You can make your own hand sanitizer using aloe vera gel, water, and essential oils. Washing hands is super smart, but when you cannot, using this sanitizer is great.

2 oz aloe vera gel
6 oz water
9 drops clove oil
9 drops cinnamon oil
9 drops rosemary oil
9 drops eucalyptus oil
40 drops lemon oil

Mix well and use as needed!

Okay, as promised here is my review of my first workout on the fitness blender site. It rocked! I did a 27 minute upper body/upper back routine at level 4 (levels are 1-5, 5 being most difficult) and though it was hard I made it through. Today I am sore even though I've been doing upper body ST workouts...this workout really challenged my upper body in different ways. My husband only did 1 set of 3 with me and he was wiped out. The site has tons of free videos, enough to keep you working out forever but there are also workout plans for purchase. Today I purchased a $3.99 workout plan that is a 2 week fat loss program that I can use forever for the one time purchase price. The site also gives recipes, before and after stories/photos as well as healthy recipes and information. I think it is going to be a great addition to my healthy lifestyle and will work well in conjuction with sparkpeople.

I still think sparkpeople is the best site overall for the free information and resources but I have nothing against "double dipping" and recommend fitnessblender.com for their wide variety of free workout videos that offer different fitness levels that are a bit more challenging.

I love to go home after work and do sparkpeople videos with coach Nicole but am really excited to try some of the videos on this site. They have workouts you can purchase but they have so many free workouts you probably never need to spend a penny.

I know that sleep can be an issue. For some, it's all the time. For others, it's seasonal. For me, it appears to be "hormonal". Anyway, I've been trying something new and over the past 5 nights, 4 have been amazing! (Last night was NOT, but TOM is due shortly and my issues seem to magnify during the week beforehand.)

Here's a solid idea to try. (I'm going to "keep score" for a month and see how it plays out!)

Last night, before bed, I warmed 1/2 a glass of milk + 1 sm tsp of honey + scant less than 1 tsp ashwagandha powder. I was preparing to try not to gag since I do NOT have an affinity for warm milk. But the honey added just the right blend, and I was thankful to NOT have a problem.

Hard to recommend anything without knowing what the problem is but for stress and anxiety I recommend valerian root, lemon balm, catnip and passionflower, either in combination or individually. I hope things get better Rose and will be praying for you!

Medicinal uses of Bay Leaves


About Bay Leaves
Bay leaves are the leaves collected from the shrub. The leaves have been used as spice since ancient times. They are native to India and are widely found. They have spread to other parts of Asia and the Mediterranean region over time. They have a very good aroma and are similar in smell to cinnamon spice. Bay laurel tree has been regarded as Sun God in Astrology.

Bay Leaves are called as Laurels and have associated to wisdom since ancient times. It has been a tradition to garland a King of wisdom with Bay Leaves in the ancient times.
They have a very good medicinal and culinary uses, which are described below.

Common and Botanical Names
Bay leaves or bay laurel is the common name of the herb. The Botanical name is Cinnamomum tamala or Laurus nobilis and belongs to the family Lauraceae. In Tamil, it is called as Talishappattiri or Ilavankap Pathiri. Common names of Bay Leaves include Indian cinnamon, Tejpatta, Mahpat, Tejpatra, Develee, Tamalapatra, Dalchini ele, Karuvapatta patram, Varanga, Coca, Akupatri, etc

Primary Medicinal Uses of Bay Leaves
Spice

The leaves have a very good aroma and are mainly used as a spice in Indian cooking since ages. The fruits are also used as a flavoring agent in cuisines. Though the leaves are good, it is not essential to consume cooked leaves. They are tough to digest. The essential ingredients get mixed in the food and offer the benefits for the body.

Health Enhancer

Bay leaf as a spice has many minerals, vitamins and other essential compounds that are essential for maintaining good health.

Fresh leaves contain a lot of Vitamin C and hence have immunity building, wound healing and body resistant properties.

