emoticon oh the kids and their devices. Managed a trip to Halifax on Sunday, cold but brilliant sunshine so all good. Met the new "puppy", more like horse as he weighs about 50lbs and is just 11 months old. He has settled right in, learning commands rapidly and has become a running companion for my son.
We now have heavy rain falling onto ice here with a freeze tonight, my ice grippers are seeing constant duty and much of my walking will have to be indoors.

It's getting awfully quiet around here again.

I closed on my new house last Monday and got internet installed and the locks re-keyed the next day, Good thing we had internet over there because it went out for 2 days during the polar vortex and I ended up taking the kid over to the new house to spend the day - better than listening to him complain all night because he had no internet.

In food news, I did join the Engine 2 Rescue 10x - it started Sunday night. 10 weeks of having to be accountable to the team.

On track here despite the bitterly cold weather; 49 miles walked last week, 15 miles on my stationary bike, core and resistance band workouts 3X each. Weight settled to just above 120 lbs., working on cleaning up my eating (less bread and more veggies) and I have decided my search for vegan yogurt is a non starter, I detest it! Yuck...two small servings of plain 1% Greek yogurt will be just fine instead.
Busy de cluttering room by room and reading "You are a Badass" by Jen Sincero, I highly recommend it.

Hope everyone is getting things done for their health in this new year that is now 2 weeks old. I have started paying more attention to what I put in my mouth - yes, vegan was not always healthy, but I have lost 2 lbs. since my initial weigh-in for the Winter 5% Challenge so far as of this morning. YAY! Also back to making time to get up and walk at work.

Those ornaments will be gorgeous and I am sure every one will tell a story. When I was a kid my sister and I would scout our farm's woodland for a tree on Christmas Eve, drag it home and then that night it would be installed in a big bucket of sand and decorated. It was always taken down on January 2 as New Year's Day was my parent's anniversary.

One of my friends decided he wanted to be very "Old World German" this year and put up the tree Christmas Eve. Until he found out I have to work tomorrow. So we're going to do it today. He's been telling me about these Polish blown-glass ornaments he collects and I can't wait to see them.

I know what you mean. Yesterday, I was reading Dr. Fuhrman's book on my Kindle and I kept wishing I could turn the pages and browse the "book" as if it had been a real book. It's just not the same. emoticon

I too value real books and refuse to have a Kinder. I don't "keep" books any longer however; having moved several times made it apparent that many would remain in their boxes forever. Here I weed my collection every year and donate to the Canadian University Women's Foundation who have annual book sales to raise bursary money for needy female students. Apart from books gifted to me I haunt the public library.

I have five 7' tall bookcases, two 6' ones, six 5' ones, and some smaller ones. I've already taken many boxes of things over to Half Price Books, books, record albums, son's old games that he's out-grown. The new house is smaller, so most of the books will just get stored until I can get the library set up. I will also do some weeding and selling as I unpack, but there are lots of signed books - those must be kept.
I dislike reading on my nook - I have one for the few things I want that are not being published in hard-copy, but I spend all day staring at a screen and want a real book when I get home.

CONTROUBLE: 5 pallets of books? emoticon I know where you're coming from! I LOVE reading books. But recently, I've given away quite a few boxes full of them. I still read a lot, but I use my Kindle reader. I prefer the feel of a real book, but I like being able to increase the font on my page so that I don't need to put on my reading glasses, it also saves storage space in my 3-1/2 room apartment. Now I only have one bookcase full of books compared to the 3 I had before. I hope that all goes well with your move!

We have a couple of warm and rainy days ahead here, the snow and ice will be gone and a green Christmas is on tap. Perfect for travel and those of us in the Maritimes know that winter is lurking so we take advantage of the weather breaks, stock the pantry, check our generators and battery supplies and dream of Spring, lol.

On track for the holidays...if the weather cooperates. We have a storm arriving tomorrow so will have to cancel both a dental appointment (just a cleaning) and a hair appointment; I don't mind driving in a bit of snow but freezing rain is a no no. It is still calm today and after a warming spell the roads and sidewalks are clear so I am off to walk!

It's been quiet around here - everyone digging in and getting ready for the holidays?

