Hello, Bethiie. Welcome to the rants. Yes, those qualify as insomnia rants. :D

I'd suggest you have a small snack of milk/lowfat cheese and some multi-grain crackers/bread just before bed. When your blood sugar drops after you've been asleep for about 3-4 hours, you have nightmares, or what I call stress dreams.

Give this a try and let me know what happens. Also, a Sleep Diary helps deal with insomnia.

Good luck, babes,
Renie

Welcome, Unalii, and good luck with your sleep. Try keeping a sleep diary to help with your sleep habits. You are right that it is important to keep on a schedule in order to get the sleep you need to be happier and healthier.

Let us know how you're doing. OK?

My rant for the day is that I found out the pharmacy got my prescription for Lunesta last Friday and didn't bother to call and let me know. So I got another one from the doc today. A lot of good that did me over the weekend.

My second rant is being in the donut hole and my meds costing me an arm and a leg, as well as half my wallet and a credit card. I hate this junk. Ya gotta have the meds, but can't afford them at full price. I hope the donut hole goes away BEFORE I die. This is ridiculous. At least my doc gave me some samples to try for the next month on my new Rxs.

We both just sat there with our heads in our hands, and shook them, trying to figure out what to do for me. The Endo doc didn't do the scope test he was supposed to do, so I was right and it was a total waste of time and money. It's pretty bad when your doc is as frustrated as you are. Criminy!

Hang in there, troups. Somehow, we'll make it. If I can get some sleep tonight, things should look rosier in the a.m.

Good night and sweet dreams, one and all, emoticon

They help you relax and get in touch with your body. They don't really raise your heart rate or burn a lot of calories. They are more about being aware of how you feel as you do the movements. They are also good for warm up before aerobics.

Kinda hard to find DVD for gentle ones like Tai Chi and Qui Quong here, usually aerobic is much easier to get (maybe get lucky in online, though) or I can try find it in YouTube. How does either these two help me with my sleep and get fit?

Tai Chi and Qui Quong are similar but not the same. They are both a series of gentle movements. Yoga and Pilateds might be more strenuous. Can you get a dvd? Going to a class, then coming home to go to bed would probably not work to well.

Dunno about Tai Chi or Qui Quong which the classes are available at night but about 30-minute drive from home (not a good idea unless I learn the moves to do it myself at home). How about pilate? I know several basic moves (learned that from a trainer) that good for correcting my posture and strengthening the core and there are some I can even do in bed.

Thanks, Renie, I'll try that. I like take cold shower before sleep as the house is quite hot and sometimes stuffy, so the shower is refreshing enough to feel clean for sleep but not that so cold that I stay awake and also because we're no longer have hot water (problem with gas for hot water, something about the pipe system). Maybe I can try to limit my night workout, either make it as short as possible if I have to do at night or try do more short exercises throughout the day, do exercises before nightfall/dusk.

Fathin: I feel your pain, and think one of the important things to get some sleep is set up and stay on a schedule as much as possible before you try adjusting it. If you NEED a night light on, I'd suggest the dim one. As far as the A/C or fan, how hot is it outside and how cool do you like your bedroom? If you're just using it for the white noise, use the fan--less electricity.

A lot of folks just can't exercise at night, they get too pumped. Also, a shower usually wakes you up, soooo ... if you must wash the sweat off, use a warm bath.

Let us know what you come up with, sweetie. We might all learn something to help us.

Sweet dreams,
Renie

I think I've problem with making the bedroom comfortable - to keep the air-con on or switch to fan? Use the very dim light or a little bit brighter (depends on how scared I am sleeping alone, haha)? I think I need to stop working out at night but sometimes I sleep much deeper, sometimes I feel like too fresh. Looks like I'm just confused how to get a nice night sleep.

Thanks, everyone. The kicker is that I hardly EVER take naps. When I've gotten to that point in the past, it was because I was really sick. So it makes me nervous.

