Paisley, I want to encourage you to hang in there. I had the exact same thing happen. I started exercising and eating right near the end of May. For the first 2 or 3 weeks, I was losing almost no pounds and was getting very frustrated. But I read in someone's blog that if you go from no exercise to a lot of exercise, your body takes a little time to adjust and hoards the weight for a few weeks. So I stuck with it and I'm on day 36 now, and lo and behold, the weight is coming of much faster now. Just stick with it, you're doing the right thing and it will show soon!!

Paisley, I was a Classic Coca-Cola addict. I was starting with a Coke for breakfast. I even kept an open can of coke in the frig so when I got up at night, I could go take a swig. Not good for health, weight, the teeth, etc.
Anyhow, I set one of the "other goals" to just cut out Coke for 1 meal or 1x a day. I figured I could give up Coke 1x a day. It was hard at first but after seeing "my Streak" days add up, it got easier. Now, I'm only having Coke once in a while. It tastes really sweet now. For someone that used to be excited to see a Coca-Cola Classic truck, I'm glad I'm doing so well with it now.

Thanks for the encouragement! I have been drinking diet pop. I am trying to stick to one a day, I need the caffeine! So its one of the things that I am trying to quit but in the past if I try dieting and exercising and quit drinking pop all at the same time I never stick to it so I am trying to implement the dieting and exercising and then once I get a routine then I will attempt the quitting caffeine!

I know this is said all the time paisley, but just a reminder that you are building muscles, especially in legs and torso running, and muscle does weigh more than fat. Don't get discouraged. The scales can be so fickle sometimes but keep it up and you will see progress.

paisley, first good job on the running and better food choices. But, you said quit drinking regular pop. I don't know if you are drinking the diet or caffine free but I read thats actually worse. I have also read it takes 3-4 weeks to see any kind of difference sometimes longer. I would just give it some more time. I'm sorry emoticon

Okay, I feel like I am not progressing at all!
I have been running for 2 weeks now and quit drinking regular pop and making better food choices and I haven't lost a pound! I think I just need to give it more time! Frustrating! That sounds really whinny! emoticon

I'm no expert but if your able to do the 2 miles, I say, go for it. There is no way I could run 2 miles. That is why I went with the couch 5K training. If I could have run 2 miles I wouldn't have bothered with the training.

I am signing up to run my first 5K in October 2010, I have started by running 2 miles 3x a week, with intentions to run a little more when I am able running the 2 miles is tolerable, when I am done I am exhausted! Would it be best to continue with the 2 miles 3x a week, and move up to longer distance as I progress? Or would it be best to start the couch to 5K plan from the beginning? If anyone has any suggestions that would be great!

Hey Jackie - you can do lots of things....

If you want more cardio, add in bike riding or swimming. They're pretty easy on the joints, but still give you a solid workout.

You can add in strength training - that's always good for you. Helps build your muscles and is good for your overall health!

I strength train specfic areas of my body 4 days a week (arms, chest and shoulders, legs, and back) - pretty hard too. I also run 5 days a week...so I really only have a day off, but I like it that way. That day off is usually still spent outside, but most of the time on the beach soaking up the sun!

I hope this helps you!

Hey Joules - I think I would have to agree with Jackie, sounds like when you are doing your walking intervals you probably slowing down to less than you normally walk when you do your ostrich walk...I got a chuckle out of that also!

Hey, Joules. I just thought of something. When I am running up an incline I toe run. That seems to help me alot. I'm not after the speed that toe runners are looking for, it just seems to be less pressure on the calves and ankles.

Joules-I think that is it. It looks like you are walking more than you are running. That would bring your average way down. Maybe you should try another street. Do you have a track near by?

to SRACHAVEZ - I'm glad I gave you a chuckle! Try not to get discouraged, after all, you could've been sitting at home on the couch, but instead you got out there and gave it your best! That's all anyone can ask of themselves. Just keep listening to your body, and it will tell you how much to challenge yourself and when to ease up.

I have learned that it's important to stay hydrated the day before you exercise, the day you exercise, and even the day after you exercise. In other words, stay hydrated every day! emoticon I find plain water boring, so I like to drink sugar-free pink lemonade, but I dilute it at least twice as much as the package calls for.

In the 1990's, I did a lot of race-walking, a.k.a. speed-walking, a.k.a. wogging. I got a book from the library on the benefits of race-walking, and how to have the proper form: elbows pumping, hips swivelling, footsteps placed like you're walking on a balance beam, etc. It really does burn a lot more calories than regular walking, and it's lower-impact than running. It was very trendy at the time, so it was not so unusual to see other folks walking along with an ostrich gait. www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpPiCpvnEII Anyway, I don't really care what strangers think of me, so I still do it. emoticon

Thanx for the encouraging words. I sure needed them. I ran from week 4 yesterday just to keep it going. I'll probably do something from week 5 tomorrow.

