Looks interesting.. I have been using cocoa butter from Wild Foods purchased on Amazon and adding my coconut oil. I suppose using cocoa nibs would give you the chocolate taste. or a good cocoa powder.

Today is day #1 without my mocha or chai latte. I've done ok...busy enough that I'm not dwelling on it. But I know in the next day or so I will be preoccupied by it.

I haven't been a true coffee drink (plain brew), but am willing to experiment to keep out of the coffee shops!

Rita,

Go to this site and see the FAQs of coconut oils. I also order my coconut oil from them and use expeller pressed. and I purchase 5 gallons at a time. which last me a long time. I use it in cooking and on my skin

healthytraditions.com/faq/#What_are_
th
e_differences_between_all_your_coconR>ut_oils

I wait til they have free shipping to order too. In winter or cold - coconut oil looks like shortening and in the summer heat or cooking it liquidfies. In winter I use the microwave so I can put it on my skin everywhere

I wish you luck with ti, Kate. At the price, it really is a luxury item, though interestingly enough, I've found it for $3 less a bag at the health food store, than they sell it at the grocery. Go figure.

Hi Ramona, no I haven't had a chance to try Swerve yet but I intend to. I don't always get to do things quickly since my car isn't running at the moment & I'm also on a very limited fixed income. I've googled it & know where I can buy it locally so I have it on the agenda when my check getts here in 2 weeks.

Thanks for the tip!

Kate, I can't tolerate artificial sweeteners as a rule (I get horrible gastric distress), but I can use Swerve (erythritol). Have you tried it?

It's a 1:1 substitution for sugar in any recipe. I find if I use only 3/4 of the amount called for in any recipe, I get the desired sweetness with out any aftertaste or cooling effect, as well. It comes in both granular, and powdered.

We very much appreciate the versatility it has given our keto journey.

Rita, you're right, BPC has to be hot to work, but if you're dreading tasting it, don't! BPC isn't a required beverage in any way. My Mr. has been keto for over a year, and he has never had a cup of BPC... and he never will.

Fat bombs may be more your thing, if you're looking for a supplementary fat option. Check these out:

ketodietapp.com/Blog/post/201

ulletproof-Fat-Bombs

...ALSO: you don't have to use coffee as your hot beverage. Add the fat to broth, or any tea for the same delicious drink. I use all of them (coffee, tea, broth) depending on my mood, and I enjoy them all. A tbsp. of cocoa powder and hot water also work and make a hot chocolate sort of beverage... but it needs some sweetener. My Mr. likes the broth and cocoa options.

There is no hard and fast 'right' way to do this.

I guess with the oils being in the coffee that it has to be hot coffee huh? I have only started drinking coffee again the past few months and I like it much better iced. But I can't imagine that cold. It just seems like something that would need to be chugged quickly.

Stop laughing guys! I know you have to be. You're talking about how yummy it is and I'm dreading just tasting it. Please give me any tricks you can to make it easier to get down. I do have a Nutrabullet.

I have a question about coconut oil. I went to buy some this weekend. I saw clear, liquid oil and thick, white-ish stuff in a jar. What is the stuff I'm suppose to use? It sounds disgusting as it is, (raw egg yolk and grease) emoticon but I want to give it a go. I want this to work. I want to do this right dang it!

Thanks for your bulletproof coffee recipe Mother Bear. I learned a lot from it, never having heard of cocoa butter discs or thieves essential oil before. Nor did I know there's a Bulletproof brand coffee out there. I'm happy with my Starbuck's French roast & I get it pretty cheaply from Costco so I think I'll stick with that for now.

I'm trying a new approach -- have started using heavy whipping cream instead of half-and-half in my coffee, the idea being to get gradually accustomed to a more greasy texture. So far so good. I also found an emulsifier in the garage -- I don't remember where I got it but I remember not knowing what it was until the discussion on this topic.

Baby steps ... LOL

Matilda, don't be sure about not being able to find Bulletproof brand coffee beans, and other Bulletproof products. I'm in Saskatchewan, and I can get them at my local health/natural food store.

I really enjoy the ground decaf coffee, the vanilla bean powder, and the snack 'cookies'... very keto, very dleicious.

I never heard of Bulletproof as a brand before. From what little research I have done, I sure can't get it locally (Ottawa, Canada). But I can make my own. And this thread has lots of great tips and recipe variations.

This is what I do for my bullet proof coffee

1 TBS coconut oil

2 cocoa butter disks ordered from Wild Foods

maybe some cinnamon or vanilla powder from Wild Foods

maybe Thieves essential oil a few drops

and if I need additional then I also add 1 TBS of butter - bought from local store at what I can afford.

into 2 cups of coffee stirred with a spoon

A regular blender should help, but it doesn't necessarily emulsify. If you still find you get an oil slick, you can pick up a stick blender for around $30, and you don't have to wash a blender every time you have a cup of coffee.

Ahhh, I see the difference! I don't have a Magic Bullet or anything like that, but I assume a regular old blender would work just as well. I'll try that tomorrow -- I'd really like to start having bulletproof coffee -- one easy way top raise my fat intake!

Thanks for the info!

Unless you emulsify it with a stick blender, the fat will rise to the top and sit there.

One of the reasons I use egg yolks is that 1 egg yolk emulsifies 1 tbsp. of fat and keeps it from separating out.

I couldn't get through my day without my Bamix... only appliance that gets used multiple times a day, for a variety of things.

I tried this recipe: 1 tbsp of coconut oil, 1 tbsp of grass fed butter and 1 tbsp of heavy cream in a cup of coffee -- it was so greasy I could hardly get it down! I assume I didn't do something correctly -- but if I did, I'm going to have to tinker with the recipe and build up my tolerance for liquid grease gradually! emoticon

Ramona, thanks for all the great ideas!!!

