This truly must be the period for wacky blood sugars. For the last few weeks I have been running from 49 - 58 during the morning and 230-268 at bedtime. So a lot of tweaking with my routine was done this morning before I left the Doctor's office. At the same time I need to be sure those highs were not the result of dehydration. I need to keep my meals and snacks close to the same time each day, which they have not been these last 2 weeks. The weather around here has been to depressing. So that needs to improve so I can get out and jut move it more!

Have a great weekend.

Michele......had shocking event other day. DH had his blood sugar under control with diet while living in our condo. Then, the move happened with three meals prepared by others. DH blood sugar checked and it was sky high. 374 reading....his highest ever. Dr said don't eat anything white. Well, don't you know.....white bread.....mashed potatoes.....white rolls....ugh. On top of that I can't get him to exercise.....any. That is bad, I know. We are aware that expending some form of energy using his muscles helps to regulate his blood sugar. That news threw him into depressing "funk". He does have a table bike in storage. Getting it today and try to get him to work it. Wish me luck

Yes, Michele....Mother Nature surely seems to be confused....one day I wear T-shirt and the next day sweat shirt. We made our move! Have landed among the land of BOXES. My oh my, way too many boxes.....have huge pile started for give away. The transitions is going great. Meeting very nice people.....the 3 meals provided are excellent....whew....big relief. Got DH medical drs arranged and appointments set up. So things are moving along nicely. Not much free time as yet.....we are all still unpacking. But, DH is doing very good so far.

Moving whether locally or not, does present loads of stress. Hope you can find a quiet space among the experience of moving. ..... Believe you stated your DH was Diabetic. If so, that stress could be settling in on his lower extremities and effecting any Neuropathy he may have.

Stay strong and keep the Faith that all things will resolve on their own.

Our sunshine emoticon and warm weather returned also,.....YAY! As a result I managed to walk emoticon a total of 10 miles yesterday. Lots of tension in the household.....I think combo of the stress of moving in 2 weeks to new state, new facility, new friends, new drs has DH on edge. Having to give up his garage, tools is like cutting off his arms. Hoping he will meet some like-minded people and enjoyable friends

He's been complaining a lot about how heavy his feet feel. Like "slabs of concrete" he says. He is diabetic and as result of his MS he is not able to flex or point his toes. I suspect not enough blood flowing thru lower extremities is reason. Don't know if anything can be done. Yes, we do have and occasionally wear compression hose. Maybe that is the answer to do daily. What a workout it is for me to put on him though!!

Hi Emma....welcome to the team. Being a caregiver does have it's challenges. Taking care of yourself sometimes is low on the list of things to do.....but, that's not a good idea. If I don't take time out for myself.....I get too depressed and hence, find the wrong foods to stuff in my mouth. Reaching out to SP has been my life saver since I am pretty much stuck at home with DH. My biggest downfall when trying to lose any weight was NOT recording on the food tracker. OH MY when I began doing that I could actually SEE the areas that needed improvement. I was SO unaware of how much sodium I was consuming in a day. The tools this site has.....ie; exercises of all kinds and for all types of people. When I was recovering from knee surgery.....I did chair exercises. On days when I need a boost.....I will read blogs or articles of interest. Try to focus on taking 10 minutes each day toward a healthy lifestyle. Oh, and I used to think....at my age making a lifestyle change seemed unimaginable....but, I am here to tell you.....YES, it can change. Have a great week.

Hi, all. I care for my Brother and sister (and need care myself) I got to meet the Case Manager. Her job is to keep us out of hospital. I think we are all on that team. My brother needs to see a pulmanologist and as there are not mobile ones, I don't know what she's going to pull out of her hat. We were talking with this other company who does come out but not for big people like my brother. He never gets out of bet. Eats what we feed him. But no way to weigh him I have no idea the scope of the problem. When you tell them he is large over 400 and they don't hear it until the day before the appointment. I just have to wonder if Any body is doing any thinking any more. My food has been good though, we will see about tonight. I have lots of calories left and maybe I will shoot for the lower number and an early night night.