HokieJen: I think I will sign up for the July 3 race. I don't want to wait too long to try again.

Jackie: Good for you for going on. I'm proud of you.

Joules: I had to chuckle at the ostrich comment. I did my 1st 5K at 43 minutes. I do not run at a fast pace yet. My 1mile was 13 minutes. I think I take shorter steps when I am running than when I walk at a fast pace. I am working on that. But, slowly. That may be your issue also.

I was trying to do: run 3 min/walk 1 min, repeat. In reality, I was running for 1 or 2 minutes, then walking. But the streets are not completely flat, and I can't run at all on an incline yet, so some of my walk intervals are 2-3 minutes until I reach a downhill stretch.

When you are trying to recover from during your walk interval from the jog interval it might be you're going to slow or you are walking to long. How long are your intervals.

I'm in week 3 of my own modified 12-week C25k program.

I have a question: If I can walk 5K in 45 minutes, why does it take me 18-20 minutes to run/walk one mile? I know my jogging speed is barely above a shuffle, but is is possible that I walk faster than I run? When I walk the whole 5K, I speed-walk. I look like a chubby ostrich, but I don't care. But when I'm doing intervals, maybe I am slowing down too much during the walk portions. Any thoughts?

Snrachavez!!! I am so sorry to hear your race didn't go as you planned! I think that we all have those racse and end up learning a lot from them! I'm glad to hear you were able to run at least most of the way - and able to get that ankle wrap off!!!! Hopefully you'll be better prepared for your race on the 3rd (you should do it!)!!!

Either way, be proud of yourself for sticking with it and finishing the race! I'm proud of you for being a trooper!

OMG. My 5K this past Friday was a disaster. I was disappointed at first, but now have decided it is just a runner's war story and I have learned some valuable lessons.

While, I was drinking water, I was not hydrated enough. I started the race off thirsty. It was 96 degrees and over 100 heat index. This overexurtion triggered my asthma and I did not have my inhaler with me because the running had not been causing me any problems. (OK so that's 2 lessons learned). Then I used and ankle wrap (some ankle swelling but no pain) that I had not worn to run in before and it cut the circulation off in my leg. I also started out a bit faster than my normal stride. I probably should have saved the faster pace for my push in. But I had positioned my self more to the front of the pack this time and it just seemed natural to go faster. I also did not do my stretches as long as I usually do. But these all together and I was only able to run about 2 of the 3.1 miles. I did have someone help me get the wrap off at the halfway mark and was able to run part of the way back.

Jackie: I did the program in the 9 weeks. Everytime there was a big jump in time I was afraid I could not do it. But, I did. And despite the above catrastrophy I ran my 5K on week 9 day 3. I also see people taking it slower. Repeating weeks. I would at least try to move up. If you can't do it, repeat the previous week. But, don't let your fear of the time keep you back. You won't know til you try. Good luck.

For me, I'm going to keep running. I think I will just keep repeating weeks 4 through 9 for my practice runs. I haven't picked my next run although there is one coming up on the 3rd of July that looks inviting.

Just slow down a little bit and try that first. Often we start out at a faster pace and many of us have realized that if we slow down a little it makes all the difference in the world. Speed will come later. Don't worry about it now.

Lorinda77 that's great!! The thing with this program is to take it, make it your own, and progress as you are able whether that's starting out a little less than what the program does or repeating weeks or whatever. It's a tool but like many other tools there are different ways to use them. I can think of a lot of different ways to use a screwdriver than just to screw a screw in LOL!

Just keep on working at it and you'll be surprised at your progress.

Debbie I know what you mean. I was glad no one saw me. Of course, if I'd been seriously hurt I would have wished for someone but since I wasn't I didn't have to be embarassed LOL!
I've been seriously thinking about geocaching and have read a lot about it. Sounds like fun.

A couple of months ago, when I walked a half marathon with just a little bit of running as I was just starting, one of my toenails got bruised and turned black and is just now starting to fade. That's another one of those runner's trademarks I've read about.

Brini: No problem. I google EVERTHING. What did we ever do before google?

I went running this morning had had the thing happen that most likely happens to all runners at one time or another. I tripped and fell. Skinned up my elbows and one knee and thigh some but got up and got back to running. Nothing too serious. But now I've had my first official running "trip" LOL!

I just registered for my second run. I had to make sure I had someone to take care of Ashlee while I ran. WooHoo.

