Concerning the migraine side effect of the steroid injection:

I would be at the emergency room for about and hour and a half. The would give me narcotic pain relievers and monitor me. My blood pressure would shoot up during these episodes. The 1st time it happened I tried to wait out the migraine. After 4 hours with no letting up I went to the ER. I was always fine the next day, just a litttle off from the narcotic meds.

I am in a state that allows MM. This is what I use on a regular bases to keep chronic pain (Fibromialia) in check. emoticon I have not beeen able to take NSAIDS for about 10 years. I developed acid reflux and severe stomach pain when taking them. I lived in constant pain and depression, gain a lot of weight, until trying MM.

Hi Miller, I had arthroscopic surgery about 3 yrs ago when the doctor thought I had a torn meniscus. I did not have a tear and the surgery just aggravated the arthritis and a year later I had total knee replacement. Would have probably needed it anyway but I think I could have waited longer if we hadn't done the first surgery. Synvisc shots did not help me at all.

Cortisone shots in my spine have helped me a lot and I have not had any side effects whatsoever. I take lots of naproxen for pain/stiffness and so far no kidney problems. More than one doctor has told me to get off the NSAIDs, they would rather I take narcotic pain relievers I got at the pain clinic but they only last 4 hrs, do nothing for stiffness and can only be prescribed 30 days at a time. So many, many doctor apts. And they have side effects I don't like at all. Doesn't seem like a good route to take. It saddens me greatly that OA has no satisfactory remedies.

Sophie, the orthopedist wanted me to get a cortisone injection in my spine, but I didn't because I read on the preparation instructions that it could cause a permanent headache. May I ask - how long did your migraine last afterwards?

I would be willing to try it once in my spine with the possibility of a migraine, but not one that might never go away - that's just so scary!!

I have had a cortisone injection in my left knee. It helped. I have also have had cortisone injections in my neck for chronic pain. In both cases, the pain is due to arthritis. I don't get them anymore because I get a side effect of severe migraines within a few hours after receiving them. emoticon emoticon

I'm not sure yet. My insurance company had to approve the course of gel injections (I guess they're very expensive) and it's still being processed. Even if the gel injections don't help, I doubt that I'll have the total knee replacement right away, as I'm just not ready to go through another surgery and recovery right now. I'll just keep taking Advil and hope it doesn't hurt my kidneys.

I hope your knee improves with more time. Did you have physical therapy? And, if so, did it help at all?

I had the same surgery done on Feb 5 and my knee feels exactly as it did before. Well I guess its not buckling anymore but I am still in pain. The tightness and sharp pain and my knee actually gets hot, that is all still there. Doc sid give it another month and he will do injections. He said he would hate to give me a full knee replacement at my age. But said if the shots dont work then that's what he recommends. Sounds like we are in the same boat or hve the same doctor hahaha Are you getting a full replacement?

Thanks for answering, Kris. I went to doctor today and will have another MRI soon to rule out injury. They also want me to have some kind of gel-like injections in my knees before I have total knee replacement. They said the gel injections help some people and not others, but that it's worth a try.

Thanks again.

Hi Miller - I haven't heard of anyone, but obviously I guess it can happen. I think that you would be wise to go for total knee replacement. Then you won't be bothered with the ongoing pain.

My S/father had a total replacement when he was about 90 years old and it is going strong. At 96 he still goes for daily walks, MOST days, and it hasn't bothered him at all since his op.

HUGS,
Kris xxx

Has anyone on the team had arthroscopic knee surgery that failed or went horribly wrong and the doctor is blaming it on arthritis and now saying (just two months after surgery) to have a total knee replacement??
