Anything Can Be Overcome

Even when it seems like you have nowhere left to turn, there is a solution just waiting for you around the corner. Always.

The journey that each of us makes throughout our time here on earth will have hardship as often as it is touched by triumphs of joy. When we encounter adversity, the stress we feel can wear away, even grind down our optimism, eventually convincing us that the hardships we face are too overwhelming that they cannot be overcome. In truth, there is no situation so dire, no challenge so great and no choice so bewildering that it cannot be overcome. Though we may believe that all avenues have been blocked, even closed to us or that our most conscientious efforts have come to naught, we are never without the bounds of possibilities, options. They may be veiled in doubt, but they are there. When we are honest with ourselves with regard to this most simple fact, we can overcome anything because we will never stop looking for a solution to the challenges before us.

Self-trust coupled with solid planning is the ultimate antidote to adversity's tendency to inspire disillusionment in our minds. As difficult as the obstacle seems at the time we are in full throws of battle, it is no match for the love of a supportive universe that has been a part of our lives since the day of our births and shall be forevermore. We become misguided by our fears as this gives rise to the idea that there are just some problems that are without solutions. However, when we believe in our capabilities and dedication to the devising of some form of resolution, we will be surprised to discover that paths that were once blocked, closed do miraculously open. Even if all you can do is change your perspective to turn an obstruction into an opportunity for growth, we will have found the hope that is that inherent ingredient of all hardship.

Remember that destiny is a result of our own design. Even when it seems we have nowhere left to turn, there is a solution somewhere just waiting. The only insurmountable hurdles are the ones we produce within our own minds -- and these can only exert power over us if we let them. Uncertainty will always be a part of our existence, but perseverance and mindfulness will never fail to see us through to the other side of any hardship where joy thrives. Try and remember that no matter what life places at our feet, there is absolutely no situation that cannot be resolved with time, love, support and friendship bringing jubilation with it. Joy cometh in the morning.

TODAY Is MY tomorrow. It's up to ME to shape it, To TAKE CONTROL and seize EVERY opportunity. The POWER is in the choices I make EVERY day. I eat well, I live well I SHAPE ME!

THE EMPOWERED LIFE. EXPECT IT . BELIEVE IT. RECEIVE IT.
The human will is the most incredible thing. It's what keeps us going when everyone else expects us to quit.

THIS MEANS WAR AGAINST FAT:
I'm too positive to be doubtful, too optimistic to be fearful, and too determined to be defeated.

Haha! Definitely doing the dance of joy for you. You deserve it.

Yes, I would have to say that’s true (having those doubting thoughts) about any major project we undertake. BUT . . . deep down you KNOW it will be good! And you’re so right, it is a series of steps, small goals that gets you to where you want to be. Good for you having accountability buddies! That’s golden.

Most important msg. : never give up!

HUGS and good luck as you travel along this path to publication!

How To Cross The Finish Line

I am in the midst of two long-term goals. One, writing a book. Tada! I’ll pause while you dance with joy. All done? Thank you very much for that. I assure you I will celebrate. The other is becoming the healthiest me I can be; weight loss. This is one is a huge check mark on my life's to-do list. The convergence of my deadline over the next year, maybe even two leads me to think about the rewards of completion, of crossing the finish lines—real and metaphorical—of life. And I am also thinking about what it takes to stick with a long-term goal. In that spirit, I offer some of what helps me.

Recognize that it is hard for everyone.

Both writing a book and weight loss are difficult, as is running a marathon, starting a business, losing a substantial amount of weight, and any other larger long-term goals to which you might set your mind to accomplishing. Even though this is my first book and certainly not my first attempt at weight loss, I know I will have some low moments when I think I will never finish, the book wouldn’t be any good, no one will want to read it. This weight loss is taking too long. I keep derailing. You know, I know that there is always going to be a point in the midst of writing a book when one thinks they won’t finish, no one will want to read it, it won’t be any good. Do you know what I've noticed? I've noticed that just about every writer says the same. The trick is to push through—a day of writing bad sentences is better than a day of writing no sentences. It means you have something to work on. Eventually, the good sentences will come. As in weight loss the process, the achievements will become noticeable. Patience is KEY.

Big goals are really a series of small goals.

Writing a book is like driving a car at night. ''You can only see as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way." It is an apt metaphor for all long-term goals; break them up into incremental, day-by-day or week-by-week achievable goals.
The advice is prevalent because it is the truth, and it works. We work for a reward on a very short-term basis. Motivation is really the result of a series of decisions to keep working. We are more likely to do that if positive feedback does not come only once a year.

Friends can hold you accountable along the way.

Since my book is about my life, there had to be a mention of friends in it somewhere. The truth is they are essential to the process. No matter the goal. Writing is a lonely profession. While you are ultimately accountable to as the primary editor, your days are spent alone at your desk. So it has been for me also in my weight loss journey. However, throughout this journey, I have had two friends who serve as weekly accountability buddies (shout out to my sister Joyce and Leslea!). We are all engaged in creative endeavours and we must account for what we’ve done over the last week and what we plan to do over the next week, every single week. It helps. It works. It’s why fitness and weight loss apps try to get you to join forces with other members who inevitably become friends and mentors.

Cultivate a growth mindset.

We need to recognize the difference between what is termed a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. In a fixed mindset, people believe that their intelligence and talent are fixed and cannot be developed further. They believe it is talent alone that dictates success. In a growth mindset, by contrast, “People believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and putting in hard work.” This framework has been essential for me in writing my book. When the words and sentences don’t come, when I can’t grasp the ideas I want to convey, I tell myself to just keep thinking about it, that though my “talent” seems limited in the moment, it can rise to the occasion eventually through hard work.

Train your brain to help.

Training for any long-term goals is not just physical, it has it's psychological influences as well. Okay, so writing a book does not require the same physical stamina as weight loss—however, both requires resisting the siren call of the refrigerator and the quilt of the essentialness of every household chore that you're putting off on your priority list. But the principle is the same. Endurance, is “the struggle to continue against a mounting desire to stop.” You need to train the brain to recognize that those signals are in fact surmountable.

Looking backwards has its own rewards.

The truth is that there is plenty of work ahead for me. I am not actually “done.” Editing, production, marketing all lie ahead if I should decide I want to publish my work. It will be another year, perhaps even two before I am anywhere being close to finished t For now, however, I am just going to take time to savour the accomplishment. Sometimes we are so quick to succumb to discouragement or roadblocks. So it is with weight loss and becoming the healthiest you, you can be.

If I were to give any kind of advice or encouragement it would be this.

WE ARE OVERCOMERS

If there is one thing I am learning and gleaning from my own present adversity is that:

The only thing constant is change. No matter how tough your current situation of adversity, it is only a temporary learning curve.

