The only bad thing was that many if not most of the food booths were selling vegan junk food. Beyond Burger was giving out free samples as were several other food companies. I tried some granola and it was so sweet I gagged. Went around to the side where they were selling and read the ingredient list - second thing on the list was cane sugar - but they think it's okay because it's organic - nope. Needless to say, none of that came home with me.
The Buddha bowls were great, though.

VeggieFest sounds like something I'd like to attend. It's fun that you got to hear Dr. Barnard in person. Even more so, that your diabetic friend got to hear him too! Even if I don't learn anything "new" I enjoy listening to knowledgeable people about plant-based living because it often clarifies and solidifies certain points. I've only been plant-based for 2-3 years, though. Maybe after awhile WFPB eating does become second-nature. I'm looking forward to that phase in my development, but I think I'll still enjoy listening to WFPB speakers for motivation. I do hope you'll get something out of Dr. Barnard's next presentation, Kerry!

You know, the message across all these whole foods plant based platforms is pretty much the same. Once you know what to do,....well, you know what to do. What I like to hear is all the success stories. Those are always new and motivating!

Spent yesterday at VeggieFest and got to see and hear Dr. Neal Barnard talk. Took a diabetic friend from work and he was impressed. We are also going to see him again on the 24th in Rosemont. I just hope he doesn't give the same talk - I had already seen almost all of the stories he told on You-tube.

Hi Kerry. Sounds like you're really busy! It's important to use Sparkpeople as a support for our healthy lifestyles. Sometimes it's best not to log on when we need to be doing other things. I haven't been logging in very much either, which often happens in the Summer.

Hi Molly. Sounds like you had a great time at the car show. As for the bi-weekly subscription to the box of vegetables, I really like it. It encourages me to try new vegetables. I had never eaten kohlrabi before (they look like something from outer space!) and I didn't know what garlic flowers were. I'm expanding my palate to include new tastes. Everything I've received so far is fresh and delicious.

Let's be smart about our choices today! emoticon

Haha! The cars were gorgeous, all in fully restored and prime condition, today they have a road rally. My son has a 1960 Fiat Spider that he is restoring, it is a hoot to take a ride with him as you are literally sitting on the pavement.

Oh, that sounds like fun - I love well kept old cars. I actually got to drive a friend's E-type Jaguar once! 12 cylinders, dual overhead cams, manual choke, real wood dash, luxury on wheels. That car was almost as old as I was and in much better shape.

Just home from a interesting excursion to the Nova Scotia British Car Club show; over 150 amazing cars. There was a large collection of Minis in celebration of 60 years of their production (there were at least two from 1959) and then of course beautifully restored Jags, Rolls, Triumphs and MGs plus a gorgeous Astin Martin. The owners were all there, polishing and primping, reminded me of being at a horse show! Good fun and I made a point of parking a km from the venue so that I could walk through the lovely gardens of Kings Edgehill School in Windsor, Nova Scotia.

I'm a morning person so after getting up at 0545 I feed my cat and dog, get the dog out for a quick business walk, make my porridge and coffee and settle in with SP for about an hour before getting out for a long dog walk and garden work or snow shovelling. I check in with SP after lunch, reading blogs and dealing with team business. With the Summer Challenge and my co-leader duties it is essential that I do this every day. No SP in the evening, just check the world news, watch a bit of Netflix and then break out a book.

I need to better plan my time - I've managed to log on and spin every morning, but frequently have no time to post my points for the team. Today is a holiday or I would already be on my way to work. The evening is filled with things other than SP - or even my computer at all, so if some part of my usual SP routine doesn't get done before work, it doesn't get done for the day. For example I missed playing Trivia (and everything that normally comes after that) on Tuesday because I was running late . I can reply to games from my phone, but cannot access SP from work in any other way. Reading blogs from the phone is a PITA, so I don't. Maybe it's time to start bringing my iPad to work and seeing if I can connect to the wifi from the hotel across the street.

What did you get in your box? I tried that a few years back and was disappointed in the selection I received (unfortunately due to weather conditions but the group have since gone out of business).

Yum! Yum! Those tender, fresh-picked garden veggies are so delicious AND nutritious!

I enjoyed picking through my box of vegetables when I got my order. They weren't AS fresh as garden vegetables, but they taste fresher than store-bought. I'm also glad to be encouraging a small, local, family farm.

I'll be picking up my first delivery of vegetables from a local family farm on Wednesday. It's the first time I try this type of service. I'm really looking forward to seeing what's in my box! Yum! Yum!

