I am trying to bring some of the rocks out to the living room to share with others. I think maybe I should go to Dollar Store and buy some clear lidded containers to display them in.

I had so many dull colored rocks. I never thought I could "fake" the effect of water on them! Great idea.

Sis shops online and has the groceries delivered. I don't know if she has to tip the driver or not. Mom and Dad used to call our local store, place an order and have the groceries delivered. There was a $5.00 delivery charge for that at the time. Don't know if they still do that. The store has changed ownership many times. Hope you got your groceries.

ROCKS!!!!!! Yes, I am shouting. Mod Podge brushed on the rocks will make them all shiny pretty like in the creek. Several of the rocks I have picked up were too pretty to paint on after I prepped them. They just have gone in my numerous rock containers around the house.

I think I have painted close to 100 Halloweentown Rocks in the last couple weeks. I have one more batch to seal and then I will count and take a picture of all of them.

I tried to order groceries online. Theybag them and load them into the van. Much easier than me walking around that big store.

But...the website seemed all mixed up. Many things were listed as out of stock or could only be purchased while actually in the store. Huh? It was not like that before. Then it got worse.. The pages looked very strange. I finally quit. Maybe they were updating the website or something. I only chose half my order, or even less. Then I logged off. They don't charge me till I pick it up so I hope the list just sits there.

Like the Twilight Zone.... emoticon

I was chatting with an acquaintance about the Garden tours all through July here in the buffalo area. He told me he visited the creeks around here to get rocks for his garden. Gee, who would do that? Me, too! They do look best lying in the creek water however. The colors come out more.

I had a couple boxes of rose quartz and petrified wood and other finds that my mother blissfully gave to the neighborhood kids when I wasn't around. DH also gave away my collection of rocks that was in the fish tank. Luckily, I still have the thunder egg and Apache tears. I actually, have several bowls of rocks around the house. For awhile I purchased rocks at gift stores. Of course I can't identify where they came from now, but it doesn't matter. I never needed to know the names or location. Just how they looked and felt. Just finished another batch of Halloweentown rocks. I am on a roll.

That's a great story! I love it!

I can admit to having bought many many rocks in my lifetime. Let's see, there were the rock tumbling years. There were geodes (possible geodes, with the little hammer). Rocks on pretty much every vacation with the family as a kid (my mom called me nuts), I went through a blue rock phase. There were rocks for science teaching with my son. Rocks for landscaping. And I couldn't just pick up a sack at a hardware store, NO! I went to a quarry and hand-picked some beautiful pink granite blocks to line my flower beds. That was back east. So far, here, I've only bought hardware store sacks of river rocks in various colors, to create a custom blend.

Don't even get me started on the picking up of rocks on hikes, beaches, and even on playgrounds. If it's pretty, it came home with me! Unless there were signs posted saying not to disturb the natural stuff or take it home. I respect those.

When teaching my son, there was a story about a girl who collected rocks. We spent more time on that story than was probably necessary, (eye roll at self)

Once, I made a train trip to Baltimore from Hartford, CT. I bought rocks! (science teacher convention) I carried my suitcase. Heavy but manageable. When I arrived home, my husband met me. I could not. Could not, lift the suitcase. He said, "What's in her, rocks?"

some were geodes, some were crystals

I do understand the love of rocks!

That's another thing we have in common. Rock freaks. To think a rock is too pretty to paint, that sounds like me! When I was a kid, I was certain I was going to be a geologist (at least for a while).

Got my first bucket of rocks from the city. Two of them are so pretty, I can't paint them. I will just swap the twenty rocks I have already painted that came from my own yard and call it even.

1000 rocks! That's a lot!

I won't be around much for a few days. ComicCon started yesterday, and doesn't end until Sun PM. I'll be mostly doing that. But I hope to visit again Monday. And maybe at nights I'll find a minute here or there.

Thank you. Loved my sister with all my heart and still do. Watching what she went through probably saved me from myself. I was a bit of a dare devil at times. But I got it that drugs and alcohol can ruin not only your own life but those around you.

Chris really happy your daughter is doing so well. Part time jobs are good for the soul. Glad she found one that works for her physically and emotionally.

So, I have another new job. too. The city Halloweentown coordinator offered to pay me $15.00 an hour for painting rocks to hide about town during the celebration in October. I don't think she has a clue how long it takes. I am still debating. What I want to do is have them furnish the rocks and reimburse me for paint and sealer and then donate the rest to the children's program at the library. We shall see. I have already started painting. Wonder if I can churn out a thousand of them. I should put everyone around me to work too. LOL It will be fun.

That's really awesome, Chris! (And not just because I love Wegmans and wish they'd come to CA. LOL) Seriously, though, that's a great step! And, according to a family member of mine who has been sober for 20+ years now, having an early morning obligation is really good to help stay sober. What nice news!

Our daughter (a recovering alcoholic) has a new job --baking bread at Wegman's. Apparently the store supports many good , healthy philosophies! She is very proud of the place she is working. Now only 5 hours per day. If this works out she might increase the hours. But 5:00am to 1:00 pm. She has health issues like myofacial pain syndrome and fibromyalgia. It has been a long road for her. I am very proud how she is tackling her problems!

