By bad stuff, he meant fats, especially animal fat, salt (sooooo much salt), and refined sugar, as well as meat in every meal. In a hospital.

How sad! I am sure it was horrible to hear the negative stuff in the food. I hate to see the names of the items on food labels- I am not sure what the stuff.

My housemate worked in a hospital kitchen. A Seventh Day Adventist hospital kitchen.
He took notes of all the bad stuff that went in food.

I heard nightly refrains of “I had to deliver cheeseburgers to heart attack patients!”

Institutional food is crap. It’s salt, sugar and fat so “people will eat.”

When the hospital is setting tastebuds to restaurant levels of sodium, and lack of veggies, what hope do the patients have on their own?

I've not much money for restaurant dining but I do so love my candy. Deciding to have just a piece or two weekly. That will be a huge change!

I live in a continuing care retirement community so I have a meal a day "provided" for me that I can pick and choose what to eat and/or order something from the back of the menu if I don't like the choices so I work hard to get my vegetables in at that meal since I don't generally buy many vegetables as I don't care to cook/prepare them.

But having that "taken care of" does not necessarily make things easier for me, like I thought it would; I sometimes get up in the night (which is okay with me; I get good and enough sleep) but watching what I eat then and fitting it into my "next" day's food choices can be just as complicated as having to figure out all my meals. Sigh.

I agree about the restaurants. I eat the "healthy meal" and not only do I gain weight the next day but my hands are swollen when I wake up the next morning. I know they are trying to make the food taste good, but at what expense?? The food is more expensive and they are helping me to decide that I will eat at home before I go there and then just get a tea there.

It is never too late to become who you always wanted to be.

The main struggle is on the weekends. Eating out causes a small spike in my blood pressure on Monday, no matter how "healthy" I choose at the restaurant. I wish the restaurants were not loaded with sodium.

I have managed to do well during this season of sweets and parties. My blood pressure is 120/70 this morning and I have lost a couple of pounds. I even made candy yesterday and just had a very tiny taste. You have to see if it is worth giving away!

tonight will be a test. I am going to a party of good cooks who mainly like to bake.

I am taking homemade pimento cheese with jalapenos and serving with pita chips. Also beef sausage with bbq sauce. All the lowest sodium I could find.
I do plan to have fun!

Today was the last day for pest control visits. They must have moved out on Monday. None were trapped and we have not heard noise. This is guaranteed for a year against any type of rodent.

Went to Dr. today and lab reports were better than last time. Have a minor UTI, I kinda' thought that last week.

Moving things around tonight to fit a small tree. We have several and are using the small one this year.

I hope they can get rid of the squirrels for you. All my best to you always.

I don't even do the shatter proof ornaments and the youngest dog seems to like to chew up plastic or cloth stuff. And I really don't like the idea of not knowing how much of that stuff is ending up in her stomach. I worry about health issues for her with that type of stuff. We tried spraying bitter stuff you can buy on some stuff, but she seemed to like it and was trying to lick it off. I was constantly having to tell the bf's son to pick up his crayons and markers, toys and such so she couldn't get a hold of stuff. But every once in a while she still gets a hold of stuff. Especially if she gets in his room as he just throws a lot of stuff on his floor and doesn't keep it picked up.

Oh, my, rambunctious dogs!

I put shatter proof ornaments on my tree because of the kitties. They play with the low hanging ones and love to lay under the tree. I had rather have glass, but that is how it goes.

The pest control is here fixing holes in the attic and putting screens in vents, which there are many. He will set traps and come back the next two days to check the traps. Squirrels you have to catch and release here, they are considered wildlife. Rats, you can kill. Fine by me!

Dh got lights on the house, finished yesterday. Looks great. I will be doing the inside slowly this week. He got the boxes down for me to go through.

I did some stuff for work in the morning yesterday, then just rested and watched some movies later. Today I washed my work clothes, so I am all ready to go back to work tomorrow. Not planning on doing much today.

