Hi, I'm Carolyn and I know this will be my year as well. I also know that last year was a total wash, I won't look back and I'm starting with baby steps again. I knew I was part of this team, but never participated. I'm ready!!!

I've joined a 15 minute a day work out challenge (Baltimore site) and it's helping me to keep some focus. Knowing that I will be checking in is a big motivator for me. On the other hand, I'm wanting to do some type of buddy system and not write so much on the message board.

I realize that is what my journey is missing ... I no longer think I can do it myself. Nothing wrong with being accountable. Everyone of the success stories mentions a support team as a major component.

So here I am ready to give and receive support...

Congrats to all, there's power in numbers!
blessings,
Carolyn

Hi all! My name is Keri and since joining Spark in February '07 I've managed to lose about 63 lbs. I hope to lose another 27 to meet my final goal before 2008 ends!

Hello all,

I am new here and happy to be here. I never thought I would see the day when I count calories. But I have lost at least 10 lbs so far and intend to lose 25 - 30 more lbs.

Hi everyone~

Glad to see everyone is motivated. I just read an
article that said if you want to lose weight, you
need to get 60 - 90 minutes of exercise a day. I'm
assuming that is above & beyond your normal day.
I got myself a pedometer and it is quite a
challenge to try to get in 10,000 steps a day.
But, when I do, I know I've put in a good day.
Good Luck everyone. Check back in so we can see
how everyone is doing. Kristi

Hi Everyone!
My official start date is actually February 3rd, but couldn't find that sp class week so I figure this is close enough. How is everyone doing almost a year later!

Hi All...

I found SP in January of 2007, but actually started my eating program on February 14, 2007. I never knew about this team, but found it today and decided to join.
I was very motivated in the beginning. I lost 30 lbs. in 3 months. Unfortunately, I've been in a rut since then, gaining and losing the same 5 lbs. over and over. I haven't been able to get back on track or re-motivate. Perhaps joining this team will help...

Hi all. I joined on Feb 6th but have never posted anything. I met my target weight on May 26th 1 day before my target date and a trip to Florida. The good news is after a week at a conference with lots of food and drinking, I arrived home and did not gain a pound. I have set a new target but am very happy with where I'm at.

Goals
5/1/07 180 Met Apr 10
5/27/07 170 lb Met May 26
2/28/08 165 lb met Jan 15/08

Now at 175, need to get back at it!

Hi All -- I started Feb 4, but just found this team today. I started with high expectations -- to lose 20 pounds by my birthday, but that date has come and gone, and I have lost 4 pounds. So last week I revised my goals and SparkPage and came up with more realistic goals. I know I need to try harder at sticking to the nutrition and exercise program, but I also realized that I am missing out on giving and getting encouragement by not participating in the SparkTeams. So, I'm starting again with renewed committment -- and looking forward to participating on your team!

Hi.

First of all great job on losing the weight you already have.

Now, take a deep breath and relax. Take another deep breath and relax some more. Now, go put on some great music to listen to or, if your tv is there, put something on to watch. Use the treadmill, and when you get off acknowledge to yourself what you have accomplished today.

Hope this helps. I do the same thing but use an exercise bike. Works wonders mentally when you acknowledge you did another thing positive for yourself.

Have a good evening.

Hello all! This is the first time I've sent a post to our class of Feb, so hello! I'm having a weak moment and really want to eat, but I'm already close to my limit. I've already burned 400 calories today and I'm considering jumping on the treadmill to burn even more calories since I'm bound to go over. Help, someone save me!

Hi!

Wow, I just found out today teams like this exist!

I first logged in here in January, but really didn't get started until Feb 9, when I totally switched over from my other tracking program.

I was doing pretty well for a while - lost 4.5 lbs pretty quick there, but now I'm back up (and then some) because of my chronic pain.

I have good & bad days with it, but after going through some bad WEEKS, my weight got out of control. I'm doing better now, getting my eating back on track, and hope to do at least a tiny smidge of activity again, maybe even today!

Hi guys,
My name is Elaine and I joined spark people in February (thanks to my daughter) and I think it is really great and will help me with this seemingly perpetual problem. I have almost 100 pounds to loose and am determined to succeed before I have major health issues. My biggest problem is being too busy with nursing, gardening and operating my own bed and breakfast (with my husband) to get enough of the right kind of exercise to get the weight off. But I have determined that this time I am going to take the time for me and really do this for me. I look forward to hearing from you all and getting your ideas and comments. Remember...We can do this emoticon

Hello.