Just as death and taxes are unavoidable in life, so is adversity. In fact, life is full of ups and downs, victories and struggles, and huge momentum shifts. We all know and accept that this is just how life is. Adversity is a large part of that experience as well. It’s a part of our lives that many of us would ideally like to fast-forward. However, adversity doesn’t need to be at all negative experiences. In fact, dealing with adversity can become very positive and nourishing that can lead to massive growth and development.

The problem with adversity is that most people never see it in a positive light. In fact, most see adversity as a sign that the entire world is against them; out to get them. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth.

In many instances, adversity provides an opportunity to learn those tough lessons that help us improve our lives and circumstances going forward. However, in order to see adversity in this way, we must first acknowledge some truths that might initially be somewhat difficult to stomach.

The Truth About Adversity
It is often said that it’s not what happens to us but how we react to what happens that makes all the difference in the end.

When facing adversity it’s important to acknowledge that we always have the freedom to choose how we react in response to people, events, and circumstances. We can either respond very negatively or we can choose to respond optimistically and productive way that can potentially open doors that we weren’t aware of before.

To dig even deeper; all of us have the freedom to choose our own beliefs, words, thoughts, and the attitude we bring into every situation. In fact, we also have the freedom and right to choose the level of effort and determination to bring forth into every moment.

When you have a thought, this immediately triggers emotional reactions. Therefore, if you think/talk negatively, this will cause you to be stressed, fearful or overwhelmed. And this certainly has nothing to do with the situation, but rather everything to do with how you have interpreted the circumstances.

Given all of this, it’s clear that how we handle adversity has nothing to do with what happens to us, but rather everything to do with the “kind of person” we bring forward. As such, it’s absolutely paramount that we accept full responsibility for the role we play in each moment. You are after all in the driver’s seat. However, it is easy to forget this power when your first reaction is an emotional one.

With that in mind, it’s important to acknowledge that the only things that matter are:

How you see the obstacle you're being faced with…

How you react to the adversity…

How you maintain your composure while facing the adversity…

The narrative you tell yourself in what is happening…

It essentially always comes down to the narrative you tell yourself. In fact, it is the story that will either empower or deflate you emotionally; it is the story that will either help you move forward or hold you back; it is the story that will either open the doors or send you into the pits of despair. Adversity has absolutely everything to do with the narrative! The story you tell yourself is what effectively determines your next steps going forward.

When Adversity Strikes

When adversity strikes you must immediately make adjustments to any expectations you have been holding onto. All the plans you had in place may not be viable any longer. Holding onto these plans and expecting that there is only one path forward in reaching your goals will no longer effectively deal with the present circumstances. In fact, resistance at this stage will immediately create internal conflict. This forces you into a downward spiral into the pits of despair.

What you must do instead is immediately adjust any plans or expectations you had coming into the circumstances. To do this you will need to acknowledge that:

You fully accept what has happened without resistance…

Accept that some things are out of your personal control…

No matter how well you plan ahead, things often do not go according to plan. There will always be unexpected obstacles and setbacks that will completely derail your efforts.

This is not the time to whine and complain about the circumstances. Success is never a straight line. In fact, the route that gets you from the present to your desired goals will take many twists and turns. Very little may be under your direct control. Therefore, nothing is really predictable.

We must fully accept the fact that you are facing a “plot twist”. This plot twist is of course comes in the form of a setback that must now be dealt with. Now, of course, you could just completely remove yourself and do nothing. Yes, you most certainly could, but doing nothing changes nothing. Worse yet, doing nothing could actually make things worse. Keep that in mind when you’re frozen in time and too overwhelmed to deal with the issue.

Right now, right here, in the moment. This is your time and place to do something meaningful. It may mean that you will need to stretch yourself, to even act out of desperation in righting things. In fact, this state of desperation could be the catalyst that sparks your creativity and helps you move forward through this circumstance in an optimal way. However, this creativity will never come if your thought process about the problem BECOMES THE PROBLEM.

Just think about it. How you perceive the problem could, in fact, be the problem. If you see the setback as a negative experience then you are closing yourself from an alternate perspective. In fact, how you view the issue might be very different to how another person sees the same circumstance. And, because they see things differently than you, this allows them to react to the setback in a more optimal, beneficial way.

Now of course when it seems as though the world is conspiring against you, it’s difficult to think positively. This is true. You must therefore step back in order to calm your emotions.

Take a moment to remove yourself to take a few deep breaths and tell yourself:

I am calm and collected…

I can see things rationally…

I’ve not attached myself to a perceived outcome anymore…

I am open to the possibilities that may now exist…

I doing this, you acknowledge that you have full control of your mental and emotional faculties. Moreover, you acknowledge that you are open to possibilities that there might be something here that you weren’t expecting to potentially take advantage of.

This is, of course, is all very well and good. As such, if you’re having trouble opening yourself up to the possibilities, then reflect on the narrative you have created about these circumstances. Then, ask yourself:

What have I told myself about this?

Is it empowering or a hindrance to me?

If it is a hindrance and keeping you from seeing the situation in a more positive light, then immediately get to work on changing your thought process. Yes, I do mean literally make the changes. You need to change the thought process that will give yourself that empowerment that can help get you through this setback far more effectively. Only then will you see the problem in the most optimal light.

Now of course, when we’re emotionally wrapped up in a situation it’s difficult to genuinely change your thought process to an empowering story that can help deal with this situation most effectively. Changing our story requires a perspective shift. It requires you to shift how you think. With that in mind, you might find it helpful to think about your setback in the following ways:

Failure today might have saved me from a greater disaster tomorrow…

I haven’t chosen this, but I decide how it affects me…

When setbacks come, I must work twice as diligently…

Every situation is an opportunity for me to reach positively…

The challenge makes me a better person…

The obstacle is an advantage, not a hindrance…

What matters is what I do with what happens…

What impedes me, also empowers me…

My efforts will determine my results…

Obstacles are the fuel for my ambition…

This sucks, but I will come out even more competent on the other side of this…

These are just some of the ways you can think more optimally about your circumstances. In fact, thinking about your setback in this way will help you to effectively change the story you are telling yourself. And when you change your story, a world of possibilities opens up for you.

The final step of this process is, of course, to acknowledge that your setback is a problem that most certainly can be resolved. Once you acknowledge this you can then effectively work on solving this problem. Ask yourself:

What went wrong?

What is the problem here?

What can be done to improve the situation?

What am I potentially missing that could be of value?

The Value of Adversity?

Facing adversity is never fun, but as we’ve already discussed, of course, depends on how we view and react to the circumstances. But let’s come to acknowledge the fact that adversity sucks, will always suck, but it is a part of life and we must, therefore, learn to deal with it and make the most of what we are dealt with. In this context let’s take a look at the value of adversity.