We're going to have a quiet holiday at home most likely. Busy packing things that will need to go over to the new house to be stored - I have 5 pallets of books and I'm not done packing those, yet. Not closing until the end of January, but need to get pans and stuff to have the second kitchen set up so my son can live there without me for a bit. No way I'm giving him my good pans. The downstairs kitchen does have an electric range which he prefers, but he will probably still mostly use the microwave. Not sure if the one in that kitchen is staying since it's not a built-in, but not a big deal if it disappears before closing.

They might just be happy to get your business this time of year. Here they shut down for the winter so most folks have to rely on DIYers until the new season begins. One or two large companies are kept busy with the power companies, we tend to get a lot of ice storms that bring trees and branches down on lines.

That reads like my week, lol. We have literally gone from severe windchill to widespread power outages (half the population of Nova Scotia and worse in PEI, I was spared) due to heavy snow and wind and now a forecast of rain tonight with temperatures rising well above freezing for a day before it all zooms back to a deep freeze again. It is the new reality. The tree surgeons will have a steady business come Spring if not before!

Was just reading my last post - boy, did the weather peeps ever get Thanksgiving weekend wrong!

It started snowing Sunday afternoon and by Monday morning, there was no way I was going to be able to get out of my driveway before my plow guys came. The street plows left a rather large ridge across the bottom of my driveway and my little car would have been high-centered and I would have been really stuck. I was able to work from home Monday, so no harm done.

I did manage to get to work the rest of the week since my plow guys came about 10 o'clock Monday morning and dug me out. It was a heavy, wet snow since the temps were hovering right around freezing, so slush on the bottom and snow on top when it got colder overnight. The weight of the snow did a real number on the tree by the corner of the house and driveway.




Funny, the pics weren't sideways when I looked at them...

As you can see, the snow is almost gone now - it's been 40s and raining for a couple days.

Snowing here today - our 3rd snowfall and the first one that's actually sticking - not to the roads, yet, but to everything else.

Just realized a few minutes ago that I forgot to cover the air conditioner - oh, well, it will dry out since weather channel says it's going to be sunny and 35 tomorrow afternoon. And in the 40s for Thanksgiving through next weekend.

Guatemalan food sounds great. We're going up to my SIL's in WI - about a 3 hr drive. She lives right in the heart of dairy country, but she CAN be trained. She promised not to put butter on everything this year emoticon

Sounds like you scored with the leftover foodstuffs!
We had our first real snow here in Nova Scotia yesterday so today is cleanup time. I have a large driveway, this morning I cleared half of it and will do the rest this afternoon. Laying off weight lifting has helped tremendously and the core work makes a huge difference in strength and balance so for me I think that will be the way forward.
Thanksgiving is celebrated here in early October, I spent the day at a beach with my family and we had a picnic of freshly picked apples and pumpkin muffins. Now we are planning Christmas dinner and it may just feature Central American foods. My son lived and worked in Guatemala for a year and learned to cook wonderful native dishes while there. We can source almost all the ingredients here so it should be fun.

I know I've been off-line for a week (or 2 ). What's new people?

I had an awesome person running the con-suite for me at the convention last week and he had all kinds of stuff I could eat. Potato bar with both regular and vegan chili, regular and vegan nacho "cheeze" sauce. There was leftover of both the vegan chili and the cheeze and I got to bring them home (can't return opened/cooked stuff to the store)

I froze most of it after making a meal for my son and myself with it and since he liked it too, i now need to track down both recipes.

Thanksgiving is next week where I live - what are my fellow Americans planning to take or make for family get-togethers? Do you even have family get-togethers for Thanksgiving? Curious minds want to know.

Fantastic! I was at a wedding in the UK last year; the bride has serious dietary issues so she was very aware of others needs and wishes. My vegetarian entree and appetizers were wonderful and several folks at the same table were extremely jealous and wished they asked for the same.
I am back to square one with weight training as my previously damaged shoulders are screaming NO! When time and money allow I am going to access a local physio who also has a small fitness studio. In the meantime I will focus on body weight exercise for core strength as well as balance and stretching. It's a bummer but I won't let it stop me.
A few days of warm and dry weather ahead so garden cleanup will finally get done. Thanks to the wind most of the leaves have blown away! Have a Sparking week.