When I can't sleep, I have a tendency to graze until all hours of the a.m. I do take ProBiotics and eat yogurt with fruit. Also, Prilosec for GERD. If that isn't working, I stay awake coughing too, KickingIt. What a mess. It's like taking one step forward and ten back.

Last night I actually got some good, restful sleep without pills. Even tho I took many bathroom breaks, I was able to go back to bed and sleep. I felt pretty good when I got up this a.m. It's been quite a while since I've enjoyed a restful night. Thank the Lord, they do come along every once in a while.

My doctor's appt got goofed up today, but at least I was able to have some fun, girlie talking lunch with my gal friends from high school. There were about 12 of us there this time. Being with friends and laughing is great medicine.

Wishing everyone a great night's sleep tonight. Let us know how you did and what didn't work that had you ranting. emoticon emoticon

Hugs,
Renie

Hi Everyone,

I've been enjoying the rants and suggestions.

I have the perfect bedtime routine that works wonderfully for me.....when I stick with it. Lack of consistency is my main obstacle. Also I have to stop eating at least 3 hours prior to bed otherwise my G.I. reflux makes me cough and keeps waking me up.

Renie, I used to take naps too...which led to staying up later....which led to eating later...which let to (see above). But I forced myself to stay awake until bedtime. It took almost 2 weeks to get out of that habit, so try and stick with it.

Renie have you tried probiotics, they work really good with meds, also if I have to take meds I take them with organic plain yoghurt with a little fruit, again the good acididophilus, helps with stomach acid etc. It balances the natural flora in your gut, just a thought.

I'm glad I'm not alone, Nas. I don't eat out very much any more, so when I do, I have a tendency to think I have to make up for lost time--or some other foolish idea. I should have boxed up that last portion and took it home for another meal. Or given it to my Birthday Sister and her family. Her daughter is tall and slender so she can get away with eating pastas, etc.

I had the no-sleep last night and then the drop-over nap spell this afternoon again. I'm not liking these. They remind me of when I got toxic from one of my meds. Plus I've had hives again this evening. Not a good thing.

Hopefully, we can all get some rest, if not right down SLEEP tonight, everyone. God bless you and hugs,

Renie

My other rant has nothing to do with insomnia as such but irritating none the less. Wish Microsoft would understand my name is not a spelling mistake. Laughed over the steak diaper thanks. I hate steak so never have much prefer fish but small ones. Sleep around 11 at night & awake around 4 am to pray then toss around.

Fish oil is an omega 3 fatty acid, Evening Primrose Oil is an omega 6 fatty acid. Other oils that may be helpful are Borage and Flax. They are all essential fatty acids which the body uses to make prostaglandins, which are anti-inflammatory hormones. They are all available at drugstores in capsules. Flax you can buy in grocery stores as whole seeds which have to be ground before eaten.

Now that I am long past peri-menopause I switched from Evening Primrose oil to omega 3-6-9 which is less expensive. If you are very gardeny you could grow the Evening Primrose and press the seeds for the oil.

I was taking the Evening Primrose oil for fibroids which were causing Mother Nature to lose her mind and try to kill me! The crack GYN I went to wanted to burn the fibroids out and wouldn't listen to a word about the Evening Primrose oil which I had discovered while waiting to get an appt. Of course he was the surgeon who was going to do the operation. He wasn't going to make any money if I found something to get Mother Nature back under control.

So I continued to take it thoughout the duration, about two years, and Mother Nature stayed reasonable until she stopped visiting!

While I researched Evening Primrose oil and other oils I read about other conditions that I had had throughout my life for which it was helpful. I think I had a defiency in essential fatty acids all my life.

One other thing I found that got Mother Nature under control for a few hours: Pumpkin Pie!
I know pumpkin in high in vitamin A but when I tried taking a supplement it didn't work. Must be something else in the pumpkin.

I don't think it matters but I take them in the morning with everything else. They are nutritional supplements so if you forgot one you can just take it when you remember.