To begin with, adversity often challenges us in new ways, helping us gain valuable experiences that we would not have been exposed to if we always played things safe. And of course, this is of value because new experiences help build and strengthen character, which effectively helps deal with even greater levels of future adversities. In other words, adversity actually provides an opportunity to develop mental strength and resilience. But there is more…

Adversity provides an opportunity to practice challenging one's self in new ways; to practice patience, humility and courage; to practice self-discipline; to practice becoming more resourceful and so much more. In fact, above all else, adversity provides the opportunity to grow, develop and learn from the experience in ways that you never planned or imagined.

What can I learn from this experience?

Given what I now know, how can I do better next time?

And of course, as you grow and learn to think about the adversity you face in more optimal ways, new paths open that can lead to breakthroughs and even new unexpected beginnings.

Yes, it is certainly possible that you may not be able to successfully overcome some of the problems faced. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that you have come to a dead-end. What seems like a dead-end might, in fact, be that perfect opportunity for a new beginning that can take you down a more advantageous path towards even bigger and better goals.

Breaking down new paths in this way does, however, require personal initiative, a little creativity, and tenacity on your part. In fact, you must stubbornly acknowledge to yourself that:

I refuse to allow this to break me…

The attitude you bring to every situation matters. In fact, it matters above all else. With the right attitude, you will be able to get through anything no matter how grim or dire your circumstances. And of course, your attitude reflects the thoughts you allow yourself to dwell upon consistently while working through the adversity. These thoughts, of course, manifest in internal dialogue and this internal dialogue often comes in the form of the questions you persistently ask yourself.

The questions you ask yourself either empowers you or weakens your resolve. Empowering questions will certainly help keep you focused on solutions that help move you forward while weakening questions are focused on blame, regret, excuses and complaining. For instance, questions such as:

Why does this always happen to me?

Why do I always make a mess of things?

Why didn’t I just do this earlier, then I wouldn’t be in this mess?

Why is it that I just can’t catch a break?

Why does it seem as though the universe is out to get me?

These are of course weakening questions that will get you absolutely nowhere. These are the types of questions you should avoid asking at all costs. Instead, you need to refocus your energies on asking more empowering questions that will move closer to the desired outcome. For instance, you could ask yourself:

What are the benefits of my situation?

What’s the value in experiencing this setback?

What’s the opportunity here that I could take advantage of?

How can I turn things around and take advantage of my situation?

How can this help me move forward in a better way?

The first set of questions will typically throw you into an endless loop that will keep you stuck, while the second set of questions will open doors to new opportunities and insights that will unlock new paths that you can take full advantage of. But even if all that happens is that you learn from the experience, then asking these questions will have definitely been worth the while.

Taking Positive Action

So far up to this point, we have been mentally preparing ourselves for moments of adversity that we will inevitably experience. However, it is now time to step up and tackle this problem head-on.

Staying Focused and Mindful

When dealing with adversity it is important to stay present and mindful. When we are, this naturally helps improve our focus, which subsequently allows us to gain more clarity about the possible options going forward.

In addition, it is also important that we stay objective. Don’t cling emotionally to a specific outcome, otherwise, you may see clearly. Moreover, it’s also wise to stay self-aware of your thoughts and the feelings you bring into the situation. These thoughts and feelings can either help you or easily mislead. Being self-aware will ensure that you always stay in control of your mental and emotional faculties.

All this essentially comes down to your ability to focus on how things really are and not on how you imagined or hoped them to be. This distinction is important to help you more effectively deal with the circumstances at hand.

Break Things Down

Facing adversity and setbacks can become rather overwhelming very quickly. These can often be unexpected circumstances that suddenly knock us off balance. While off balance we are unable to see things clearly and therefore cannot take decisive action that helps us move forward.

In order to get yourself “on-balance” again, you must take charge. One way to do this is to turn adversity into a problem.

Turning adversity into a problem is helpful because when you are dealing with a problem, you are in the midst of handling something that comes with a solution. This immediately puts you in a very different frame-of-mind. You are no longer at the mercy of circumstance, and you are no longer tempted to play the victim card. Instead, you are in the driver's seat; empowered to solve this problem because you now see it in its proper perspective.

Given this, it’s time to get a little intimate with your problem by asking:

How could I break this down into a problem?

How could I present this problem in the form of a question?

What process must I follow in order to solve this problem?

What specifically do I control concerning this problem?

What part of this problem should I tackle first?

How will I tackle this part of the problem?

What’s the first action step I must take?

These questions lay the foundations of the actions you will take that will help solve this problem. In this way, you are able to begin building the momentum you need to move through this problem successfully.

Taking Immediate Action

Now that you are in a frame-of-mind for solving a problem, it’s time to take immediate action that will help move you forward.

Of course, there might still be a lot of uncertainty that might very well not have all the answers you need at this stage to help you solve this problem. At least, not yet. But all these things are of course irrelevant.

Solutions to don’t often come during times of contemplation; although that is certainly a part of the process. Breakthrough insights often come while taking proactive action toward solving the problem. This happens because while you take action you gain new experiences. With new experiences, you gather more information and more information leads to unique insights that you never had previously. And then, of course, these insights lead to unique perspectives that can help find the answers you are searching for.

Even if along the way you make a plethora of mistakes? That is perfectly acceptable. Mistakes and even failed attempts will help to learn from the experience. Moreover, every wrong attempt you make essentially improves your chances of success because you now have a better idea of what doesn’t work, and this, gives you a clearer understanding of what potentially might work in the future.

Finding Heroes and Mentors

If you’re still struggling and don’t seem to be making progress, then it can be helpful to find heroes or mentors. At times a little guidance is all you need to make a breakthrough.

Heroes are typically role models who you look up to. You don’t necessarily know these people. You rather admire them from a distance. Mentors, on the other hand, are people you know who have a vast assortment of knowledge and experience because they have been through the same kind of adversity you are currently encountering and struggling with. These people can guide you through the next steps of your journey.

Overcoming Adversity

Finally, it is also wise to future-proof yourself against potential setbacks that may arise. Adversities you are likely to face in the weeks, months and years to come.

You will of course never have all the answers and you won't always know what could be hiding just around the corner. However, this does not mean that you cannot prepare yourself in advance.

You could, for instance, use Murphy’s Law as a guide for what could potentially go wrong. At the very least Murphy’s Law will help you keep your expectations in check and your mind open to the possibility of threats along the horizon. Ask yourself:

What if this happens?

What if I make that mistake?

What if this particular person lets me down?

What if I don’t understand how to do this?

What if I get rejected?

What if I am unable to…?

