Meals are not what they use to be . When I was growing up My Mom , Dad, Grandmother and 4 children all set down and ate super together. After I grew up and had kids of my own we always ate super together even after my divorce which minus one from the table. Now I am 70 and I eat alone everyday and believe me cooking for one is a challenge . I have learned over the years to pare it down so I don't have so much left overs.

My refrigerator is small and will not hold a lot so a few years ago I bought a small freezer since I wanted to buy more frozen foods. It has been a big help to me.

Just finished reading the Breakfast chapter. I always eat breakfast. I rotate between eggs one day and rolled oats the between day . Sometimes I eat grits instead of oatmeal. This morning I ate Oatmeal with raisins and yogurt stirred in plus walnuts.

I actually did not have the best day today. I did keep to my eating plan but did not get to walk or do my morning pages. I will write tonight and process.

The following I resonated with about walking and thought I should share. . .

Awww thanks for the heart. Every now and then you can spot a heart shape cloud. I figure it is God telling us he loves us. I read of someone who would look for heart shape rocks and find them!

I am doing good with morning pages and I feel like they are helping me to maintain a positive attitude. I struggle more with the food journal because I don't want to see reality sometimes. LOL Truth is better than telling yourself lies. Like the bible says the truth will set you free. We must live in truth and not fool ourselves. I have a lot of room for improvement in my diet . I am not fat for no reason.

I love heart shape anything . I guess it makes me think of Love.

I am now up to the chapter on the scale. Due to fluid retention my weight fluctuates a lot. Yes I would let the number on the scale drag me down so I stopped weighing myself way back before I read the book. I weigh once a month now.

I have a tendency to bloat in the middle so I don't know what is a good gauge for me. If my pants feel tight it don't always mean I am gaining weight . They can feel tight one day and loose the next.

Maybe for someone with better health, the scale could be your friend and noticing how your clothes fit.

I am trying to focus on life style changes. Make some food rules for myself. Exercise to my limit. Tracking my habits to see if I am accomplishing my goals and if I am then I am happy no matter what the scale says.

TURNING-POINT,

That particular sprig of cactus was an anomaly as the rest of them with rounded tops. This one caught my eye and deserved a photo. I would imagine it was damaged when it was first a start, by an animal or a bug or something else that broke it. Like many of us, getting broken happens when we are young and then we grow thorns to protect ourselves. Sometimes the hurt does not happen until we are a bit older and taller. We are easier to fix then... I think.. of course I am generalizing and using the cactus as an analogy (a thing which is comparable to something else in significant respects) loosely about self-comfort and eating and other things related to why we are here working with the Spark People Tools. We have got this. emoticon

What a cute Cactus? I never have seen one like that before . I like the heart shape .

I find there is a lot of trail and error , to find what works best for me. I am all for trying different approaches.

For my health issues I find walking 10min. a day too hard. So this week I am going to scale back to 5 min. plus I do other exercise besides walking. I might break my walking up 5 min. twice a day or more if I can.

Yes, nights are MORE difficult for some reason... perhaps this is when those bad habits were formed initially. One thing I remember doing when I lost 30lbs with Spark People in the past was to save my larger intake of calories for my evening meal so that I did not feel left out e.g. when everyone else was busy enjoying their dinner time I could too.

I think that I will try and balance things out differently in that way in the future and see if it helps me.

Nights for me are the worst. I do good all day at my husband constantly is getting something. Apple. Carrots. Nut mixture. One slice of toast with peanut butter. Eventually the sound, smell and knowledge of him eating makes me say I will have one. Some nights I get out my journal or put on my smelly lotion and other nights I donít care and eat along with him

I do eat more when I get over hungry . I use to be a full square meals a day person , but now I think I should try what she says in the clean eating section about eating two snacks.

Sorry to say after reading on the snack attack I had one - I think because it was late near bedtime It made my sugar too high this morning. At least I did not binge , with the help of the questions. In the past I would keep eating past full just because something taste good.

Just finished reading the introduction. I read her book "The Artist Way" and halfway thru another book she wrote . I will give this one my full attention now and finish the other one when I can. I use to write Morning Pages and thought it was helpful then I got distracted by life and got out of the habit . At this time in my life I need this team and her new book to jump start me back . This morning I wrote 3 Morning Pages and it felt liberating to put my thoughts to paper.