Hi Laura....good to see you back. glad your knee has healed and you're feeling like your ole self again. DH and I had a hiccup in Dec with the flu which lasted nearly a month! Then, the cold weather hit.....brrrrr. But, now am back to my big walks.....so it eventually returns back to normal. Hang in there. I LOVE the creative writing idea! This sounds perfect for Allan to participate. I don't wish for fall to get here anytime soon.....love my summers.....but, you've got something to look forward to when it arrives.

I've fallen off the edge of the world once again! Ugh! I've disappeared for quite some time, and now I'm crawling back up on to the world and trying to get back into the swing of things.

Allan is slowly deteriorating, having increasing difficulty walking, can go only short distances from the wheelchair to something close, and from something close back to the wheelchair. And he's becoming incontinent now. I've told the nurses at Centre Crest that he needs for one of those idiot (no, I didn't say that, I only thought it) doctors to come and examine Allan and take care of business.

Last time I posted I was in a wheelchair recovering from a broken knee. I'm back on my feet again and needing to walk walk walk, but I can't do cold weather any more. I joined one of these bargain rate gyms that's open 24 hours (who goes and exercises at 3 in the morning??) but I haven't been good yet about going regularly. It's urgent that I get back to exercising to get my health back.

Something wonderful at Centre Crest! There's a Creative Writing group, and they create poetry, collaborative poetry. They get together and talk about a particular thing, and as they come up with sentences and phrases about it the facilitator writes things on a whiteboard. And then they take the things they said and work them into poetry. On Sunday there was a presentation of the things the group had done. And there are booklets available of the poetry and creative writing.

I asked if the caregivers of residents could join, and I was told Yes. The group will be starting up in the fall and I can be part of it. I'm going to grab Allan by the shirt tails and tell him he has to come and participate or I won't take him back to the house to smoke his stinkin' cigarettes. I think it would stimulate his brain. With his dementia he forgets what day it is and what doctor he will see and can't remember any recent information, but he still has his gift of gab, his ability to bloviate, and he can still make the nurses laugh their a$$es off with his wisecracks. This creative writing group would get him talking and verbalizing and using part of his brain.

Have not run into any heel problems in the last 4 years. Those boots will help as well as placing those feet on a pillow under the ankles. keeping the heels without pressure on the bed.

Is he having problems when he is sitting up as well?

Well we are having snow today, Friday and Sunday and another Winter Storm due in next week as well. Stay warm and be Safe!

Are you serious?!? Been ready for weeks!! LOL....

Rough holidays for us....both we terribly sick...DH got the flu (had shot) and hospitalized couple days.....I crawled home and went straight to bed sicker than I have ever been. Totally missed the holidays with the kids...BUMMER!!! Took a toll on us....nearly a month to get well. And, then the cold spell hit.....colder winter we have had in long time. Not fun. Now showing our home to sell as the move is only weeks away. I know my stress level is up....my eating is reflected in that.....the scales are showing it......my walking has suffered.....YIKES! I NEED my sunshine and warmth emoticon emoticon

New development with DH.....his heels are bothering him when he sleeps at night. Could be underlying pressure sore?? I have a "foam boot" his mother wore when she was in nursing care for that same issue. Been putting that on him nightly. Sometimes works...sometimes doesn't. Ever deal with this? And, any suggestions??

2017 has graciously gone to rest! Here's counting on a healthier and progressive New Year for ALL!

Sorry for the absence from the Team. The ending of 2017 through the holidays was one of the worst for me. Looking forward to more activity and much improved health for the coming Year.

For me the biggest resolution for 2018 is to lock away depression for all the coming Holidays!

Stay Strong!

Michele, I got your Facebook angel message. But I don't have anyone who would want to receive one of these chain messages so I didn't send it out. As for sending it on via Facebook, I have no idea how that's done. But thank you for the kind thought.

It's been four weeks now since the accident. I'm now on the way out of the wheelchair and on to the crutches and the walker. I sure hope I'll be able to drive again soon. It's hard to be dependent on my daughter.

A friend of mine is urging me to sue Centre Crest since it was due to their employees being asleep at the switch that I fell.. But I am not willing. I find it hard to be angry at people who are stretched thin and overworked. And they are keeping Allan, which is an expense for them because he's on Medicaid. I figure they're already giving to me by sparing me major stress and misery.