We don't do much decorating here for any holidays because of the dogs. We have one that you really can't trust with stuff like that. Both were chewers, but one gladly is more grown out of it than the other. They can both reach the counters and pull stuff off and destroy it. They like to counter and table surf and get into stuff that they shouldn't. We usually leave presents and stocking stored in the closets or way out of their reach until the last minute. We don't do a tree, tried it before and they just kept knocking the ornaments off or knocking the tree.

Have a great Sunday!

I feel better. This comes and goes. Not sure of the trigger.

Dh got the outside lights up. He goes all out. He will get the boxes down for the inside next weekend, so I can start the inside.

I played with my Cricut yesterday and made flowers out of cardstock. It is not as easy as it sounds. It will take some practice for me to get the hang of all this. Then I started a knit rug. It is made with a small peg thing that makes a long rope like chain. Something to do while sitting in front of the TV at night.

The bf still hasn't cooked our turkey yet. He is now saying that maybe he will do it tomorrow. His son hasn't come back yet. Not sure if he will tomorrow or not. We are just eating left overs and other food right now. And I am just enjoying being off of work.

Yes, I have totally enjoyed my time off of work. I just worked in the office Monday, then Tuesday I answered a few calls and emails for work, the I haven done anything for work the rest of the week.

Very rare for me to actually be off work and not have to do anything for work.

The bf's son decided to stay with his mom today. So we decided to just take some left overs in the refrigerator and make split pea soup with it for dinner tonight. Instead of making a big meal for just the two of us. We will do that when his son decides to come back over. The soup was good on a cold and rainy day.

I managed pretty well at the church Thanksgiving dinner. Half my plate was green beans (not the casserole) and salad. For dessert I had 4 bites only.

Yes, bad timing for lab work.

I am not sure what we are going to do for the holiday yet, not sure if the bf's son will spend any time with us or just stay at his mom's, or friend's, or go visit relatives on his mom's side of the family.

Sometimes when he doesn't plan on spending any time with us, we just treat it like any other day. And sometimes we will just have a nice meal by ourselves. Other times we accept invitations to pot lucks.

I will have three Thanksgiving meals. Tomorrow at church, Tues. at dh's office and Thanksgiving day. I have lab work this week too, so tomorrow, I will try to eat only turkey and veggies. Not a good time for lab work!

yes, I always look for the veggie trays and salad fixings first. Then take some of the leanest meat if it isn't too spicy looking. If it looks really spicy or greasy, I will skip it all together instead of ending up with heartburn later. I usually skip the potatoes unless it is sweet potatoes, I really like them. I go easy on rice and breads. And will take a small portion of what ever dessert is calling to me the most.

I agree. Eat mostly vegetables and small amounts of everything else. Raw veggie trays are usually around. Best wishes!

It is difficult. We have Thanksgiving dinner at church this Sunday and next Tuesday at dh's workplace. Then Thanksgiving day itself. 3 rich meals! I will eat turkey, no gravy, several bites of dressing and mashed potatoes and veggies. No rolls. Half my plate will be veggies. There is usually a salad for those who are into veggies. I am diabetic so will take a bite or two of dh's dessert.

You don't have to deprive yourself, if there is a nice dessert you want. Just watch your portions. Take a little bite of something Delicious that might be calling out to you, but just don't over do it.

Really pay attention to labels on foods to watch your sodium intake. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids to help flush out what is in your diet. Be prepared, make some healthy snacks packs for yourself to grab and go. Snack on some healthy veggies before going to parties so you won't be so hungry. And try to make healthier choices where ever you go.

My favorite store sells store brand canned tomatoes in all forms with no sodium, diced, stewed, sauce, and paste. Even a Ro-Tel type has no sodium. I use them all. We love our H-E-B grocery store here! I have seen the Red Gold too.

I made chili yesterday. Today we will eat the rest over tamales. I found some beef tamales in the store that have only 200 mg of sodium per 3 tamales! That was a find! They usually have much more, 700 and up. I also love it when I can find bean tamales, they are usually lower in sodium. I live in South central Texas, so we have tamales everywhere.