Wow, Chris! You're out there kicking some serious butt! Maybe you can find an osteopath like Cathy's, they are more interested in alternative med. But huge emoticon on your BP improvement!! Nice!

Cathy, I'm sorry about your sister. It's good you've learned from her, but what a sad thing. Nice of you to have helped that friend!

My BP went down at the regular doc visit! Both of us were surprised. He supported me taking less depression medicine. My apt for the psych doc is the 18th. I moved so much recently that the doctor who used to prescribe my depression medicine is not at all the doctor I have now.

I find I have to tell doctors what to do rather than them leading me!

I am actively looking for a doctor who believes in "food is medicine." The guy I have now is not interested in this at all.

I have been (finally!) getting to the "Y" to exercise. I am just using the recumbent bike right now to improve leg circulation. That pain daily keeps me from accomplishing much. Walking, of course, is good exercise but fatigue and leg pain keep me from doing that. On the bike first I did 2 mi in 20 min. Four times late I have improved to 3 miles in almost the same amount of time. Whoo! Whoo!

I am getting more done in a day and even got out to walk around 2 garden tours here near Buffalo. They have over 500 gardens listed to visit! I will post some of those photos on my blog.

I hope I can keep improving. Not having hubby at home is really helping me put time in for my own care. emoticon

My middle sister died in a car accident in the 80s due to pills. She loved her pills. She took pills to keep her awake and some to make her sleep and then pain pills. She had several different pharmacies and physicians. She was making a decision to do this on purpose and I miss her forever, but she helped me......another friend/acquaintance that I saw once a year during the fourth of July showed up in her wheelchair stoned out of her mind. Her very young caregiver was worried and wondering if she needed to go to the doctor. Having had a little experience with this I asked the see the pills. The GP, the cardiac specialist and the diabetic specialist had all prescribed different narcotics and opiods for her to take on a regular schedule rather than as needed. And of course the young caregiver was doling them out as prescribed. I asked if they didn't share with each doctor the medication list. Hadn't occurred to any of them. I told the girl to call the GP on Monday and give him a list of all the medications. I heard later that a little medication editing and the friend was like a new person. So grateful the HMOs have a medication database now. They could have accidentally killed her. She did die a few years later due to cardiac/diabetes complications, but at least it wasn't an overdose because of innocent trusting of doctors.

Crying is so very healing. Although not a good idea at work. Luckily, we are retired and can grieve as needed.

Ah meds...does some good, throws other stuff out of whack. What I dislike most is when you get a prescription for something, and then they just send you on your way, no talk of revisiting if you're ready to taper, or can jettison them.

Your crying jags, Chris, may have been in large part to how hard your life as a sole caregiver was! Stacked meds might have been necessary for a bit, but it seems crazy they didn't revisit it later. But it is what most of my experience with doctors is like as well.

Lately, I ask docs as soon as the Rx pad comes out onto the desk: Ok, when do I STOP taking these? Is it ok if I taper them myself? Etc. Because they really do just slap that paper in my hand and send me on my way, never to be seen again (pun intended).

What can I do for myself today?

Always fun to go through all the boxes of stuff. I still have a few in the garage, that need purging of items I haven't seen in years, but enjoy none the less every time I go through them. Usually what happens is I get rid of a few things and consolidate the tubs. I can't read Mom's steno books, so they went a few years ago also the old medical bills.

Chris, Do we have a July, August, September chat thread? I need to look, but didn't want to lose my post.

I am still chipping away at clutter. It is decreasing --very slowly. I had my storage unit stuff brought to the garage here at the new condo. That is a big deal. No more payments for storing things!

Now it is like Christmas, seeing what stuff I had stored! emoticon

Well, I got to my appointment to reduce my depression meds. It had been cancelled. I missed the 2 messages. I am very bad at getting my messages! So I do this coming Tuesday. 1:00 in the afternoon. And it will be done remotely--using a TV screen. The dr. will be in Texas. emoticon

If I did not take that appt. I'd be waiting another 2 months!

Loretta, Welcome to the team. I was diagnosed with CFS about ten years ago. Found that getting off some of the meds helped. Will never give up my thyroid medication or vitamin D. I had to ditch the statins. They were horrible. Doing a whole food program as the trade off for not taking the statins. I was diagnosed with coronary artery disease in May. The doctor said and from my research that if I embrace the whole foods, I can 100% reverse the plaque. The statins only decrease my chances of a stroke by 12%. I strongly believe in researching each and every drug thoroughly. My friend has a pacemaker. Probably due to long term use of a blood pressure medication that made her feel bad for years. It also may have increased her gout issues too. Her doctor verified this when I asked him after doing some research for her. Please, please research your meds. Some are miracles some are not.

Loretta, welcome! I have many issues the same as you have. What a life long battle. I am thankful for sparkpeople. I joined over 10 years ago and I am here almost daily (except for certain periods).