What if? Then I will… If not, then I’ll just… And if that doesn’t work then I can… Alternatively, I could…

These questions will not provide you with all the answers. However, they will pose very interesting scenarios that will force you to think about the direction you are moving in carefully and more meticulously.

If at first, you don't succeed, try, try again. Don't let a first-time non-win stop further attempts. I know it's hard to shift gears without stalling but if at first, you don't succeed . . . This seemingly ancient adage was first recorded only in 1840 but has become so well known that it is often shortened.

'Tis a lesson you should heed–
Try, try again;
If at first, you don’t succeed,
Try, try again.
Then your courage should appear;
For if you will persevere,
You will conquer, never fear,
Try, try again.

Once or twice though you should fail,
If you would at last prevail,
Try, try again.
If we strive, 'tis no disgrace
Though we did not win the race–
What should you do in that case?
Try, try again.

If you find your task is hard.
Try, try again;
Time will bring you your reward,
Try, try again;
All that other folk can do,
Why with patience should not you?
Only keep this rule in view,
Try, try again.

No matter how many slip-ups you make or how slow your progress. You're still way ahead of everyone who isn't trying.

LOOK IN THE MIRROR. THAT IS YOUR DAILY COMPETITION

STRENGTH DOES'T COME FROM WHAT YOU CAN DO. IT COMES FROM OVERCOMING THE THINGS YOU ONCE THOUGHT YOU COULDN'T.

SUCCESS DOESN'T COME AND FIND YOU. YOU HAVE TO GO OUT AND GET IT.

I WILL FIGHT FOR IT. I WILL NOT GIVE UP. I WILL REACH MY GOAL AND ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WILL STOP ME.

YOU WITH ME?

TODAY Is MY tomorrow. It's up to ME to shape it, To TAKE CONTROL and seize EVERY opportunity. The POWER is in the choices I make EVERY day. I eat well, I live well I SHAPE ME!

The Half-Day Diet????

By now, we are all aware and know that lowering your calories and carbs to lose weight only works for a short time. And you almost always gain it all back and most times more. We all know this scenario and call it the yo-yo syndrome.

What we don't realize is the reason for this is that our bodies have a single-minded goal once we start eating “normally” again...
Our metabolisms desperately want to restore all the fat we lost in order to protect us from ever “starving” again in the future...

It’s just part of your biology.

Researchers actually call this protective over-reaction “Fat Super Accumulation.”

Some call it rebound-weight gain.

I've come to know it as “whiplash fat” because it snaps back onto the body so fast.

It also affects everyone who lowers their calories and carbs to lose weight. So if this has happened to you it’s not your fault.

Fortunately, folks using a new “part-time” diet trick are dropping pounds and inches quickly without any risk of Whiplash Fat.

Long story short, some are using a simple biological “hack” to quit their diets at noon every day.

This simple trick keeps calories and carbs up while fooling the body into melting body fat all day long.

The “Part-Time Diet” Breakthrough That Lets You Quit Your Diet At Noon Each Day…
So You Can Take The Rest Of The Day Off

We all love food. Most of us I'm sure, finish one meal and start thinking right away about the next.

So "Jack" stumbled on this strange diet trick and for him was a godsend…

He claims that because it’s something you can do no matter what kinds of foods you love while conquering hunger and never feeling deprived while reversing the crappy side effects that come with most diets.

Apparently he's figured why the incredible “part-time diet” trick allows you to eat whatever you want, completely without guilt, as soon as the clock strikes noon…WHILE you are still losing weight like you’re on a “full-time” diet…

And finally, the truth about what happens when you go to bed hungry if losing weight is the goal…

Because the best part is, all the “hard work” is finished by noon every day.

So in just half a day, you lose all the weight you can and should safely lose in a day, and you get to take the rest of the day off.

In truth, I don't know what to think of this. I'm kind of skeptical about it myself, but I thought I'd throw it out there and you can decide for. yourselves. I would like your feedback and thoughts.

Here's the link to the complete information.

A Guidline

This is about changing our mindset and habits, turning them into a lifelong lifestyle in becoming the healthiest you, you can be.

1. Don’t compare or obsess about other people’s results. However...

2. Encourage other people `who are trying to make a difference.

3. Set some goals. If you haven’t been eating well or are out of shape, start slowly. You don’t have to do everything at once. Unless...

4. Make a clean break and jump in at full throttle if that works better for you.

5. Don’t worry/stress about missing a workout, or not getting in your steps. You get to reboot whenever you want/need to.

6. Everyone cannot do 10,000 steps a day. Do what you can, and try to walk just a bit more than the day before until you are up to a daily 60-minute timeline.

7. Do at least some tracking. I find that tracking my daily habits keeps me motivated and on my chosen plan.

8. Slowly(?) Change your lifestyle to incorporate healthier habits.

9. Don’t obsess about what you cannot/shouldn’t eat. Find foods and recipes that you enjoy that are good for you and make THEM your routine instead. There are tons of wonderful food out there. It doesn’t have to be all carbs, salt, sugar and caffeine.

10. Make a plan. When will you do your workouts? Your walks? What is your backup plan if something comes up? (Just like you plan your grocery list for your meals)

11. Find an accountability buddy, here or elsewhere. I pretended that everyone was waiting for my check-in posts — and guess what? It turned out that some people were waiting for them!

12. Post an SOS if you need advice or encouragement.

13. Celebrate non-scale successes and share in and encourage other people’s successes. We’ll celebrate with you.

YOU'VE GOT THIS!
You can do this. Push until you can’t; rest until you can. Not a bad motto for making changes in your life.

TODAY Is MY tomorrow. It's up to ME to shape it, To TAKE CONTROL and seize EVERY opportunity. The POWER is in the choices I make EVERY day. I eat well, I live well I SHAPE ME!

Yes! It's like editing a movie. You have to realize that negative reel you're playing in your brain doesn't fit in with your vision of the finished movie. So, you have to slowly, carefully edit it out so the movie flows and fits together.

With positive self-talk, we develop the confidence in ourselves to move ahead, to talk positively and use that energy!

How many of us are aware that we talk to ourselves more than we realize or all the time? We all do. Our self-talk makes a huge difference for better or for worse. The question to ask ourselves is whether our inner voice is our friend or adversary.

All the self-help gurus tell us to (essentially) affirm our awesome every day. To, as Napoleon Hill puts it, prime our consciousness so much that we create “autosuggestions” of awesome.

For me, I believe self-talk is so important. I myself am really working on how I say things and what I say to myself. ie: I don't say "I worked out today....but didn't do...." I am trying to stop adding the negative to the sentence. I say, "I worked out today!!". I never say I was bad today, I say things like, I made a few higher-calorie choices. I don't start over, I just continue where I left off. I mean, we can never go back and change yesterday. What we can do is move forward and make better choices. Negative self-talk has been and will always be detrimental. We all have a very bad habit of putting ourselves down.

