2020 SECRETS TO SUCCESS-share your secrets please

Thanks, Chris

I have to be diligent about caring for myself. 100 DAYS OF WEIGHT LOSS is a great way for me to keep focused. Day 1 is July 1, 2017. Build habits to produce success. Most of these habits I have at least tried before but did not sustain. First habit: delay eating by using a timer.

Those stairs sound pretty dramatic--and hard to climb. How is it coming down. Sometimes the down trip isn't so easy.

I have been on an eating plan for 11 weeks. This is unheard of! My cravings reduced for some reason and I could pretty easily stay on the plan. I did lose some weight but it is now stalled. I don't know how to get it going again. And, I got sick. Darn. Conjunctivitis. I am on a steroid and antibiotic eye drops. It has not been fun!

I want to be out walking but I don't feel so great. The best laid plans....

My shoulder is much better since I have been supporting that arm using the mouse. Yeah! I see the PT on Friday.

Happy New Year! emoticon

Mouse shoulder. I never heard of that before. I looked it up and it described what I was going through during NaNoWriMo. Glad you found out about it and are getting it healed.

The last two days I have been tackling what I call the stair master. Yes, I am feeling so much better. My diet has improved again too. I grew up on the backside of a small volcano cone. We called it Nob Hill. The front side has a sheer cliff where it was excavated for the rock and then later made into Mill property. It is part of the Riverwalk and quite gorgeous. Anyway, at the top of the cliff was a large apartment built for the mill workers. At some point they built a concrete stair to the bottom of the hill. So, I park downtown, walk to the stairs and climb all 85 steps with Buddy. According to Google that is seven flights of stairs. I thought it looked more like five, but I am not arguing. Then I walk down and up and down and up again through the crater (sidewalks) till I get to a different set of stairs and walk down them and back to the car. Yesterday my legs were jello. Today they are stiff and crampy. I ate pickles and plan to rub them with magnesium oil. I plan to do this two more days and then choose something different to tackle. Really feeling blessed that I feel like doing this.

You sound great, Cathy. I think maybe a month ago you were fighting an illness, Good for you for being healthy!

I just got back from the grocery store. They put in the car for me! Yeah! I just make th e list online. I love it. If I walk around the store, I get too tired then I don't want to put the stuff away.

The last 2 days I slept lots again. I hate that. Today is much better-so far anyway.

I have a very sore neck/shoulder right side. PT was not helping all summer. I found "mouse shoulder" online. Supporting my right arm using the mouse is helping. Finally!

Happy New Year. Wishing you the best! chris

I have to follow the one in one out rule, or I would be over run too. Helps especially with yarn. I love to look at and touch and buy yarn. That in itself is a hobby. So, I am not buying more yarn, till I get another dresser drawer emptied. I say that and I have bought five skeins of yarn lately. Luckily I have also finished several projects and passed them on, but I do have a bit of remorse.over it. LOL I really want to be able to keep all my art/craft supplies in the dresser and the two plastic towers. I have three bags on the bedroom floor. One for painting, one for writing and one for sketching. Those need to fit in that dresser too.

Currently, I have a card table and really pretty horse and kitten picture in the middle of the living room. It will stay there till I either finish and take a picture or till January 1, whichever comes first. In the meantime, I am not going to fret about it.

Oh, can't eat while working on puzzles. I do enjoy them, but they aren't restful for me. More like scaling a mountain. I feel joy and success at conquering it, but not rested. Not the way I feel when knitting or painting or sketching.

Success today: I actually took the 52 affirmation challenge on another thread. I meant one a day, but Kali posted 52. So I did the same thing. By the time I got done, I felt really good about myself and then walked Buddy and felt physically energized with no pain and it was pouring down rain. We were soaked when we got home, but both of us were happy. It is certainly a different feeling than I had when I crawled out of bed this morning.

walking I agree with--but crafting--no way

I can't keep stuff organized, especially all the different things you need for crafting--or even painting or drawing!