I am new and looking for motivation. I am trying to lose weight before I get pregnant. I don't want to be one of those people you see get removed by a crane from their house. Weekends are hard and my husband in not trying to lose weight so he eats he will. Hopefully I am strong enough for the two of us to win the healthy eating contest and we both can lose some weight!!

Hey LaRaine!!! Fellow person from Kansas!!!!

emoticon I joined on Feb 10th, and just now introducing myself. I've been floating around the Sparks site, but have now settled down to do some "Serious" weight losing. My mind is set. I have a plan on a work-out, and a diet plan to follow. I started it yesterday. I certainly hope this works this time!

Joined a while ago, but I'm finally introducing myself.

My story is simple; woke up one morning and realised that I was sick and tired of not being able to do the things I did in my 20's. That was November, and since then, I've lost 40+ pounds and 4 sizes. I'm still working like mad to lose the 70+, but for the first time in a very long time, I feel that goal is within my reach.

So glad to meet all of you!

Oh, another team I thought I'd introduced myself on. I'm here to get healthy, lose weight and to give and get support along the way. I have an ear problem that keeps me from going all out but am still doing ok.

Talk to you all later.

The Phoenix is the symbol of hope and rebirth. Often alluded to as the Bird of Paradise, this mythical bird was the only one of it's kind. And because of this, the gods vowed that as long as The Phoenix lives, there is hope for mankind.

Hi! I'm Melissa, 28 yrs old, and trying to get healthy again. I used to be very healthy and active in college and have found that the stress of being in the financial industry has made me fat! I'm trying to get active again-- I joined the Virtual 5-K team and am doing yoga. Nice to meet everyone!

You always won't notice a change right away. Your body has to get used to the changes you made. Try to measure, that seems to be a little more accurate in telling you how much you have lost or gained emoticon

Hi! I'm Claire from TX. I think this is a great site with lots of great information and inspiring people. I want to get more involved and make some good weight-loss cyber-buddies. My goal is to lose at least 100#. When I break it down into 10% increments it doesn't seem so overwhelming. I've been walking consistently since Dec. and am now using the food tracker and exercise tracker to see how I'm doing. It's also been something of an eye-opening experience for me and has made me much more aware of waht I put in my mouth. In spite of all that, though, my scale at home has not BUDGED! I know (in my head) that the scale is the least reliable judge of how I'm doing but it is a tangible one. I am not in danger of getting totally frustrated and giving up....this is just where I am today. It's hard to work at something that seems to take soooooo long -- esp in our instant gratification society! I've rambled enough.... Enjoy your day!

I owned a brown spotted dalmatian before. Very sweet. I do miss him. Had him for 15 years before he just gave out. Then inherited my daughter's beagle when she went into the AF. Then inherited my friend's husband's Lab when he moved in with her. Labs have a very friendly, sweet disposition. Mine was not very social when I first got her, wouldn't even come to me at first. But now she thinks everyone on the walk trail is supposed to acknowledge her. I am so proud of that!!!!.

OH! Poor babies! Both at the same time too... that can't be easy!

My b/f and I want to get a dog, however until we move into a house - not fair in an apt. I love lab!! Friends of mine have 2 labs and I just adore them. The first one they got, I drove cross country with her on my lap when she was about 2months old. She was so tiny! She still thinks she's a lap dog.

Both had teeth cleaned. Dexter (beagle and 10 yrs old) had 3 fatty tumors removed. Marta (lab)had was spayed...at 5 1/2 years old. I just got her 2 yrs ago. Should have done it when I figured out she hadn't been done. She's mooed at me all morning. I gave them both their pain pills and they are sleepy now. Poor babies. My kids are grown and out now, so these are my babies.

I'm in total agreement. I had to smile at your earlier note about taking one of your dogs out with you. I also have 2 dogs. Dexter is a beagle, he likes to sleep in. And Marta a blacklab. Marta loves it when I run, Dex just ain't so sure about it. LOL He'd rather putz along and smell the smells. Both just had surgery yesterday, so I'm out my exercise buddies for about 10 days.