I am seriously impressed with the staff where the fundraiser was held last night. One of the servers during cocktail hour must have heard me decline appetizer because it had duck, or fish, or cheese (all 3 were on offer) and my salad came out with no cheese on and for entree I got a lovely stuffed eggplant with black beans and mushrooms with steamed green beans, carrots, and fingerling potatoes instead of the chicken everyone else got. emoticon

Went to the store this morning and sliced baby 'Bella mushrooms were on sale, so I bought a couple pounds and there is now a pot of Mushroom Barley soup on the stove - hope I have enough jars left.

Another thing I do is use the jars of frozen soup as my "ice block" in the bag I pack my food in for work. I use a thermal grocery bag and that keeps everything cold until I'm ready to eat.

What a super cooking project!
Entertaining a five and eight year old for the weekend, lots of activity and lots of kid friendly foods, thankfully they love bananas and apples but as they say "Grammy, we are not vegetarians, we are omnivores". We will all survive and have a great time.

Simmered the bean soup for a few hours, then finished it off by adding a 2 pound bag of frozen mixed veg and a pound bag of frozen chopped onion and letting it come back to a simmer. All packed into the pint jars and in the deep freeze. Best Christmas present I ever got from my hubby - was our first Christmas after we got married - 1978 and it's still going strong.

Yesterday after work I put a cup each of black, pinto, navy, and adzuki beans to soak. Today I will add 3 kinds of lentils and make a big pot of bean soup to freeze - my son's favorite soup.

I will also make and freeze a smaller pot of "fake-a-roni" - whole grain macaroni with tomato puree and spices and stir in LightLife ground veggie crumbles. I know those aren't whole food, but my son wants his beef-a-roni and this is better than beef for him. That will give him easy-to-make lunches since I work and refuse to pack him a lunch now that he's out of school.

I freeze all this in pint wide-mouth mason jars - just remove the lid and nuke - something even he can do.

Veggie stews, chilies, soups; the internet is full of recipes and I also collect cookbooks. I also cook up one or two grains once a week, enough for several meals, 1/2c servings. I live for bowl meals- grains, legumes and lots of roasted veggies, sprinkle on seeds or a sauce, yum!

Thanks for the toothpaste tip! I finally found some ant traps, the store had put them away for the season but dug them out for me. The gardening section has been removed in favour of Christmas merchandise, Aarrgghh!
Be sure to tell us about PlantPure, I have no such option here so often do batch cooking, divide it into servings and freeze for later.

Kerry, I'm thinking about ordering from PlantPure. I'm alone, so it is just me and while I love to cook, it is sometimes not worth it to me to cook for just one. I find that I go for something easy and not always as pure as I would like. What do you think of them and what are your favorites?

I put peppermint toothpaste in along where they come in. That seems to do the trick

2 weeks until vacation- We have a kitchen and will be able to buy plenty of vegan foods. We are staying with in-laws and they love their meat. BUT I think it will all be ok.

Thank you for the Team Goodie, a nice surprise to start my day!
Off to choral practice in a bit, then to the hardware store to buy some ant traps. For some reason I am finding regular ants indoors; my home is new but built on a slab and this seems to be their point of entry, ugh! No doubt they are looking for warmth, there is no food sources where I find them.
Grandkids, ages five and eight, will be here for the weekend, I have plans to keep them very busy with outdoor fun, movies and popcorn. Should be fun! emoticon

My DS is autistic and does not cook, but since he never really liked meat all that much, switching him over to WFPB wasn't hard. One convenience food I do take advantage of are the frozen dinners from PlantPure - Nelson Campbell's company. Yes, Campbell, as in the son of T. Colin Campbell. The frozen dinners are something my son can do for himself.