Most people aren’t even aware of the extent to which they accuse, blame, and deny themselves. Many people live with the “tyranny of the should’s.” They order themselves around and second-guess themselves after the fact. There are those individuals who believe that they must push and punish themselves to improve or achieve anything; otherwise, they’re afraid that they’ll end up as lumps on the couch. Never mind that they’re pushing and reproaching themselves into depression by creating greater unhappiness and dissatisfaction in their lives and those of their families.

The power of self-talk can swamp us with anxiety and rumination and overpower us with shame attacks and painful emotions. It can offer comfort and encouragement or make us feel anxious and inadequate. It can provide self-discipline and organization or make us feel overwhelmed and defeated. It can ruin our lives, job opportunities, and relationships, or it can be harnessed to raise our self-esteem, achieve our goals, and uplift our outlook and enjoyment of life.

Although we’ve grown accustomed to these inner voices, they can be changed. It first requires our becoming more aware of them and developing mindfulness over our self-talk. There are a number of steps to reform these voices that include gaining an understanding of their motives and standards and learning to modify and counteract them.

Until you’re acutely aware of your inner voices, you can’t change them. Write down your negative self-talk on a daily basis. Writing down your negative self-talk, including all the “should” and “shouldn’t’s,” will make them more conscious and provide you with choices.

When you catch yourself in negative self-talk stop and switch it for positive thinking. You should also spend time each day and throughout the day repeating positive self-talk.

Hmm interesting, very interesting...

Do we actually need to walk the 10,000 steps a day?

In general, walking is a good exercise because it puts our large muscle groups to work, and has a positive effect on most bodily systems, Stamatakis says.

But for the sake of efficiency — how much walking should one aim for? Public health experts have drilled into us the idea that we need 10,000 steps a day — or about five miles. But contrary to popular belief, this recommendation doesn’t come from science. Instead, it stems from a 1960s advertising campaign to promote a pedometer in Japan. Perhaps because it’s a round number and easy to remember, it stuck. Countries like the U.S. began to include it in broader public health recommendations. Today, it’s often a default step count to reach on walking apps on smartphones and fitness trackers.

Since the 1960s, researchers have studied the 10,000-steps-a day standard and have turned up mixed results. Although clocking 10,000 steps or more a day is certainly a healthy and worthwhile goal — it’s not a one-size-fits-all fitness recommendation.

“Several studies have consistently shown that significant health benefits accrue well below 10,000 steps per day,” Stamatakis says.

For instance, a recent Harvard study involving more than 16,000 older women found that those who got at least 4,400 steps a day greatly reduced their risk of dying prematurely when compared with less active women. The study also noted that the longevity benefits continued up to 7,500 steps but leveled off after that number. Put simply, 7,500 is also an ideal daily goal with comparable benefits to 10,000 steps.

Stamatakis notes that 7,500 steps also tend to be in line with common public health recommendations, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendation of 150 minutes of moderate physical activity a week for adults.

But picking up the pace might be a good idea. As with any exercise, the physical benefits one gains from walking depends on three things: duration, intensity and frequency. Put simply: walk often, walk fast and walk long. The goal is to walk fast enough to raise your heart rate — even if just for a short burst.

“Any pace is OK, but the faster the walking pace the better,” Stamatakis says. “It’s ideal for 3,000 to 3,500 [of those steps] to be completed at a brisk or fast pace.”

Even if this to be the case for my own benefits I still aim for the 10,000 steps a day, or better. For me, it helps keep me focused on my goals.

Wednesday: Well, John said he was fine yesterday. Didn’t get checked out. Upset about that but can’t force him.

Got the lawn mowed yesterday. Pleasant weather. We got rain last night – which we needed. North of us got bad storms. We fortunately didn’t.

Hope it’s a good Wednesday.

Julie: ON Monday John was driving down the highway and a 6-point buck jumped in front of him. NO place to go to avoid hitting him. Front end of his 2 mth. old car demolished. Frankly, he’s licky no injuries, or worse. Seems to be doing all right today.

Glad you’re getting the needed rain!

NOMORE: Yup . . . . up w/the birds here, too.

Definitely have always had the drive to be the last one standing!

Commitment is so important! You have to feel it to your very core. I am definitely hard-wired to never give up.

Perfectionism – that definitely makes commitment difficult. Whether it’s fear of the unknown, fear of failure – whatever it is – it saps energy from our commitment.

The beauty of it is that it all does come from within. We have it within ourselves, we just have to tap into it.

Achieving even the simplest of goals requires us to learn the meaning of commitment. Throughout our life, we are reminded of commitment, whether it’s related to personal or business goals, and we realize that without committing, we can’t achieve anything.

When you think about it, everything you ever achieved sprouted from a commitment you made; whether it’s your children, your degree, your job, or even your house. Learning how to commit is not simply about making commitments, however, it’s about keeping those commitments in the face of foreseen and unforeseen hurdles.

So, how to commit to something to achieve higher quality life?

Don’t Be Involved, Commit!

Doing things halfway is the mother of everything that can go wrong.

“The difference between ‘involvement’ and ‘commitment’ is like an eggs-and-ham breakfast: the chicken was ‘involved’ – the pig was ‘committed’.”

When you want to succeed, you invest yourself in it fully. Why? Because you can’t afford to only be involved; being involved means you’re not committed enough, and if you’re not committed enough, that thing you’ve been working on, won’t see the light of day. Don’t chicken out; lose your nerve.

You can’t work on several things at the same time and expect excellent results. Make sure you’re doing one thing, and you’re investing all you’ve got.

If You Won’t Learn How to Commit, Someone Else Will

There’s always someone out there who knows everything you know and they’re probably not alone.

So what are you going to do? Are you going to quit? Probably not, but why?

You’re wired to keep on fighting—every time you think you’ve reached rock bottom, you connect to an inner mechanism based on millions of years of evolution whose sole purpose is keeping us alive. It can be either by running and hiding so you’ll be able to fight another day or by making you fight tooth and nail to get what you need.

You probably heard about this fight-or-flight instinct. In fight-or-flight mode, your pupils dilate, your heart rate goes up, and blood pressure increases with the purpose of getting more oxygen into your brain and muscles. This response allows you to give much more in a competitive environment… but guess what? The same happens inside the other guy’s body. That’s why the one who’s more committed will be the last one standing.

Never Give Up, Never Give In
Quitting is also a lesson; a really expensive lesson, if you ask me. You pay for that lesson with the time you lost, the energies you invested, and a major blow to your ego. However, sometimes you find yourself with your back to the wall and you need to take drastic measures to save the day.