If I could not interact with people here, I know I would be much worse off. chris

Hi - I don't know if I introduced myself to everyone, so here goes. I live in Westbrook, ME with my cat, Tiger. I have been battling weight issues all my life, but it is more important than ever for me to lose weight. I was just diagnosed with Afib. I better lose weight before I lose my life. I also have other health issues as well, including thyroid dysfunction. As of now I take 15 meds a day. So I know about being very tired and falling asleep in the afternoon. I sometimes sleep 16 hrs a day. And like you I have a hard time doing my chores. I also just drag around, not being able to do my chores or finish doing them. Shortness of breath does not help the situation. I am hoping losing this weight will help the situation.

All my life I have been tired and sleepy. Lately--maybe I have found the current reason. Over medicated.

I already made an apt with someone to help me with this. A psychiatrist. My own doctor is useless. He just tells me to lose weight. I have been there-at normal weight. I was still tired.

But my life has changed. Way less stress than most of my life. I tried myself taking less Welbutrin. Lo and behold I did not fall asleep in the late afternoon-for 2 hours --as has been happening.

I am on sertraline, too. It was added years ago when the welbutrin did not stop my crying jags.

It has been so frustrating to not get my chores done. Day after day just dragging around.

Hopefully, this will help.

chris

My husband DEFINITELY needs intense physical movement to stay calm. When he's gone a while without a bike ride, run, or some other intense cardio, he's a different person. And so I always encourage those things for him, just so he's calmer and better able to handle our son with me. So why can't I consistently prioritize that for myself? Who "effing" knows. LOL

What can I do for myself today?

Praying that your son understands the consequences of his actions and does not get himself kicked out of his program. It does sound like it is good.

I have to share this funny. Sitting in the back yard, I could hear children screaming and playing in park.

First Child: Where is __________
First Child: WHERE IS__________
First Child: WHERE IS _____________!!!!!!!!
Second Child: I DON'T EFFING KNOW!!!!!!!!!!
Mother: DON"T EFFING TALK LIKE THAT!!!!!!!!

Neither censored themselves. As my granddaughter put it. Kind of like: Stop being violent or I am going to kick you in the backside.

I had to laugh. I think they worked it out, but he is never going to change his language. The park is so much fun.

I must say though that if that had been me and my kids they would have pointed out my own language to me. Neither were are very afraid to tell me how it is.

I was screaming at my son one morning about something he didn't do and he politely told.me: "You don't have to yell. I am not like my sister. I listen." I felt about two inches high. He was and is such a smart and calm person. One of his strategies for remaining calm is to run or bike. He pretty much stays moving and active. It releases endorphins. I should think about that. I stay moving to keep my blood circulating, But I haven't been able to really push it for months now.

Yesterday was mostly in bed. Doing a little better today, but not like Wednesday.

Thank you, yes, it was quite coherent!

I'd LOVE to find a 1:1 male peer/young adult to come over weekly. I tried for many many many years to find something like that. We've tried a few options, but they never worked out more than once.

His 2x/week program does pair him with a college aged buddy which is pretty close to his age now. And some days are good, but some aren't. That's the program I am worried he's going to get kicked out of.

What can I do for myself today?

Wow, I love that.

I am having a lot of trouble with being woozy and struggling with memory since the hospital stay. Some of my posts reflect that. I think that last one though is coherent. Hope to get this figured out soon.

Oh! I just remembered my dream from last night. Something has changed drastically emoticon --and for the good:

I dreamt my whole class loved me and were praising me and giving me drawings, etc.

Always before my dreams of my classroom were more like out of control nightmares. emoticon

I love this. In fact I hope you are journaling all you are doing. That is one way to focus your writing and to help you think about your choices and decisions.

DHS is Department of Human Services. Probably an Oregon name.

You are most definitely right about behavior imitation. I have another story for you. LOL. I received the younger sibling of a profoundly autistic child in my class the first year I taught. They lived in the country and her only playmate was her older sister. She came in showing all the classic signs of ASD but within two weeks they were completely gone and she was one happy camper playing with the other children. It did not take her long to revise her behavior in different company. I kept her as long as I could then got her into Head Start. She has done quite well. Another family I stayed in touch with for over 20 years.

Anyway, yes, public school could be wonderful or awful. Depends on teacher and make up of classroom. Several observations could be helpful and consults with the teacher.

First thought though that came to mind is that he might really benefit from having a young adult male as a "big brother" come to visit him a couple hours a week. Someone that could be a really good role model and know how to physically protect himself AND not react. Just go home. "Oh I see you don't feel like having company today. I will be back next week." This could also be on social story cards. I love social story cards even for my verbal students because they can keep referring back to them. Action, solution, action, consequence. These can be done in pictures too. All of mine were since I worked with preschoolers. We used them daily to help remind them when they were feeling good what the consequences of good behavior is and what happens when they melt down. (Usually, they miss out on fun activities because they are on floor kicking) Nothing punitive, just more of an awareness.

