Here I am, complaining at times that (1) I don't have the proper gear to exercise today, (2) the weather is too hot/cold, (3) I need to buy more clothes to 'look good' while exercising...

Totally ashamed of myself! But not anymore! This is really an inspirational and motivational story! emoticon

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before, but I'm not able to watch these videos as they are for United States only. :( It sounds like it was a motivating story and I hope that someone here has found a way for me to watch it in Canada. Thanks in advance if you've found a way to do this.

Oh I LOVED this!! I needed to see this tonight! He is a hero to his people and that is SO amazing! I think that him having to take care of the track and clear it of rocks might make him a BETTER athlete...I remember my dad saying that the more work you put into something and the more it was YOURS the better you treated it or did at it....I think that he takes SO much responsibility for his sport that it pushes him to do it better...when everything is handed to you or made easy for you I think that you take it for granted ....he is amazing...this will stick with me for a LONG time!! THANKS!!

I just watched both videos with my two granddaughters (7 and 10). We were all impressed by what this man has accomplished by doing "the simple things well." I found his story very inspiring. Thank you so much for sharing it. I didn't watch the Olympics, and so would never have known about David Rudisha.

I'm really enjoying Spark Coach! You're giving me the motivation I need to get sparked!

A grateful SparkPerson,

I think that every person that makes it to the olympics really is an encouragement to all of us who want to reach our goals, but sometimes we make excuses for why we don't workout or why we don't eat well. I am one of those people, but fortunately I don't beat myself up and I get right back on track the very next day. I never want to lose this healthier lifestyle that I have achieved! I hope the rest of us can take something from this story! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Do the small things well. I am trying, really trying to grasp this within my own life. I tend to be a perfectionist, and I get overwhelmed.

I am trying to scale back everything I have learned in the books and go with the small things. Exercise, track, eat good foods, and drink that water, come to Spark for support and encouragement.

I am tired of lying to myself. I am ready to set boundaries and own my life. I want to treat myself like the treasure I am.

Spark Guy, thank you for sharing this story-I did see it on the Olympics (the part where they were moving the rocks for him to run. I think it's totally inspiring to see anyone from any country achieve the goals they have set for themselves. I applaud David, but I also applaud the Team USA Olympians for they, too, have terrific stories of sacrifice and achievement to reach London.

We all have the ability to reach goals, even if they are moving one pebble at a time...maybe it's just not eating that bite of sweets that you are craving at the moment...maybe it's to walk the stairs instead of take the elevator at work, maybe it's just to park farther from the store and get in a few extra steps...whatever your accomplishment, remember that it's the SMALL ones that add up to the great ones, and without the small ones, there would be no large ones!

I take inspiration from his personal and direct involvement in his success. Every rock he picked up was him putting his hands into it... getting them dirty...becoming a part of the process, not having others do everything for him and all he had to do was run. It is an entire mentality, engaging in every part of the process and I am sure it must make him more aware than most runners of the space he has to work in, the length he must run to the ground beneath his feet. He is thinking in all directions towards his goal, not just one line. I appreciate this story very much and I feel it encourages us to take personal and direct involvement in everything we do, every day. Doing simple things well on a daily basis sets us up for success.

Thank you for sharing his story.

You are right. I was born and raised in Africa and have never ran in my life. Africa is not all about rural areas. David worked hard and the result is what we all have witnessed. You can be whatever you want to be, everything depends on your goals, vision, and level of determination to achieve.

What most struck me was his humility. Sometimes we have to do the grunt work before we even get to the simple things. He was willing to do whatever it takes.

What a role model!

Although it took me a while to get past the erroneous claim, "Everybody in Africa, from a young age, in rural areas has to be a runner...," I was very inspired by Rudisha's story. I went to school with many Africans (from different countries) who came from rural areas, and they were not as fit as I was. What differentiates Rudisha and others who rise to Olympic greatness from any child anywhere who runs to school or to the store on a daily basis is their dedication to training and their willingness to put in the work, so that's what I will take away from this story. I may not make it to the Olympics, but I can still put in work to be the best that I can be.

Great story and great message! Doing simple things well - key to life as well as being healthy and fit!
I've been trying really hard to make simple things like choosing the healthiest foods, getting enough sleep, and exercising as much as I can each day, all part of my normal life. And the payoffs have been huge! I couldn't think of doing it any other way now.

Thank you Spark Guy! David's story and so many others shared during the Olympics are what make the Olympics so compelling for me. Watching the event and the athletes on the podium is certainly a "moment" but the stories of how they got there is something to carry with me and hold onto in my personal journey and there were so many stories that brought tears to my eyes and goose bumps. When he was interviewed just after winning AND establishing a new and significant world record what mattered most to him was what it means to his COUNTRY and not himself personally and that selflessness is so touching too - like you Spark Guy. Giving back and paying forward. Thank you!

