take regular swimming classes. The younger one would probably have to take with a parent or grandparent,

Even though I was a swimming instructor, I felt it was better to have someone else teach them since kids are more likely to listen to someone else that they don't really know.

Pam: Hope you are managing to stay cool in the heat. I remember your description about working at the race track We have a heat advisory here to try not to spend too much time outside and be sure to stay hydrated.

Hi there, and thanks for all the goodies! Well, I finally got to take the grandkids swimming yesterday (what, no swimming emoticon?), which was the first time for Annie, who will be 2 in a few weeks. I bought her a strap-on inner tube floatie, and after some initial apprehension she started enjoying herself, figuring out she could lean forward and "kick," it was so adorable! Wish I had pictures of her swimming, but here's the most recent:

The other two are older, 6 & 8, and really don't know how to swim. I kept them in the shallow end and tried to explain about floating & kicking. They were a little scared, but fortunately there were lots of other kids their age in the area, which I think inspired them to keep trying. Hopefully we'll get to go back before summer is over. Anyone out there ever taught swimming before? A local community college did have an instructor course, but like the personal trainer course I tried to take there, not enough people signed up for the class and it was cancelled. emoticon

Hello Everyone,

I haven't been home from the race track very long, and I am soon going to bed. The night was sort of slow at the track, and I imagine people were wanting to stay out of the heat. It was really HOT there tonight, and there were 3 fans running near me.

I will be substituting for a Kettlebell class at the YMCA week after next. Since I haven't taught a kettlebell class ever, I attended the class once last week and I will be going again this week. It was fun and a good workout, but most of the exercises that the instructor did that day are the same ones that I do with a dumbbell. She does different things though, so maybe I will see something different the other two times that I go before I teach the class.

I am exhausted so I am out of here. Have a GREAT SUNDAY!

Happy Thursday. Thursday is my least busy day after Wednesday which is my most busy day. So Thursday always seems like the weekend (kind of). Only two morning classes. I keep trying to cut back, and then I get involved with another place. Never supposed to be much, but they always end up being more classes than I thought would be involved. It's a good thing I enjoy it.

Susy: Sorry to hear about your carpet, but glad your shoulder is feeling better. Good luck with your book. Sometimes that stuff can be really boring. When I look something up, I am interested in that, but if I have to read something it's a whole different thing.

Weather: We have had some really hot weather--upper 90 and 100. We almost broke some records. However, this week has been pretty nice. Today is the best. Low humidity and lower 80's. It's supposed to start getting hot tomorrow.

Hope everyone has a good rest of the week. I have an all day staff meeting at the dance studio on Sunday. So that kind of ruins my weekend. I teach Saturday. I guess that's why today seems like the weekend.

Three things:

(1) Our carpet has been backordered for another two weeks. So everything we had planned out is now in flux. Hubby and I are re-figuring our calendars of changes. Some things will get omitted...

(2) My shoulder is improving each day!

(3) Chapter 8 of my Senior Fitness Manual is either bland and dry, or... I don't understand what they're saying because it's written so high above my intelligence level! I feel a bit STUPID.

Anyway, that's my update!
Night...

Yes, that's what kind of day I had. I think we ALL had! HOT!

Thanks, SUE and PAM, for mentioning my shoulder. It is much, much better. However, not 100% back to normal. But the severe pain is over. (Fingers crossed!)

I have completely forgot what I should be responding to, so let me start fresh.

Tomorrow our carpet is SUPPOSED to be in at Lowe's. If it is, then we will be renting a flatbed trailer to haul the carpet 90 miles away to the place that is going to replace our RV carpet. Except they don't have us scheduled to come in until 7/20. So once the carpet is in their possession, Steve and I will have about 4 - 5 days to go elsewhere for sightseeing. More on that later....

While our RV rally was going on last week, I didn't get to open my Senior Fitness Study Manual at all. But I was able to get back to it yesterday! I am only two (long) chapters away from taking the online test.

But there are a total of FIVE components to the Senior Fitness Specialty Certification, so that will leave me with the remaining FOUR to complete. I swear, with my constant interruptions, that if I get this certification before the end of 2015, I will be HAPPY!!!

Gotta go. Hope everyone is doing fun summer things!
Susy

P.S. I just learned that lemon oil diffused in a spray bottle with water will dispel gnats! I really, really need this information right now because these dang gnats are everywhere!!!

Hello Everyone,

SUSY, I am also very sorry to hear about your shoulder. I am guessing it is the same shoulder that has given you problems in the past. About a year ago, my nephew's wife had a successful surgery for 'frozen shoulder.' She's not had any problems with it since her surgery. I hope yours is much better by now.