Thank you for letting me ramble on about this and not thinking I am trying to be a busy body. I loved my job and was quite sad when I got sick and had to retire. Just this little bit of interaction with you has made me so happy. AND as I tell my children, I will never stop dishing out advice, but they don't have to take it. They need to weigh every angle and make their own decisions. My job is to just get them to think outside the box.

HUGS

What's DHS?

Yes, thing is, every year I reconsider a more traditional school setting for my son. And every year I end up deciding against it. The funny thing is, I almost never recommend homeschooling to people. It's really just something that works for my son. But recently I thought maybe he'd benefit from the transition programs they have for teens and/or some anger management training.

However, as he struggles more and more to be around other people, I realize that maybe this really isn't his best choice. At least not right now (I say that about everything b/c I don't rule out things that may help in the future). Sometimes I wish we had our own Anne Sullivan here in the home, but then I realize I'd be butting in all the time telling her how to do everything. We have had in-home ABA services (and other kinds when he was younger) and might be about to do RDI again in the Fall.

I had recently been looking for an opportunity for him to experience more out in the world (in a structured program), but the truth is, he is riding a line right now with the 2 day a week activity he goes to now. There's a possibility he'll get kicked out if his behavior doesn't improve at least enough that he's not scaring all the other kids, requiring 2 personnel to handle him, and punching holes in their walls.

And if we put him in a placement with other violent kids, in an anger management setting, well, he'd just be surrounded with other kids who escalate regularly, and that's not good. He's so easily influenced. In fact, I believe he learned how to have a violent meltdown by watching another kid in this program. He had never done it prior to meeting that child/young adult. But then again, it could be mostly just hormones. Grr. Hormones.

Sometimes I wonder if he'd settle down if I took him out of the program, but he loves it so much and it's my only break. And he HAS to learn how to cooperate with people other than me! It can't be only me. I'm going to die one day.

And yes, I do plan to look at options for his living arrangements after we die. But in CA there is a program run by the state, that offers Regional Center help to put special needs adults in the least restrictive living environment. It's pretty fantastic. It ranges from living alone w/someone coming in weekly to check that things are getting cleaned, purchased, bills paid, etc., to daily checks, to roommate living with special needs peers and a resident overseer (not sure the term).

Ok, this post is more like a novel. I'd better quit. LOL (see, there it is, the pervasive LOL)

Thank you. Each day gets a little better. I went to TOPS tonight. Had to lay down when I got home, but 20 minutes was enough of a nap to feel productive again.

Regular jobs, marriages and kids alter our choices. Had a parent ask me once if she should send her son with Down Syndrome to school or home school him to guarantee a good education. She was very smart and could have done it quite well. Choices I told her. Do we send our kids to swim lessons or horse back riding lessons? There are benefits in both. He is an adult now. She home schooled a couple years and then started him regular school so he could also get the socialization. Went to the prom with another beautiful girl with Down Syndrome. They were such a cute couple. He is an adult now and won the gold in swimming at the regional Special Olympics. So happy for both him and his mother.

It is good that you understand that you choose this and even though you are tired, there is also much joy and goodness each time you find a success.

My GDs best friend is a paid caregiver for his brother who is about 17 extremely autistic and volatile. I know there were times when he about unhinged. Pretty young for such responsibility. But DHS keeps sending him to trainings and he is learning some mad skills. The pay is good too. His advantage is that he is over six feet tall and works out at the gym. His size commands respect.

Wow, glad you're home! Sounds like a scary visit.

I, too, love Picard!

As far as finding time to write, I always try to tell myself that my brain is so friend right now anyway, that even if I made regular time to write, it would come out all mushy and blobby. And I've been typing on social media for such a long time, I think my ability to convey feelings, without adding LOL or IMO or whatever else I tend to use, is just gone.

Add to that the amount of time per day that my feelings are in a box somewhere, and I'm not sure I could write anything with any kind of passion at this point. It's ok though. It's like having loved and lost. You treasure the memories of the time you did love (write) and know that maybe someday it'll return in one form or other.

I love Picard. He was my hero. Flawed, yet endearing.

Also, a lot of the young adult group home people I worked with were thrilled to be out on their own. It almost got too intense with the parenting at home. At the group home the parent could just dote on them, they loved it. You have many years till you get there, but making sure your child has a safe place to be or a back up plan before you get sick is vital.

Speaking of sick or possibly a segue, I am home from the hospital. Chest pains stopped by nitro. Followed by wonky EKG and stress test. Sent to another hospital. Angiogram showed a little plaque. Sent home with statins. Still don't know what caused the problem, but wondering if the fall I had jarred some plaque loose and caused a little clot. I will ask the doctor.

Buds is barking so need to let him out.

Sounds like a budding writer who is kind of stuck. I know. I know. Raising an autistic child-or any kind of caregiving where you are the one who does 99 1/2 % of the work takes our physical and emotional energy. It is very hard to do anything major for ourselves.

How much time do you think you might be able to devote to writing? With that idea in your mind maybe it is doable! I hope so. You have so much done already! I am very impressed.

