When I read the DiVinci Code I was on a plane flying from PA to FL. DH had to tell me to get moving because I was so into the book that I didn't even realize we had landed!

I have the DVDs of The DaVinci Code and Angels an Demons and watch them at times when I work. So no, have not gotten back to reading it. From what I understand there is a third one in the making by Dan Brown as well.

I have been invited many times on FaceBook to play Candy Crush, but can not seem to get into it. At least right now. Just can not or perhaps have the time to get the hang of that game.
Have a great weekend!

So Michele...did you get back to the daVinci Code? I read that one a long, long time ago & really enjoyed it! I think I went on a kick of reading several books by the guy who wrote it.

I completely understand about the attention span not being there to read books post cancer. Mine comes & goes. right now, it's still gone. LOL! emoticon I want it to come back. My books miss me. They whisper to me sometimes. And the urge to BUY more books is always there too! emoticon

My new addiction is Candy Crush on Facecbook...do any of you play online games? That is my QotD!

I've not had the attention span to read a novel since 2011. Time has been spent taking care of hubby. Now with his diagnoses of Lung Cancer I have been reading up on Caring for the Cancer patient. Last week a found a magazine that the Treatment Center has on Cancer, exercise, nutrition and treatments. Its called "Cure". That has gradually been increasing my attention span to the point I believe I now can finish "The DaVinnci Code". So tomorrow, believe I will restart the novel.

In reading the previous posts, I like the way this thread has turned around. Good going!

I started another book last night, The Devil Wears Scrubs by Frieda McFadden; not much of a plot, but it's funny. I think fans of Scrubs or Grey's Anatomy would enjoy this book.

I used to read all the time but since I had my surgeries five years ago I can't seem to focus on anything long enough to read. Maybe a short story. My favorite magazine is this Old House. I love to look at how things are made or fixed.

I loved The Fault in Our Stars too, I felt the author really "got it" as far as what it's like to live with cancer. I'd like to see the movie too.

Right now I am reading Katie's Dream by Leisha Kelly; it's the 3rd book in a series about a family struggling to get by during the Great Depression, they are very good stories.

Thought I would "bump" this thread. I too read "The Fault in our Stars" & thought it was very, VERY good. I got my 15 year old son to read it & now he's hooked on the author, John Green! This makes me happy so definitely a win. :) I seem to be reading a lot of "young adult fiction" this summer, so maybe I'm re-living my youth.

So my QotD is what are you reading right now? If you're not currently reading anything what genre books do you prefer?

Magazines...I like All You, but actually do not like their articles. They are a bit too simplistic for me. But they are very budget conscious & I feel like we can ALL use those reminders. I also LOVE Better Homes & Gardens b/c I have BIG dreams!

I just posted a review this morning on my book team for "Blackberry Moon" www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_mes
sa
geboard_thread.asp?board=9830x13678xR>58205085

My favorite magazine I subscribe is Oprah; there's so much to read in each issue and it's full of helpful advice, it's hard to describe, but it's just different than your typical "women's magazine". I also love the book section in it every month, with the reviews of new books.

I get All You magazine too, and I love the coupons in it!

I also enjoy People and Entertainment Weekly; I have free subscriptions for those that I earned through doing surveys for E-Rewards.

I also get Cure, a magazine that is free for those with cancer or cancer survivors; I believe that one comes out 4-6 times per year.

Do you have a favorite magazine? Perhaps it is one you subscribe to for yourself. What is it you like about it?

As for mine:

I miss all of the scrapbooking magazines tat have stopped publication. Now Ladies Home Journal is going off the grid after over 130 years. I find that sad. For now I have finally found several that I really enjoy, Everyday with Rachael Ray and All You. Rachel's is because she has so many good recipes, many of them healthful. All You has some recipes, too. But mostly it has a variety of articles. It has lots of coupons that are big - $1.00 etc., and readers give tips on saving money doing things we do anyway.

Shari - It has been wonderful! Like one of the prosecutors mentioned lived near me and my mom taught his granddaughter. Things like that. I got it in Kindle as it is pricey in hardback, but the Kindle wasn't exactly a bargain. I'd like to hear more about Blackberry Moon. I've only heard good things about The Fault of our stars. I'll read a YA if the subject is one I rally enjoy.