Sun Tzu, the ancient Chinese author of The Art of War called it “desperate ground”:

“Throw your soldiers into positions fro whence there is no escape, and they will prefer death to flight. If they will face death, there is nothing they may not achieve. Officers and men alike will put forth their uttermost strength.” — Sun Tzu

Do you know why people quit? There are 3 major reasons:

Perfectionism
Lack of faith
General inability to keep commitments due to a history of unsuccesses.

All three are bound to each other. The more you aren't successful, the less committed you become. If you’re less committed, you have less faith. If you don’t have faith in what you’re doing, every non-perfect condition can break your resolution. It’s that simple.

Fight perfectionism, fight lack of faith (whether in you or in others) and fight history to stop it from repeating itself.

Free Your Mind, and the Rest Will Follow

Once you’re committed to something, your mind becomes like a homing beacon. There are no more choices to be made, just pure focus on the target in front of you.

“The resolved mind hath no cares. “ — George Herbert

But what happens when you suddenly change your mind? What if the choice you’ve made is no longer as attractive as you previously imagined it would be?

You know of course what I’m talking about; that thought that you could’ve made a different choice, or as Neo said in the first Matrix “Why didn’t I take the blue pill?”
That’s why when you make a choice, weigh it heavily, commit, and never look back.

Commit to Something Bigger Than Yourself

If you have problems committing, it will be beneficial to commit in a group setting. The most likely way to overcome the fear of commitment is to commit to something bigger than just you, and in a group, you’ll be to draw upon others for both motivation and support.

“Individual commitment to a group effort—that is what makes teamwork, a company work, a society work, a civilization work. “ — Vince Lombardi

In a committed group, everyone works for the benefit of everyone involved with the same dedication and commitments.

Bottom Line
Commitment allows us to fulfill our most basic needs and achieve our most sought after dreams. It gives us purpose.

How many of us have been here or perhaps still are?

We always avoid looking at ourselves naked in the mirror after a shower… and always wear baggy t-shirts and big jeans to cover up the body we are so self-conscious or even so ashamed of.

Over the years and the past few years, in particular, we never even looked closely enough to see our skin stretching around our belly buttons, desperately trying to hold the fat in…
or the inflated chin that wraps around our necks, like a thick scarf in winter…

And we've always ignored the folds of loose flesh hanging from our arms or are to embarrassed to wear sleeveless blouses or t-shirts --because they sent ripples through the rest of our bodies when we moved.

Of course, we know we've gained a couple of pounds per year since High School…
I mean, haven’t we all? We just didn't realize how much it's added up.

You know how it is…

Back in our 20s we could just skip dessert and lose 7 lbs. in a week…

Now it feels hopeless against the nagging fat that keeps piling on to our bodies. And when we get to our thirties, it feels like we put on weight even faster!

And like me, I'll just bet you've tried about every fad; One size fits all program diets and trendy exercises there is…That’s because they’re based on the same old research and outdated assumptions. Slim-Fast, Atkins, Juicing, Keto, Weight Watchers, Dr. Furhman, Zumba, Kickboxing, Pilates…
Sure, we lose some weight…
But as soon as we stopped the intense hours of exercise and calorie counting, the weight just piled on again.

So, for the last few years, we just ignored the bulging belly, sagging arm fat and giant legs…

Not to mention the other parts of being overweight you don’t expect…

The intense food cravings that haunt you around the clock, feeling unenergized like you've been weighed down by a Mac truck, heavy tired eyes by lunchtime because you've spent the night tossing and turning and the constant brain fog that lingers throughout your entire day.

The aches and pains in your back, ankles and knees, as your bones scream out from years of being crushed from too much body weight.

And how many of us have been here before or perhaps still are?

We’ve all got a friend or friends who look amazing even with two-point-five kids, a full-time job, school events, sporting events, they attend a gym three times a week, the whole nine yards.

And we think to ourselves, if it’s possible for her, it’s possible for me...Right?
So, we throw ourselves into losing weight…we sign up for a gym membership, or buy exercise equipment for the home and work our butts off. We reduce our fat and carbs and count every calorie we put into our mouths.

And in the end, how many of us gave up the fight and simply buried it in the back of our minds because we feel hopeless? Because the second we take a day off, those pounds we lost start to creep back on again.
Because even though we lose a few pounds or even a substantial amount that’s when our weight-loss journey comes to a screeching halt. Even if we worked out more… and cut more calories… The scale just won't budge.

We're literally working out every single day for 2 hours…Jogging on treadmills, using the elliptical and lifting weights and NOTHING is working.

I felt like giving up.

But I couldn’t…

Not when "Sophie" -- in high school -- still looks so amazing.

And I’m so glad I didn’t stop searching...
Because even though we lose a few pounds or even a substantial amount all of a sudden we find our weight-loss journey eventually comes to a screeching halt. It doesn't matter what we try!

Well, ladies, I recently had a EUREKA moment, an epiphany if you like. With the help of Jade Tate, who opened my eyes to an entirely new revelation about what my body is now going through and has for some time via Post Menopause!

It's HORMONE related! Go figure! So I looked into his information and boy could I relate! So, I took the leap! I did the quiz to find out what my level was being Post Menopsal and having had a complete hysterectomy. Turns out I'm a level 6 and we put together a program specifically tailored to that! I've put in my first week and have already lost a total of 7 Inches of Visceral fat from my mid-section, abdomen and hips so far!!
Give him a listen!

Yes! In my younger days, I, too, thought my career was my purpose in life! But I have learned my purpose in life is much, much more than that. It all starts w/believing in ourselves, and letting that belief radiate outward.

if inspiration doesn’t come from within first, nothing out there will ever truly inspire us.

Remember that you, and you alone, have the power to do, be or create anything in your life that you desire – anything! Your power is unlimited. Your wildest dreams are attainable. There is magic in belief, promise in faith and delivery in action.

Life is all about going through upwards and downwards journey in order to pursue our dreams. Don’t let any kind of obstacles and failures push you against your success in life. Just keep moving forward with hope. Fight hard the battle of life. Together let's take the challenges with courage and determination.

Sometimes, somewhere in life, we fail and get hurt but there’s always someone behind us who would aspire us to outshine ourselves by making efforts and hard work. They are the reason why we stand up again and learn to fix our wounds. They are our inspiration in life, our strength to reach success and our motivator.

People who live in this world are just like a feather that moves in the direction of the wind. I am no exception to those people who used to ask me, “What is your main purpose of life”, but I used to get confused with career and purpose. I did not know there was a huge difference between the two.

The purpose of life gives a new taste in living and exploring new things. It gave me a new meaning to living life. I just needed something to associate with and to hold my life together and to make it a bit easier.

