When winter comes (we are in the mountains, so it's close - we've had snow and frost already) I start sprouting. It took a while to get the gist of it, but now I put about $6 worth -8+ oz - of beautiful sprouts in the remaining broth from cooking chicken recently, and by adding a bit of this and that will have a lovely chicken veggie soup that will last for 2-3 servings for about a dime's worth of seeds.

Winter produce isn't as fresh as it might be, and my cupboards are good habitat. All I have to do is remember to rinse the seeds a couple times a day.

I have several kinds of seeds - mung bean, peas, sunflower, radish... and a few more. :)

I had a restless night. Not done much today except take my great grandson to a library book sale. I don't need books or movies but always find some. I found some interesting Guidepost books & a cookbook called Crazy Plates. I have it but not sure if my sister does. It is written by 2 sisters from Canada. It was bag day & I still had room in my bag. Three dollars for a reusable bag. If I bring it to the next sale I can fill it up for a dollar.

Oh yeah, litro.... sorry, I meant liter. We spell it differently over here ha ha

Went into town for the market today. Coconuts are about 70 cents each (35 pesos). The green ones are good for splitting open for coconut water, and using a spoon to scoop out the soft meat, for desserts. The brown ones, they use a big electric reamer to grind out the harder meat. We use it to make coconut milk (I never knew where coconut meat came from before). Coconut milk is amazing in curries, but at 500 calories a cup... we do not use it often ha ha

We use the local markets for fruits & veggies. About half the price of grocery stores, and way better quality. Not a whole lot is local, it either comes from up in the mountains or from China. Sometimes we can buy directly from the farms down the road. Only a couple times a year though, but it sure is nice. After they sell the pretty crops to the market vendors we can buy the ugly stuff super cheap! We get tomatoes for 20 cents a pound, and bell peppers for free. As much of both as we want. (market prices are crazy high for both).
~Edit~ Tomato & bell pepper are both usually about $2 a pound at the market, the grocery store would be almost $4 a pound.

Today was Farmer's/Flea Market day. I got green peppers 4/$1. Cut them up & freeze for sausage sandwiches. & a couple Halloween wind spinners hangers. I like spinners. At SS got chicken noodle soup 3/$1, Tropicana drink 3/$1, 2 packs of prego 60 oz? For 4.99, Cadbury almond bars 4/$1, some sharp cheese slices $2.29 let, bottles of Heinz ketchup 1.49. Sells for over $2 other places, can't remember size. They had really large mums for 3.99. Like 20-24 inches across.

Hi, every one! I've been really busy keeping myself walking every day. I'm tired of carrying extra weight around. So I haven't been on the computer as much.

Tukarama, it is interesting to read about your different ways of measuring foods, like gantang and litros. If your wife eats rice at each meal I can understand how 8 lb. goes quickly. Rice is supposed to be very good for the digestive system. Pork is a good source of one of the 3 essential fatty acids. I like pork loin, chops, liverwurst.

I will try making my own mixed veggies like you have described. I usually buy both canned and fresh mushrooms, and green peas are a favorite with me.

The weather often keeps me from leaving my hilltop so I shop once or twice a month for essentials. Then if I can get out weekly I buy foods and soaps that are at a good price. Shopping for clothes is a rarity; I've worn the same outfits for many, many years... cotton, twill.

I'm making chili...later 'gaters.

@HELPFULSPIRIT1 "I bought a 20 lb. bag of rice at the grocery mart which will last my family 5 months."

I rarely eat rice, so my wife buys it one gantang at a time (about 8 lbs, it is a unit of volume not weight - 2.4 litros). It last her 3 weeks ha ha... she eats a lot of rice. I think it is a Filipino thing... She eats too much rice, I eat too much pork.

Today was my pork shopping day. I but about $30 worth of pork loin, butterfly cuts, for the month. I weigh out 100 gr pieces and bag & freeze them. About 5 kilos a month. That sounds like a lot.