SUE, I have Cricket's ashes in a beautiful little carved box, too. He was so special to me, and none of the other alternatives seemed 'good enough' for a pet whom I loved so much.

I hope everyone has a GREAT WEEK! It is going to be in the high 90's (like 97 or 98) all week here. That is the temperature, and I can't even imagine what the heat index will be! I know one thing though. It is going to be HOT here in this area.

Susy: So sorry to hear about your shoulder. It's so hard when we hurt! I get recurring elbow tendonitis which acts up when I do certain moves on the pole. (One armed spins are the main issue.) So I can still do plenty of pole, just not one arm spins.

I find turmeric and ginger help. Pineapple is also supposed to help with inflammation. I eat quite a bit of pineapple because I like it.

The way we remember our pets is by keeping their ashes. We have them cremated and get their ashes back in a beautiful little carved box. The vet we have now also sends us a card with a paw print and a small piece of hair from the tail tied in a little bow. I have a little display sitting on a chest in an extra bedroom. I have little angels and little doggies by the boxes. That may sound weird, but unless you know what's in the boxes, they just look like small jewelry boxes.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

Hi team!

So sorry to be MIA the past few days, but I've had a severe issue with: frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis), bursitis, or impingement. I don't know which one---all I know is that I've been HURTING!

So other than logging on Spark or doing something I felt REALLY necessary, I've stayed off of Spark and the computer, in general.

Last night was the first night I've slept through the entire night. Plus, didn't wake up and immediately reach for the naproxen. (I only had a total of three doses, but in between those doses, I was watching the clock!) I did take a lot of turmeric and ginger for inflammation as well.

Anyway... shoulder is still bummed up; i.e., can't raise it, use it, or much of anything. But the SEVERE pain (as long as I don't move my arm) has slacked off.

SUE: I am so sorry to hear about your precious pet. My beloved Westie, Max, died close to four years ago, and I grieved. It really did help (some) when I wrote a story about him and how he came into our lives, as well as about him as a part of our lives. My heart goes out to you. At a store I was in yesterday, I saw "remembrance stones" for pets. I'm sure that is very soothing for some pet owners to have...

Okay everyone else: Please forgive me for not going back to read the posts. I'll try to get to it later. I'm babying how much I do with this shoulder/arm.

In the meantime, I have been promising myself like crazy that once this heals, I will get back to REGULAR exercise so that this never happens again! And of course I will limit myself to gentle exercises as I get back to it. This is a HORRIBLE position to be in!!!

Pam, Thanks for your concern. I still miss pets I have lost in the past and think of them often. They are like family. It was our 17 year old we lost. Our 14 year old isn't very healthy either.

Busy day today. I had 6 classes. Started at 9:30 a.m. and finished the last one at 8:15 p.m. I'm getting too old to do that many. Some of them were subs. Thank goodness I don't always have that many. I try not to do evening classes, but I don' t like to say no when someone really needs help.

Oh SUE, I am so sorry about your dog. I have seen the photos of your dogs, and they are all so beautiful, precious, and photogenic. My 18 year old cat died last year, and I still think of him and miss him daily. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Hope everyone had a great Independence Day weekend. emoticon

I haven't checked in for a while. All is good here now. (A week ago yesterday, we had to have our 17 year old dog put down. It's so hard to lose a loved pet.)

Great to see active new members.

Hope everyone is having a great summer! emoticon

Thanks Pam! I did have a terrific weekend!

I'm relieved to say that doing all that packing of books and then loading them/unloading them did NOT cause my body to hurt. Whew!

We went to go see the fireworks last night with our granddaughters.

And then today was a lazy dazy day: I cooked brisket in the crockpot, watched a tiny bit of TV, read both my new magazine (Scientific American), as well as worked on my Senior Fitness Workbook. Plus said goodbye to our various friends here in this RV park.

We're pulling out in the morning and hitting the road!

One sad thing: I put my weights in storage.
But I've kept my resistance band with me!

Night all!

Hi everyone!

I'm just popping in for a couple minutes and trying to catch up with the posts. Excuse my yawning; it's been a l-o-n-g day!

Just to update: We're leaving this RV park on Monday (which is in Kansas City). First stop is a 5-day mini RV rally that includes one day of canoeing in Lebanon, MO. After that, we are planning to visit a crystal quartz mine in Mt. Ida, Arkansas. After that, we have an appointment in Chanute, KS to have new carpet put into our RV.