Also the thought of trying to be perfect can cripple a person. I mean writing the "perfect" article or book.

Good luck. "Make it so," comes to mind.

I write lit fic. Shorts. I studied in college (late in life) and was fortunate to study under some good writers. Richard Bausch and Stephen Goodwin, mostly. But never got my MFA because of parenthood. I was going to get it when my kiddo went to school, but he ended up being autistic, so I decided my path lay elsewhere.

I have two polished shorts, but they're never finished, LOL. One is basically about a guy in rural MS who yearns for a different path than what's expected of him, but doesn't even realize it himself at first. This one placed in the top 1% of a writing contest sponsored by Writer's Market, I believe (ages ago, so I can't even totally remember who sponsored it). And the other is about a married woman who is having a dalliance at work that ends up going too far. I've got others, but they're not polished.

And I've got probably close to a hundred fragments.

I have a romance novel I wrote to try to earn money, but in the end, I decided to not publish it. I didn't want my first offering to be that. I got some interest in it from one of the romance publishing houses, but that was so very long ago - early 1990s. Publishing is so different now. It all works so differently.

BUT I haven't been able to dedicate any time to writing in ages. Even when I dash off something, I know it will sit in a file and never really get looked at again. There IS no retirement from special needs parenting, after all.

So you see, my admiration of you going to a writer's retreat comes from a rich writing past, but alas, not current.

I think gallo pinto means chicken beans. It is a staple of Central American diet. GD loved it in Nicaragua and continues to make it weekly at home. The base is sauteed onions with rice and beans mixed together. She said they usually diced tomatoes into it too and then added chili powder and cumin. This would be served with a little side of chicken if they had it and a fruit or other vegetable from the yard. GD puts Rotel in her mixture. It is filling and I find it easy to eat several meals in a row without getting bored. It is also filling.

I think the time for my long grain rice was seven minutes.

The writer's retreat is so cool. We are staying at the Colony House in Rockaway. Our host told us that Jean Auel (Clan of Cave Bears) purchased it for the Oregon Writer's Colony, specifically for what we are using it for. I am already advocating to make this an annual event. I drove here with my best friend and my ex-sister-in-law. (I didn't divorce her). They both write because they feel the need to. I dabble in all kinds of things and don't feel compelled to write, but want to be totally supportive of them. So my project here is to move my story into Novel Factory and see if I can actually find a story arc. I have several first drafts of stories. Would love to actually finish one. The one I am working on is about a couple traveling cross country in an RV. Trying to make the events and weather match the disaster that their marriage is becoming.

Another story I have a draft of that also does not have a cohesive middle is based on the 1930s dustbowl and what my Dad experienced moving his mom and younger siblings to Oregon. I also want to write "Recipe's For Living" for my grandchildren. Basically, a cookbook of family recipes, stories about my mom and dad and the wisdoms they imparted to me. I have two teacher themed stories I started.

Anyway, I love writers and all the writing workshops, guilds, NaNo, so I keep puttering along, just to be part of the group. I have also learned to be a more discerning reader.

Do you have a NaNo group in your area? I find the camps to be fun. You can choose your word count, so I usually do 5000 words. That requires less than ten minutes a day of writing. Also more libraries are hosting writer's groups.

What do you like to write or want to write when you have the time?

Cathy, what's gallo pinto?
How long does rice take in the instant pot? I keep seeing them advertised, but have no idea what the benefits are of having one.

Air fryers - I have one, but rarely use it. It's too much work to clean it, LOL. For crispy finger foods, if you still eat potatoes (white or sweet) or tortillas, there's a cool microwave crisper thing. Basically you cut things thin, stand them up in the crisper, and microwave. After they come out, they crisp up even more (so wait a little bit before eating). This lets you have the crisp crunch without the oil. Just look up microwave potato chip maker.

Also, Cathy, I'm SO jealous you get to go to a writer's retreat. I've always wanted to do that!! In fact, at one point I wanted to buy a big house in a remote location and host them. But then, I had a special needs son. My life shifted in ways I never could have imagined. I rarely write anymore. Someday I'll get back to it. And maybe I'll even hit a retreat.

And sorry the detailing thing didn't work out. It's stressful to have to hold people to their contracts when they don't do their jobs right. I hope you will come to a place of peace about it and leave it behind. Or...write about it, LOL. Maybe you can write it right.

This is the air fryer I got. The air fryer and instapot were part of a bonus I was given at work. We have a smaller plastic air fryer at work and not impressed. I love this metal bigger one and it makes lovely fries, does wonderful things with fish and kale too. I have used it every day for something. I have only tried out the instapot once on the rice. Looking forward to experimenting more with it. Wonder how it would work for cooking dried beans.

Heading to beach for writer's retreat. Should be fun. Weather is perfect. Bud's is trying to pack himself in my suitcase. He just got my shoe and is coveting it. I think he knows he is staying with GD. He is a tad sulky. Only gone till Sunday.

