Interesting about the donuts. I think I'll call the DD in Hopewell and see if we can get any leftovers. We're having a "Donuts with Dad" PTO thing the beginning of December, and that might be a good way to keep them from going to waste. I'm the PTO president, and we were just talking about seeing if DD would donate stuff-like coffee or something. I'll ask about the donuts that are left at the end of the night.

I live near Hopewell Virginia, so do you know who I'd contact-just the store manager?

Thanks

I'll suggest it to my manager and see if maybe we can. I hate to see all of them go to waste. :(
Even though they are fatty, they're still perfectly good. Well DD is popping up all over the place all of a sudden over here. One popped up in Chester which is 15/20 minutes depending on traffic, then over here in Chesterfield County which is 15/20 minutes and one is opening up after Thanksgiving right in my back yard! Which will be the one I'm going to work in after my training. We'll be very busy b/c we have 2 major plants right by us. And I'll be opening (at 4:15AM). Yay me. I have never had to get up that early before ever.

Have a great day!

Wow, you should recommend someone volunteering to take them to a homeless shelter or a foster house. I mean, they should still be good right?! I love Dunkin Donuts, they all closed near me, the closest is about a 35-40 minute drive. We usually go 3 times a year. I think its good thats all we go because they are fatty!!!

Dunkin Donuts seems to try to use up all their supplies and not throw them away. I was worried about it, but when I got there, I realized they weren't as wasteful as I feared. The only thing they do that upsets me is any left over donuts, they throw away. We can't take any with us. :P. Unless you dumpster dive.

I also mulch my leaves. I use them for mulch in my flower beds. Because of the size of my yard, I bought a leaf shredder from Gardener's Supply last year. With what I have saved in the cost of the biodegradable yard waste bags that are required by our city, the shredder has almost paid for itself already. Add in the price of mulch and compost that I don't have to buy, and I'm ahead of the game financially. I also save some of the shredded leaves and add them to my compost bin to balance the kitchen wastes. Great stuff!

Are they really that bad? I was wondering about it and almost bought them the other day.

I have heard bad things about those green bags too! I will tell you that I picked up these 'fresh crispers' from the dollar general about a month ago. They work great, I am actually going to go search for more of them. There's this little white disc with some type of fresh keeper inside. You place the disc in the crisper and anything you keep in your bin for that month stays fresh! I definately like them. If I come across them again, I will post the name and brand of them, sorry it's slipped my mind!

So i raked up the neighbors leaves, mulching them with the lawn mower and use them for my planted trees. I took one of my maple trees in the house to see if it will keep growing thru the winter months

Once again the leaves are falling. I am going to be raking up the leaves , including some of the neighbors leaves, mulch them up and use them to cover up the 60+ trees I have growing in containers. It is also a good time to use grass seeds. I put some down on the bare spots, cover them with some free compost and a layer of the mulched up leaves. I have had grass growing by the time the snow started falling

I am a science teacher and I have my 5th graders do a science fair every year. Last year one of my students tested the green bags against regular ones-she put apples in them. The regular ones kept the fruit fresher than the green bags. How about the bags that you can vacuum the air out of?

My mom tried the green bags and thought they were awful. she said the produce got all slimy after a few days.

Lately I've been hearing about "Green" bags for putting fresh veggies in and storing them. Does anyone here have any experience with those? If so, how do you like them?

That is a great idea! I think I will start doing that when I volunteer at the church and whenever I go out to eat. A lot of times there aren't any paper towels left and we all know how packed the women's bathrooms are! No time to air dry our hands!I think I only have room for a washcloth though... emoticon

To THEMOTIVATOR1. I've been collecting seeds from various trees from parks and such and trying to start some. I've had some luck, but quite a few did not make it. I'm just starting to learn about this and I know that trees are harder to grow from seed than other plants. Did you keep your seedlings in a darker area or right out in the sunlight? I'm a bit confused about that.

I use to bring sandwiches wrapped in dish towels and face cloths to work (but now just eat at work). They were better then plastic baggies, they could just be tossed in the laundry when I came home. It was a good napkin as well (all wrapped into one).

I haven't seen that commercial as of yet. You would think the growers of corn would come up with something more meaningful to the healthy minded people! Although it was a clever advertisement, I agree that it did seem to go against them~

Did anyone see that new commercial put out by the corn farmers or someone like that. A couple are sitting on a blanket in a park and the girl is trying to get the guy to eat a popsicle. He says no it has high fructose corn syrup in it. She says so why is that bad (or something like that), it's made from corn. He can't remember so he eats the popsicle.

It reminds me of the Garden of Eden and Eve getting Adam to bite the apple. IT is suppose to be for the corn people, but in my estimation it seems to go against it.

We're pretty lucky in my home town Davis. They do pick up glass as well as the rest, and there's a fairly strong environmentalist intended ethic in the whole town. We're not always smart about our environmentalism, but almost all of us try to look like we're trying at least.

Simpleshoes are shoes and sneakers made from organic cotton, hemp and old tires (they say)! They're online, but have a few "real" stores! The cheapest pair I've seen online is $55!

I have not heard of Simpleshoes but I'd like to know what they are.

