To me the opposite of clutter is calm. It is that feeling of being able to relax in your physical or mental environment.

I'm with ForestPal on this one -- to me the opposite of clutter is clarity and also confidence. I'm coming to see that my clutter -- physical and mental - is a way I give my power away. That it all stems from fear of not having enough or not being good enough -- the first has resulted in a TON of stuff that just doesn't fit in my one-bedroom apartment and the second has resulted in a LOT of extra pounds. I'm doing a Year To Clear program and it's helping me see this clearly (sorry for the pun!). Thanks for asking the question, because I think it's a really important one. My sense is that even in the process of clearing (not just when it's completely clear), I'm gainig clarity and confidence and realize that I am a fine human being just the way I am.

ooooh! MISSG180!! your post inspired me -- I was wondering what to do with my room of horrors and when I read what you posted I realized I could do the same thing -- a library!! that would be awesome -- I could get these bookshelves out of the living room and put them upstairs -- off to take some measurements now! emoticon

Serenity. Right now my kitchen is a *mess* -- my whole living space is kind of a disaster -- because The Offspring are tasked with cleaning it up and they both have to work first. I've been concentrating on other parts of the house, so I'm making myself live with that to keep from losing my mind, but it's stressful.

OTOH, I am looking forward to adding more bookcases and turning half my basement family room into a cozy library. I don't need to have NO stuff, I just need the stuff I have to have a place to live.

The opposite of clutter, at least to me, is the lack of unimportant things. It is to be able to look around your environment and clearly see the things that bring you happy memories, happy thoughts, happy feelings. It means you see these things clearly and without effort because they are not hidden by or amongst meaningless, unimportant "stuff".

It is not the lack of things but the organization of what we have.which makes us feel calm.

Clarity? I love your question & will give it some thought. Contemplating it gives me a physical pleasant reaction.

Something I read today made me stop and ask myself -- what is the opposite of clutter?
I'm not sure I have an answer but I'd love to hear any thoughts you might have --
serenity is one word that springs to mind but it doesn't seem to encapsulate everything --
what do you think?