I'm just finishing up on the Artist's Way (am on week 9) and would love to participate in this group if it is based on a book by Julia Cameron.

I am not sure that I will have time to do both books simultaneously so I’m wondering if you have a start date or how this team is run. I although ordered the book on Amazon and it should arrive this coming Saturday.

I think it was Trish from our other team that recently posted a nice blog about appreciating the negative things that happen b/c they serve the wonderful purpose of giving us a benchmark from which to recognize the positives. That's now how she said it, but that was the general idea. I think it was the blog about how much she now appreciated a good night's rest now that her CPAP machine is in her life.

We often have similar thoughts running through our heads.I was just thinking a couple of days ago something similar to this posting. I was thinking how I make great meals for my family because i love them and really want them to eat well. But I rarely think of myself the same way. I mean I rarely take the time to consider what I'd enjoy eating that is good for me.

Well, I say rarely, but that's more the old truth. My new truth is that I do try to remember that for myself more often. And I am doing it more often, but it takes conscious thought. It's not a habit like it is when caring for my family. I hope I can learn to care for myself with the same tenderness I offer my family!

Lol, I posted on another team and then thought... wrong team to post something so deep and definitely might trigger someone to write about. Lisa you will have seen it before... so I am re-posting some of it here:

Spark People is helping me realize I have many voices in my head. At least now I can realize that Fat Justyna is the one who has those beliefs, the "child". I can tell her that dieting is a lie. I can tell her what DOES work for me is healthy eating and being active (walks or aquafit or swimming...) or spending time with friends or doing something creative or getting more sleep.

Dieting is a LIE. DIETING IS A LIE! If I have successes they are superficial. The "High" of undereating is a drug that screws up my metabolism and brain. Did I know that in my youth? Does the media tell me that? Of course not. Yet more and more I see real people who are stepping away from the dieting promises. Just like eating the junk and overeating seem like a comfort. Again... lies. Superficial. But what did Fat Justyna have available at the time? She was young and vulnerable and believed it because for many reasons the alternatives were too hard.

I think that last line is worth me looking at again sometime. That the alternatives were too hard. I was not worth it. I wanted a quick fix for so many reasons.

BUT now I know. I KNOW the truth. Healthy food choices are the gift to myself. I may not always say I love myself, but when I do the walk or make the salad I am no longer listening to the voice that says "you have to do this because you are not good enough, not like everyone else"... Instead I am saying do this because you ARE good enough and worthy. I am currently reading a daily devotional by Marianne Wiliamson and she talks about our bodies, the vessel we are, and being able to offer it to God to "use". When I care for this vessel it is usable.

OK, so you don't love yourself. In Overeater's Anonymous they say "act as if you do". What would the nurturing you do to look after yourself? I always have choices. When I want to do something nurturing for my family I can make them things that are unhealthy for that immediate "wow, this is great" reaction but there will be a part of me screaming inside "NO!" Why? Because I know it is feeding into the lie of emotional eating. I will show my love for you by feeding you fat and sugar etc. BUT I also can look at what I am making when it is healthy foods and see it as a gift of real love. For making them the best they can be. I made a healthy apple crisp for breakfast for my guests yesterday and as I peeled each apple I said a prayer for each person in their family. I invested that food with love. Oats and apples and pecans....

There are many kinds of love and we are all different for which way "works". I think there is a book called the 5 love languages. let's see if I remember.

1. Gifts. You feel loved when someone gives you presents. You need to see proof.
2. Words. You feel loved when someone says those words to you and you need to HEAR them and words of praise.
3. Actions. You feel loved when people do things for you. You need to feel looked after.
4. Touch. You feel loved when people are intimate with you. You need hugs and kisses and closeness.
5. Time. You feel loved when people spend time with you.

The book says that we may express our love one way but need the expression of love a different way. When I look at my childhood I was given gifts when my family was not present, abusive and neglectful. So for me gifts are.. kind of a bad thing. I LOVE time with people and physical contact. Yet I express love mostly through physical actions. Maybe we have to find the right "love language" for ourselves too.
Gift: Buying ourselves a new book or planning a trip as a reward.
Words: Telling ourselves out loud when we have done something good, making a list at the end of each day of what I have accomplished.
Actions: Feeding myself good foods or working out or putting on nice clothes.
Touch: massage, awareness of how my body feels, brushing my hair.
Time: Allowing myself to read a book or play harp or do something fun.