Thanks for the suggestion! I will definitely look into that. Today online I did find Red Gold’s No Salt Added Fresh Squeezed Tomato Juice. Hoping to see that at one of the stores listed but it may just be their other products that these stores sell.

I like to make chili this time of year but the tomato juice has too much sodium. I can find cans of tomatoes with no salt added but not juice.

I recommend anything written by Thomas Moore. He is the original DASH diet doctor.

I went to a nutritionist this week, who recommended an exchange diet pretty much like DASH, but with a few tweaks.

I just got a small hand out from my doctor on it, and then found some free info online on it too. But I know a lot of the people in this site and the other site for Dash were going from special books on it.

I had cut out a lot of dairy, breads and grains before my doctor suggested this diet. I had been losing before starting it. Then I started gaining on it as I added back in the dairy, breads and grains. I just played around with it to get where I was going back down.

Sometimes playing with the servings helps, sometimes exercising more or less helps, sometimes eating more or less helps. You need to keep changing up your exercise routine too as your body gets use to it and doesn't respond right to it. The going up or down in food helps because sometimes your body throws you into starvation mode. Just play around with it.

Sometimes when I did a lot of exercise and thought I would have a big loss, I stayed the same or even gained. Other times when I ate a lot and thought I would gain, I actually lost or stayed the same.

Good luck with it. Look in here in the old threads and you will see the books people said they were using and links to free stuff and other helpful tips.

I have been trying to learn more about the Dash diet since my doctor recommended it to both me and my DH. I am somewhat confused because I have found different versions which give me different servings for whole grains, nuts and sweets. I have have been gaining and losing the same 5 pounds every month. Is there a particular version this team uses and does anyone have recommendations for breaking this plateau?

I do not drink any soda anymore.. I used to love Pepsi..now I do not even like the taste.. I have Osteoporosis and I heard that the diet pepsi eats away at the calcium on your bones.. so i stopped.I drink iced tea and water..went to the dr's today and I had gained which I knew I did.. been under stress lately and been doing some wrong eating.. I don't want to undo all my hard work so that stops now.. back to the Dash regimen ..why do I do that to myself?

I have low kidney function, but not kidney stones. I get nauseous occasionally. Ginger ale helps. Sorry you had them!

I found out I am not eating enough protein for breakfast and not enough veggies throughout the day. The plan the nutritionist gave me is pretty much like DASH, with a few tweaks. I am going back October 31.

I am the same with soda, I had given it all up, and then recently when I was dealing with kidney stones I was so sick I couldn't keep anything down, not even the medicine they gave me to help me. So I had some of the bf's ginger ale to settle my stomach. After that several hours later, I was able to take my medicine and keep it down. But after those first few days I didn't have any again. I actually only drank two cans slowly during that time. It helped me so much, that I didn't mine drinking it again.

I try to purchase it for dh or he will and bring it home. It is hard to resist, but I will get the candy lowest in sugar and sodium that I can find. None of it is "low" in sugar, I just get the lowest. Always chocolate. Usually peanut M&M's. Then I can eat just a few and be satisfied with my chocolate craving!

I have not had soda in years excepts for an occasional ginger ale.

It is always in our house because the bf buys candy, chips, soda and all kinds of stuff constantly. I give into the chocolate sometimes, especially Reese's cups. I just try to keep that stuff to a minimum. I went cold turkey on soda, but not the other stuff. I just keep it in moderation and limit it. I don't buy it myself, but it is always here. If I tried to do them cold turkey, it would just make me want it more, or binge on it. So instead of depriving myself, I just limit it.

I am not surprised. My doctor told me that his friend in college was a cook for Chili's restaurant. He asked what was the main ingredient that he used. His answer: salt!

I get just the opposite, if I don't have enough potassium and calcium I get restless legs. Especially if I walked or stood a lot that day. If I take a pill or eat a banana it really helps me. Water helps me too.

Had too much potassium yesterday. I have to watch it. Had a bit of leg twitching last night. Could not sleep well. I choose the fruits with the lowest potassium. This was from potato salad, I believe.