Had a bad experience with the interior detailing I got on the car and consequently ate until I made myself sick last night. Need to get out of that anxiety pit. It is only money and maybe these people will have learned a lesson. I did take it back to them and have pictures of everything they didn't do for $200. Not sure if I am going to post a review or not. I don't want to start a war, but I do want them to own up.

Hi Cathy!

Love rice. Eat it almost every day unless we're having pasta. Cathy, what do you like about the insta pot and what brand did you get? I don't cook with oil and miss french fries and crunchy finger foods. Been eyeing air fryers but the negative reviews scare me off. Anyone here have good experiences using an air fryer?

Tonight it's leftovers but I'm going to make a green smoothie later. Usually have one every day but been lazy lately. .

Creating a new normal with gratitude and grace.

Hi Ella, Glad you joined us.

The pot of black eyed peas and veggies sounds delicious. I made my first pot of rice in the insta pot yesterday. I added a little to my mostly veggie soup, but set the rest aside for my granddaughter to use with her gallo pinto she likes to make. I have trouble with cravings when I eat rice. I did get her off the instant rice to the Jasmine rice. Will have to explore adding some wild rice to the mix or at least some whole grain rice.

Hi everyone, new here and a little about my journey. After my pregnancy went from 120 lbs to 213. Starved myself to lose weight (didn't know any better) and lost 101 lbs in 5 months. Kept it off 5 years but not without learning bad eating habits. After constant binging over the weekends and starving over the week, afforded me a regain of 60 lbs. After that I went up and down with my weight. Lost 50 lbs twice w/atkins, 40 and 30 w/south beach, 30 w/a vegetarian diet and six years ago 70 via exercising w/a vegetarian diet. Kept it off for two years but old eating habits die hard and here I am trying to lose 55 lbs.

Over the years, I've learned that there is NOTHING wrong with us and NOT our fault for eating unhealthy foods. Food manufacturers spend millions to keep us desiring and craving the most unhealthiest foods in the world and it's working. Resisting or practicing moderation with those kinds of foods when it's in my environment is a losing battle. I've resolved to keeping healthier options on hand but even with that, I still eat more of those than I care to admit but it's a learning process that I'm getting better at.

Made a pot of black eyed peas w/eggplant, spinach, mushrooms, onions, ginger and salt to taste. It was good over brown rice.

Creating a new normal with gratitude and grace.

Thank you sharing that about having conversations with yourself. Sometimes I feel as if several different people are living in me. Mostly, I am friends with everyone except Anxiety and Rebelliousness. What was that movie? Ah yes...Inside Out by Pixar. My niece once said she thought our problem was that we were both the babies in the family and were indulged, so we continue indulging ourselves, when what we need to do is to treat ourselves in the same healthy way we care our children.

Anyway, I bought the greens for juicing, so need to do that today, buy eggs for GD, walk Buds, and start packing for the weekend retreat.

I think I just need to get back to telling myself I'm being utterly ridiculous for using food as my entertainment. And get back to a matter of fact attitude about what I AM supposed to be doing. I get upset with my son for not doing what he's told. Well, I'm doing the same darn thing. I'm telling myself how to take care of me, and then not doing it. Who, exactly, am I being the rebellious teenager against? My inner critic? My sensible mom-self? I don't know. But I'm starting to get mad at myself for it. Maybe that's what's necessary before I put ALL the weight back on.

I am going to weigh now. I know it's going to be bad b/c I'm having nerve impingement tingles, morning headaches, sweating, and those were gone when I had lost the 15lb. (In case I've never mentioned it here, it's Thoracic Outlet Syndrome due to my extra cervical ribs)

What can I do for myself today?

I have to be diligent about caring for myself. 100 DAYS OF WEIGHT LOSS is a great way for me to keep focused. Day 1 is July 1, 2017. Build habits to produce success. Most of these habits I have at least tried before but did not sustain. First habit: delay eating by using a timer.

I was eating lots of veggies but not now. Darn. I was buying produce and making the main salad ahead for a few days. The last batch of spinach I bought went to waste. I could not seem to get the salads made.

So I guess I am sabotaging myself-yet again. Darn.

I seem to be in a physical depression at the moment too. Mind, heart and spirit seem to be in right places, but I just feel drained. Of course I had pizza with family yesterday. Maybe too much wheat again.

I have staple food for when I don't want to cook, which includes prepackaged salads that I add cooked or canned fish or chicken, my one pot soups, sandwiches, eggs and oatmeal and my protein and produce slushies. When I get in moods to cook, I like to try new recipes. I prefer cooking in the fall and winter. More into gardening and yard work in the spring. Although am having lots of fun with the air fryer.

I think I have to also go back to the "do one thing" mentality. If I plan to cook one thing, I always end up adding ingredients (usually vegs) one at a time until I have something really healthy.

But I think my bigger problem is the stack-up of pans to wash. I need to tackle that daily, not every other day like I have been. Messy kitchen doesn't make me want to cook.