Today my daughter took me to Centre Crest to spend the afternoon with Allan. He seems to be gradually getting more and more forgetful.

And it happened again. His roommate died a couple of days ago. The first roommate died, when? spring? early summer? the old gentleman was 98. And now this roommate has died at 92 or so. That is, I think, an occupational hazard of living in a nursing home. People die around you.

I had a dear old lady who would sit outside her room in her wheelchair and tell me all these lovely tales about what her husband was doing, upstairs, although there is no third floor and the man has been dead a long time. I do believe I spoke of her before. But now she does not come out any more. She lies quietly in bed, still, silent. I think to myself, before long she will be "upstairs, on the nonexistent third floor with her loving husband and every day will be Valentine's Day."

Made the announcement in our community at the clubhouse during a function Sat morning about our upcoming move in March. Many jaws dropped.......but, just as many came up, gave a hug and said we were doing the right thing to move closer to family. That was encouraging to hear.

Hope you ladies are doing ok....kinda quiet out there

Hope everyone is doing well. We got home from our DD in Atlanta. Very productive trip. Made some decisions....whew.....the new independent living facility is behind schedule and won't open until mid-March. We do plan to move in there......unless......a ground floor condo comes on the market first. Pros and cons with both places but we feel we would rather own than rent. DH is on board now with our thinking and we continue to downsize, throwing out, give away and sell off things. It felt so good to chat with some women during the new facility luncheon with the residents that have committed to an apartment. Yes, I will be one of the youngest living there but I don't care.....I need to have people (other than DH) to talk with. Looking forward to my new life!

Oh MY Michele.....comforting to know others have walked in my shoes.....but, scary to hear you really did have a heart attack....which could be me as well!!! We're off to celebrate DD birthday this week and while there we will be looking again at living options. Think I have mentioned it's a toss up between buying a condo in independent living with activities...one meal provided...and located next to large park with walking trails. It has assisted living on premise and only 4 miles from DD. The other option (and not our favorite) is renting apt in independent living with 3 meals provided (hence, monthly fee costly), activities....no great walking areas and only 2 miles from DD. Our problem lies in the first option doesn't have a unit for sale on ground floor and may not for months or years. DH doesn't think he wants to deal with elevators since it has 7 floors. But, I'm thinking his daily schedule is not like most elderly people.....up around 10, breakfast around noon....run our errands early afternoon. So, the likelihood we would eat the evening meal in the dining room. But, do we sit here and just wait??? The other option is new construction with open date January to move in. DD wants us to take it temp till one of the condos comes on the market. DH talks out of both sides of his mouth.....wants to go.....but doesn't want to pay out the $$. So frustrating to me.Who knew decisions become MORE difficult as we age up???

Your OCD comments really hit home. I had that decision with my DH and 2 months later, I had my heart attack. Which only slowed DH for a time of about 4 months. Once I was on the mend he slowly went back to his OCD periods until his chemotherapy was stopped as it was not working. Then Hospice handled his wants during the daylight hours which gave me time for myself. IOnce hospice was in I could better handle the night time periods of DH's care.

DH had his 6 month check up and dr couldn't stop raving about all his numbers....all GREAT!

Sadly, this disease he has hit the wrong type of man.....he is a Type A.....driven, goal oriented, hard working, perfectionist......to the point of being OCD.....and, you know how "mentally" we often feel half our age??? Well, I am convinced he is the same way. Only problem now is that since we are "joined at the hip" I am his hands, feet, and muscle. He gets these ideas that "we" are going to do something.....while all along I am thinking to myself....it's "ME" that is doing this. He is the brains and I am the brawn. People tell me to "just say no" to him and walk away.....but, you don't know this man....he keeps at it.....pushing, prodding, convincing....and, or he'll move forward doing it himself and then I will end up picking up the mess he's created. So, I do what I can. His latest brainstorm......"we" have to move this HUGE HEAVY wood cabinet from the corner of our garage to the center of the garage, lay it on its back on top of a small size table so "we" can install wheels on the bottom. Then, "we" will load this monster into the back of the van and transport it to our DD home, upright it and roll it into their garage for DH to store his power tools when we move to their area. That's the plan. Somehow, I muscled that cabinet by myself into position and somehow I managed to lower it on its back without incident. Installing the wheels was the easy part. Now, he wants to go to Lowes to buy two 2 x 4's to help with the moving it into van. Off we go......his OCD kicked in.....he had me lift two dozen 2 x 4's to inspect for cracks, warps, dings, etc. He wanted the "perfect" TWO 2 x 4's. I thought I would cry on the spot.. Try lifting one of these and times it by 24. I finally blurted out......I'M NOT A 30 YEAR OLD WORK HORSE ANYMORE!!!! He had the most surprised look on his face. LOL......