I've had to tailor my recipe for my own needs because I find it VERY difficult to hit my macros and calories on some days. I simple do not have much of an appetite, so my recipe is a bit extreme.

2 cups coconut or almond milk
2 TBSP of instant coffee
2 TBSP if stevia
2 TBSP of butter
2 -3 TBS of coconut oil
2-3 drops of vanilla

Some days it is the only thing I "eat" so I try to pack it with as much calories and fat as I can.

Oooooh Ramona, thanks for the Chai Butter Tea recipe, that looks yummy!!

And for the ones mentioning cinnamon - that is really good for any of us struggling with lowering blood glucose - cinnamon is good for that (as well as the other spices).

Ghee is made by removing the cholesterol containing protein solids, the stuff that will trip milk intolerances or allergies etc. I am that way with pasteurized homogenized corporate milk but I do much much better with ghee than I do with butter. Speaking of which, I need to make up some more ghee ....

I like this thread. Ramona makes her's like mine. Coconut oil/ghee (I don't tolerate milk proteins) with egg (powdered in my case only because I won a gallon of the stuff and need to use it up), cinnamon, vanilla, squirt of vanilla stevia, perhaps cocoa. Whip it up to make a good frothy head and I'm sated until well into the afternoon.

'Bulletproof Coffee' is a proprietary name invented and coined by Dave Asprey. Grass-fed butter and MCT oil are used for very specific reasons:

For a variety of reasons (preference, taste, availability of ingredients), most people come up with their own version involving 2 tbsp. of fat blended into a cup or so of beverage (coffee, tea, bone broth).

I personally love the concept of Bulletproof Coffee, and I drink some version of it every day!

...However, I am more influenced by Mark Sisson in this matter, than I am by Dave Asprey, so my version isn't typical.

-- I use coconut oil rather than MCT oil... many people don't tolerate MCT oil very well, and there is a fair bit of research that would suggest it's not a great metabolic choice. There are no user issues with CO, and I happen to believe food in its whole state is best.

-- I use butter (I like the taste)... and butter was chosen over cream because it is predominantly fat, has minimum/if any of the dairy issues attached that cream does for some people, and is more nutrient dense than cream (higher in natural MCTs). Weirdly enough, I find the energy boost with butter is greater than that made with cream. "?"

-- I add egg yolks, or even sometimes whole eggs (a la Mark Sisson), in part because I have recently discovered I can't tolerate dairy (spikes my blood glucose), and I no longer drink coffee with cream. The egg yolks make it really rich and creamy, and I have a low-calorie, LCHF meal-in-a-cup that keeps me satiated for hours. I have also found it to be extremely room-temperature stable (it won't separate out). Every egg yolk has the ability to emulsify up to 1 tbsp. fat perfectly.

-- I use a variety of hot liquid: broth, coffee, tea... and they are ALL delicious!

So, my personal recipe: 1 tbsp. CO, 1 tbsp. butter, 2 egg yolks (occasionally whole eggs), a few shakes of salt, and 1.75 cups of hot beverage.

(2 cups decaf coffee, 1 tbsp. butter, 1 tbsp. Coconut oil, 2 egg yolks, cinnamon, maple extract, salt)
345 calories - 93% fat, 6% protein, 1% carbs

If I'm using coffee or cocoa powder I add a shake or two of cinnamon and a splash of vanilla. If I'm using broth I add Chipotle pepper, garlic powder and poultry seasoning, and instead of butter I use either Schmatz or pork belly lard. DELICIOUS! Try it with broth or the cocoa powder and see what you think. My Mr. is a hot chocolate drinker, and he finds it an acceptable substitute without disrupting his goals... and I almost prefer the broth version to coffee!

I know someone is going to ask about the raw eggs: if you first blend the yolks in with the melted fat, and then slowly drizzle in the hot beverage as you continue to blend, the hot liquid cooks the eggs much as it would in a custard. I've had no issues at all.

Here's another delicious ancient recipe along the same lines (many tribal/ancient people have some version of this beverage... and probably where Dave Asprey first got the idea):

...and for anyone who hasn't tried the Bulletproof brand of coffee beans, you may want to consider doing so. I thought it was all just hype, and I refused to pay the exorbitant shipping cost to Canada for already over-pried coffee. However when my local health-food store started carrying it, I bought a package. My experience suggests there may be something to it:

-- regular coffees gave me heartburn (had to quit drinking coffee for two years), Bulletproof brand does not.
-- regular coffees gave me stomach aches, Bulletproof brand does not.
-- regular coffees still give me hot flashes, Bulletproof brand does not.
-- regular coffees spike my Blood glucose, Bulletproof brand does not.

Just food for thought.

Oh! And for those who may prefer to chew their coffee:

Dr. Jason Fung: "Holy consensus, Batman. With so many 'experts' from Michelle Obama to the USDA to virtually all of the medical professionals (including doctors and dieticians) agreeing that 'Eat Less, Move More' is the way to go, you might think that it is 100% unquestionably true. But here's a queer thought... if we all agree that we know the cure for obesity, and we've spent billions on educations and programs - why are we getting fatter? In other words, why does this 'cure' suck so bad?

I add 1 tbsp of coconut oil, 1 tbsp of grass fed butter and 1 tbsp of heavy cream. I also have to add a packet of sweet and low. I can't seem to do coffee without it. I have it first thing in the morning (5 a.m.) I don't get hungry until almost lunchtime.

I'm looking for recipes for Bulletproof Coffee. The guy at the health food store gave me one, but it doesn't seem right to me. I love coffee & think Bulletproof Coffee would make a good snack to tide me over between meals.

Thanks!
