Found out we are having summer school for students with special needs - unfortunately it will be remote teaching. Not sure I am up to another round of that this soon. Especially since we don;t know how we will start the school year.

Krys, That is a great idea! I will do that on the one coming up. I wish I had thought of that on another one that was not giving out certificates.

I was supposed to do 2 google trainings on zoom. Our plumber came so late I was unable to do either. Luckily these are going to be recorded so I should be able to access them later but I probably won't get a certificate because there is no proof I viewed them. I guess I should just be glad for the information in case we are doing virtual teaching in the Fall.

This is definitely a strange year. Tomorrow I will go to school for the first time since March 13. We were told we have 4 hours to pack that room and get back out before the next shift of teachers come in. Usually we would pack gradually. We have never done a "Speed pack" before. We also have to pack up all of the kids belongings and bag them and label them within an hour because the parents were told they could come at that time to pick up belongings. We will just do the best we can. emoticon

I have an IEP meeting online today. Yesterday we had a zoom meeting with our pre-k class. Only 6 of them logged on but they were thrilled to see their friends. Lots of silliness and laughter.

It's tough enough to teach online without this kind of mishap.

Schools out here like everywhere else. I'm supposed to be available from 8-12 to answer questions, prepare lessons, do paperwork, etc .Unfortunately, i could not remember my school password this morning and after three attempts go booted off. Worked on other materials but could not get to admin e-mails. Tomorrow I'll have some explaining to do.
Sure do miss actually being at school and working with my students. emoticon

Teaching online works well as long as a student gives me full attention. I struggle when I student starts falling asleep or there's background noise. That's most of the time.

Krys, It does work pretty well. They only go half of a day and by law the state has to provide services for children 2 and over if they qualify for sped. If we did not have the typicals, they would only be in class with other children with special needs. This arrangement gives them the opportunity to see and model skills from typically developing children. The only downfall is that not all of the "typicals" are great models. LOL

Krys, We have a reverse inclusion classroom. The class is a special education class with typically developing peers added in so they can model skills.

Krys - sadly the teacher BULLY is a special education teacher but she is also a BULLY. She is pretty good with the kids who are severe and profound but none of the substitute aides will work in her room - they simply turn down the jobs. None of the regular aides will choose her classroom because she is nasty to them. I have known her forever and she continues her behaviors but . . . she has the credentials and it would be hard to replace her. She isn't mean to the kids, just the adults.

Today my kids started dropping again - one had a seizure on her way into the school this morning, before getting to my classroom and another has pink eye and was sent home at lunchtime.

This has been a week that I will be HAPPY to kiss goodbye tomorrow afternoon.

School was Ok. I got pulled from my room to sub with the 2-3 year olds for a couple of hours. OMG! They had 4 children who were wild as could be. Climbing on everything possible. I was so glad when the regular teacher arrived and I could go back to my own room. emoticon

Scarlet - bet that was quite a change from your normal class. Whenever I subbed in sp. ed I was left with a sense of awe for all they do.

NANCY - those teachers need to walk a mile in your shoes! They would be totally lost in a sp. ed classroom, I think.

Completed my 5 IEPs and feel like a was run over by a large truck. LONG Day and lots of tweaks and changes in wording before they can be finalized. I detest dealing with the HIGH SCHOOL teachers who think they know more than anyone else - nit picking over wording and other details.

It was a mixed day. Not sure the flu is completely gone but kids are still dropping and strep throat has shown up this week and staff is also dropping still. One of my aides was out today and will be gone tomorrow too - she is probably a strep throat victim based on the blisters in her throat and mouth. Some kids cranky, others sleepy, and still others just ornery.

Yesterday was the WORST of a week filled with long challenging days! Ended up catching a new strain of the flu complete with vomiting and diarrhea! The two residential facility staff both showed up but brought their flu with them and by 2:00 I succumbed to it and had to leave early sick! What part of STAY HOME when you are contagious don't people understand? This is particularly nasty and except sleeping, I have spent hours in the bathroom vomiting and it is UGLY!