Bay Leaves are also rich in Vitamain A. This makes sure that you have a very good visual and skin health.

The spice is rich Vitamin B and makes sure that you get rid of nerve problems and regulates body metabolism.

Joint Pains

The oil extracted from the leaves have great medicinal properties. They are used to treat muscle pain, rheumatism, sprain, arthritis, etc

Stomach disorders

The herb has a curative effect in curing various stomach related problems like flatulence, diarrhea, colic pain, etc. In some counties, the fruits of the tree are dried and a decoction is prepared out of it. They are consumed and is good for the digestive health.

Diabetes

The leaves are very effective in treating diabetes. The leaves can be powdered and consumed for 30 days. This results in significant drop in sugar levels in the body. They also have a good effect on the heart and regulate heart functioning.

Enhanced Pregnancy

The leaves have the property of inducing pregnancy. They are mixed with Anise and inserted into vagina for inducing pregnancy.

Regular Menstruation

The leaves and fruits of the herb have the property of inducing regular and normal menstruation. Hence they are taken orally.

Common Cold and Sore Throat

For treating common cold, you can have a steam bath prepared out of Bay Leaves. If you are suffering from a sore throat, you can gargle with powdered leaves / fruits of the herb.

Additional Uses
Contraceptive

In few countries, a hot water extract of the leaves is taken and consumed. This acts as a contraceptive.

Sleep Inducer

The leaves act as a sleep inducer. Hence they can be consumed before bedtime. A few drops of the leaf extract can be taken and mixed with water and consumed.

Blood Circulation

The oil extracted from the leaves can be applied over the body. This promotes blood circulation in the body.

Perfume

The leaves have a very good odor and are used as a main ingredient in the perfume industry.

Sauces

Bay Leaves are used in preparation of many sauces like tomato sauce.

Vaginal Discharge

The herb has the property of curing vaginal discharge.

Insect Repellent

The leaves of the herb serve as insect repellent.

How to Store Bay Leaves

Bay leaves can be plucked from the plants and dried in the shade. The leaves should not be exposed to direct sunlight. The dried leaves can be stored in closed jars or containers. They should not be exposed to strong light. The leaves can be stored and used up to one year. Beyond that, they lose the essential components.

Precautions
Pregnant women should avoid consuming excess quantity of the leaves.
There are various other leaves that are similar looking. It is important that we do not get deceived by such false looking leaves.

Exercises That Can Add Years to Your Life



Working out isn't only about how you'll look in that bikini. Getting — and staying — in shape boosts heart health, helps your skin and improves your sleep, to mention just a few of the healthy perks.

And just last week, we added another motivation to the list, when a new study linked jogging to increased life expectancy. Researchers from the Copenhagen City Heart Study found that jogging one to two-and-a-half hours a week in two or three different sessions was associated with an additional 6.2 years for men and 5.6 years for women.

The CDC recommends healthy adults get two hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activity (like brisk walking), plus two or more days of strength-training a week.

The research doesn't quite prove that jogging helps you live longer, as The Boston Globe points out, but it is certainly encouraging, and hopefully inspiring for anyone who is more inclined to sit on the couch than lace up a pair of running sneakers.

And jogging isn't the only form of exercise that has been found to add years to your life — and in some instances, it only takes a few minutes of physical activity to make a big difference. Here are six other ways fitness has been linked to increased longevity.

Take the Stairs
In 2008, a small Swiss study found that sedentary people who switched from taking escalators and elevators to taking the stairs cut their risk of dying prematurely by 15 percent.

"This suggests that stair climbing can have major public health implications," lead researcher Dr. Philippe Meyer, told the BBC.

An earlier look at data from the Harvard Alumni Health Study also found that climbing 35 or more flights of stairs a week significantly increased longevity when compared to people who climbed fewer than 10 stories a week.