Let us not think that Inspiring through some things leads us towards achieving something.

Instead, let us think that it is a way of how we are serious to reach our goals in life. Let’s be inspired by people and things around us. And care about who truly love and support us.

There are a lot of things that can provide us with inspiration and help us to stay strong and provide guidance for a better life.

I hope you will find the strength and ability to restart with new power after reading this. Let's help each other reconnect each morning to the magnificence that we truly are.

Inspire yourself and others will be inspired.
Motivate yourself and others will be motivated.
Develop yourself and others will start to develop themselves...
Exude happiness and others will be happier in your presence...
Be an example first and then the world changes around you...

And then...

Definitely the cornerstone of success is the realization that you can't do it all, nobody can. We need each other and it's GOOD to surrender that idea that we can do all things on our own. Good reminder. Thanks.

The Secret of Surrender

Surrender should be seen as a great strength and comes when we let go of trying to attain the impossible.

MI am quite certain that most of us were raised and lived in a culture that emphasizes the ideals of independence and control. The general idea was that we are on our own and we don't need any help from anyone else, and if we are really successful it's because we are in complete control. However, true lasting success comes only with surrender, which is the opposite of control. In today's world, however, we cannot accomplish anything truly great on our own, without the aid of help or support, and the idea that we can is an illusion that causes most of us a great deal of frustration, anxiety and hardship. Surrender comes when we remove the blinders revealing that illusion and let go of trying to attain the impossible. Surrender can then be seen as a great strength rather than a weakness.

Even small moments of surrender are powerful indicators of how different our lives could be if we would only let go. We've all had the experience of expending huge amounts of effort and energy to reach a particular goals only to realize that we are unable to make it happen or see the complete fruition regardless of what we try. At the moment of letting go, realizing that we need to ask for help or simply release our agenda entirely, a profound feeling of relief may rush over us. This warm, open sensation is the essence of surrender, and if we didn't experience that feeling that we didn't really let go. But it is never too late to let go, even of things in the past that didn't work out the way we wanted them to, because surrender is always an option in every moment of our lives.

When we finally do surrender, our goals actually become possible, because the act of surrender is, in essence, asking for the help we need. This help may come in the form of other human beings or unseen helpers such as angels or inner guides. It may also come in the form of shifting circumstances, the small miracles that we call grace.

You may feel disheartened today. You could be feeling saddened that your expectations are not being met. One good way to overcome these feelings is to consciously release your expectations. Rather than trying to change everything at once and looking at the overall picture the best thing to do is make a list of prioritized changes and change the highest priority first. From there you take ONE DAY AT A TIME. Remember, each day is a new day without any mistakes in it. Simply focus on that. You might consider thinking about the type of people you want to spend time with as well and then work on integrating those qualities within yourself. If you also spend time treating yourself kindly and making yourself feel loved and cherished today, you will find that you are less concerned with the actions of others.

By releasing our expectations, we give ourselves room to grow in wonderful and surprising ways. If we instead learn to let go and focus more on making ourselves feel loved and fulfilled, our happiness will direct more positive energies. With a constant influx of beneficial energy, we are then able to grow and evolve far beyond what we would have envisioned. If you release your expectations and instead focus on fulfilling yourself from within today, you will be free to blossom and grow in the way they were intended.

Remember, there are stages and each stage takes a specific amount of time to reach its full potential.

Yes, I think it definitely has a power hold on too many. I admittedly do weigh daily (Drs. orders), but to me, it’s just a #. Period. The things you mentioned – how my clothes fit, my energy level, my sense of well being – those are my barometers. NO diet . . . healthy lifestyle change!

I've noticed a LOT of posts with ladies who are upset because the scale doesn't display the numbers they want even though they admit their clothes fit better and they feel more energetic. A while back I did Dr. Furhman's Fit For Life, mostly for health reasons. But your mindset is far more important. We all need to stop thinking of diet & weight loss. We need to be thinking of lifestyle change; getting ourselves to the healthiest you, you can be and to the best possible place we can be mentally and emotionally while straightening out our whack-a-doodle hormones. You work HARD to disassociate from the diet-think and the hold the scale has over your self-worth and self-confidence. It should be like you dump your toxic partner, and now you’re living your best life! So why would you want to go back? You know the scale doesn’t tell you anything about your health, happiness, or vitality. And sure, like any toxic ex, now that you’ve started to live your best life, it’s trying to win you back with a combination of promises and scare tactics. But you don’t have to listen. And frankly, this might be the biggest boss move you could make for your true Food Freedom… Scale numbers fluctuate far too often from so many different causes. Why put yourself through the yo-yo of emotions. Don't let it rule! Once you've taken your initial starting weight and recorded it just for record purposes you'd do well to block that number for good. Lock that scale up somewhere and throw away the key!

I’ll just let you sit with that for a minute.

Ah yes, the brain is a smart organism . . . it will fight change tooth and nail to preserve the status quo. Even if the status quo isn’t all that great, and definitely could be better w/change(s).

For sure, truth always comes to bite you in the butt @ some point, so no avoiding it! And the longer we put off that confrontation and pending change, the more challenging it becomes!

Here’s to changing endings!

Afraid of Facing The Truth

Most of us have had the experience of being in possession of a piece of truth about ourselves that we were afraid to acknowledge or have been unable to handle the truth confronting us. This might be a small truth, such as not wanting to go to the dentist or a larger truth, such as not fully accepting that the hardest battle you will ever fight is with who you are now and who you want to be. Usually, the truth is evident, and we can see it, but we choose to ignore it because it means change. So we turn a blind eye and come up with elaborate ways of hiding from it, no matter how apparent it is.

For the most part, we avoid the truth because change frightens us, or makes us angry, or makes us feel like we don't know how to implement it. We often create our lives based on a particular understanding and if that understanding turns out to be fully or even partially incorrect, we may feel that our whole sense of reality is being threatened. It takes a strong person to face the truth rather than running for cover instead. Nevertheless, we can only avoid the truth for so long before it begins to make itself known in pronounced forceful ways.

Ultimately, there is no way to avoid the truth, no matter how painful it is, so the sooner we let down our defences, the better. When we know the truth and accept that we may have to adjust our lives, we are in alignment with reality. Whatever your truth is, make a sincere effort not to shut your eyes to it, but instead to be grateful that you have access to it.

Definitely words of wisdom! Our bodies are wondrously made and each and every cell has a purpose. The body works together to balance things, and when we make changes the body has to re-order that balance! Definitely keep on doing the right things and your body will respond!