Recently, I was asked what I do for fun. I couldn't answer it....I don't know what fun is. In my DH eyes, fun = WORK. He's always assuming because of his illness he is the next one to go......I yelled at him, "what makes you think so. I could easily drop over with heart attack before you". Sorry for the rant.......I'll get over it. I'm still ticked off about yesterday.

Finally picking up a much needed desire to do something. Still have no appetite and a lingering cough which appears if I get over-heated. However, with the morning temps in the low 40s the morning air does induce movement. With DD going to work earlier this week, Sir Pinkerton and I are getting that morning outside movement. Just can not seem to find a reason to eat a heavy meal yet.

Has anyone had the feeling of ' it's quite before the storm "?

Stay Safe!

Oh My Gosh Laura!!! So sorry to hear about your accidental fall. I'll bet the staff at Centre Crest came running as quickly as possible. They DID realize it was because of the water on the floor, right???!! I'm sitting here with a "fake" knee thinking about your ordeal. That is always a concern if I were to fall down. Lets hope and pray your outcome is just a bad bruising or something that in time will heal on its own. Being confined to w/c and alone in house......I can only imagine the frustration you are feeling right now. Sure hope this week turns out brighter for you. And, as for the Soup and Salad night out......Oh, how disappointing that must have been.......but, THANKS for the cute idea! Our community has a monthly pot luck and after reading this I will suggest this idea to them emoticon emoticon

As for us? All seems good at the moment......although subject to change at the drop of a hat.

Hope you all have a good week

Is it really that bad? I hope not. The emergency room people said they saw evidence of a small break, but when I went to the doctor he looked and looked at the cat scan and said he couldn't see the break. So either the break is pretty small, or maybe, just maybe, there is no break...maybe? But he's acting as if there's a break, and I'm wearing this immobilizing thing and I am in a wheel chair. Getting around my daughter's house in this wheel chair is crazy-making! I tried crutches but was awfully shaky at first. Other people can use crutches! So can I! Now that my daughter is home from work I'm going to practice a bit and get steadier. I'm cooped up here in her house alone while she's at work, and she wants me to call her every hour so she knows I'm okay.

The doctor thought I ought to go to Centre Crest or one of the other nursing homes. But I don't need nursing!!! The doctor is just worried about me being home alone, especially at night. But a nursing home is overkill.

Allan and I are disappointed. We had a date we've been waiting for all year. Every October the Knights of Columbus have a Soup and Salad extravaganza. Ten soups! Ten salads! Ten desserts! All you can eat!! All year Allan has been asking me, is it time for Soup yet? At first I was saying, not yet, it's months away. Then it was, not yet, it's still early in the summer. Then it was, getting closer, it's the end of August now. Then, soon now, September is ending and October is starting. Then, two weeks, then, a week from today, and then it was, finally! This coming Tuesday!

And it was such a lovely day today. I would have picked him up, we'd have gone and had fun with the Soup and Salad, and then gone to my house and he'd smoke his cigarettes while I get the leaves raked up.

But here I sit in this wheelchair, and Allan stayed at Centre Crest, and now we have another year to wait. (Hey Laura, you want some cheese with that whine...?)

