Thanks, Submom!
My husband and I recently made the decision to move. We're looking at homes and of course, we've got to get ours ready to sell. SO this clutter-free thing is getting more urgent!
I hope you're have a good year and continuing to make the impressive progress you made!

Great job, Submom!!
I wasn't very active in this challenge - early on I told myself I will not get back on here until I cleared off my desk. It was meant to motivate me and I had visions of reporting back in and saying I finally cleared off my desk! Well, my lazy self is very stubborn and did not like ultimatums so I am still with a messy desk. And I missed this group. I learned a lesson there.
Sorry I wasn't around much. I hope everyone has a wonderful 2015!

We had Thanksgiving at our house, and my "challenge" table looked beautiful.

While I didn't eliminate ALL of the paper clutter entirely, I did get rid of a lot. I also set up a better system to keep the paper clutter from building so quickly.

While the war on clutter is ongoing, it gives me hope to know I can win a battle here and there if I just keep trying.

Ugh! I forgot to drop off my bag at Goodwill! And the bag I put out on the porch for the Boy Scouts' food drive didn't get picked up, either, and I had it out there in time. Oh well, lots of food drives going on, so I can still give to those. And I WILL get to Goodwill on Monday!!

Good for you, Betmawal, for identifying those time-sinks. Easier said than done, for me, at least.

Today I forgot to put out a bag for a charitable organization that was doing curbside pick up in our neighborhood. Good news is, there's a Goodwill store about 5 minutes from here, and I will go there Saturday to make a drop-off.

My big challenge is at work, I finally identified "time sinks" in my day. My job is more than full time but I only get 3 days per week. So here goes:

Look at my email 3 or 4X/day ONLY!!!

Delete 3 emails for every 1 that I get. Can ignore about half of them usually.

Different process for uploading MARCs (those of you in the library/publishing industry will know this term).

Handle paperwork as little as possible. Recycle, shred when no longer needed. I'm amazed there aren't small rodent nests on my desk. Get rid of it!

Make the briefest records possible.

Stay on top of computer and OPAC glitches. Oh, boy, these can make for a very bad day!!!

Plan my work day and set up my desk for the next day, so, I can hit the ground running.

Sadly, my least favourite, curb the chit-chat. So painful, I like my co-workers very much! We don't overdo it to begin with, but I have to cut back even more.

Take mini-breaks between each tasks, just a couple of minutes each -- this is amazing, I do get more done!

Tidy up between tasks.

Go for a walk at lunch.

Use my Outlook account to set up tasks, etc. This has good organization tools, use them!

My goal is to have conquered / managed my piles by the end of November and to have my new habits in place by the middle of December.

WOOHOO!
Are you ready for this?
I have recycled 169 magazines this week. Yes I said one hundred and sixty nine!

I work in a library and made the mistake of REPEATEDLY bringing them home for craft projects that never got done! (The magazines were withdrawn from our library collection....). I finally decided I was never going to do the project and BOY DOES IT FEEL GOOD TO HAVE THEM GONE!

I almost gave myself a hernia dragging the barrel to the curb!

Blessed are the flexible, for they shall not be bent out of shape.

Today I made a lot of progress with the paper clutter. I tried to touch each thing only once -- either file it now or shred it now -- in order to avoid creating a new pile! I'm seeing some empty spots on my table and that's exciting!

2. go through the boxes and boxes and baskets and files of paperwork I have managed to collect one box, basket, file at a time until it is under control.

#1 project - desk - get all those papers put away/filed/tossed.
#2 files - sort through and pull out the old statements/receipts/etc and dispose of properly
#3 other papers - go through and sort/file/recycle (hopefully doing this most of all) then try and keep it from getting out of hand again
#4 finish sorting through closets and donating unwanted items

In October, I cleaned, organized, and labeled our medicine cabinet, and cleaned and organized our junk drawer and junk cabinet, which now contain zero junk! I've also cleaned out our bathroom drawers and cabinets.

I need to organize some paperwork, including our investments and wine club. I did buy markers so I can write on the wine bottles how long to hold them, and what foods to pair with them. That will help a lot.

My YDS is moving out this week as soon as he gets home from the east coast (visiting his girlfriend). DD ships out for the Navy on December 10. Once they are gone, I am turning one room into my craft room and another into a second guest room.