Today's encouragement I feel is really important:
So, you've been at this for a while, weeks, maybe even months and the scales just refuse to budge.
BUT, it's the invincible things that are changing those first weeks— our bodies are needing to find their balance. It will take time for our hormones to listen to the new input. Please don’t be disheartened if you don’t see dramatic weight loss right away. Honestly, we have put our bodies through so much constant stress for how many decades!! It takes intention and time to detoxify from the results of that stress. Don’t give up when you don’t see pounds melt away right away. Do the right thing for your body. Be consistent and committed to healing your whacked-out body.

If there's one thing every one of us should absolutely love and adore about ourselves is no matter how badly we've been treated, no matter how we're feeling, no matter what we've been going through, or are going through, we still have hearts of gold and endless love to give.
That's one thing no one can ever take away from us.

We talk to ourselves more than anybody else. So let's begin pay attention to the song that’s playing on repeat in your head.

I’m willing to bet that the negative garbage you say to yourself has been an anthem since your childhood: either you heard the adults in your life saying this garbage to each other or someone said it to you. You’ve repeated these words to yourself as if it were true for years. That’s why you believe it - they’ve become lyrics you can’t get out of your head.

You may be too young to remember cassette tapes but you could record a song on them and then record a new one right over it. Your brain works the same way with positive self-talk. Repeat positive words enough and you’ll start to believe it.

If you’re tired of listening to the negative tape playing in your head, it doesn’t have to be stuck on a loop. Record a new anthem for your life and listen to it on repeat

As we shift we begin to realize we are not the same persons we used to be.
The things we use to tolerate become intolerable.
Where we once remained quiet we now speak what is truth. We are raising our voices to be heard.
Where we once battled and argued with fools we are now choosing to remain silent.
We begin to understand the value of our voices and there are some situations that no longer deserve our time, energy or focus.

We are becoming so confident that we are becoming "invincible" within ourselves!
And IT'S ABOUT TIME!

This was someone else's experience but I had to share it with you.

Broken Pieces

I was at Costco yesterday and heard a loud crash and something shattering. Being nosy, I walked towards the sound and saw some people whispering and looking back to the end of the next aisle. When I walked down that aisle, I saw an older lady had hit a shelf and many things had fallen to the ground and broke.

She was kneeling on the floor embarrassed, frantically trying to clean up. I felt so bad for her, and everyone was just standing there staring at her. So I went and knelt beside her and told her not to worry and started helping her pick up the broken pieces.

After about a minute, the store manager came and knelt beside us and said, “Leave it, we will clean this up.” The lady, totally embarrassed said, “I need to pay for all this.” The manager smiled, helped her to her feet and said, “No ma’am, we have insurance for this, you do not have to pay anything!” If you have read this far, give me another minute.

Wherever you are, close your eyes, and imagine God doing the same for you! Imagine the broken pieces of your mistakes or the pieces of your broken heart from all the blows life have thrown at you all over the floor and you’re there trying to collect all of the pieces and fix them yourself.

Now imagine God comes and kneels right down beside you, smiles and says to you, “Leave it all there, We will clean this up for you.” He loves you that much and wants to put all of those pieces back together if you will let Him!

With Him, we have this insurance and it’s called GRACE! It’s free! All you have to do is ask

There are many benefits to quitting or limiting sugar such as: an increased immune system, weight reduction, more stable moods, less bad bacteria in our gut, improved sleep and so many more!

Dear Friends,

I want to talk to you today about sugar. I was neve4r really a sweets lover or lover of sugar but still realized that I was consuming too much; desserts mostly. Quitting sugar was one of the best health decisions I have made for myself. I noticed results immediately. Now that I'm many years into my sugar journey, I've come to a place where I can enjoy a piece of cake or a cookie and not have it send me into a spiral. At first, I really needed to stop sugar altogether, but now I can simply curb it and not be pulled back into its web.

It is important to limit sugar as much as possible for many reasons: Sugar depletes our immune system, and too much sugar will cause us to be acidic, which is very health-depleting. Sugar is also very inflammatory, causing widespread inflammation throughout our body (inflammation is connected to every chronic health issue we know). It is also highly addictive, causing us to crave more and more, which sets up a cycle that can be hard to stop. Digestion is affected in a negative way as sugar causes an imbalance of good and bad bacteria, which has many different symptoms: gas, bloating, irritable bowel syndrome-like symptoms. Lastly, sugar is very age-promoting due to the fact that it causes the glycosylation of proteins, which causes wrinkling and sagging of skin.

How do we avoid sugar as it seems to be in everything?!

By staying away from obvious sugary foods (candy, baked goods, most desserts, soda, junk food), highly refined and processed foods, and then by reading labels to identify added sugars in foods. This can be tricky because there are so many names for sugar. In lesson two we review all forms and names of hidden sugars so that you can be totally informed and more easily make the best choices.

Are there any natural healthy sweeteners we can use as a substitute, and how do you address this in the course?

Absolutely! There are plenty of natural healthy sweeteners that can be used to sweeten beverages, desserts, baked goods, and recipes where a little sweetness enhances the dish. My favourite is Truvia but there are others like raw and organic honey, organic applesauce, monk fruit, date sugar, and coconut sugar. Also, using fruit by itself is a great way to naturally sweeten a recipe.

What benefits do we receive by avoiding or limiting sugar in our diets?

There are so, so many, and they are life-changing, to say the least! You can expect to feel more energetic, see a reduction in weight, have better digestion, better sleep, and a stronger immune system. You will also see the benefit of having more steady, consistent energy throughout the day without those peaks and dips, and, of course, your cravings will go away too.

Most people I know get sugar cravings at some point during the day. Why does this happen to our body?

Besides having a diet that's heavy in sugar (eating sugar causes you to crave more sugar), several lifestyle and dietary factors can cause you to crave sugar. If your diet is too carb-heavy, you will crave sugar. Stress and hormone imbalances, nutritional deficiencies such as magnesium, zinc, and B-vitamins can also lead to cravings. If your diet is too salty, you may crave the opposite, which is sweet. Proper sleep and drinking plenty of water will also help curb sugar cravings as well. Finally, gut dysbiosis, which is an imbalance of good and bad gut bacteria, can cause cravings because sugar is food for bad bacteria!

Does avoiding sugar mean cutting out natural sugars in fruit, veggies, and dairy products?

Definitely not! Foods with naturally occurring sugars, like fruits, some veggies, and dairy products are nutrient-dense because they also contain many health-promoting nutrients and break down to sugar at a slower rate. Foods that contain natural sugars when eaten in balance with other healthy foods are always health-promoting. Get your sweet fix with these guys.

Ultralow-glycemic fruits like berries (strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries) are low in sugar and high in antioxidants and fibre, making them the best choice in the fruit category, and organic, unsweetened kefir, a fermented dairy product, is low in sugar, high in protein and good fats, and rich in health-promoting probiotics. Combine the two, and you have a great way to start your day!