I hope I hope I hope this injury isn't all that bad. I hope I'm just awfully sore and that after a week or so there will be no evidence of breakage and I'll be able to walk. Even if I need to use a cane or a walker. I want to get to my book clubs. My friends are offering me a ride, but stuffing this stinkin' wheelchair in a car is hard. Maybe by Friday I'll be steady enough with crutches... And maybe the next time I see the doctor he'll say that I can put some weight on the leg and walk with one crutch, or a walker or something...

(And yes, some cheese would be great with this whine. Actually a glass of wine would be good with this whine.)

With me, I've had some sort of bug that seems to like me and will not go away. Guess it's time to pull out the big guns.

Now what?? I was at Centre Crest visiting Allan, and while walking down the hall I stepped on a wet spot on the floor and fell down hard. I broke my knee. My daughter was there and took me to the emergency room. Now I'm wearing a thing that immobilizes my knee, and tomorrow I am to call the surgeon who did the knee replacement and see him as soon as possible. My knee should be glowing now from all the X-rays and cat scans.

So I won't be driving and won't be able to visit Allan for a long time. I'm staying with my daughter and son-in-law for the time being. I want to be at home, but I have to be able to get around on crutches or a walker. All this happened yesterday afternoon, and today's Sunday and the doctor's office is closed. So tomorrow I have to get busy and get on the phone.

I have always been a dog person. However, being around DD's 2 male cats that presumption has changed. Both a great snugglers as well as Sir Pinkerton. Dogs and cats are man's best friends. So far haven't had a cat or dog talk back to me. All they want to do is snuggle. Actually, they make my day more eventful and rewarding.

Have a Safe and Healthy week all.

Oh wow, I dropped off the edge of the world again. I do that, and I hate it when I do that. Until now there's been no news. Just the same old stuff, day after day, nothing new to report, just the usual bumbling around visiting Allan and listening to him saying the same things over and over, and demanding to come over to the house so that he can smoke those cigarettes.

The new news for me now is that after living in a catless house since, oh, May or April of 2016, I'm adopting two old cats who need a home! I went around to one of our local shelters and asked for old kitties that other people didn't want because of their age. I also said I wanted at least two and would happily take two who had lived together and ought not to be separated. And I said I love black cats and would gladly take black cats that were rejected by people who think black cats are unlucky.

Today I'm going over to the shelter to talk to the medical people about what these two old guys will need to maintain their health and care for their health problems. And on Tuesday I will be coming home with two kitties, one of whom is a black cat. They came from the same household, so we already know they will get along - I'm not trying to introduce two strange cats to each other. Because they came in already declawed (I won't do it because it's cruel) they can come to Centre Crest. I look forward to taking them with, one at a time, to hang out with Allan, who still misses Cuddles and wants to have a cat to cuddle and pet. Both cats are pleasant, but the black one seems especially happy to be snuggled.

Lois .... have you noticed when hubby's pressure areas are red or even open, his blood sugars running higher? Any type of inflammation will cause blood sugars to rise. Is he complaining about discomfort with those areas?

Hmmm, will investigate the Paleo diet. DH is pretty picky eater so not sure how he would do with it. Thanks, will look into it.

We made our overnight trip to DD home in Charlotte. We did ok. DH had to sleep in his w/c and his feet were slightly puffy (no doubt!!) the next morning. We drove home in the dark which is VERY difficult for me anymore.....lights, blurs and semi trucks zooming past.....eecckkk. Slept good last night in my own bed!!

Walnut trees in your yard....interesting. First person I heard with this type of tree. Nuts are so expensive to buy....so nice you have your own to pick and use!! I "caved" recently when I saw a Harvest Chex Mix recipe and it looked so pretty.....so UNHEALTHY....but, I rationalized that my GS would like them when we visited. Well, you know the volume this yields....TONS of it. I couldn't stay out of it and I don't really even like sweets.....OH MY.....one handful lead to two and then three. I hate to think about getting on those scales now! Proud of DH....he wanted to try it, but I told him no his blood sugar number would sky rocket and he accepted that.

Paleo isn't bad, some call it Caveman Diet. Actually you're eating healthy. Diabetes wise I've count way down on Insulin usage. For me that's a big goal, so far it's working. Energy has picked up also. There is a team here on Spark.