Yesterday-
I cooked adzukli beans in broth
Will cook up carrot and celery and ginger and tamari with and add a little garlic and top with scallions
sautee kale and bake delicata squash

We keep it to basics here ...mostly- kids appreciate that now that they are young adults.
They come back here and get some sauteed greens
rice/sweet potato and beans and feel really good and we have a salad with that

My eldest appreciates it because
Ze are vegan but busy and get vegan convenience foods often

DD- second child she does although pescatarian is also busy and appreciates the nutrition

DD-third works at a place that serves tons of meat and goes to college- she is an omnivore but appreciates how good she feels after eating one of those meals and then will say I need to eat healthier. I t can be hard when in your 20's

DS- when home from college...who is an excellent cook- well they all are but really loves to is vegetarian and again feels good just from those basic food

BUT Around the holidays we will indulge, We cook quite a bit from Isa's books...and love to experiment. That is when we make pizzas and home made cheese and indulgent vegan foods such as sausages or chickpea cutlets etc... They like to make vegan cookies

DH does not cook. He will eat anything I put in front of him

I did do a keto experiment in 2016 for 3 weeks-
I figured I needed to see first hand what that was like..anyhow..I remember my husband saying at one point when I packed his lunch.."Are you trying to kill me?"
I replied no dear you don't have enough life insurance.

-He actually did enjoy the keto foods for about 3-4 days then he got sick of it and is always appreciative of the vegan whole food plant based meals he gets.
he does eat whatever at events he goes to. He eats cheese sample etc and he has milk or half and half here at home with coffee
BUT the big thing is that he has stopped eating eggs. I never though that would happen.

Well- getting cold here. I am wearing a hat. Too cheap to run heat yet

Kerry, that's basically my dinner most days. I might serve it with a small bit of cooked grains and instead of frozen veggies I usually top the potato with roasted veggies. It is all so tasty!

My son likes this dish - take a cold baked sweet potato, then slice it into cubes and put in a microwave safe bowl, top with unsalted cooked beans and frozen mixed vegetables and nuke until warm. He would eat that 7 days a week if I let him. It's also quick and easy to put together and I can just cover it and leave it in the fridge and he can heat it up himself on nights I'm going to be late getting home.

What do you mean by a Sunday morning coffee break?

That sounds super yummy!
I have company coming tonight and am making a chowder; 2. diced carrots, 2 diced stalks of celery and 1 onion spiced with cayenne, cumin,coriander, paprika, turmeric, ginger, sea salt and ground black pepper. Add in 2T maple syrup and 1T fish sauce, then 4 cups of veggie broth. Once softened, add 3 cups of cauliflower florets and cook until tender but not mushy. Finally add one can coconut milk, heat through and serve in hot bowls. Serve with heated whole grain baguette.
It is damp and cold here so this seems perfect!

PS, measurement for all spices is 1/4tsp.

I second that Thank You to Kerry for stepping up to lead the team! Last night, I started out by cooking some black eyed peas (dried), then added onion, celery, carrots, vegetable seasoning, water and cooked all. At the last, I added canned tomatoes. I didn't have a recipe, just seeing what I had on hand. This morning, I boiled some yellow Yukon potatoes and made a potato salad of that, mustard, red onion, Balsamic vinegar, Apple cider vinegar, pepper and shopped cilantro. Yummy! But I need ideas of what to mix with what. I know that I need to start using more seasonings to pick up the flavors.

I like the thoughts of MAUITN about sharing ideas for cooking, recipes, shopping, etc. The rainbow challenge works as it makes us think about diversity in our daily meals which of course leads to better nutrition. Maybe also just a quick check in once a week? A Sunday morning coffee break idea perhaps.
You are doing a great job as leader Kerry, it is not an easy task to keep people motivated while realizing that many have limited time and may belong to many many teams and have literally hundreds of Spark friends.

I was co leading Eat to :Live- I removed myself as leader as I don't agree with Dr. Fuhrman's top part of his food pyramid lol..but anyhow- I did find I had to check in sometimes because it would get quiet and then some one would have a question although many times members answered

I will check out the eat the rainbow- and will most like do that and will try to think of challenges...although I agree with Earnie. I don't quite have the cooking thing down so that it takes little time and I can start doing artwork..otherwise I should consider doing vegan cooking somewhere for pay emoticon and would like to share what we are eating- wish we could be sharing the food IRL emoticon

AND I am on a really tight budget so sharing tips ofr that would be great too- I am freezing scraps and making veggie stock etc

I’m starting again and it would be helpful to see what others eat in a day and how they food prep so they are not cooking for hours every night.