I have 2 dogs, 3 cats, 2 fish, 1 gecko - mini zoo! Wiegh-ins I know now are good & bad 1 to keep you on track & the other depressing if you go up but were "good". What if the darn thing broke? No two scales wiegh the same. I'm going to work at not being obsessed with wiegh-ins. Will need all the luck in the world for that one! I do like the one a day check. LOL

A daily weigh in does keep me accountable for sure...my only issue is with the slight variations in water retention etc. I find if I"ve been doing well, and I'm up even 0.5 I get upset and start to get discouraged.

Sad I know... so just imagine now that I weigh myself pretty much twice daily... it's pointless really.

I like the once daily weigh in. If I don't weigh daily it's easy to deny I might have gone off track. Daily keeps me honest. I just don't like when I weigh more than once daily....you know...just to see if it just MIGHT go down a little. Yeah, right. LOL.

OOH! I love dogs! Are those the only two you have?

I found that as soon as I let go of that "Back in my day" mentality, I was setting myself up for success. Otherwise, it becomes a crutch and I dont' want to be one of those people who lives in the past.

Just think, if you were there once, you have a goal to help you get active again. That's how I look at it.

I think a 3 weigh in week should do for me too... keeps me accountable and not falling off the rails too much!

That's it! "Back in the Day" I used to exercise horses, jog, work in the fields . . . Good point I should just let that go and work on what is here and now! Start date for walking - 03Mar07 @ 6:00 a.m. I'll take the Lab because I know the Jack Russell won't get out of bed that early! LOL
I think I have broken away from the twice a day weigh-in but did sneak one in last night! I was thinking a weigh-in on Mon., Wed. & Fri. a.m.

I hear you Sciauger... I am on the scale at least once a day but most days it's 2.

I weigh in the morning and then at night before bed. I can normally determine how my day went, and what the morning weigh will bring by my night weigh in. How obsessive is that? Honestly!

I'm trying to get it to 3 times a week. That will be a huge challenge.

I started my running again and I must say I'm loving it. I've decided to let go of the "Back in my day I could run..." I'm not there but I will get back there.

Until then, small steps!

Thank you Shortoak & Laraine, little by little I guess. I'm one of those wacked people that needs to weigh everyday, however I'm now learning to not get all worked up about the little ups and just keep focused on the downs. Still deciding on an exercise. Really not my thing but have to commit! emoticon

Okay, I'm in. First time on e-mailing. Started SP sort of 01Feb07 at 216 but have been working hard at it 04Feb07 until now. Seem to have lost momentum. Wanted to meet 10% goal of 194 by 01Mar07 and doesn't look like I'm going to make it. Have a weigh-in of 198 on 26Feb07. Any ideas?

Caroline,

Sometimes it is not all about winning the prize and it feels AMAZING to just be in the race ... I walked a 10K through the wine orchards of Northern Michigan, it was the first time I had EVER done anything like that ... it was a few years ago now ... and it felt totally amazing ... there were a lot of runners too and people there from Running magaizines and stuff ... I actually was one of the first in for my age group and got this little medallion ... but for me it really was about just being in the race and doing it ...

Sherree thanks for your cheering support. And Caroline, you keep that goal in mind. Actually, it's been 3 years since I did the triathlon..and the swimming is my weakest point. I'm not strong at it, I just kept telling myself to just keep moving until that part was done. I was sidelined by ear surgeries two years in a row, then a foot surgery. I wouldn't mind getting back to it. I only compete against myself. I was just proud to be doing it because I was 45 when I did the first one.

My shift went well..yes, I am a nurse. I had a migraine that kept getting worse, but I am training a student and she did most of the work, and the women I work with are very supportive. When I said I really didn't want to have to leave part way through the shift, they made me lay down for about a half hour after my lunch break...and actually, that helped tremendously. It's good to have great coworkers.

I can do this!!

Vickie,

Welcome to the group and Spark people ... you should get your sisters and friends to join Spark people too, then you could make a team and have a friendly competition and you have built in forms to keep track of everything and now you can even share your food and exercise logs if you like ... cool hey ...

Hey Barb,

Hope your 12 hr shift is going alright... a nurse?

