Way to go June. It is good to know for yourself that slip ups don't mean back to old habits for good. This is a lifestyle change,, not a diet. Everyday brings new challenges, just need to learn new skills to deal with them.

I did so well before Christmas. We left the day after to visit my Dad, and I went a little crazy. (Partly due to an emotional upset - an issue with one of my kids). When will I learn that eating does not solve anything! But, I'm back on track as of Jan 1 and tracking my nutrition and exercise, posting, and following the SP plan. It feels good to be back on track!

Garint,
Well, things sometimes just work out, don't they? I'm sorry you have to work instead of being with your extended family. I hope you have your own family to celebrate Christmas with! My mother-in-law, sister-in-law, and brother-in-law are coming to visit the five of us, so the house will be full. I enjoy having Christmas here. My kids are grown or nearly grown, so it is hard to coordinate our schedules to go down to see the grandparents. Hope you have a happy one!

So does everyone have a plan in place for over the holidays? Myself, I hope I go easy on the treats my sister will have out. Her dinners are always later than she plans, and we all fill up on the snacks and deserts that are out before dinner is ready. When dinner does come, we are full, but we can't disappoint her by not eating her dinner, lol. Maybe I should eat lunch before I go to her house for dinner?

Garint,
Keep in mind that one meal will not sabatoge your new lifestyle! Portion control might be enough to get you through, and then get back on track. If your family members know that you're trying to eat right and get healthy, surely they will support your efforts.

Oh no Garint, if you don't eat as your Grandmother expects, she will think you don't like her cooking or worst yet seriously ill. Oh, what a dilemma! I feel for you, I really do. Options, double up on exercise, or seriously consider smaller portions of everything, and no seconds (if it can be helped, lol). Drink lots of water so you can feel full too, maybe that will help?

I agree. I never tell people that I'm on a diet - just that there are some things that I choose not to eat. I do "cheat" with small portions of high-sugar, high-fat foods occasionally. I think this helps me "stay the course." I feel like I can live this way!

Yes, I really do believe this is the best way. As you get use to smaller portions and making better food choices, you don't feel so deprived. This is a healthier lifestyle change not a diet.

JuneBugg, good to hear from you. I think doing 1/2 - 1 lb a week is the best way to do it. I feel it makes it more of a lifestyle, versus a quick pill of hours of exercise, no food for a month, loose weight, and not learned anything. You are doing great. Way to go! WOOHOO!

Hello.
I haven't posted here in a long time - I thought we had disbanded! I checked several times, and there were no recent posts, so...I've joined some other teams. But I got a notice on my spark page from Girlinmotion, so I'm happy to come back and see how everyone has progressed. GirlInMotion - you've done wonderfully! I'm plugging away. I had a very slow October, but I'm getting back to my 1/2 - 1 lb/week, so I need to get more committed to the plan! Thanks for the encouragement!

It'll come. You've done really well so far. I found that my weight went in bursts. I'd lose a chunk, then would remain stationary for a few weeks and then start losing again. I think it is a mechanism your body uses to adapt to the lower weight.

Well I weighed myself yesterday and I was 290 so I'm close to getting into the 80's. After my workout today (only 47 minutes of cardio)we'll see if I can finally hit the milestone of getting out of the 90's.

I too am over 50 and am experiencing some hip discomfort. I don't know if it is from my dancing, walking or strength training. My thought is whatever got it to hurt will eventually heal it. I just hope that it isn't arthritis. If it is, the good news is we must keep on moving or we will stop altogether. Keep up your exercising and walking. It will pay off with better health and a more actice lifestyle.

I agree that walking really helps drop the weight. I was up to 45 min a day (after starting out with 20 min in March) but hit a glitch with a sore hip. I'm over 50, so I learned the hard way how important stretching is. I've had to back off to 30 min at a slower pace until my hip gets better (gradually it is). My weight loss slowed with the shorter walks. I'm looking forward to working back up to 45 again! Good luck to all, and be sure to warm up beforehand!

You are so right. I felt the same way about walking...lesson learned fast. Now I am doing great. Hiking really surprised me too. I thought I was doing enough incline and intensity at the gym to warrant a good hike. However, it kicked my butt. I don't think anything replaces hiking in nature. Now I try to go once a week.

It is surprising how much different walking is than we think. When I first started I thought I could easily get a long brisk walk in. I was wrong, it took me a few weeks before I could walk briskly for a whole 30 minutes - but now at least my general walking is faster and I can go further too.

I didn't get WATP but I did buy myself a good pedometer at Wal-Mart in the pharmacy area. I really like it as it also does aerobic walking. I didn't realize I was so out of shape walking wise. I thought I did a lot because of work. I add an additional mile walk around the track now at a track.

Okay, so I didn't wake up early, but as soon as I got home from work I did the whole 3 mile workout and i feel great! I like that it was easy enough for me to be able to do it the whole 50 minutes, but not so easy that I was bored and didn't feel anything. I will surely try my hardest to keep it up! Thanks!

I bought walk away the pounds today. Plus, my husband has to go to work an hour early so I am waking up with him and doing it when he leaves.

Yvonne: I try to get him to do stuff with me but he won't. He is 6'1" and might weight 140, so he definitely doesn't have motivation to do stuff!

I started by setting myself a goal of walking at lunchtime. I don't have very long so I did 30 minutes for three days of the week. Pretty soon that increased to every day of the week. Over time I began to incorporate other forms of exercise. Start small and work you way up and you are more likely to keep at it long term. Also, see if your husband will join you - go for a walk, cycle ride or run together - or find a dance class you can go to together.

I made a new goal for myself. I will try to wake up at 6am (I wake up around 6:50 now) to exercise for at least 20 minutes and eat breakfast. I'm going check out WalMart tonight to see if they have WATP.

I've heard a lot of good things about walk away the pounds. Can I get that at WalMart? I used to do Tae bo and I heard that WATP was a lower intensity, but I guess since i haven't done it in while, my fitness level is probably lower.

I am with you Taren. I am having a really rough time right now as well. I do Walk Away the Pounds. The good thing about that is for a small investment you can choose your walk time. Start off with the 15 minutes. Squeeze it in before work and maybe 15 after. One way to incorporate it slowly. Once you get going you look forward to it and your energy level will soar. Just remember, baby steps. You'll get there.

I'm having a real hard time with this. No matter what I do I can't eat less or better and I haven't lifted a finger for exerise. By mid-day I'm motivated to get home and exercise but once I get home, all I want to do is sit on the couch next to my husband. I just don't know what to do to make myself work out and watch what i eat. I think I've gained about 2 pounds since joining this site! I have absolutely no one IRL to do this with...my husband and friends are all skinny. I want to join a gym, but it is about 20 minutes away and I really odn't have the money anyway. I know I CAN do it, I just can't figure out how to make myself do it!

Way to Go Tina,

There are many rewards for adopting a healthy lifestyle - but it's nice when we see the numbers on the scale go down too.

thanks for the wise words Yvonne.
I finally saw my first loss at the end of last week, 2lbs...yaaay, at last!
I'm still motivated, and decided to move onto Stage 2.
How's everyone else doing?

It's been about three to four weeks since you all started. You should be starting to see some results by now - if not on the scale then in your level of fitness or your energy levels or how well you are feeling. The first flush of enthusiasm may be waning now - so now is the time to look at your progress and check your goals are still realistic - and make changes where they are not. Remember this is not a race so pace yourselves so that you know you can sustain things.