I also bought my veggies for freezing. I make my own mixed veggies. Fresh green beans and carrots, plus canned mushrooms and peas. I dice the carrots, slice the beans and blanch them. Mix with peas & mushrooms, and freeze the mix. I measure out one cup for each serving. I make the gallon sized ziploc bag, 1 bags a month (not stuffed full). Much cheaper than the mixed veggies here is WAY better/fresher. I do not use fresh mushrooms or fresh peas because they are not available.

Once a month I buy the veggies & pork. After it is all measured and frozen I am done for the month. I generally eat 1 cup of veggies, and 100 gr of pork for lunch and again for dinner. If we go to the city, I do eat lunch out. I have been eating the same meal for over 3 years and not sick of it yet ha ha

Sister Jill & i went to some community garage sales on Thursday. I got a new lawn chair for $5.00 & a nice floor lamp for $7. We then went to a GW store. I got two tops & found a book on President Reagon Alzheimer's. It had been several weeks since we went bargain shopping. FUN.

At thrift store. I got my grandson a heavy fleece plaid color bathrobe for .50. It was marked $5. Was blue ticket day so clothes are .50 and other items are half off. I don't know why he wanted one. He ran around in his underwear all summer. & we have a wood stove so house is usually too warm during Winter. (He'll be 15 in December.)

I bought a 20 lb. bag of rice at the grocery mart which will last my family 5 months. I have a 5 gallon square jar with a heavy lid that I can store most of it in. The rest I put into smaller jars and put onto a top kitchen shelf. Also, I bought a 5 lb. bag of dry beans to use in chili an similar recipes. I have another 5 gallon jar, a twin of the rice jar, that I keep the beans in. emoticon

Wednesday is Thrift Shop and Farmers/Flea Market day for me. They had just built a new much larger building for our TS that opened last week. Was really looking forward to the opening. Parking lot was so full, no carts. They had a fabulous first week. But I was disappointed. It felt more Boutiquey with tables with plates set out like ready for a meal. And clothes were all together not separated like in old store.
Well we thought after first week it would get more back to normal. Well, they still were pretty busy yet yesterday. They are beside a Sharp Shopper grocery store on main street now. Not tucked away on a side street. Great for sales for mission, but not the same atmosphere as before. I
I got 3 gourds at F/FM, and an office chair for on my Pavilion for bird watching. Was $35 very good condition. Not exactly like I wanted but has foam cushioning. And it was more than half off of a new price one. I was wanted a leather type with adjustable back and maybe go a couple inches higher. Will keep looking

I brought home some fresh plums, tomatoes and a cucumber from the Greenhouse volunteering gig. The weather was great, and I planted some fall blooming crocus in one of the beds. In a year or two we'll be able to harvest saffron :) That stuff is EXPENSIVE! But growing our own (and ideally having the bulbs divide as bulbs do) will be great. Our area is actually similar in climate to the parts of Spain and the middle east where the stuff grows naturally. :)

Yes! When I was in the E.R today, they had me put on a gown and socks with no-slip stuff on them. When I finally signed myself out AMA, I took the socks with me as they said they just throw them out. I figure I can use the socks here in our house this Fall and Winter!

@FLASUN Yes, I shop ebay! I was going to ask you your seller name, will have to write it down.
Great job on your finds! My Thrift Shop built a new building opening Sept 2. They are having 50 per off at old shop this week but nothing worth while. We are hoping they have taken all the goodies to new Larger building for Grand Opening!! When we took donations to new building yesterday you can see that the showroom is Full!! They have been moving things for several weeks now.
Farmers/Flea Market had limited people set up. Hot & calling for rain. Sylvia got some fresh fruit & we left & it did start raining. Not heavy.

Yesterday went to Farmers/Flea Market and got 3 cantaloupes (little ripe) for $1. At Sharp Shopper got 5 lb bag of frozen whole green beans for $4. It says on bag that a serving is 38 whole green beans!!! Wow!