Brin: Breathing should be done by pushing the stomache out. I googled it and came up with several different times for breaths. I do well with breath in for 2-3 steps and breath out for 2-3 steps.

Tonight I will be doing W1D1 for the second time (I am doubling the program). I have already completed the first week and decided that I need more time before I head to week 2. Any breathing tips would be excellent!

Debbie - Don't over do it at the barbecue! In regards to the generator, my wife has informed everyone that we will own a generator soon!!!

I did W5D1 today and it was wonderful!

I had not run since Saturday. Swam for hours on Saturday, and storms with lightning prevented myrun yesterday. And, this morning I felt myself slipping into that "I'll do it tomorrow" mode. So I forced myself to go run. I just did W4D1 to get me moving. There is another 5K this friday evening that I am considering. Fairly level roads would let me get a better time. Although, so will everyone else, so it may not move me up the list much. But, there is BBQ afterwards. YumYum. I think I need to do this one.

Yes, hydration is important. I actually started the day before. I knew it would be hot here, too. And, yes. Let me know. I'm going to do a bit of research to see what others say.

Thanks! I am glad I finished - it was ridiculously humid at 8:30 in the morning so it was already a hard run. One of the unfortunate things about living in the south sometimes!

I didn't exactly follow the plan to start off with. I actually just started off with a plan to run 30 minutes. So I started at 1 minute of straight running, with 1 minute walking and alternated up to 30 minutes. Then I went to 2 min, 3 min and so on with still just 1 minute of walking in between. So, now, it's really just trying to push myself in my mile times. Work on getting them lower. Once I formulate a solid plan, I'll let ya know! But, first, I need to be sure I hydrate!!!

Lshawnelson: That is horrible. We got hit by a tornado the middle of May and I understand how hard it is when your home is not in order. Luckily for us we have a generator that at least allows us to have half of the house functioning with air. (my husband would argue the luck part. he says it's because he is prepared). But, just the distruction outside made it difficult for me to continue. I'm not sure I could have with no air. You have to be able to cool off and relax between runs. At least I do. I hope you are up and running soon.

HokieJen: CONGRATULATIONS. I knew you would do well. And, what a great time. I'm going to start working on my time, but my goals are not as great as yours. I think if I could do a 30 minute 5K that would be good enough for me. I postponed my run this morning due to lightning with the storms that are here, but tomorrow I'll hit the trail again. What are you going to do to help your time? Are you starting the program again? Starting in the middle? I'm a bit undecided. But, if I don't set a plan I will not do well.

Shawn! That stinks! I've been in that situation with no AC when it's miserably hot! Hopefully you all slept well last night and you're back to operating with power! Shesh! Rough night!

I ran my 5K Saturday. It was ok. I cramped up only 8 minutes into it - I didn't get enough water Friday. But, at least I know that now so when I run another one (maybe July 4th) I can make sure I hydrate enough the night before. I finished with a time of 33:58, so I've got an 'official' time and can now work with that to get down to a goal time of 24 minutes.

Hi all! First of all, Congratulations Debbie!

It's been a couple days since I posted, but it's been a rough 36 hours! It started off good yesterday morning with my W4D3 run, yes I finished Week 4! Then we had a neighborhood yard sale. By the time we finished around 1, we were hot and exhausted. It was well over 90 degrees and very humid. Then, it came a storm. We really only had one strong gust of wind, but it blew over several trees in the neighborhood and one happened to fall and hit a power pole and take out a transformer...so, the power has been out from 1pm yesterday to 9pm tonight...it has been hot, humid, and no A/C has been horrible...we didn't sleep at all last night, so I think we're going to bed now...probably won't get up and run tomorrow since we are so tired and will have to bathe our daughter tomorrow morning since there is still no hot water tonight, guess it will be another Tues/Thurs/Sat week....anyway, talk to you soon!

I scaled way back on my running the last two weeks, my calf was really tight and not letting up so took it easy. Took the opportunity to introduce myself to Spin. Woo.

Plan to get back on a running schedule this week, really want to get at least three 3 mile days in. Gonna hit the trail later today when it cools down a little but it's still gonna be HOT and humid. At least the trail is shaded.

Thanx everybody. I could not have done it without the encouragement of my Sparkbuddies.

Lindakay: Don't feel too bad. You can't do it if you are not feeling well. This time of year there are a lot of runs. The one for you is waiting.