Yesterday I finished The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, about two teens with cancer. Even though it's "young adult" book, it's a story that can be appreciated by adults too. I could really relate to many of their thoughts and feelings even though I am far from my own teen years.Of course, it was a tear-jerker, but at the same time, it is not what I would call a "down and depressing" story. Looking forward to seeing the movie.

Now I am reading Under a Blackberry Moon by Serena B. Miller; historical fiction set in Michigan (my home state) during the 1860's. Serena B. Miller is one of my favorite historical fiction authors.

Ev, that Jungle Inn book sounds good; that is cool that you had some personal connections to the book also.

What is the latest book you've read?

As for me, I read "Welcome to the Jungle Inn" by Allen May. It is non fiction of the mob in the Youngstown/Warren area where I grew up. My dad was a deputy in the late 40's and the sheriff he worked for is mention as is dad's partner. The book tells about the different mobsters involved with the Jungle Inn through the years. I enjoyed it as I knew places and lots of people mentioned.

As for this month I'm 1/2 way through a mystery called "Stolen Innocence" by Joe B. Parr. It is about human trafficking, a subject we need to become more aware of. He does so without preaching, by putting in info here an there. I'm really enjoying the book. He does use some swearing, but having been in Law Enforcement, I think he did better than detectives use.

I searched my bookshelves and found the book; the title is Rhett Butler's People by Donald McCaig.

the book your talking about Shari...I believe is " Scarlet " It had in the beginning of the book the stories of Rhett and Scarlet before the Civil War. Then the book goes to England where they met once again and back to the US. Enjoyed that book and have read it twice, although not recently

I can't remember the title, but a few years ago, there was a book that told Rhett's story, starting back before he had even met Scarlet. I enjoyed that book much more than I had expected too.

I also have a couple of books about the making of the movie.

The spin off of GWTW was "Scarlet" loved the book but, when the movie came out I could not get the interest going. Perhaps, because the actors where not the same.

Shari, I'm the same as you on DVD's. And if the price stays too high, I pass altogether. There too many affordable ones to worry about it or spend way too much.

Gone With the Wind is on of my favorite books and movies. It's classic and timeless.

My favorite out of all those is reading, although I watch a lot of TV too, (I have to admit, probably too much).

I do most of my reading at bedtime, but I always take a book or Kindle with me anytime I have to wait somewhere. I usually work on a craft, such as crocheting, while I watch TV, but sometimes if I am too tired for crafting, I will read instead. Not when the actual show is on, but during the commercials.

I don't get out to movies a lot; they are just too expensive, and it's more comfortable to watch them in my own home, but once in awhile it's fun to go to a matinee with some friends.
Most of the time when I watch a movie, I'll watch a DVD I already have at home. If there is a movie I really want to own, I wait til it's been out for awhile then I can get a used copy cheaper on Ebay.

Michele, I love Gone With the Wind too, both the book and the movie.

Just a small review of my interests as to now!

Do you have a favorite: read, watch TV, going to a movie?

We rarely go to a movie. can't even remember the last time we did. We watch most of movies from Netflix or DVD's we own. We do watch TV - mostly History, Discovery, and the food channel and food network. And we love NCIS I love to read and I can't remember when I didn't! I received a Kindle Fire HD for Mother's Day. It isn't the latest and was refurbished, but it does what I want it to, mostly download books I want to read.

Do you have special picnics planned for the next few months? - Those in the Northern Hemisphere. For those in the Southern Hemisphere - did you have special picnics, grilling out these past few months?

As for myself: Bob grills all year long, but we love being sure we have something special for summer holidays such as Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. Since I have gotten him into turkey meat rather than beef, I really enjoy the burgers and/or shrimp. Both are super when grilled. They also are good to keep me on program!! emoticon

I love to read, and to write book reviews for the books I read.
I enjoy watching TV and movies too; on the evenings when I am not too tired, I like working on my crafts, such as crocheting, while watching TV.

Going to the bowling alley with my Grandfather. I was either 2an 3/4 or 3 years old. Grandma really let him have it when we got home but Mom and Dad didn't say a thing. From then on we went once a week till I started school. Those were the good ole days.

I remember the first house I lived in, which was next to a lake. I was around 4-5 years old and an older cousin who was visiting was trying to teach me how to ice skate on that lake.

Education? ~ I wish I had more of it, & will continue to learn;)

Earliest memories~ around the age of 2 being in trouble, & made to play outside. The dog was treated better than I;)

Really young, & climbing around in old out buildings (barn, corn crib, chicken house) w/friends. too fun!!!