Try something really simple. My cooking usually has 2 or 3 ingredients. And actually I am now cooking almost daily. This is very new to me! chris

Each time we readjust we are getting one step closer to healthier. Just made a big pot of soup. It is decent. The wilted asparagus probably should have been tossed or maybe just used the tops. Everything else is delicious, thank goodness.

I actually bought a box of spaghetti the other day. Bad girl! I need to find my spiralizer and use it as spaghetti. Much healthier! There is even a supermarket here that sells veggies all spiralized. I have never bought those but I t would be a really easy way to do this. Hm... instead of the box of spaghetti I could walk over to the veggie area! OK for next time.

Chris, so happy you and your brother have reconnected.

Severe back and joint pain reminded me that sugar and gmo wheat are not my friends. I have been sugar free since last Friday and am feeling better. Well at least the back and joints are feeling better. I have that cold and flu that is going around. I usually don't have much trouble with getting virus sick since retiring, but even with massive doses of Airborne, I have been down in bed for a few days. Feeling better, so taking baby steps this morning to see if I want to try to work today.

I don't know if it is the virus or because I have not been sampling the candy at work, but the evening cravings have stopped. I haven't totally eliminated the wheat yet. Currently in the house I have Ezekiel bread which is non gmo. I still have tons of noodles and just finished off the crackers. Plan is to not buy more for now and to consider noodles and crackers dessert.

And it is not even spring forward day! I sure hope I can sleep tonight. I spent a couple hours at my brother's. He is now 87 but doing well. We can talk about lots of stuff. If we start not having enough to talk about he pulls out his zillions of photos--and now they are on his ipad, not only in his many scrapbooks.

this makes my move "back home" what I want it to be. I am trying to reconnect.

Weird, my son didn't sleep most of the night. Fell asleep around 5am. So I let him sleep in until 11:30! (I dozed from about 3 until 4, up until 5, then back to sleep but fitful until about 10 when I finally got up). But now we have a VERY short day.

Funny that all the way across the country you had a similar issue.

I do like that feeling of chewing. But letting the chocolate melt is OK, too.

Last night I did not sleep--all night. This has happened only once before. Nothing worked.

I was sick 2 days ago. I stayed in bed and slept one day. But I was up and busy yesterday. I don't understand why I could not sleep!

Hope tonight is better! chris

For a long time, I used to dissolve a dark chocolate square in my mouth every night as I walked upstairs to bed. I knew I'd have it, and it kept me from binge eating. It took a long flavorful time to dissolve, and it was comforting.

Then I had a condition where I couldn't eat chocolate (or anything with even the tiniest amount of caffeine), plus everything tasted nasty anyway. So I got out of the habit. When I tried to resume it, I just couldn't relocate that mindset.

I do still enjoy the dissolving chocolate sometimes, but other times I want to bite it! Maybe my son's aggression phase is rubbing off on me, LOL.

Long ago I attended a 2 day workshop for weight loss. I hope I can remember the speaker's name....

Anyway, just before the lunch break, she passed out one Hersey's Kiss to each of us--about 75 people. We were told to hold it in our mouth for as long as possible before swallowing.

I still remember that lesson this many years later!

Try it. You'll be amazed. But be sure to wait till you are actually quite hungry. emoticon

Your tactic is perfect for my current "push."

Being aware is what I am trying to do. I put little labels in many places in the house. Just one word "aware."

Thanks so much for your idea of being aware AND THEN planning ahead just a short time .

I recently discovered that I associate home with eating (I guess comfort eating). As soon as I step through the door, I want food. I tried a variety of things that didn't work. One thing that does work is:

On the way home I spend about 5 minutes thinking about what I'll eat when I get home. Apart from home and food, I can think rationally about it and choose a good healthy snack for the minute I walk in. Like a piece of fruit. Then I'm satisfied long enough to cook a reasonable meal. And eat that. And be done for the night except for my late snack. I have to know I have a late snack coming (and I try to choose healthy, but don't limit myself to that b/c I'm not a prisoner! LOL).

That little plan has helped me a lot.

I love these dream stories.

Chris, here is one for you. I may be repeating myself, but it always worth sharing. I taught spec ed preschoolers, full spectrum from medically fragile to behavior problems. Not a good mix. However, I had outstanding EAs, so not sure why the dream and it was recurring. I dreamed that I would go to work and have been assigned 50 three and four year olds with half in wheel chairs and half trying to escape and my aides have not shown up. That is bad enough, but I would just get overwhelmed and walk out the door and leave the whole lot to themselves. I always felt a little guilty for being such a bad person in my dreams. I figured it was because my job was overwhelming even with good support. And basically, when I did retire, I did walk away completely. Luckily, there were plenty of capable people to take over with my students.

Side note: I did supervise 50 kindergarten students by myself one year during their end of the year party. Not sure how that worked since I did not have my teaching license yet. I was their student teacher. It was field day. I just spent the two hours counting heads. They had fun. No one got hurt and all were accounted for when the parents showed up.