Bike... Faster!
Biking to work is a great way to squeeze exercise into your day, spend some time outside and even save on gas money. But a leisurely ride, while it might leave you less sweaty upon arrival at the office, won't do as much for your lifespan as if you really ride it out.

A study of Copenhagen cyclists found that men who pedaled the fastest lived more than five years longer than slower cycling men, and the fastest women cyclists lived almost four years longer.

Take a Swim
A 2009 analysis of data from the Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study found that men who swam regularly had about a 50 percent smaller risk of dying than sedentary men — but swimmers also had a lower mortality rate than men who walked and ran for their exercise.

Pick up the (Walking) Pace
A 2011 study found that people who naturally walk at a pace of one meter per second, about 2.25 mph, or faster, lived longer than their slower peers.

But walking pace might be more of an indicator of longevity rather than a way to increase it, the study's author cautioned. "Your body chooses the walking speed that is best for you, and that is your speed, your health indicator," lead researcher Dr. Stephanie Studenski told MyHealthNewsDaily. "Going out and walking faster does not necessarily mean you will suddenly live longer," she said.

Work Out For 15 Minutes a Day
Some think to get the full benefit of a good workout, you need to be sweating for a full 30 minutes — or longer. But with so many people struggling to find a spare 30 minutes, researchers have begun to investigate if a shorter sweat session could be just as good.

A 2011 study found when compared to sedentary people, 15 minutes of daily activity, like brisk walking, added three years to life expectancy, according to Reuters.

Kick It Up a Notch
Walking faster, cycling harder — there's an underlying theme to many of the benefits of exercise: intensity. Overall, vigorous activities seem to have more life-lengthening powers than nonvigorous activities, according to a 1995 study.

In fact, intense exercise may double the years added by moderate exercise, according to a 2005 study. Five days a week of walking for 30 minutes led to 1.3 to 1.5 additional years, The Washington Post reported, but intense exercise, like running half an hour five days a week, resulted in 3.5 to 3.7 extra years.

5 Warning Signs of Thyroid Issues



According to the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, about one in eight women will develop a thyroid problem in her lifetime. The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland in the lower neck that influences metabolism and the function of the kidneys, heart, liver, brain and skin.

It is important to make sure your thyroid is functioning normally - some common signs of abnormal function include:

Unexplained weight gain or loss. A common sign of a thyroid disorder, weight gain can indicate low levels of thyroid hormones, called hypothyroidism, while weight loss can indicate high levels, or hyperthyroidism.
Changes in energy, mood and sleep patterns. People with hypothyroidism may feel tired and depressed, while those with hyperthyroidism may be restless and irritable.
Feeling too hot or too cold. Hypothyroidism can lead to feeling cold, while excessive sweating and feeling too hot is a symptom of hyperthyroidism.
Changes in heart rate. A quicker or slower pace can indicate a thyroid issue.
Hair loss. This is common for either type. Note that once the disorder is treated, hair should grow back.
If you notice any of these symptoms, as well as any swelling in the neck area, talk with your physician. Simple tests can help determine if your thyroid is over- or under-functioning, and proper medications and lifestyle changes can help address any concerns.

I personally like to hang a bundle combination of basil, lavender and tansy in my open doorways and windows. I never have flies and we have very few insects that bother us. I also like to saturate a cotton swab with peppermint oil and run it along windows and entrances because spiders hate peppermint. Spiders also hate baking soda so sprinkling that at entrances and open windows will help keep them from coming inside which is especially helpful in the fall when they start retreating to warm inside shelter!

This one is super soothing to mind, body and spirit!

Do you have a favorite special herbal bath soak recipe? Please share if you do! I like to make my own bath salts using a combination of epsom salts, dead sea salt and baking soda to which I add ground lavender, lemon balm, spearmint and ground oats. So soothing, calming and really good for itching and irritated skin! When I want to treat mild pain vand/or sore muscles I add some ground valerian root and ground wood betony leaves and flowers. Works great! I would love to hear your own recipes and ideas!