I think it is why we are uncomfortable when we do something that is not our "love language". We have to find something that works. For me certainly it is changing my thinking so I realize when I do those things i am trying to say "I care".

The things for me that helped? Realizing that God's love was unconditional. No matter what I said... and I could be honest, I was loved and I was where I am for a reason, part of a plan. Realizing that no matter what I did.... and I could screw up... my past was to make me ready for something new, the best I could be. Loving myself means putting myself into nature and steering away from sugar and meditating. Loving myself means getting help, breathing, being NOT perfect. Loving myself means surrounding myself with positive and mailing a safe environment for myself.

So... what is your love language? What do you crave from your significant other? What rubs you the wrong way even when the sentiment was meant well? And... do you love yourself? When you don't, what has worked and what does not work to tell yourself that you matter? I think that many of us have trouble feeling loved and accepting compliments and putting ourselves first.

hahaha, love the last posts. AH... I had a green cleanse this morning. A smoothie of spinach and pineapple, apple, lime and ginger. I think 5 whole servings of fruits and veggies in one sitting. It is about time I cut back on all the Christmas carbs.

Neighbour and I had meditation today. It was all about frame of mind and how that shift can move mountains. I am grateful for this house and praying for all those who have no home. Grateful for this chair and community and praying for those who have no where to sit and have to struggle alone. I am grateful for my abundance of fruits and veggies and praying for those who struggle to just survive on what they have. I have choices. I have opportunities. I can move and have time to move. I am taking nothing for granted today. I CAN eat clean. I CAN get in my steps today. I hope I choose to do my best today because I'm worth it... and it allows me to do more for others instead of focusing just on myself.

Sweet, sweet stomach, loudest part of my body (in my head), I must tell you something. You have had more than your share lately, and still you complain. You are confused, my dear body part, you aren't hungry at all. Perhaps a small part of you has emptied out, but you don't need to be full all the time. Belly o' mine, you are a treasured part of me, you help send nourishment to my body. But you're not the only body part that matters. So hush up your whining, leave me be for a few minutes. Had bad sugars yesterday without having eaten 'bad' things, but luckily it's going down slowly, the blood sugars, still too high though. I've given up diet sodas (I was stubborn in not wanting to give up my 'one vice') and it's making a difference. Finally am having some success in the last few weeks.

It was pretty cool with the "fire" effects of the clouds... I played my harp while watching it with a song I wrote called "perigee moon" which I'll play for you sometime D. 1460 words a day is probably an hour for you I'll bet. I wondered about doing something different this year and writing out my meditation wall experiences.

Just back from a light-free area of Ontario, where we went to see the lunar eclipse last night. Absolutely awesome. At first, we were disappointed because it looked like there would be a few clouds, but the clouds picked up dark blues and reds from the eclipse and made it magical!

I've been thinking of doing NaNoWriMo this year. I've never done it, and never undertaken anything as long as a novel, but I will be off work and want to do something different and that will lead to something productive. Maybe this is it. I'll do the prep in October and see how it goes.

Other than that, I have written HALT on my index finger with a Sharpie a couple of times so I see it when I'm reaching for food. It worked once, and another time not so much. Still exploring!

Oh I do agree. I have been wondering if I can do Nanowrimo this year. I used to hate when my character would take over and do things unplanned. Now I miss it. Even though I scheme about how I will make a story board and make her stay within the boundaries THIS time. I always get too excited and skip the story board part and she just snickers.

I am back from my trip, and during it I was able to have dinner with a dear writing friend from years ago. It was great to hear him talk about his characters, and see the love he holds for them. I miss that, having a relationship with my characters. Too long have I let them languish. Too long have I denied them a space in my life. That is one of the voids I'm sure I try to fill with food...

What can I do for myself today?

Hope today is better (Sunday) because I know we are "neighbours" and it is a gorgeous day out Seawave! I screwed up today. I talk to my guests about many things.. and am often too open about the lives of my kids. Plus, I tell it through my eyes. DD heard me today and got upset. Well, she has a point. I am more likely to tell a stranger what I think than her... and I should not tell them anyways. This is going to be something to write about. Giving myself boundaries.