Next project here are the walnuts. Their dropping around here as the leaves are falling. When those walnuts hit the ground it sounds like bombs are dropping. Don't want to be under them when they fall.

have a safe trip!

That is funny!!! Seems like from central Ohio to KY could be long drive.....maybe not....too many years ago for me. I hear people talk about Paleo....but, don't know what it is. If it involves avoiding certain foods.....I'm probably not a candidate.....I don't like to have to watch ingredients.

Attempting a trip to our DD home tomorrow and spend the night. Grandson have some sporting events they want us to attend (baseball and football) back to back. Not looking forward to the sleeping arrangements. DH will likely sleep in his w/c.....bad, bad, bad, I know.

Actually Lois I and DD & GD went to Ky for hair appointment. My ex DIL is hairdresser. Even though HD's son divorced, I and DD never stopped going to her. I've tried other styles but, they just do not have what she can do with hair. Goodness knows the last 3 years played havoc with my hair..... since I've been eating Paleo, I'm getting back into shape.

Have a Safe and easy week.

Awesome on the blood sugars. Keeping them in range will help keep inflammation down and help his areas and pressure points to behave.

Interesting they come and go in redness so I think I am keeping them at bay. I remind him to stand or move to different hip but that falls on deaf ears. At the moment we are celebrating his success rate at keeping his blood sugar numbers in check

Before DH started his Cancer treatments he went through his family's keepsakes and left their dispersion up to his oldest son to handle. After DH passed on and I decided to move up to youngest D's both my girls went through the apartment and took care of all that for me. The only thing I have left to do now is all paper files going back prior to 1985. The interesting thing we found was DH's divorce papers from 6 previous marriages. I knew he had been married before. Why those papers were kept, he only knows.

How are those pressure areas coming along?

Yes, mentally we are still planning on moving closer to the kids. Going thru everything in our condo throwing out stuff, giving away, editing down so that one day our kids won't have to do it. That is a HUGE chore! We acquired much "stuff" from DH folks after they passed. Going thru each piece has been emotionally draining. The other day I stumbled upon cassette tapes from early 1980's from both sets of parents. We went thru a phase of recording to each other instead of letter writing. WOW.....to hear your parents voice again.....well it was strange and comforting at the same time. They were younger than we are now and knowing the road they traveled.....3 of the 4 went down the dementia/alzheimers road I listened with a critical ear to see if I could pick up on anything that sounded strange that became their fate. Nothing. Well, my next project will be to find out how to transfer these audio recordings onto the computer so I can share with other family members.
In meantime, the facility we are looking at is a high rise of condos you own. The elevators are quite small and DH doesn't want to deal with that with his big w/c......so, we must wait till someone on the ground floor decides to move out and there are only 30 units on each floor. Kinda like waiting to win the lottery! LOL...... So, the wait could be a long one.

You may never be able to convince him either. He's used to your way of doing things and being with him. No one can take your place. However, somehow you do need to let your family know what you are doing or perhaps struggling with as you care for him. It's never easy to let others know that you do have a problem (s). Yet, there is always the chance that they (family or even close friends ) could get through to him. As you stated you do need the 'down time '.

Are you still planning on your move?

Thanks for the input....sigh....sounds like we are in for it. DH doesn't handle it well. But, I will look into the increase of protein in his diet. Thanks.
I rarely reveal my true feelings to my kids so they are clueless to what is really involved with caregiving role. (apparently I make it look seamless and easy) I truly believe little "breaks" from the caregiving task is much needed....but, how to convince my DH of that is another matter.......ho, hum.

Lois ..... The more pressure put on those areas, the skin will break. It's an every ending battle to keep those areas from breaking down.. At times you can get to the point where you just do not know which way to turn. Keeping protein in his diet can and at times will help. Protein is recommended by many wound care specialists, Protein helps the tissues to heal. That was one of DH's worst problems. Even with the air mattress that area would always break down. At the end, the worst times I had was with doing his wound care and getting him turned. He did not want to be bothered or turned. I don't know how many times during the day I told him, " You tell everyone I know what to do, so will you let me do what I need to do. " Stay strong, hope you can win that battle.