Thanks for the message. I am motivated by Br. Colm for getting placed in a coaching job for which he had no experience and taking it to the world class level.

Rudisha's been given a gift and is doing everything he can with it. He seems far more grounded than many of our equally gifted athletes. It was very humbling watching him clear rocks and measure off his own finish line.

Also, he's got an absolutely gorgeous smile it made me happy just watching him.

Sparkguy thanks for choosing Rudisha as a motivator. I am Kenyan and I know how hard it is for them. Most of these runners from Kenya had to go for miles to school or fetch water etc (without shoes). They are really inspiring. Great stroy.

Wow! I can't express how thankful I am that you shared Rudisha's story. It will be one I will remember and refer to often.

I will keep his determined and confident face as he was running his last lap in my mind as a "go to" when I'm not having a "go to" day. His entire personality is intriguing.

Stories like this, the triumph in difficult circumstances, stick with me and inspire me.

One cannot put a price in this kind of motivation, and I am sure his story will motivate many for years to come.

Thank you so much!

Denise

p.s.have you ever watched the old movie Cool Runnings, based on the true story of the Jamaican bobsled team @ winter olympics? It is one of my all-time faves because of the unwavering spirit of these young men.

Hi Maggie -- sorry about that and thanks for letting me know -- I wasn't aware that there would be restrictions on viewing the videos. I'll see if I can find another one about him on Youtube that might tell his story.

SparkCheers!

I could not watch the video due to this reason: "Due to Olympic broadcasting regulations, NBC is only allowed to show Olympic competition video on the internet to users in the United States and U.S. Territories. " Please be mindful of your International members. I am living in New Zealand.

A Olympic participant is the cream of the crop... winning the Gold is the Cherry on Top!! All are amazing atheletes and are to be commended for the training ethics, goals, mindsets, etc. etc. I watch them and think to myself should have been me sometimes.... but, not possible anymore at 64 years of age.... but, I can be the best that I can be and learn from their dedication...Thanks SparkGuy, Coach!! emoticon emoticon

I can barely walk right now (post surgery - foot), but watching this made me feel like it might be possible to run someday. Seeing how he pushed his body forward and really stretched open his legs - it was fluid and it was beautiful. I love how they said he was humble. I'd believe it as the people I've met from East Africa are so sincere, sweet and humble.

Thank you for posting Chris.

Thanks for sharing this story. David's accomplishments show that one can get the best out of any situation. It all depends on how determined one is. This story has motivated me to strive to achieve my goals irrespective of the situations I find myself. Also, as I move on, I will encourage others around me to join me in living healthy.
I am inspired.
Thanks
Femi

I sent this out as a SparkMail to the team:
**

Hello SparkCoach Team

I hope you had a fun weekend and are ready for another great week!

One action I will take with SparkCoach to keep you motivated is to send out motivational stories -- especially different types of stories where some part of the story can motivate all of us to keep pushing towards reaching our goals.

Here's the first installment of that, and it's a good one :). It's the story of David Rudisha from Kenya and his Olympics story.

Here is a link to a 4- minute video on the NBC Olympics website -- this shares his background leading up to the Olympics:
www.nbcolympics.com/video/track-and-
field/david-rudisha-maasai-warrior-oly
mpic-champion.html

Then, here is a link to watch his incredible race in the Olympics if you didn't see it:

www.nbcolympics.com/video/track-and-
field/highlights-david-rudisha-sets-wr
-wins-800m-gold.html

Here are some points that motivate me from this story:

1) Rudisha is the best in history at his event -- yet he has to clear rocks from the track before he runs. Talk about having no excuses for not having what we need to work to reach our own goals!

2) I love what his coach says -- "It's not about facilities...it's about doing the simple things well." THIS is what SparkPeople is all about and it's why we put so much emphasis on consistency and the power of each choice in a day. Think about that -- Rudisha became the best in history at what he does by "doing the simple things well". What can YOU achieve in your life by "doing the simple things well"?

3) Huge "Wow" for the dynasty that Rudisha's Irish coach has built at this small school in Kenya. This is one of the points that gets me so excited about SparkCoach. I can't wait to point to all of the amazing goals our members reach as a result of having a coach push them to new heights.

4) It's fun to see Rudisha embrace being a role model to kids.

5) How can you not root for this guy! :)

How will David Rudisha motivation you to do the simple things well?

SparkCheers!

Chris (SparkGuy)