I'm still having a lot of trouble getting to sleep and staying to sleep. I'm getting really frustrated. I've been forcing myself to stay up in the afternoon when I feel like I'm going to fall flat on my face, but that's not helping either.

I don't envy you your hot flashes during the night especially. Nothing is more miserable. My sister is going through the same thing and hating life right now.

I'm going to get some fish oil to help my feet and I'm getting my sister some Evening Primrose oil too.

Take care everyone and hopefully we'll all get some quality sleep tonight. Tell someone you love them before bedtime.

The fish oil and Evening Primrose oil may help with the hot flashes. I took Evening Primrose oil for another peri-menopasual condition (which it did control, so that I avoided surgery) and my peri-menopausal symptoms were not too bad.

I'm with you on keeping dogs in at night! My old nieghborhood had a skunk family behind my house. They were never any trouble except when the nieghbor let his dog loose in the street at night. He would go after them and get sprayed. People wanted to get rid of the skunks of course, couldn't understand if you leave them alone they don't make trouble. They never even got into garbage cans. One morning as I was leaving for work I opened the door and stepped out. There was Mis Skunk on the sidewalk not two feet away. I just opened that door and stepped back in! She took her cue and left!

I can't stand people that leave puppies outside crying all night long!

ok my apologizies to dog lovers, but if you have a dog, you should keep it in at night or at least gag it before putting it out for the night, and if that said dog does not bark but howls, it should be let lose to go live with the wolves.

Chris: That is wonderful news. I'm going to have to go get some very soon. I'm already burping from my stomach irritation, soooo ...

MMCCAUSLA: You will be safe here with no holding anyone back from reaching their goals. This is just where we can rant and get things off our chests, plus share a few things that work with others in the same situation.

The problem with insomnia is that it is usually so deep-rooted by the time we try to do something about it. You just have to slowly sneak up on it a little bit at a time. I'd suggest starting a Sleep Diary so you can keep track of the things you try and whether they help or not. It isn't going to happen over night, so just take one baby step at a time. I'd start out by suggesting turning off the TV and computer every night at the same time about an hour before bedtime. Write these two things down in your Diary along with the other things you do to get ready for bed: Jammies, brush teeth, brush hair (or have someone else brush it), take meds, etc. I like to read, so I write down: I will read for about an hour and then turn off my reading lamp and sleep.

C'mon in. The water is great. Let us know if any of these things work for you. OK?

Hugs,
Renie

I joined that team goal of sleeping 7 hours five times a week, thinking that sounded reasonable for a start. It's been two weeks and I have not gotten more than three hours per night. Needless to say I quit the goal. Don't want to hold back the team lol.

The fish oil comes in a capsule that is rather large and sometimes produces fishy tasting burps! However I have been taking it for a couple years, don't have the burps anymore. I think it really helped with my tendonitis and with borderline high cholesteral which went from "ok" to "good" to "very good!" at last checkup.

I also had some mild carpel tunnel symptoms in my wrist which is gone now. Years ago while riding my bike my hand slipped off the handle bar, pulling my wrist back and my thumb all the way back up againest my arm. After the thumb healed I still had arthritis-like pain in the wrist joint and carpel tunnel in the thumb and first two fingers. It is all gone now, I think it due to the fish oil.

Anjay: Your hubby sounds like a real character. Glad the two of you can joke about it. Laughter is a great medicine.

Chris: Those sound like some great ideas. The milk is definitely looking like the culprit, huh? Does the fish oil come in caplets/gel capsules? Otherwise it seems like it would be like gulping castor oil. Ugh. My mother-in-law made me drink a small bottle of that stuff and then took me on a ride in the foothills in an old pickup because I was a week overdue with her first grandchild. No, it didn't work. I still went another week. Ahhhh, those were the good old days. emoticon

I couldn't sleep then either. GRRRR! I wonder if the fish oil would help my poor crippled feet. Hmmm? Did it help with the pain?

Do you take fish oild? It might help some.