WOW, Katherine, that is quite an impressive story! chris

I have to be diligent about caring for myself. 100 DAYS OF WEIGHT LOSS is a great way for me to keep focused. Day 1 is July 1, 2017. Build habits to produce success. Most of these habits I have at least tried before but did not sustain. First habit: delay eating by using a timer.

i had a recurring dream from hell it's self

a Demon is always chasing me.I always see a park bench. Years went by with this dream

one night I was determined, if I ever dream this again I was going to rebuke it by the Blood of Christ . It happens and I rebuke it . I never had that dream again

I learned this method from a ministry sermon.Years for a lady went by a dog kept chasing her always up a tree .she was afraid to go to sleep. Well she felt the Lord told her the next time look at the dog !!!!! she refused to look at the dog for fear. but she looked the dog had no Teeth

Isaiah 41:10 [Full Chapter]
‘Do not fear [anything], for I am with you; Do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, be assured I will help you; I will certainly take hold of you with My righteous right hand [a hand of justice, of power, of victory, of salvation

Autism is so hard to deal with. You pour your heart out and your efforts for not much back. You have to refresh yourself lots and often to keep going. When people acknowledge our efforts it feels so affirming but when they can't it hurts. Keep "filling up" at sparkpeople! It helps me tremendously. chris

Sounds similar to my building dreams. Wonder why we have them?

And don't even get me started on the teenage boy personality! Whew, that + autism + OCD is my daily challenge!

What can I do for myself today?

My most often recurring dream is getting very lost in a complicated place--always there is a trail or hallway or something to follow. Now having said that, most often I feel lost in the "bowels" of my old school. It did have a scary basement with long halls and several levels. In the dreams are several side by side buildings and the levels don't matchup. so you might have to go up some stairs or an elevator to get to the lower floors of another building. And then often the re is a demolished or semi-demolished area and I have to go outside. I always get lost outside trying to get to the main building which has its entrance furthest from my starting point. I can see reasons why I have that dream. I often feel lost in my paperwork and also my job teaching was very, very complicated. Multi handicapped Deaf students in most of the various school subjects slightly related to the sciences. Add in the personalities of teenagers--oh boy!

Well, last night I had a doozy. I dreamt that my husband got caught in the crossfire of a shootout at a hotel he was staying at on a business trip! Talk about waking up drained. I think it was a combination of a lot of things that triggered that one. Anniversary of my father's death was Monday. Found out that our financial person hadn't changed the names of our accounts to our trust, and I thought well, good thing we didn't die in the last 5 years since it was supposed to have been done! And being worried about my husband not sleeping much lately and not exercising much. All together = freaky dream about him suddenly dying. So glad to wake up from that one and find out it wasn't real!!

What can I do for myself today?

Around age seven or eight I had dreams about snakes and slugs everywhere. I couldn't get away from them. Probably from the neighbor boys chasing me with said critters.

Interesting. I have a lot of building dreams. The main recurring one is that I'm exploring, sometimes alone, sometimes with others. And I end up in the same weird fancy furnished attic type place (same place every time I have the dream), but then, I'm suddenly someplace else and can't get back to the cool attic. And I'm lost inside another building and can't get out. It ranges from scary to frustrating depending on when I have it.

The shift of your dream from one building to another, reminded me of mine. What funny brains we have when we sleep. I hope your scary dream doesn't return!

I had an unusual and rather frightening dream last night. I was in a huge building with many other people. Bees were getting in through cracks and stinging everyone! Somehow we escaped and went to a different big building but we could not close all the gaps. Bees still got in!

We were in an independent living apartment building. But... they were taking in mostly quite old people with disabilities. It was not what I expected. Now I am in a condo. I like it. But I do miss hubby. During the night especially I keep thinking I hear him calling me, "Chipmunk, Chipmunk..."

The assisted living facility I worked at required people to be 50. I personally think that is wrong. Some young people would be good therapy for the old folks.

The group home kids were 18-24. Similar ages and similar skills. Or at least skills that were complementary.

Cathy: how old are your friends who are moving to assisted living? I'm always curious about this b/c of trying to plan for my son's future.

Chris: I'm SO glad hubby is doing well! Must feel great. And sounds like the friend who came over is a fantastic person to have around! Invite her again soon.

Hubby is doing well. I am trying to post a photo of him wearing a green top hat for St. Pat's Day. I will keep trying. It is html. The fact that he wore it tells me his emotions are pretty positive right now.

I am still putting away stuff I moved. It is never ending. I thought my basement looked great and not too full. Then I realized I have a whole storage area to bring here! Oh well.

A friend helped me yesterday. When she was leaving she said , It was fun." Huh? Actually I did enjoy myself. She is a very upbeat person! As a kid I played with the 4 kids in her family. Now I am back here and we are all old! Oh my! chris

It just started raining. Glad I got Buds walk in earlier. The CFS is acting up, but then I did actually work six hours yesterday, so that is to be expected.

Is everyone settled into their new places comfortably now?

My sis and BIL are moving to their new assisted living facility on March 9th. Most of the stuff they are keeping has been packed and moved. Good thing they traveled a lot and moved a lot when they were younger. They have the skills to move with grace.