Around the age of 5 teaching my dog to climb trees with my daddy.

New Question

What is your earliest memory?

Mine are of when I was two or three and attended a private pre-school where my mother taught. The first I'm in a very large room with vey high ceilings. There is a man in a brown suit wearing glasses. e is a beautiful woman, too. She is wearing a lovely light green dress and I could tell she wasn't a teacher. At the same time period, I remember being in a cute sun suit like out fit that is whit with a red print. I have a white shirt under it with short puff sleeves
I am in a maroon colored wooden boat that rocks back and forth when the kids sitting on seats rock it somewhat like a teeter totter. Across the seats are bars for the kids to hang onto and keep their balance. There is a little boy with me for helping me row. I'm not sure, but it feels like he is my brother.

I think it does, in ways that I don't even think about from day to day.

New question:

Do you feel your education helps you in your daily life, not just your work life?

My own answer: I can't really say that it does other than reading instructions and food labels!
However, it probably does more than I realize. One thing's for sure, it helps whenever I play Trivia!

Shari, I had a similar situation in my 30's. It hurt so badly, the root canal was relief! I wondered why so many said it hurt when it brought me such relief!! I'm sure the one I'm having now is because of my teeth being so weak after radiation to my mouth. I go tomorrow to have all my teeth evaluated. I'm sure I'll have to have many more taken out because of them being so weak. But a specialist will have to do it and this evaluation is the first step.

Thank you for the suggestions, Mary. That is basically how I'm caring for it. It hasn't been so bad today, but we'll see. Around 8:30 - 9PM is when it usually gets really bad.

Just once, and it was years ago. It started suddenly. I hadn't been to a dentist in years at the time, because I was only in my 20's, and I didn't have health insurance at the time, and other than a couple of cavities as child, never had any problems with my teeth.

That one was awful though. I worked in a retail store at the time, and after it started, I bought a tube of Oral Gel and I think I used about half it during my shift. I was miserable, to the point of almost being in tears, but I had just started that job and I was afraid to ask to go home.

I went to dentist a friend recommended, and I was expecting to be bawled out for not going to a dentist for about 4-5 years. I got an appointment for the next morning, and oddly enough, my tooth quit hurting while I was in the waiting room; I think my anxiety level actually overrode the pain! Anyway, the dentist turned out to be so nice ( and I still go there, twice per year now), and I found out I had a nerve that died that was causing the pain. I went back later for a root canal, and the root canal really wasn't that bad.

Sometimes, my back teeth will ache because of my sinuses, and I have found that rubbing some clove oil or thieve's oil on them helps.

New question:

Have you ever had a bad tooth ache? What did you do to calm it?

My own answer: Ordinarily two Tylenol after a warm mouth rinse with water + Glyoxide does it for me. This one I have had for 5 days and no relief in site!

New Question:

Do you follow any traditions for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day?

My answer:
NYE We follow watching the countdown for the ball and kiss of course! Since we both have PTSD, we are uncomfortable with lots of people, so we usually stay at home, This will be my #3 snack today

NYD: We follow both family tradition of having some sort of pork and beans. We'll also multi task while watching football or movies.

That's why I like exercise. It helps me get out of my head. Plus it's great chance to pray. My prayers don't usually get answered right away. Yet when I pray day after day.... going up that long hill over time I can see an answer.

CAn you believe praying my way out of obesity was actually a blessing? I've walked my way out of '80 yr old 2 pack a day smoker's lungs'. (I don't even smoke!) Was I trying to get healthier lungs? No I was trying to lose wt.lol

While I was out there trying to lose wt yet actually clearing my lungs I was praying to have a better relationship w/my mom. Which actually happened gradually over a period of abt 3 yrs before she died. Talk abt a miracle.lol....... 2 very stubborn set in their ways old women actually making a change before she died.

I was also praying for one of my son-in-laws to become a better person. 3 yrs later, & 2 more daughters he actually has a steady job!

Anywho, I've managed to get past an inoperable antibiotic resistant infection, terrible lungs, C, & 9 surgeries while walking to lose wt, & praying to deal w/this large complicated family. So this obesity is a blessing in disquise:0/ I will get past all this post surgery crap. One day @ a time. One step @ a time. One prayer @ a time.

Hope this helps you.

Your online sis,
Mary

PS. I have a lot of motivation~ Hubby, & 5 grandkids who are 6 yrs apart in age!