I knew there were five areas of wellness. The one I forgot was emotional.

But the graph I looked on had added a sixth, occupational. Personally, I think that one might be redundant if we exercise the other five. But something to think about. How can we nurture ourselves at work and retirement? Personally, I do a lot of crafting and walking.

I am not full throttle like I was this summer with documenting, but it sure has made it easier to just focus on the difficult time.

Holiday Secret: Start over quickly. So you had a splurge, a binge, whatever. Don't be afraid to quickly forgive yourself and then start eating healthy foods again. I used to binge for three four months at a time and beat myself up every morning. Needless to say I gained a lot of weight. So instead of giving up, I start over every morning. Every day is a new opportunity to become healthy, mentally, physically, spiritually and socially.

Hmmm......maybe I need to start over at 5pm and 7pm too.......

Only recording things eaten after 5 PM> I like that idea! My main problem for at least 4 months has been overnight eating. This is a brand new problem for me. If I be sure to document food after, maybe 7:00 at night till morning. That should help me. Thanks, Cathy. chris emoticon

I have eaten a large green salad before going out. I still eat but maybe not as much and at least I have the greens in me so I feel better. I just never remember to fill up first. And evening binges also have nothing to do with physical hunger for me either.

Holiday Success Secret: Since I lost 25 pounds and despite gaining back ten of it around Thanksgiving, I am freezing this winter. I probably lost an inch of fat to keep me warm. So instead of eating or freezing I have bought a bunch of sweaters and vests and a warm fuzzy robe to layer up in. I also have cranked up the electric blanket so I can crawl in a warm bed. I do not want to gain weight just to stay warm. And yes, I shut the blanket off when I put my cpap on.

I just counted. I have 13 sweaters, 1 vest and the new robe. I am good to go for January and February. Hope to be acclimated by then and thinner. It starts warming in March.

My major issue is also evening snacking. I don't have any good tips, but right now I'm doing ok with it.

As for holidays, I like some of the suggestions made: samples instead of servings... As for eating something first (before a party/gathering), I'm not sure whether that would really help much as most of my overeating issues don't really have anything to do with hunger. Although I suppose if I'm not hungry, it might at least slow me down!

So far my struggling has been after 5 PM. I think it is some kind of combo of physical and mental. I can remember having a major slump at work at 3PM. Don't notice it now that I am retired and can pretty much do what I want. I usually have some kind of healthy snack then. I used to eat a candy bar when working to recharge me. Then I switched to protein bars, which have as much sugar as a candy bar. Now I eat salad or soup or my slushies with fruits and veggies in them. But after 5 PM I get a grinchlike "what the heck" attitude and all the good work goes out the window. This week has been better.

Secret to Success: Don't know if this is going to work, but I decided to volunteer somewhere. The theory is that if I am up and out of the house committed to helping someone else that It will keep my mind off food for one more day a week. I sent an inquiry by e-mail to our local 4-H extension agent. Will let you know how that goes.

What a great idea, tracking after 5pm foods only (unless that creates a 430pm binge, lol).

To get me back on track, my health coach is having me track only what I eat after 5PM. It takes the pressure off fretting about the rest of the day and I am more conscious of what I am putting in my mouth when the binge issues start.

I want to talk about sweaters and volunteering on future days, so making notes here.

Our TOPS Leader did a program on this very topic, this morning! One member had a good observation: parties are easier to handle than family gatherings! True!
Tips she shared;
1. Eat and drink something BEFORE you go.
2. Focus on the people, not the food.
3. Ask yourself, "Is this food really worth it?" Hoping these help someone on our team!
Hugs, Robyn emoticon

Use a small plate

"sample" anything you like! Just keep portion small. Denying a favorite leads to a binge later so have some now!

Stay hydrated and go for a walk. Add steps by parking farther away when shopping and running errands. Bad weather? Hike an indoor mall.