I was doing really good with my Achilles heel tendonitis, was pain free for about a year, then it came back. I am starting to think it might be conected with milk, which I started drinking again before it came back.

I wear a leather with polymere brace through the day, and sadly I wear a padded brace at night my husband calls it the oven mitt without fingers, he doesn't mind this brace at night as when my arm spsams if he is in the way it does not hurt as much lol, the last splint was rigid plastic, that one he called the terminator splint. lol!!
So I guess my rant is wish I could sleep with no brace on!!

Terrific rants, everyone. Tracey, those are great suggestions for those whose minds won't quit racing all night. A fan or just the hum of my oxygen tank does the trick for me. Also, writing down in your Sleep Diary what things are racing through your mind really works.

Pain is a major issue with a lot of us insomniacs. We need a magic wand to wave over our bodies when they just won't quit hurting.

Anjay: Sometimes wrapping a warm towel or a blue gel ice pack around a sore joint will help. You may have to use some Voltaren or some other OTC arthritis creme. But as others have mentioned, bracing your wrist is helpful for a SHORT period of time to keep from injuring it again, but not atrophe the muscles.

Chris: If you can sleep in your lazyboy, why not sleep there? Who says you have to be in your bed? Go for it girlfriend. Unless you really like to flop around on your trampoline. lol.

Let's all try some deep breathing and relaxation techniques tonight and see if that helps. Are we ready, team?

Oh, yes, and HUGS are very important too, so here's yours,
Renie emoticon

Here's my rant: I'm beginning to think I shouldn't bother going to bed at all. I sleep better in the lazyboy. I think I'll just take an evening nap, then spend the next eight hours exercising on a trampoline cause thats all I'm doing in bed anyway!

The last few nights I have been listening to American Indian flute music or African drumming/chanting while falling asleep. It has helped a lot! I focus on the music enough that I don't get the obsessive looping tape-recorded messages going through my brain when I'm trying to relax, but since there's no words to the songs, I don't focus on it *so much* that the music itself keeps me awake.

The wrinkles in our life create the wrinkles on our face. The wrinkles on our face portray the attitude we carry about the wrinkles in our life. That is why it is important to learn to laugh at the wrinkles in life. Laugh wrinkles look better than frown wrinkles!

If you don't have a brace a cycling glove might help relieve your wrist pain. It provides support for your wrist. Or a wrap such as you might put around a twisted ankle.

Oh Renie that is too funny, brought tears to my eyes. My rant of the day/night is "I wish I could turn the pain off so I could get dsome sleep"!! I have a very very sore wrist, it started last night and has continued, I pray it settles down, but bedtime is fast approaching
Night all

I would certainly hope not. I did slug my husband in the mouth while having a dream that he'd done something rude to me. I was shocked and somehow pleased that I stood up for myself. :D

Do you have problems with insomnia? Or have you found some interesting tidbits that help you sleep?

Hugs,
Renie

Write about your rants, or the things you should do to get some genuine sleep, add some things you've found that actually works.

When I have a sleep study, I still keep hoping the docs will be able to tell me WHY I can't get continuous, restful SLEEP, other than needing a CPAP and/or Oxygen! Why don't I get REM sleep? Why do I need oxygen at night? Why can't I fall asleep and stay asleep until morning?

ARGH!

I know: Calm down, drink some Camomile tea, do my deep breathing and relaxation exercises, write in my Sleep Diary, say my prayers, keep to a schedule, don't sleep in on the weekends, avoid bright bathroom lights, use a fan as a white noise machine, use soothing herbs, get some sunshine, keep in touch with family and friends ... what did I miss? Oh, yes, if you're worried about stuff, write it down in your Sleep Diary.

What helps with RLS/WEB and diabetic Neuropathy? Has your spouse/significant other threatened separate beds, bedrooms, or houses if you kick him/her one more time? Does your snoring keep you and everyone on the block awake?

Can you think of anything else? Please add your Pet Peeves. What works or doesn't work for YOU?

Luvies,
