Hi Toni!

Great to hear that you plan to check in once a week!!! We've got our September Chat thread already started... so that would be the place to start! I'll be looking for your comments!

Glad to hear the improvements on your leg. Walking is always a good place to start. Like you said: Slow but steady. We've all been there at some point.

I'm going to post a brand new thread specific to Silver Sneakers, so be watching for it! You may be interested in the information!

And finally: CONGRATS on your nutrition course! Keep us updated on how it's going---as well as your 30 day SP walk challenge!!!

See you on the September thread!

Hi there, I will try to post something once a week from now on. I just joined a 30-day walk challenge on SP. My leg is much better and it's time to get moving. Also need to add some toning, especially for the injured leg. I know, slow but steady to improve this leg.

Hey Pam, it's very interesting this Silver Sneakers certification you're doing. Can you do the whole thing online? I don't know if there's any certifications in OKC where I live. I am taking a nutrition course at the University I work in - finally! I've been meaning to do this for years. First class was last week, this is going to be INTENSE! emoticon

Hello Everyone,

The weekends go by so fast, and now it is almost Monday again. Of course, the weeks go by fast, too. I guess that just means that 'time is flying by' especially since I've gotten older. Or, it could be like they say, "Time sure flies when one is having fun!" If that is true, I must be having a BLAST! emoticon

Yes SUSY, I think that is a great idea to post your last message on the September "CHAT" thread. We would love to have those members join us here on the Fitness Instructors Team.

Getting back to our topic of Silver Sneakers, for me, it went like this: I signed up online for the Certification Workshops. Three workshops were held in one day...Classic, Yoga, and Cardio Circuit. Before attending the workshops, I was sent information online which included a thorough description of each of the above and links to their videos 'modules' that included everything about each program. Each of the videos were pretty long and were to be watched and questions answered BEFORE attending the workshops. So, when everyone arrived we were pretty knowledgeable about the programs. Our leader was very thorough and prompt. Each workshop was an 1 1/2 hours long, and she was right on target to the minute. emoticon (I wish I could be more like her) So we left there certified.

She told us that those of us who would begin immediately teaching (I was already teaching because I had been assisting another instructor who moved and I had taken over the class) would be evaluated within the next six weeks. She was not the one who would evaluate us unless we lived in her area, which was 3 or 4 hours from Memphis, but there was an evaluator in our area. She sent me a notice a few weeks after the workshops and gave me a date that she would be in my class to do the evaluation. She was there, and it all went GREAT! She did send a long list of the things that she would be looking for, and then she met with me afterwards for the evaluation discussion. I made SURE that everything went PERFECT on y evaluation date, but that type of thing always makes me nervous. I did NOT let it show though. emoticon

The whole thing was really a lot of fun (except the evaluation), and I have really enjoyed working with the seniors. They are a very special group, and I feel BLESSED to be their instructor. I know you would love it, too!

HUGS to ALL, and remember to turn your RED FLAGS!

Have a GREAT WEEK!

September is almost here! But I still have things to say while on our AUGUST Coffee Chat thread! LOL

I love our team that we have here! We are active. We have 335 members (although I recognize that Spark will leave members on our team--despite the member no longer visiting Spark). So at times, it "appears" that we should have more activity due to the high membership base.

But still, we have team members who remain active and/or drop in to visit when they can! Thank you for that!!!

A couple months ago, I sent out an invitation to another fitness-related Spark team that I'm a leader of to invite those members to join THIS team. We had about seven members come over and join! (FYI: That team is sadly inactive.)

Just this morning, I sent another invitation to that team... again, inviting them to join us here.

So... should we add any new members in the next week or so, please let them know they are WELCOME! (I know most of you already do this... again, Thank you!)

And if YOU know of anyone that would enjoy being a part of our Fitness Instructors team, please send them a team invite!

Susy

P.S. I just *might* re-send this same post once I get our September Coffee Chat & Connections thread started! So you *may* be seeing it again! LOL

Pam, thank you for that Silver Sneakers explanation! I appreciate it!

The gym I'm going to that has the Silver Sneakers classes has the SS Classic twice a week. (Taught by different instructors for each one.)

And then they also offer the Silver Sneakers Yoga once a week.

I would love to try some of the other Silver Sneakers offerings in the future!!!

By the way, I did go and change my address on the Healthways website so that I'd be notified of any in-class training for teaching Silver Sneakers. Despite my listing of Kansas City, there are still NOT many chances to take any classes. (I do recognize that the bulk of training is online--and THEN the final follow-up with an in-person class to get one's certification.)

SUSY, All Silver Sneakers Classic classes should follow the same format. That does not mean that the exercises will ALWAYS be the same. The classes should include a warm up, exercises for muscular strength and endurance, a little 'light' cardio, cool down and relaxation. Equipment used is a small ball, handheld weights, and elastic bands. The exercises can all be done while sitting, but those who can stand, may stand for a lot of the exercises. The equipment can be used in any order, and it is good for the instructor to change the order the equipment is used.

