Adding an area on the food tracker for evening really opened my eyes!

It makes it obvious just how much I can pack away during that time period. emoticon

I am usually very vulnerable then because I am hungry, lonely, and tired . On some days I am angry, too----

HALT! (hungry, angry, lonely, tired)

Caregiving can make me feel pretty lonely and
feel like I am shouldering more than I can handle.

Great tips! I am going to start brushing my teeth after dinner, drinking tea when I want something to snack on & not really hungry and start a new category on the food tracker for evening munchies.
Also the exercising at night might get me off the couch plus I tend to not want anything to eat after exercising. This mindless snacking from about 9:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. must come to a stop! emoticon

Yesterday I had a big, yet small accomplishment. I tend to eat things just because they are there. I even eat things I don't even like if itís in front of me long enough.

There is a fast-food / Italian restaurant here that I love to go to for lunch, but their portions are huge. I usually end up eating the whole thing because it's there, they gave me it as a meal and I hate waste, but yesterday I decided ahead of time that I wasn't going to eat the whole thing. I decided it was big enough for two meals and I would divide it into 2 meals. So I divided the baked rigatoni in half and only ate half and one of the sides which leaves me the other half and the other side for lunch today. I'm so happy with myself.

I'm also proud of myself on a financial level. My husband is overly frugal....also known as stingy and he hates it when I go out to many times for lunch. So this was like going out for lunch twice, but only paying for it once.

That is another one of my issues - Eating out. For me it's such a pleasure that I can't avoid or resist. I love the change in atmosphere, the change in food variety, getting out of the house and enjoying something I don't have to prepare or clean up after. I enjoy those things a little too much some times though and don't watch portion sizes.

I thought I'd been doing good, until I stepped on the scales today and realized I haven't lost an ounce. I'm struggling to not give into the 'why bother if it doesn't work' mentality.

When you live in an RV full-time, it becomes really important. Especially living here in the Mississippi heat. We have two air conditioners running nearly all the time to keep in comfortable in here. I really don't like heat!

Chris,
Diabetics are usually low in magnesium so it is a good idea to take it as a supplement. You can also track it on the nutrition tracker to get some idea of whether you are getting enough. I track all the vitamins and minerals on there and have added potassium and B vit. supplements as a result.

We got our new awning today so that should make the inside of the motorhome cooler. I'm hoping that will help me to get back into some sort of exercise routine.

There is a way to know exactly what % of your calories are eaten late in the day.
On my nutrition tracker, I added a "meal" called "late evening snack." You can label it whatever you want.

On the whole day's summary there is a circle graph. Each "meal" is a certain color. Mine is purple. And if that purple wedge is too big, I know immediately.

You can add any "meals" you want: am snack, afternoon snack, evening snack, whatever.

I ran out of cinnamon capsules and had to make a trip to get some. They really help me stay awake in the afternoons. I am still awake! Yesterday I napped and then napped again. Cinnamon keeps my blood sugar level I think.

I did pretty well last night! Yeah! I had a steak 1/2 sandwich in bed BUT I did not have much for supper so my daily calorie count was fine. Later I had fresh blueberries--in the middle of the night--not good. I went grocery shopping to be ready when that "witching hour " hits. I'm ready for ya now! Celery sounds awful and "diety" but it is crunchy and has lots of water. I actually enjoy it--when I can force myself to actually have it ready.
I am not sleeping through the night. I bought magnesium but I can't find it right now. I noticed I sleep better when taking that. I started some minerals at night for severe leg cramps. And a knowledgeable friend steered me toward magnesium. Apparently it is quite an important mineral.

Everyone says to eat raw veggies and have them cut up and ready to go. I've had those baby carrots and celery in there and I can't get myself to eat them. The best thing I have found is air popped popcorn because it is crunchy and you can eat quite a bit of it. I don't dare have cookies in the house because I will eat them all. One thing that helps is eating lots of cooked veggies (which I love) at meals. Tonight I gave myself a manicure and pedicure...try eating while doing that hehe. So I made it thru one night successfully. I think going to bed earlier would help me a lot too. I better do that soon before I get the urge to snack!