Laura ..... Don't believe Allen will ever understand that he is in good care at Centre Crest. He has had your care and concern for many years. However, what you're doing is what is best for you. Enjoy your " Me Time " no matter how or what you do!

It takes a special person for Caregiving. I wonder if our love ones know how special we are?

Have a Safe and Blessed week.

yes, Laura I can SO relate to your "short trips"......I also feel same way. My heart quickens if I am gone too long (like over hour) and feel the need to rush back to check on DH. I wonder if the activity person at Centre Crest would have more luck getting Allen involved. You know sometimes they act differently with others than with loved ones. You might put a bug in activity directors ear to encourage involvement. My ears perked up when you mentioned Ithaca as there is one in Michigan. Then, I realized it is N.Y......LOL.

Michele.....was feeling encouraged as DH got his pressure sore healed over....then, BAM, another area occurred. Just looked like the skin is scraped off the surface. I keep it cleaned with wound cleanser and then apply the diaper ointment and sometimes cover it with bandage.. But, at night when he wets the urine burns when it gets on the area. He uses and changes his own briefs (more like applying a pad). I'm concerned this is going to become a constant battle.

Well, look who fell of the edge of the world once again and is finally crawling back up. I hate it when I slip away and leave People behind. This is an old problem, and I don't have an answer.

I'll read the posts from the past couple of weeks and see what''s happening. I did see that there were Northern Lights on the 6th.

That was my birthday. I'm 76 now, and my mother said there were Northern Lights when I was born.

No new news. Allan is still the same, and I'm still going over and seeing him, and gritting my teeth when he whines for me to do more for him.

Or is there any new news? I did go to Ithaca to see my friends again. I have to learn to travel these short distances all over again. I've been so shackled and afraid to go too far too long for so much time, it's very hard for me to go much of anywhere that isn't short term local. We had a belated birthday celebration and it was so good to see my friends in Ithaca again. It was there and back in one day, no overnight.

At some time I'll practice overnight. My son-in-law splits his time between Corning NY and Bellefonte PA, and I do believe it's a two hour drive, or is it a little more? now that there's the high-speed highway it's not like before when it was a pokey drive on a two-lane road through the woods. At some point I"ll go to Corning and plan to stay overnight, and Ithaca is 45 minutes away. Allan is safe. He's in Centre Crest, and they're giving him his medicine and his food and medical care. If he's bored, well, he just doesn't want to try out the activities there, and that's not my fault. Allan thinks it's my responsibility to keep him entertained. No, I can't do that for him. I can do some things, but I can't fix his life for him.

Actually I went one day a week to have my hair done. However I did make sure someone was with DH for at least 3 hours. That was hard to find until DH was placed in Hospice towards the end of his life. Then I had time 3 times a week. I kept 2 days during the day and used 1 evening and went out with a friend to a movie or Dinner. That worked great for me once I got rid of the quilt feeling of leaving mine with someone else. However the Hospice workers all seemed liked by DH. A few even showed up at his funeral. All of his Hospice Team were friendly and caring people.

yes, all good here at the moment. DH pressure sore appears to be healing. Blood sugar levels are getting back into normal range. Experiencing loss this a.m though.......because we know we have to downsize for when we actually move. We sold our long dresser from our bedroom suite that I have had nearly 50 years........why do I get so attached to "things" is beyond me. LOL....I have to keep saying...."it's only STUFF". The young gal that bought it was so excited as she plans to re-purpose it by painting,(It's beautiful dark wood mediterranian style) possibly taking out some of the drawers (9 of them) and using it like a buffet in her home. She plans to send me a picture when it is done.

I did have what I would call a near break down the other day......as a caregiver I am here 24/7 at DH beck and call. I lead a very isolated and lonely life.....which by the way surprised DH when I told him that. I have no local friends to call on. I go no where and if I do run errand I am on the clock and must be home ASAP. I try to carry on a conversation with DH and he either has his eyes & ears on the computer while I am talking....or if in his recliner will almost immediately close his eyes and fall asleep when I start talking....what on earth?!? Am I that boring that you can't engage in some listening time??? Out of frustration and feeling neglected our son called with his problems.....Oh BOY!!! He has HIGH ANXIETY issues that are beyond my "mom" role and out of my wheelhouse to fix. He must get to a Dr that can help him.....usually I am strong on the phone.....but, I lost it. I feel like running away.....LOL.
We do have an active senior center nearby and I thought about maybe seeing what they have to offer for me. If I could just do something once a week for an outlet maybe that would help me. Any suggestions?