So the exercises you do on Monday may be somewhat different from the exercises that you did the last time you were in the class. The focus is on 'functional fitness' to help seniors carry on with their daily activities. Exercises will focus on balance, coordination, and doing things such as getting out of a chair, bed, or vehicle; bending down to get something off the floor, reaching up to put something on a shelf, posture, keeping the hands, wrists and fingers flexible.

It is a GREAT class, and my Silver Sneakers classes at the Y are packed. They all love the Silver Sneakers Yoga Stretch class that is taught once a week, and the Classic class is taught two times a week. I teach the Silver Sneakers Cardio Circuit class once a week, too. That is for those who can stand for the entire class. It is all fun, and it gets them out of the house and something to do that is fun. They LOVE the socializing that comes along with being a part of the group.

Hope you like it, and I hope this helps.

PAM: No, I didn't know there was a Spark Silver Sneakers team!!! I'll have to check it out.

I am on the mailing list for Healthways Silver Sneakers certification classes. But since my mailing address is in Texas, the only emails I get for those certification classes are in Texas (specific to my mailing locale). * * * I suppose I could go about getting that changed to the Kansas City area since I'm here more months out of the year than anywhere else....

So here's my question: Are all Silver Sneakers Classic classes the same? I really LOVED some of the exercises, but my mind didn't retain them. I will be going back again next Monday and I will attempt to REMEMBER this time. But I was just wondering if all SS Classic formats are supposed to be the same exercises?

Okay, now I really am getting offline and going to bed! LOL

Hello Everyone,

Yes, my son likes having me at his games. The only problem I have is that my 'crazy ex' and his 'crazy wife' are usually there, and sometimes they sit with my other son and me. I am actually glad that they show up, but Gosh, STAY AWAY from ME! emoticon My son's car is being worked on now, and he is in a rental. I hope his car is soon fixed and ready to go again.

There are A LOT of chair exercise videos right here on the site that you might want to try TONI. Also there is a Chair Exercise Team, and also a Stronger Seniors Team, and both of those teams offer a long list of You-Tube Chair exercise videos. I've looked at several of them, and I like them all. Some are easier than others, but FREE is certainly working looking into. emoticon

SUSY, did you know that I teach Silver Sneakers Classic, Yoga, and also Silver Sneakers Cardio Circuit? Those classes at our Y have more participants than any of the other classes. My classes run between 45 minutes and an hour, although I could make them last longer if there was time. No class at the Y can go longer than an hour because there is always another class coming in right behind each class. I do love the Silver Sneakers classes. I also teach the Classic class two days a week at another gym. I don't teach the Yoga there because I do not have an open slot to fit it in. Another lady teaches Yoga though. Most participants like the Yoga class better than Classic, because it is so relaxing and soothing. I like it ALL!

SUSY, did you know there is Silver Sneakers Spark Team?

PAM: I know your son is going to appreciate your attending some of his upcoming football games. Being the new head coach HAS to be exciting!!! Ouch. Ouch. Ouch on his tire issues... especially since his car is still so new.

TONI: So sorry to hear about your painful hamstring. BIG OUCH! Pam already suggested the chair exercises--and I agree! A number of years ago, I was limited to staying off my feet. So I ordered a chair boxing DVD. I thought I was going to love it. But NOT! Check through your library system, if you can, before purchasing. Let us know how you're progressing. And don't be a stranger here during your recovery!

SHAMEAKA: Thanks for participating in our daily "uncover-our-team's-flag-for-points!" I can do that using my cellphone, but sometimes it's pretty frustrating since the font is so small. But I do try to participate--and I appreciate seeing you (and others) participate as well. How's your studying coming along?!

SUE: I know you're out there somewhere! Stop in and give us a holler when you get a chance!

MELISSA: I know I've seen you here and there. We appreciate everyone that is active on the team! How's your new business coming along? Has the flier brought you some new business? I sure hope so!

Okay, an update for me: I attended my first Silver Sneakers class yesterday. It was called "Classic." Supposed to be an hour long, but the clock had been removed (for some reason) and the instructor went about 75 minutes. I was so-ooo ready for the class to be DONE! Although I have been doing the Curves Fitness workout, the Silver Sneakers Classic really made me work out! I also discovered that my left side is so much weaker than my right side. This is a relatively new development (I think). Anyway, I'm going back tomorrow for Silver Sneakers Chair Yoga.

Night!

TBOURLON, I am keeping your speedy recovery in my thoughts and prayers.

Type "Chair Exercises" in the search box above this message, and you will get links to Coach Nicole's videos. You might want to check them out. Chair Exercises might be very helpful until you can get 'back to business' again.