Ev - trying something new every week is definitely something I can tackle, and it sounds like fun too! One of my goals is to "get out of my head" a bit, where I've been living for quite a while with all the medical stuff going on. New and out-of-the-ordinary activities will help me do that. emoticon

That's way my goals work better for me. This past year I made a challenge to try something new each week. It could be a food, an exercise - anything really. I discovered many new things with some good and some bad. I don't care if rhubarb ever passes my lips again. The DVD I bought that let me learn to belly dance was a good thing. I've really enjoyed that. I think you get the idea. The weeks followed the months, thus it starts on Wednesday and ends on Tuesday. What I'm trying to say to you is something like that can work in for you, too. The new thing that you do can be changed up if you are having a difficult week with your health issues. If you decide to do something like that, let me know and I'll pass on a list of ideas that my team members came up with along with me.

I am a planning freak by nature, and I do usually make some New Year's resolutions. For the past few years, it seems they've all been put aside because of illness, so this year I'm only making one resolution: to plan the work and work the plan, on a daily and weekly basis. I'm not looking forward further than one week, because everything tends to get spun around because of my health issues. It gets very discouraging; hopefully this will be a way around that.

Yes. But I've usually already started on them months or years before. IT's very similar to what you've posted. I tend to make resolutions all through the year:)

New question:

Do you make New Years resolutions?

My answer: No, I try to do something positive throughout the year instead. Last year was to try something new every week. It was fun and productive and I really enjoyed it.

I don't know if I have a favorite, but Christmas Vacation is probably the one I have seen the most.

Do you have a favorite Holiday movie? If you don't watch movies, how about a favorite holiday book?

My own answer: There are so many good ones, but I have several favorites that I watch every year at holiday time.

2. The Ref
3. Christmas With the Kranks
4. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
5. Trapped in Paradise
6. Donavan's Reef
7. Holiday
8. Grumpy Old Men
9. While You Were Sleeping

They are all comedies!! emoticon

Quite the opposite, in fact. Two of my nieces work in a luxury chocolate store, so I was gifted with assortments of chocolate truffles. A decadent morsel that I never pay for, and that was shared with others but I still ate too many!

New question: Were you gifted anything that could be considered "healthy"?

My answer: My brother and SIL sent us a wonderful package of Alaskan fish for grilling, including the spices. We have already had some grilled trout. I could handle a few bites which were quite tasty.

I had physical problems over the holidays also, but I enjoyed the time I spent with family and friends, and going to the candlelight service at church on Christmas Eve.
I am thankful my doctor allowed me to take this week off from chemo, I would have been feeling a lot worse if I had to have that this week.

New Question:

Was your holiday all you wanted it to be? Did you stay on track?

For myself, I really wasn't expecting anything and it's good, because I had a physically bad day, though the day itself was terrific! I kept on program, too!!

Northern Kentucky this year has been colder than previous years, therefore warmer weather is my favorite this year.

I am somewhat disabled because of my hip, (damage from the cancer), so I do not exercise outdoors anyway.

I'm in a 4-season area, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, and we have lots of snow right now. While my illnesses have prevented me from enjoying the winter in the past few years, I used to enjoy it a lot and look forward to doing so again. I used to work near the Rideau Canal, which turns into a skating rink in the winter. I used to skate the entire length and back every night, (total 15.6 km, or a bit over 9 miles) and absolutely loved it. There is one section that the walls are closer together, there are trees on both sides, and the ice stays colder and smoother. Absolutely glorious under a full moon.

The other thing I really look forward to taking up next year is cross-country skiing. There are miles and miles of trails not far from home.

New question for the weekend:

If you have cold and snow at his time of year, are you able to ad winter activities to your exercise? Or do you do better warmer weather?

My answer: When I grew up in the NE Ohio snow belt, I would have loved to have ice skated, sledded, etc., but with low temps, I couldn't handle staying out long. Since I moved to FL in 1991, I stay in for exercise when it gets too warm or we have storms or heavy rains.

Yes, I have written about both, here on Spark, and I have been keeping a hand written journal since I have been a teenager.

Have you journalled your Spark and/or your BC journeys?

For me - I have done both and am in the process of writing a book about them along with my tonsil cancer journey.

Shari, I think keeping one or two traditions is fine, but I love when families make their own.

Lannie, how fun that you still leave cookies for Santa! If I tried that, the 4 dogs would make them gone!