KCJoy: Good luck. I had been running by time and not distance. So my run was a real push. Especially with the hill factor. My normal route has some terrain changes, but no nearly what I encountered on my 5K. I had calculated that my mile time was 13 minutes (it actuallly was 12, my daughter reminded me) so I figured about 39 minutes to do a 5k. My week 9 consisted of day 1 at 30 minutes. Day 2 at 35 minutes. Which I figured was close enough to 5K to be able to do the run for my day 3. And, it was. Barely. One thing I know for sure; if I can do it, everyone here can do it. Keep going.

Hi everyone! I'm new to this thread, but just thought I'd share how inspiring I think everyone here is! I am on my last week of C25K and I run in my first 5K next Saturday. I know that I will be able to finish it running the whole time, and that is the only thing I care about. It's good to hear about everyone's success stories with this program. It has truly changed my life for the better! Take care all and keep up the fantastic work!

Debbie that is awesome!!! You did great! I wimped out on my race today because I woke up with my stomach feeling really queasy and feeling tired. I hadn't pre-registered for this smaller local even because I just found out about it about 2 weeks ago. I could have pushed myself but didn't. Then I found out from another spark friend that did go that only a total of 9 people showed up. I felt really bad that I wimped out when I heard that. The poor organizer spent more on getting set up for it than the event made. It was for a puppy rescue ranch and the local spay/neuter program.

Thanks everybody. Temps in the mid 80's with the heat index at 90. So it was hot. The terrain was a bit more than I was expecting. There was about 7 blocks up hill on the way back towards the end of the race. I was sure I was going to give up several times, but I just kept trying to get to the next stop light (it was in the down town area), and the next .....I did it. 43 minutes. 6th out of 8 in my division and 174 over all. I think there was a little over 200 entered. But, none of that matters to me. I just wanted to complete the race at a run. And, that I did. With asthma, arthitis, hip replacement and all. WOO Hoo

Lindakay: Heat is an issue for me, also. I usually run at 5:30 in the morning and the 5K tomorrow is at 8. Those couple of hours can really affect the tempuratures. I am going to drink plenty of water today and in the morning to get good and hydrated.

I'm still working on week 9 because one the temps spiked a couple of weeks ago it affected my endurance. Building it back up though and temps are supposed to drop back down into the mid to upper 80's for a few days instead of 102. Have a small local 5k tomorrow that I'm looking forward to, although I still can't run the whole thing and will have some walking intervals in there, especially because of the hills on this course. Looking forward to it anyway to challenge myself.
Have a gread day everyone!

Thanks everyone! I like the cause to a few years ago I did the 3day walk and I wanted to do something along the same lines so I am glad I found one in my area!

I am not worried about my time right now I am more going towards being able to do it at all. I am doing around 20 to 25 min miles which to some might sound horrible but if I go any faster I forget to breathe lol

That was my problem all the other times I tried it, I was going for speed and how short it should take me rather than getting to the goal itself. I would forget to breath my sides would hurt so bad so I gave up. So now I figure I can work on my speed later.

Thanx, everyone. I pushed for 35 minutes this morning. I think I can now get in a few more minutes to complete the 5K. I went ahead and ordered a 'graduate' t shirt. emoticon

All of my kids are going to go cheer me on. But, for tonight and tomorrow I'm going to relax. I think the pool sounds like a good place for me to be.

Just completed an outdoor 5K run this morn and did it nonstop in 43 minutes. Very pleased with myself but curious as to what peoples expectation of running is? I have gotten into the mindset of just being able to complete it non stop and not worry about my time. But am sure it will change? Cheers

You all are so encouraging! I know 11 minute miles are great! I'm just a little crazy and push too hard sometimes. (Read: A little bit of a Type A person.)

Yay for registering for a fabulous 5K Momo.

Yay for starting C25K again, Last! That's fabulous!

And, yay to you Snrachavez for taking the chance to get one 5K under your belt and begin your speed work!

Well, this is it. My final exam. I will do W9D2 tomorrow and try to push to 35 minutes. I ran a 13 minute mile a few weeks ago so I think it will take me 39 minutes to complete the 5K this Saturday. But, if I can run the whole thing I will consider myself a winner.

Momo: I will be running the Susan G Komen in Tulsa this year also. I signed up for the fun run last year with my daughter (she has disabilities) and had planned on walking it. I ended up in the hospital (asthma) and did not get to do it. I still raised money so that's OK, but this year I will be running it.

HokieJen: I would be proud of the 33 minutes. As you saw, I am expecting about 39 minutes. But, that's OK. After I finish this race I am going to start over and work on speed. This is our game and we can make our own rules. (giggle) Good luck this Sat. I will be sending good thoughts your way.