Lois .... pay attention for a while on how you're turning and lifting. When turning you need to turn as a whole body and not from the waist only. For lifting be sure your knees are slightly bent and you can push up as you lift. After all the years of Nursing, it took me lifting DH to land me in 3 weeks of Physical Therapy with back issues. Once DH could not help me with his transferring from bed to chair and back, my back took the blunt.

There are so many ways Caregiving takes toll of the Giver. Yet, not much info is available for the Caregiver to get a hold of and use for themselves. Stay strong and use your experiences to grow wise and Love.

Interesting development......am guessing somehow while bending, twisting, lifting DH I have pulled or strained a muscle on my rib cage. Can't remember doing anything else it could be from. Extremely sore to the touch and/or movement. Not a pill taker.....but, did pop a Tylenol for the pain. Geez.....this is not good! Wonder how long this will take to heal??

An I would easily say he enjoyed that cake an ice cream. emoticon emoticon

Since I've been eating Paleo I've noticed a big drop in blood sugars an Short acting Insulin. Plus as a bonus, way more energy. I go back in October for follow up in Diabetes and Cardiac.

" In sickness and in health " ..... Caregiving, lends a whole new meaning to those words. I realized that indeed the true meaning begins to shine!

Have a great week and Be Safe!

yes, Michele.....we finally are getting it cleared up. Wow! When DH can't stand that is very difficult with the pressure sores. And, yes they suggested we try something like a diaper ointment called Flanders. Also, because his tummy is so large I discovered a bright red spot under the tummy in his groin area....holey cow! That shocked me. My friend (a retired nurse) said that is common with heavy patients and suggested using a jock itch ointment before the Flanders. Whew.....never dreamed I would be doing "nursing" stuff.
We just celebrated out 45th anniv. I thought to myself.....the vows in "sickness or in health" I was thinking.....broken arm.....flu.....something easy.....LOL...how naive of me......NEVER in a million years dealing with this!!
The blood sugar has been going well.....he's been very good, no cheating......until we went to GS birthday party yesterday and ate cake/ice cream.....YIKES

How's that pressure sore doing. DH had an air mattress which help some. Only other would be to keep pressure off that area. At times I used a balm, not sure of the name but, it was in a green can and farmers also used it on their milk cows otters. Sounds weird however, it worked.

Have any of you had to deal with pressure sores?? DH started getting a small one under his butt cheek about 2 months ago and just won't heal. Should I be alarmed?? They tell me the only way for it to heal is to get the pressure off it but how on earth when he has to sit all day on it.

Been there and fortunately got problem solved. Replaced the shower chair we had for a bench with part on the bench on the outside of the tub. DH used the bench when he showered and would slide to the end and move his legs over the side of the tunb. The wheelchair was placed in front facing the side of the tub and locked. Leaving me space to move if I needed to. It was only the last 3 weeks of his life that help was needed. That last week, he was bed bound.

Good luck making that slid board. They do come in handy!

Well, puzzled and disappointed. Was expecting DH blood sugar number to be much lower, but no different than previous mornings......not exceptionally high .....147....but was hoping less. The nurse told me sometimes you can do everything right but the numbers won't come down. Hope we can prove her wrong.

Our son the P.T. asked us to make a transfer slide board for DH to start using after he showers getting back into w/c. We are both handy with tools and like to build and make things. So, yesterday we began making the 36" transfer board. We're not done with it yet....needs many coats of varnish to make it slick and smooth. In meantime, DH took a shower to clean up. Oh gosh, got over heated and weak.....could NOT move!! I put the gait belt around him and tried to help him scoot back onto the shower seat to no avail. I kept wondering to myself.....how is this man going to use that transfer slide board??? All he had to do was slide his rear across the shower seat onto his w/c but he couldn't move an inch.