Teri, You will laugh at me. Probably it was you who suggested to have bags of veggies cut up in the fridge. then when a snack was needed, it was "in your face" when you opened the door. I had planned to do that, but I know how weak I am. On my calendar on my computer, I made a date to "make veggie packages." I put it for 8:00 pm and I had it repeat every dingle day. Of course, I'd only be cutting up the veggies a couple of times a week, but I knew I had to remind myself often. I used to put up signs for stuff like this and I have been ignoring my own signs... Everytime I open the calendar, those reminders are there. If I look at a whole month, there is a reminder 30 times! Um.... in 3 months time, seeing that reminder often, I have not once cut up any veggies! At least the reminders made me buy the veggies to be cut up. I can't tell you how many packages of carrots, celery, purple cabbage, etc. that have rotted and been thrown away. That is sad, isn't it! I really needed to focus on my problem. Hence, this new team. If I am telling you people to change habits, I'd better be willing to do it, too. I have been on sparkpeople since 2008. I start good habits suggested by you and others, but then I go back to my old ways. I have lost almost no weight! It is this evening eating habit that holds me back. For many years I felt I was on the verge of breaking through. It has not happened yet. The best I did was losing 10 lbs. a year for 4 years in a row. Then hubby had a stroke. I have lost almost nothing since then. I will do this! Now, I am going to make some tea! Chris

I now will go make some new tea I bought. It is Chocolate Hazelnut decaf. A sparkfriend recommended it. I ordered it online. In fact I also ordered green tea in assorted flavors. Online , these packages came 6 or 8 to a "case." I gave some away to people who had been especially helpful to me this year at school. I have not even tasted them yet. Alas, I was too full in the evenings to want them. But tonight is different, right! I will be a good girl. Chris

I try to buy the 100 calorie snack things, I've tried to portion things in baggies and it works as long as it's my choice to make it work....if I "choose" to munch common sense is out the window. I'll eat a whole box of the "healhy 100 cal. snack packs", or I'll ignore "healthy" and go for junk!
Thank God for Sparks because I'm doing better these past years by starting my day with Sparks every day.
I have spun my wheels with weight but I think I'm heading in the right direction again with that! And I love that this team is here...just what I needed as I would like to QUIT taking food to bed! Bad habit started as a kid to munch while I read!

So many great ideas. I missed this forum before I said I would start a new forum for ideas maybe we will just keep them on here.
I don't do any crafty type stuff I like to relax and watch tv or read when I get home but like a few other people have mentioned. When I am tired I binge eat and bad choices. The smart thing to do would be to go to bed. Also when I am rushed I eat like I have time to eat when I have so many other things to do.
I know for me planning, planning planning I can't say it enough have the snacks measured and ready to grab. It does make a big difference.
Gotta run have a great day. Teri

I do counted cross-stitch and also have a couple of UFOs ( UnFinished Objects! LOL) in the drawers. But if I dig them out and do THAT instead of eating at night, I might finish them and have a couple of Christmas gifts to give! emoticon

@Debbie & Jessica: Thanks a lot for the tips. They are amazing! I'm trying to implement some of them as soon as possible!! (but I don't want to lock my mouth!! LOL )

@Chris: I haven't realized the huge effect from brushing my teeth before night overeating, but maybe it will help in long term? This brushing strategy seems to suit my logic, but haven't seen the real impacts.. Wow, nice to meet someone who loves cross-stitch as well! Don't worry, some of my ongoing projects also require years to complete, especially because I'm a very slow stitcher. By the way, how could I post picture here? There are only 'spell check', 'add a link', and 'add an emoticon'. Hey, you said that when you do cross-stitch, you don't want to eat because you don't want to spoil your works. Isn't that you are looking for? Why not try to relax doing some crafts, that's quite rewarding, I think? What stop you from doing crafts, then? Maybe we could try to discuss and think about some solutions..? And yeah, mend clothes is of course a better habit than eating chips in front of TV (which is a part of my habit).