So... what that means is that I'm boxing up LOTS of my books and other stuff to put in storage over the next two days. We have to have the floor of our two closets clear, as well as wherever there's carpeting (such as under the entertainment center and my computer desk. Well, I've got fitness/health books stored EVERYWHERE!

And then after the carpet is put in, we'll travel back to Kansas City for two weeks before we continue on north towards a bigger RV rally being held in Michigan. (I can't remember the name of the town right now!) Gotta get my stuff back out of storage when back in KC...

Okay, so let me reply to some of these posts:

MELISSA: Here's a photo of the exercise that you couldn't see:

I haven't given it a try yet, but I will!

PAM: I'm glad to hear that you're going to have your class try this exercise! It's a good one!

MELISSA: I really like your flier! Very professional looking... And I'm all into aromatherapy! That's a very nice added feature for you to offer!

SHAMEAKA: Great to have you on the team! And I'm thinking that this 3rd time will be a charm and you're going to be an official fitness instructor SOON! We'll be your cheering squad... you just have to check in regularly and let us know how you're doing!

KRISTIE: As much as I say I like aromatherapy, you'd think I'd act on it every day. I have a TON of essential oils, plus a diffuser. But I go in spurts as to when I breathe them in. Very relaxing! Or when I need to: I use peppermint or rosemary to be more alert. I do use cedarwood almost every night. The fragrance of cedarwood is supposed to help the pineal gland do its job of releasing melatonin; the sleep hormone.

So happy to see everyone posting!

Hello Everyone,

SUSY, I am not familiar with the exercise you described. I do like the link that you shared with us, and I really like the exercise that you pointed out to us. I am going to use it in my classes.

MYWALK2FITNESS, I wish you the best of luck getting your business started. I like the look and content of your flyer. I think once your name gets 'out there,' you will be very successful. Like 1DEVOTEDWIFE, I would be at your classes.

1DEVOTEDWIFE, THANK YOU for your service in the military. Congratulations on your accomplishments. emoticon to your upcoming ISSA Certified Fitness Trainer title.

BEST WISHES to ALL of us in reaching our goals.

I'd like to learn more about aromatherapy one day, it sounds delightful for yoga or pilates or just relaxing.

The possibilities always outnumber the problems.

Hope everyone is well! I've been doing good! Trying to get things going..created a flyer so that I can start leaving them at places! Let me know what you guys think! :) - I decided to incorporate aromatherapy in my MAT class since I've had great feedback from past clients, I also offer a meal plan, support from a health coach (since my hubby is a Holistic Health Coach and a Personal Trainer, I thought it would be a good way to motivate and and help people jump start on their weight loss and I offered a Care Package at a discount rate that comes with an Organic Superfood Green Powder, Organic Detox Tea, Organic Facial Wipes to keep acne/and breakouts at bay and an organic aromatic foaming shower gel so they can go home and relax after their workout. I wanted to stand out from all the others so I wanted to offer perks to get people interested. I hope I am not over doing it. I also priced my services a little under the going rate and see if I can get some interest... emoticon

Susy: The exercise you described sounds like the Crab Walk - are you walking on your hands while your knees are bent? The crab walk movement is walking forward and backwards? I hope that helps! I tried looking for it on that website you posted but couldn't find a picture! I hope you find what you are looking for! :)

I hope everyone is breaking a sweat and doing great this week!!! Rock on ladies!

Well, I've kept looking, and found SOMETHING. It's not the exercise I originally had in mind, but it's cardio while you're on the floor (and no pressure on the big toe!). LOL

Here's what it is:

#35 Sprinter Sit-up
It turns out theres a way to gain some speed while staying on the ground. Lie down on your back with the legs extended, arms by your side, and elbows bent at 90-degrees. Now, sit up and bring the right knee towards the left elbow. Continue to alternate sides to really feel the heat. Be a speed demon for 15-20 reps.

Although I can't see myself doing this for cardio for 30 whole minutes!!!

Thank you for getting us started with our July posts, Pam!

Okay, I'm looking for some help. A couple months ago I saw a floor exercise in a magazine in a thrift store (which I didn't buy). The exercise was of a person lying supine on the floor. And they were doing a walking march with their legs.

Now I can lay down on the floor and try to imitate it (from memory). But... I'm not sure I'm doing it the way the magazine showed.

I'm wanting to give this a shot because I HAD been walking in my RV park twice a day for 30 minutes each time... but then I developed a severe blood blister on my big toe. I have been hobbling for two days now! (It's slowly getting better...)

My question is... has anyone else heard of a cardio type exercise while on the floor doing a form of a walking march?

I miss my fast walking outside!!!

We just want to stay connected as fitness instructors in our field and support one another.