I've continued to listen to Rip Esselstyn's podcasts. (I usually listen to the interviews while I'm cleaning up the kitchen.) I find them interesting and informative.

I have used some of the recipes; of course being me I added more veggies and seeds. The recipes are easy to prepare and quick so excellent as I get "hangry" easily.

Hi Mollie, Hi Kerry, It sure looks like you've both been terribly busy! Are you installed in your new home yet, Kerry? I wish I could plant a small garden, but I live in an apartment and don't have any land to do it on. However, I was thrilled to discover a small, family-owned, local, organic farm that has a delivery point ON MY STREET! How great is that! I just enrolled today and am looking forward to my first delivery on June 26th. Wish it could be sooner! emoticon

Thank heavens for meal prepping this past week, I have been knee deep (literally on my knees) clearing dead sod and weeds in my yard. Tomorrow we have rain and I will be glad for the rest and a chance to get prepping done for a new week. 7 cubic yards of mulch was delivered this morning, I have a lot of work ahead of me.

Just purchased yet another vegan cookbook: "Plant Based on a Budget" by Toni Okamoto. Easy, quick and nutritious meals, costed out at $30 weekly per individual. I like the format of the book PLUS the fact that there are only 2 smoothie recipes (detest smoothies). The meals are basic in that the week's shopping list has limited ingredients but that said all recipes lend themselves to substitutions so no problems including favourite freggies, grains and pastas. $25C.

Hope the fact that his bed is moving gets his wheels turning as well!

We have a very wet and blustery holiday Monday here: thunderstorms possible ( emoticon ) which means a very neurotic dog or at the very least a very wet doggy smell. I will retreat to the garage and pack up donations for a charity sale later this month as well as items to be auctioned for a fundraiser by my DIL's tackle football team, the dog can rant in the main part of the house!

The louvered bifold doors for the boiler room finally arrived last week. The contractor has installed them, even. Now just need to impress upon my son that the movers will be coming and if he doesn't get stuff packed, it won't go to the new house with his bed. Since the bed will be going, he won't have a place to sleep at the old house, so he'd best get packed.

Comment on The Food Revolution: It was both enlightening and scary to listen to the presentations on GMO's and biocides (they don't just kill "pests"!) I was scandalized to hear how so much of our foods are contaminated and all the damage it's doing to people's health. I'm grateful for courageous, competent people and lawyers who fight to communicate truth in every area. I was surprised to hear that Quaker was listed among the companies that can have up to 6 times the safe limits of biocides (aka pesticides) in their products. Cheerios were problematic too. After hearing what I heard, I will try to purchase organic oats from now on.

Yes, I'm listening to The Food Revolution, and I took these notes from Dr. Michael Klaper's interview:

"It starts with: What are you going to have for lunch today? What are you going to have for dinner? What are you going to have running through your tissues on a daily basis?

People need to realize that within minutes of eating ANYthing, molecules of that food are flowing through every cell in your body, where your DNA lies unfolded. The food you ate, that last morsel, flows through your cells and they (the molecules) wash across your DNA and they play your DNA like a piano. They turn genes on and they turn genes off. They induce enzymes and they shut enzymes down.

Every meal changes us on a genetic, molecular level. Food brings in not only nutrients, but it also brings in information. And it changes who you are. That leg of fried chicken is going to turn on a whole different set of genes than that plate of steamed kale. They have fundamentally different effects in our body."

My BIL asked me to bring our entree for Easter dinner (at his house, today) because the in-laws are all rabid carnivores.and don't understand why we would eat this way.

I started with 1.5 lbs of baby portobello mushrooms, cut and sauteed in a little water and their own juice. Then I added turmeric, curry, and smoked paprika, a cup of coconut milk, 1/4 lb of frozen chopped spinach, 1/4 lb of cauliflower florets cut small, and a can of no-salt-added garbanzo beans thoroughly rinsed and let it all simmer for a bit. I will serve it over some rice I had in the freezer - half and half brown rice and black rice.

Since my BIL almost always makes a fresh fruit salad, we will be fine even if there's absolutely nothing else we can eat because they drenched it in butter.

The last time I took something for us to eat, I made a double batch of spinach dal (my own recipe, no ghee) and my SIL said it was OK, but too much spinach - LOL - supposed to be lots of spinach or it wouldn't BE spinach dal.

Hope you are all having a wonderful weekend.

I'd be surprised if people on this team use a lot of aluminium foil, but just in case I wanted to post a link to an article warning about its use.

I'm glad that things are going well with your move, Kerry. Moving is such a demanding, and also exciting, time. I wish you well!