On a positive note: My friends and I just got up @ 4:30 this morning and hiked a popular trail in San Diego (Cowles Mountain)I was pleasantly surprised at how respectful the early morning walkers were. Nobody was littering. Most of the people stuck to the trails out of respect for the habitat areas. All of the dogs were leashed and nobody left there dogs poop around. What a nice hike!

Just a vent -

Today was garbage pickup day in my neighborhood. We are lucky that we have curbside recycling pickup the same day. Our city collects paper, cardboard, #1 & #2 plastics, tin and aluminum cans (sadly, no glass).

As usual, I got irritated on my morning walk seeing so much recyclable stuff hanging out of everyone's regular garbage can. While my dog's patience lasts, I move some major things from people's garbage into their recycling cans. It's not much, but it's a bit. I usually have one 15 gallon garbage bag in my garbage can, and a much fuller recycling bin (I coerce DH to bring his recyclables home from work).

Does anyone have creative ideas for encouraging my neighbors to use the recycling bin more?

The other day I stopped at a few different landscaping businesses and got some empty containers for free. yesterday i got some free compost and mixed it with some top soil and replanted some of the maple trees i have growing, they out grew the smaller containers. I replanted about 25 and have many more to go. I watered them with the rain water I collected in the 55 gallon plastic drum I have.

The "It's the janitor's job" comment used to really get to me. I don't hear it as much now that I teach elementary as when I taught junior high. I have been known to ask the janitor to skip cleaning my floors if the students have somehow left with them a mess. Then I have the students clean them (including sweeping since the janitor couldn't get to that for all of the trash on the floor) the next day before recess. I don't have to do that very often, but it's pretty effective.

My husband was in a similar situation once. He picked up the garbage & then said to the person (very sweetly) "Excuse me, you dropped your trash. Would you like it back?" The person took it without saying anyting and threw it away. I'm sure they thought he was a jerk, but I loved it.

My bread recipe:
http://recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-de
tail.asp?recipe=330541

I adapted this from a recipe I found for Greek white bread, but the technique is pretty failsafe and a little quicker than the normal 2 rise process.

I've tried this with all purpose flour, whole wheat flour, bread flour. I've used it with all water and no milk. I've used it with 2 tbs of olive oil instead of 1. It's very adaptable.

This recipe is my current daily bread, and next time, I will let it raise a little more. I'm not completely satisfied with its crumb.

I hope this is the right place to share this. It feels environmentally friendly and my very own body friendly to be baking my own bread from a short list of pretty simple ingredients.

Do your best and let go of the outcome.

Yesterday I planted about 30 small maples in containers to be replanted on city property when they get big enough. I found that putting layer of newspapers in side the top of a plastic trash container then adding soil the maple seeds and more soil worked well. I took the trees to a local park and planted them

Want some more maple seedlings?? My neighbor's maple tree dropped so many helicopters in our yard and now we have seedlings everywhere! :) They're cute though; I am planning to save a few.

I'm excited - I have a pepper! I've never had a bell pepper plant before, and we have a little tiny baby pepper growing on there! It's about 2 inches long - too cute :)

Wow you are having great luck starting you seedlings. That is great. I saw a teacher a couple of years ago (I think it was a second grade class) use apple seeds for a class project. I thought that was a neat idea. You get a nice tree with a chance to have some good fruit as a bonus. Keep sprouting.

A few weeks ago i used a plastic garbage can lid, put some newspaper on the bottom, put a layer of composted material, then added some maple tree seeds and another layer of dirt. I have About 50 of them growing and am planning on replanting them. This morning i while checking on the 19 pines trees I planted I found a lot more maples growing along with a few ash trees.

Yeah for the babies of the world! With the ocean warning, it is the same way for us in san diego. The beach is too polluted after rain/run off to go for three days after a storm. It stinks because there is usually a lot of smog in the air that comes here from LA so the BEST days to go to the beach are after it rains when it is really clear and clean-looking, but then the sand and water is really polluted.

Well I know my three year old would yell at someone for littering because she will pick it up if they do not!

Littering is such a big pet peeve for me. Who on earth whether you are green or not wants to have waste every where. Living near the oceans a lot of the trash that is thrown out the window ends up in the ocean after a big rain. We actually have advisories on the news to stay out of the ocean for a few days after the rain to let the contaminants get diluted more. Talk about making me sick.

I work with teenagers too and I give detentions if I find trash at their area after they have left. I have seen students put recycling in the trash when the recycling is right next to the trash. I have given them a choice of detention or pulling it out of the trash. They usually ask if I am serious, but then pull it out of the trash.

It drives me crazy.

Good for you. work with teenagers most of the time and they don't think a thing about throwing stuff on the classroom floors or on the school grounds. They could right next to a trash can and they just drop it. When I have said something about it they usually respond with the statement that it is the janitor's job. It blows me away. I spend a lot of time between classes pick up the garbage in my classroom. I sometimes wonder what people’s homes look like if they acted that way in their homes. There is a scary thing maybe they do.

Today I saw a woman, who was sitting about a foot from a garbage can, throw her gum wrapper on the ground. I got up, picked it up and threw it away (without looking at her or saying anything). What would you have done?