I just signed up for a 5k in Sept. I am doing the Susan G. Komen in Cincy. I figure by Sept I should be complete with the C25k and be able to start working on my time a little bit. I can't wait! emoticon

And, it's not that I'm not proud...I just have this mindset (which can be a hassle sometimes) where I always push myself too hard too fast. So, ya know, I expect me to run a 27 minue 5K right out the gate....even though realistically I know it takes some time to get there. Silly me!

HokieJen I think 33 minutes is a great time for those of us that haven't been doing this a long time. Be proud of it!

I'm not sure....I've had these shoes for a while and this is the first time they've bothered me in this particular spot. I'm inclined to believe it might be the socks. So, I'll go back to my adidas socks for a while and see how that feels....and, I might hit the running store this weekend just to have them take a look at my shoes and see if I need a new pair already.....

HokieJen,
Sorry to hear you have that blister thing on both feet now, but at least you found a temporary solution, maybe it will help heal those blisters. Do you think there is something in you sneaker?
That is so awesome, best of luck on your run this Sat. I think 33 mins. is a great first! You are well on your way. emoticon emoticon
No running for me today, tomorrow is my W3D2, resting up, think it's going to be warmer which will make those hills more of a challenge.

Enjoy your runs!

Man! I can't go 3 days without reading this thread...I get so behind!

The blister thing is still there, but now I have one on each foot. So, I just put some knee size bandaids over them when I run and it seems to prevent whatever is rubbing and aggravating my skin from doing it.

Shawn - great work on the belt hole - isn't that exciting? I know I was pretty happy when I realized I had to do the same thing! Congrats, congrats, congrats! And, just keep at it with the hills. When I feel like I'm ready to slow down or give up, I just keep telling myself 'I can't expect change unless I get out of my comfort zone.' And, clearly hills are out of your comfort zone so just push a little harder there. I bet you'll see in just a few weeks you'll be getting up those hills in no time and they'll seem like nthign to ya!

I signed up for a 5K this Saturday. I did my own 5K yesterday to just see the time - 33 minutes. I'm not terribly happy with it, but I'll take it...for now. It probably didn't help that my legs were ultra tired from running 2 days in a row. I'm taking today as a rest day and will get a lift in and then tomorrow I'll get on more run in before the race. I'm pretty pumped!

Karen - Congratulations on starting Week 3!

Outdoormomma - Thanks for the tips on hill running.

I started Week 4 today! emoticon

Given the 5 minute runs, we can no longer walk up the hills and only run down, so today we were running up hills for the first time (every time we tried before we decided it was a bad idea!). It wasn't as bad as I had built it up to be in my head.

Thanks for all of your support!

Shawn

Outdoormomma, thanks for the tip about toe heel, I'mgoing to try that Thursday. Also when running up I tend to put my heel down, maybe I'm over stretching my heel and that's why I'm getting some pain. Thanks! I too think it's wonderful you have your kids running w/ you. Enjoy every momeny!

I did my W3D1 today and I really surprised myself. I actually did a few more intervals. The weather is just gorgeous out there. Don't know how long it will last. They're predicting hot and humid by the end of the week, so days 2 and 3 may not be as easy as today.

Enjoy your runs,all!

I've noticed that sometimes it is easier to run up small hills or inclines but haven't really incorporated it into my training yet although I definitely need to!

OUTDOORMOMMA that is so great about you doing it with the kids! It's such a great way to also encourage them in healthy habits as well as the other reasons you mentioned. I may have to get my grandchildren involved in this with me.

Hills ~ I've always found it easier to run up a hill than walk up a hill ... I tried to figure it out one time and I think it has to do with momentum making it easier but to be honest I'm still not sure about the why behind it!
When running down a hill I generally run toe-to-heel versus the normal heel-to-toe running - it's always been easier on my knees (I have an old gymnastics knee injury that gives me problems sometimes).
And now thinking about it, I think I do the same thing running up a hill as well (steeper inclines like what I had to run in Quantico, not the gentler slopes) ... well, solely on my toes never putting my heel down - but like I said, on the steeper hills.

We start week 2 tomorrow morning. I have to say I'm enjoying doing this with the kids more than I thought I would. I'm doing it with the kids for two main reasons ... 1) they need to work on endurance and it's good exercise 2) for me! I was always needing to do something for a child or whatnot that kept me inside before when I'd start the program - so if they are doing it with me then no need to stay behind for someone and they keep me accountable ... can't cheat when you have 5 sets of eyes on you!
I don't think I can actually verbally express how good I feel with them running with me ... it's akin to being like a giddy teenager!

I'm doing week three. So yesterday I ran 4 minutes without stopping. I know the time is for only 3, but I was wondering if I could make 4. I'm so proud of myself. When I began I could barely make a minute, wow three weeks down and i'm actually starting to enjoy running again.