Three hour early dismissal for kids and no school tomorrow - about 1/3 of students in the school and an increasing number of staff absences FINALLY compelled them to close school for the flu and other illnesses that are epidemic in our area.

I should probably go home and crash but will see what the powers that be decide. Staff supposed to report tomorrow but I may not go in because I am getting sicker despite all my efforts to avoid it.

We are having a great day. The kids have had a ball sand painting, playing with sand and making art with and eating popcorn for the letter P. Feels more like a fun Friday than a Thursday.

Today was a busy day. One student went home sick, another stayed but was sick, the others all acted like they weren't feeling good either. The one who felt good had a fun day and became quite creative working on a special project with the adults,

School was Ok today. We have 3 kiddos who have problems when things don't go the way they want them to go and scream and fall out. I believe 2 of them have ASD but have not been diagnosed. There were only 2 screaming incidents so life is good.

Today was a pretty good day, especially considering that my students' schedules have been changed this week. I think it will be a positive change but the kids were a bit confused.

I did homebound teaching with one student and she did great until about halfway through the session when she got up, walked to the calm-down room (right next door to where I teach her), and had a major behavior episode that resulted in her being restrained and 4 of the staff that worked with her needing medical treatments for scratches, bites, etc. Then she came back quietly and finished the task and was doing before she walked away. My policy when I do homebound is that behaviors don't get you out of your work - but I do modify the task when the kids are obviously not able to focus - usually reducing the demands so just a token amount remains so they don't have multiple behaviors and restraints.

I agree, testing time is stressful for everyone. I can only imagine how challenging it can be to keep your class quiet. I have had kids screaming and running around during lockdown drills. Some of them just can't be quiet.

The general ed students just finished their mid-year testing. Fortunately my students don't have to test, UNFORTUNATELY, my students have to remain in the classroom all day and be QUIET - not an easy task when I have SCREAMERS in my room. Today was a totally chaotic day but we made it through without any casualties. I hate weeks when there is testing going on - even when my students don't have to test.

We are an inclusive classroom so we have 2 teachers and 1 assistant. Whenever someone else's assistant calls out, they take ours. We are not sure when we will get her back and we are in the middle of Math testing, PALS testing and testing for a new social emotional curriculum. Ugh. Also, whenever a teacher does not have a sub they pull me to cover that class. ugh #2
Things should be better when all of this testing is over.

Today wasn't bad. With half the kids gone for half the day, it was pretty uneventful. There were some minor issues but knowing that gifts are contingent on behavior through lunch tomorrow, helped calm them back down. Kids get out shortly after lunch and while we have meetings, the chances are really good that we teachers will leave by 2:00. Our principal doesn't make us stay a minute longer than he has to. The principal and assistant principal came around today will little gifts for all of the staff including the residential facility staff who are here routinely. Assistant principal also goes to another school but when asked if she would be here or at the other school she said DEFINITELY at our school - partly because our faculty senate meetings last about 15 minutes and the other school's last almost 2 hours EVERY time. She said she can't imagine why they drag it out so much - our business is done quickly and effectively because we have team leaders' meetings weekly, grade level teams meet twice a month and subject area teams meet twice a month - what do we have to talk about that hasn't already been hashed over by those meetings before they become issues for the entire school.

We will survive these last two days - even if I have to do it with bronchitis, sinus infection, and conjunctivitis (aka - pink eye) all the gifts of Christmas for a teacher. Tomorrow is the special ed field trip to see Frozen that I will miss since I have 3 kids who scream who can't go to a movie and one darling who has been having major meltdowns since Halloween so isn't allowed to go for safety reasons. So all the "good" kids and my aides set to go. Then Friday is a half day and we will exchange gifts and watch a Christmas movie. We can survive this!