The local thrift store will be getting a lot of stuff this year!

I know it is the first of November, but I want to start organizing my desk area so I can get my Christmas Cards out, addressed and with a short letter, I plan on doing it early every year, but it has not happened yet. so that is my plan, I start tomorrow, today, it was Halloween deco to the garage.
If I could ever get my desk clear, it would help so much on the stress I know this, but ----

Welcome, Forestpal and Cookie. Cookie, I am sorry about your Mom.

Some clutter is easy to toss once we get around to it, but other things can have strong emotions attached, and it makes the work even harder. Pace yourself.

I've been working on decluttering, but right now I'm not seeing much progress. Maintenance, I guess.

Hang in there!

My new goal is to box up misc stuff I'd been procrastinating organizing, into boxes & labeling to be organized later. Just want to get it out of frustrating & depressing sight. Later plan is to go thru one box at a time. I've already disposed of items to toss & give away.

Hi DJones - emoticon

Sticki - I agree with you about stress or anxiety being a major distraction. Glad you found a meditation app that you like. I should try meditation.

I've read the Willpower Instinct. It's a great book! Getting it on CD and listening to it while you're working is a fantastic idea!

I got my first round of decluttering done this morning, but I know I have so much more to do. One day at a time, I guess!

Welcome DJones3423, I'm glad you joined in!

This morning I tried something new. I downloaded an app that was for meditation and it was actually more a relaxation/hypnosis/meditation thing but I listened to it, almost falling asleep. Afterwards I took a little nap (I was tired) and then I got up and was able to totally take care of the huge pile of clean clothes I had waiting to be folded or hung and distributed and put away.

I felt so calm and I kept resetting my 10 minute timer because usually that's all I can do if that but this time I felt like I could go on for an hour and almost did.

Feeling the calm today made me realize I must have some anxiety or stress typically that I'm not aware of and that's making it distracting and hard for me to stay focused or have willpower when it comes to doing a task I don't like.

Oh, I also checked out a set of CDs from the library called The Willpower Instinct. The book was recommended in an article I read. I listened to that while doing the clothes and it made the time go lots faster as well as it being very educational.

I'm going to try this again tomorrow and see if it works again.

I hope everyone is doing well - GO TEAM!

I'm new to this team, so I just wanted to say hello. We're hoping to put our house up for sale either in 2015 or 2016, but we have to remodel most of it first, so I have a lot of decluttering and organizing to do. The hard part is finding time to do it when I have a full-time job (although I do work from home most of the time), three kids in sports, a demanding hubby, a dog, three cats, and a flock of chickens, ducks, and turkeys. I've never been very decluttered or very organized, so it's hard to make old habits die.

Wives, submit to your own husband as is fitting in the Lord. -- Colossians 3:18

Sorry about the computer issues, Sticki. Not to add to your list, but is there anything vital on there? Photos, taxes? Make sure you have a backup (like an external hard drive) before it dies for good. I lost a bunch of photos that way. :(

As for the other stuff...I understand. I don't think you're doing anything "wrong", it's just one of those days organizationally, I think.

It's good to not get distracted by wandering around the house. Believe me, I know! I have those oddball items on my table, too. I think sometimes we just have to commit to addressing those separately. I'm going to do another 15 minutes tonight, just on the oddball items, and it will involve going from room to room. But I'll set my timer, and hey, I'll get a little walking done! My goal is to stop moving the piles over and over and instead find a permanent home or else dispose of the items.

My computer is crashing a lot. It's been an ongoing problem. I really need to clear my desk so I can make room for a new computer!
I've been doing a lot of laundry. I keep saying I'll clear my desk but I don't get around to it. I'm going to do one minute right now after I post this message!

Update: I did it for one minute. Actually 2 minutes. It turns out lots of the surface stuff is not junk. I could hardly throw any of it away.
Picked up library book receipt - need that but where to put it?
Picked up insurance card that is no longer needed - need to shred or cut up to throw away but scissors is in another room, I'm not leaving this room and getting distracted.
Picked up school papers for my son. Need them but where to put them? In another room but not leaving room.
Picked up voting papers and mail-in ballot. Need them, but don't want to vote yet, put it aside in a bin that's already on my desk marked to-do by computer.
Picked up bunch of clips. Have to talk to my husband to see if he wants to keep it or throw it out as it's not something I want. But he's outside the room so I put it down.