It sounds like Proteinaholic is an interesting book. I've heard the author speak on some health forums. Cheese was one of the last things to go for me too. That's a challenging one!

I am fascinated by how you have been able to take your time with this move, so unlike the usual mad packing and one day shift to the new house. Good planning.
One chapter left to read in "Proteinaholic", I would highly recommend the read. I have been on the edge of ditching dairy for good for some time and the studies cited have led me to trash the last of the cheese in my fridge and move forward. It's a good time to cut free as well as I have just begun an eight week 5% Spring Challenge; in maintenance I don't need to lose weight so this will be my goal instead.

Yesterday was a perfect moving furniture day - sunny, warm, no bugs out yet, so we were able to leave the doors wide open for the two men doing the heavy lifting. Didn't move my whole house, just the stuff we don't use every day like the china and crystal cabinets, the empty book cases, the stained glass, the dressers from the guest bedroom, and the corner TV & DVD player unit.
Now I can start unpacking some of the boxes and make more room at the new house and bring empty boxes back for other packing that still needs to be done.

Like the notion of focussing on who and how you want to be. I am just starting to read Proteinaholic, wow! It just confirms the sad truth of medical training not dealing with nutrition when treating disease, instead relying on Big Pharma and surgical intervention.

I'm enjoying the weekend's replays of "The Real Truth About Weight Loss". I'm able to see some of the speakers I missed. I just listened to the interview with Rich Roll. Good interview!

Things I remember from the interview:
If you've fallen off plan and made a bad choice, just get up and "make the next best choice", whatever it is (the one that's right in front of you).

The best way to lose weight? "Stop thinking about weight loss. It's about identity. Focus on the person you aspire to be. The less emphasis you put on weight loss or what the scale says, ironically, works in your favour." I have found that to be true for me.

Thank you for the name of those sites, Mollie. I will be looking into them. I've learned all I know about plant-based eating from the Internet: YouTube videos and good, informative sites. emoticon

I haven't tuned into any of them but have enjoyed Esselstyne on Netflix shows. Rich Roll has a great story to tell for sure; I bought his cookbook and have since donated it to a local charity for their yard sale. It was much too self congratulatory for my liking, a little humbleness would go a long way. My favourite website is NoMeatAthlete, has very down to earth and helpful blogs. Also arespectfullife.com has useful information.

I found that each individual speaker brought something unique and informative to the summit. Dr. Esselstyn is always one of my favorites. With his recommendation to eat greens six times per day, and that we MUST anoint them with delicious balsamic vinegar because of their important effects on our endothelial cells. I wouldn't want to eat 6 times per daily but I sure can eat greens anointed with vinegar at each of my 3 meals. His presentations are always incredibly informative with practical applications. I did miss some of the speakers, but I heard most of them. One of those I missed is Rich Roll, but I do listen to his podcast at times, so I know his amazing story.

I joined that, so I have access and can go back and listen on the website. Most of the interviews happened while I was at work and there isn't enough time in the evening to listen to all of them from the day, so glad I can do this.

Listening to the Rich Roll interview now.

I'm listening to Chef AJ's The Truth About Weight Loss Summit. It is so informative and interesting! She has wonderful guests like Dr. Esselstyn, Dr. Greger, Rich Roll, etc. I wish I had posted about it before. The interviews are free online for a 24 hour period.

How wonderful is that, I am so pleased for you!
After two glorious days of 10C (50F) weather we are back to minus values again for a few days. The sun is shining however and a great deal of our ice and snow is gone so there is cause to celebrate the approach of Spring. I was thrilled to talk with a friend yesterday who is transitioning to a plant based diet. The revelations regarding farmed fish and factory raised chicken have finally rang a bell; fish is gone and he has reduced poultry to one serving a week of free range fowl plus he and his wife are learning to cook many of the recipes in the books I have sent their way. One step at a time!

NEWS! Not WFPB news, though.

It finally happened - I got an offer from my work for direct employee - they met my asking salary, so I accepted it, I will no longer be a contractor as of April 8th.

I enjoy listening to Ocean Robbins. I find that his dad has such an amazing story about being true to your values! He must be so proud that his son is walking in his footsteps!

After another weather week from hell it looks like we catch a break this coming week, sunshine although still cold but absolutely no need for crampons on my boots and in fact I have been wearing my waterproof trail shoes with wool socks, heavenly! I am reading The 31 Day Food Revolution by Ocean Robbins, excellent and I highly recommend it. Succinct, full of information and great recipes that don't take rocket science to create. Will write some blogs as I continue to work through it all.