CASSLE, taking care of my teeth could fill time in the evenings and who wants to waste those efforts by eating? Does this help you? I think I tried it once or twice. Now that I am more focused it could tip the tables to success. This is a great plan. If I set myself a time, like *:00 pm, to brush and floss, I just might stop my eating before bedtime. Yes, I read that in the Secrets, too.

Cros-stitching is something I do enjoy. Have you taken any photos of your work. You could post that here or on your sparkpage. Let us know you have new photos up.

I started a cross-stitch for my baby when I was pregnant. Um----I got a good start but did not actually finish it! My daughter is now 29 years old. emoticon

If I did that hobby, I would not want to touch food. I would not want to spoil my work.

thanks for giving me this idea.

My sister-in-law used to keep a basket og mending near "her" chair so she'd mend clothes in the evenings while watching TV. That would be a good habit for me, too. Chris

NIght time (or boredom eating) is a problem for me too...I've been using the following strategies to help combat it:
1. Night exercise--I personally have zero appetite after I'm done doing cardio, so when I feel the fridge calling me, I try to do at leat 20 minutes of "good" (i.e.--sweaty, out of breath) cardio so that the urge to graze passes.
2. Eat during the day--If I skip a meal or try to get by on 100-200 calories for a meal, I graze like a crazy person at night...so I make sure that I have satisfying (if low calorie) meals and snacks during the day.
3. "Save" calories for a snack--I want to be really clear about this...I make sure I eat every 2-3 hours during the day...I NEVER starve myself or skip meals. What I do is not "max out" my calorie expenditure for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or day time snacks. I try to focus on veggies for lunch and dinner, which can be very filling and low calorie, which gives me a little room in my calorie budget for my night time snack.
4. Go to bed!! --the more tired I am, the more I want to eat...not just eat, but eat the junkiest food I can find. So I make sure that I get 8 hours of sleep a night.
5. Plan the snack--have something on hand that you really enjoy AND has both carbs and protein in it, it's more satisfying. If you "look" for a snack at night, you're most likely going to come across the junk food, which always looks more appealing and you will try to go for first. If you have planned to have something like apples and peanut butter or maybe a Lean Pocket (250 calories...can be done if you budget!) before you go to bed, you will be more likely to eat that!!
6. Don't deny yourself that night time snack--I am losing weight (pretty easily) right now, following SP's logic that eating is eating...your body doesn't know what time of day it is. The "don't eat after 8PM" myth that so many people seem to like to reference seems to have to do more with preventing binge eating at night...which is dependent upon having the willpower to eat nothing after 8. I'm pretty sure most of us don't fall into this category, or we wouldn't be on SP. :) So have a reasonable snack BEFORE you get to the point where you're going to binge!

YES- Evening eating is still my largest struggle, especially when the rest of the family gets into munchy mode!

A few things that (sometimes) help:

1. Have healthy options...premeasured crunchies like veggies or grapes or nuts or a combination of all the above!

2. Drink a cup of herbal flavored tea

3. Declare kitchen CLOSED after a certain time of night

4. Go to BED - a lot of times I find myself eating at night because I am really tired and just to stubborn ( or nuts!) not to go to bed!

Hey Chris, have you tried to brush your teeth in the night (maybe before you do evening overeat)? I read it on Secrets of Success that it could help. I want to try but forgot to do it today.

And what's your hobby? Mine is cross-stitching and every night that the dinner time coming in between of my stitching time, I found out that I eat less because I want to go to my room again for stitching..! (That only works while holiday in my case. During non-holiday, usually I only allowed to do cross-stitch during weekends).

Right now I have mostly frustrations. emoticon
The solutions that seem to work for others have not yet worked for me. Maybe by focusing on this particular problem-evening eating--I can conquer this nemesis! I will do lots of praying about this, too. Starting this team is my tactic to help myself and hopefully help lots of others, too.

I have to be diligent about caring for myself. 100 DAYS OF WEIGHT LOSS is a great way for me to keep focused. Day 1 is July 1, 2017. Build habits to produce success. Most of these habits I have at least tried before but did not sustain. First habit: delay eating by using a timer.