So in two minutes I made no progress. What am I doing wrong??

I haven't made much progress on the home office, but I spent an hour yesterday with my teenage son cleaning his room. He gave away a large box of old toys and books. That felt good.

Good for you, SWEDE_SU for coming up with a solution to the missing stub!

STICKI, making an appointment for decluttering is a great idea. And playing games after dinner! How fun!

Today I got the bare minimum of decluttering done (15 minutes) but that's not going to cut it. But I'm not giving up, so for today... emoticon

Great job, Submom! I have been keeping my kitchen table clear now - it's been four days with a clear table and we're really enjoying it. We have been playing family games on it after dinner.

I've been making more and more use of my phone to make lists. I'm going to start assigning an appointment for 10 minutes a day to do my desk. I'll work up to more as I know 10 minutes a day isn't going to cut it ultimately.

Already did one session of decluttering today! emoticon

Got rid of more old mail, old coupons, etc.

I'm also realizing I will need at least 2 sessions a day to meet my Thanksgiving deadline. It doesn't sound like much, 15-30 minutes a day. But I also know that doing a 6-hour blitz will just leave me exhausted and discouraged. So, I'm sticking with slow and steady.

Yes, that paperwork is a recurring theme!

Slowly but surely we can get rid of it.

My biggest challenge will be tackling the piles of papers on all three desks in the home office. I need to get it under control before the holidays.

I hope things go well for your brother, STICKI.

Making myself declutter BEFORE I get on the computer (and actually sticking to that rule) is definitely helping me!

Today I found our car insurance cards...the ones we've been carrying around expired in September. YIKES. Good thing no one got a ticket or anything. Anyway, those are now all switched out.

Have a great Sunday, everyone!

Well, no sooner do I declare the desk to be my goal then my kitchen table is suddenly decluttered. It seems I have a contrarian nature!
But it was also I needed to make space for the kids to make cards for my brother who just got out of the hospital so clearing the kitchen table was suddenly urgent.

I threw out some obvious trash on the desk but that's all I got to so far. There are piles of "important" papers I need to go through and take action on so that would be next.

Great! Glad you all are joining in!

I'm glad to say I got 20 minutes of decluttering done on the leaning tower of paper. That first pass is usually easy because there are always lots of obvious things to toss. Now, the real excavation can begin!

I'll jump on the bandwagon and say my desk too! I can't see the surface of it and the floor around it is stacked with stuff and when my daughter comes to see me things "crunch" and break under her foot! So that'll be something I'll work on and shoot to get done by Thanksgiving.

Thanks for starting this, Submom!

Once I get back from my trip---it will be my desk and dining room---we put our tree and my house collection in there so if I have it all ready, then not so much stress with Thanksgiving and holiday decorating.

i'm in. it's my desk - i have files and piles on it because my file cabinet is filled with old papers. and if i can possibly get through my desk, there is a shelf buried under piles in the corner of the office. that's next…

15 minutes a day of getting through sections of this mess. i *am* going to find my desk...

Fall is here and Thanksgiving is right around the corner. Is there a project or an area of clutter still needing work in your house? Wouldn't it be great to get it under control by Thanksgiving? And it wouldn't it be great to support each other in this mission?

For me, paper clutter is a huge challenge. Bills, junk mail, magazines, school papers...you get the idea. I do well for a few days. For example, I'll put junk mail straight into the recycle bin rather than bring it into the house. But a few days later, I fall off track, and there's a little mail here and there, with a twist of filing, stationery, and a variety of household items mixed in. And a lot of this is on our dining room table, which currently doubles as an office/computer station.

So my goal is to get my dining room table under control. That will mean a specific spot for incoming mail, bills to be paid, papers to be filed. The two "miscellaneous" paper baskets will be reduced to one (maybe less) by Thanksgiving. The "drifters" on this table will be put away, given away, or thrown away.

I will do this by working on this table and this area for 15 minutes a day. I cannot check email or -gasp- log in to Spark People until this daily requirement is met. So if you don't hear from me.... emoticon

The rest I will play by ear.

Are you in? Tell us your about your personal challenge, and how you plan to attack it.