I have to say that triathalon sounds pretty exhausting! Good for you for doing it! The swim part is what would kill me. I'm not a strong swimmer so I tend to flail around and exhaust myself ... still in the shallow end emoticon

I'm pretty excited about my 5K. I keep looking at my 10K picture for motivation and I want to fit into those pants again! Two goals wrapped into one! The pants I don't think will come with the 5K but i'll be on my way!

Hope your foot is alright...

Shortoak,
Good for you on starting a running program. Having a goal, like the 5k is a good thing. I lost several pounds by getting ready for a sprint distance triathlon. It was a 450meter swim, 12mile bike, 4 mile run. No, I wasn't really fast, but I was in much better shape and thinner than when I started the program. It just gives you a good reason to be out there running. I've just started jogging (1min, 4 min walk) since having foot surgery in Sept. Decided time to quit babying the foot and get moving again. Anyway. Welcome to the site and good luck on your running. I'm fairly new here too.
Well, gotta get ready for my 12 hour shift. Yay.

Evening everyone...

Great job on the weight loss! It's amazing when you look at combined what a group of people lose in a week... just amazing!

I haven't been on for a while but reading through I found alot of new people and thought I'd blend back in :)

I've started a running program for myself - aiming to run again as I mentioned. My new goal is an early morning 5K run on my birthday. A great way to start my new year. I have about 2 months for that so I hope that I do well and it puts me on my way to a 10K in the fall.

I lived in an apartment on Schlangenbader Strasse for a while ... a tiny efficiency apartment ... with a bed that folded out of the schrunk in the living room and a card table in the kitchen ... LOL ... that was certainly a different time ... I was a tour guide for groups into East Berlin ... that was a lot of fun ... I learned a lot ... my friend had family that had lived in East Germany before the war and the wall ... what an effect on the lives of all of the people involved ... those who left and those who stayed ... there were still people risking their lives to get to the other side of the wall when I lived there ... it truly gave me an appreciation of what freedom meant and that there was a price tag attached ... I was your age when I lived in Berlin ... gosh how my perspective has changed now that I have grandchildren ... LOL ... it was a wonderful time though ... such a difference from the small town I grew up in in America and live now ... LOL ... I suppose we don't outgrow our roots do we? I really enjoyed my travels, but I love my home too ... I would love to come back to visit sometime ... and yes, with my daughter ... but since she has 4 children, ages 10 months to 7, I think that will probably not be anytime soon...

Thanks for the warm welcome! Berlin has indead changed a lot. It's a wonderful city to explore. You should come back some time and check it out, maybe go on a trip with your daughter. I grew up in Zehlendorf, in the American sector of the city. Where were you at?

Hi Lina,

Welcome to Spark people and the team ... what a coincidence ... my daughter was born in Berlin in 1981 ... August 17th ... I lived in Berlin for almost 4 years ... from the end of 78 until the end of 82 ... so I must have been there when you were born ... my daughter is 25 ... I have often wondered what it would be like to visit Berlin again ... so much has changed there in your lifetime ... the biggest being the wall coming down ... well, I suppose that was only the beginning ... I am sure it is a different world now that when I was there ... but there are people there I would love to see ... my daughter's God mother for one ... we lost touch ... her name was Birgitte Eagleson ... but perhaps she has married again and changed her last name ... she would be in her70's now ... or perhaps early 80's ... my goodness, I guess I am getting old too ... LOL

Any way ... welcome ... to a Berliner ...

Sherree

I joined SparkPeople about two weeks ago and it's been the best motivator I can think of. Mostly the fitness tracker keeps me going as I treat my scheduled fitness as a must make appointment.
Hope you are all enjoying it as much as I am!

Hopeful me,

I am so glad that you had a chance to share your work with your dietician ... we are all different ... perhaps you are one of those folks that starts off slow and picks up speed ...others start off quickly and then get discouraged when the weight loss slows down to the 1 to 2 pounds per week which is average, even when you are working hard ... it could be the water thing for you ... sometimes if you are not used to drinking water you have been running around dehydrated... and your body says AHA!!! water ... don't get this too often, better hold unto it ... LOL ... so you get extra water weight gain until your body figures out you are going to drink it all the time and then you start getting rid of the excess, rather than holding unto it ... I am happy for you ... keep us posted how you are doing...there is a group of ladies here that are pushing to break that 200 barrier ... you should post there when you do ... and do the weekly weigh in... it helps to map your progress and share your victories ... both large and small ...