I just wanted to stop in and say "Hi!" Thanks much for all the "goodies" I've been getting, they really help. Unfortunately I am down with a torn tendon/muscle/something in my right hamstring - it hit me on Friday and was quite painful. I am doing better today, did the RICE treatment, but I'm afraid it will be weeks before I can really get back into any cardio. emoticon Well there's always upper body weights, and I can walk - slowly, that is. emoticon emoticon Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. emoticon

Hello Everyone,

I hope you are having a GREAT SUNDAY! I got up a little earlier than usual because my son is having 'tire issues,' and his uncle came over to help him check on that. He bought his vehicle new in 2014, and he has already had 'tire issues' A LOT. It is not really his tires, it is his rims which cause the 'tire issues.' He is like me; we are both so busy that it is difficult to find the time to take care of 'small' things. Then the small things eventually turn into "HUGE" things that cost a lot of money, and/or cannot be fixed. That is where we BOTH are now on certain things. Anyway, I am hoping this can all be fixed for him today.

Still teaching a lot of classes, and in a week the Home School P.E. classes will resume. I am canceling my Friday evening class this week, and I am finding a substitute to work my shift on some of the Friday nights on the Fitness Floor. I want to attend several of my son's football games. He is the Head Coach this year of a high school football team! He is excited about that, and I am also excited for him.

SUSY, sorry about your laptop. I do all of my computer work on my desk top computer. I don't do any computer work on my cellphone or I-Pad. Way too small.

WOOHOO! On joining Curves and getting into Silver Sneakers. Silver Sneakers is a GREAT program. I hope you will enjoy going to Curves and the Community Center. Sounds like fun. Have a good time with your family today.

HUGS to ALL,

1DevotedWife... Great job on all your studying! Good luck on your upcoming tests!

As for me---and why I've been so quiet---my laptop has decided to go so s..l..o..w..
So I've been staying off of it. And I just don't like doing things on my cellphone. So I do the absolute minimum.

I do have news, though. I re-joined Curves and have gone twice a week. I also went to a free Pound fitness class at a community center last week. (Killed me, but I liked it!) And I also joined a local community center that offers 3X week Silver Sneakers classes. I plan to start this coming week. Yay!

I took a (too long) break from studying while I read several fiction books. Now I am getting back to my Senior Fitness studies. FINALLY! LOL

Gotta rush off! A full day today of visiting family!

Hello 1DEVOTEDWIFE, it is GREAT that you are doing the flags for the team. Every point counts for the team and also for the member. I keep waiting to get a 10, 20, or 50, but so far just 1, 2, or 3's. Oh well, like I said, "Every Point Counts!" emoticon

It sounds like you have a lot going on with your studies and also your training. I wish you much success in reaching all of your goals.

emoticon Take care, and keep in touch with the team.

Hello, I am doing the red flags for my teams. I alternate my direction (top to bottom and bottom to top) to try to hit all of my teams equally. There's not much going on with me. I have an Anatomy & Physiology final this week, so studying is the plan until then. I started my personal jump rope training along with foam rolling and calisthenics yesterday to start getting off some of the weight I've put on. One of the assignments this week in my fitness trainer class is body fat measurements with calipers, so I'm excited about this as well. I'm a bit overwhelmed by the sheer amount and scope of the material we're covering, but I'm hoping to do well with all of my assignments especially the case studies and final coming up next month.

Hello Everyone,

SUSY, Thank you for getting our August Chat & Connections Thread up and running.

It is great that we have more members visiting our team and posting on our threads. All members who post on our threads or the Team Wall will receive a weekly Team Goodie. The "TOP 10" members who earn Spark Points and/or Log in the most Fitness Minutes according to our weekly Team Digest, will also receive a Team Goodie for their accomplishments. There is a 'catch' to that though. The member has to have been active during the past 30 days. I wish more of our members would be 'active' on the team because I really don't like to leave anyone out.

Also, I hope all of our members are turning the RED FLAGS on their START page so that our team can earn points. These points can help to bring our team up on the 'Fitness Teams' Leaderboard. In addition, the member is also awarded the RED FLAG Points. It is a win-win situation. So remember to TURN THOSE FLAGS, and show us what you got by posting on the Team Wall. I really need HELP there because I can't seem to get more than a 2 or a 3. emoticon

Have a GREAT AUGUST EVERYONE!

Take care, and keep in touch.

C'mon in & let's visit! It's AUGUST already!!! Can you believe it???

Each month on this team, we send out a brand spankin' new chat thread!

Here's where you can just say "hi!", mention something you're doing in your life (doesn't have to be fitness-related), and/or just comment on someone else's post!

= = If you've never participated before, now's your chance! = =

We just want to stay connected as fitness instructors in our field and support one another.

So c'mon on in and let's visit over a cup of coffee!
