I'm about to order some xeric ornamentals for the front yard from my local conservation organization.

Some of the most beautiful container gardens I saw were on houseboats in Seattle. I didn't even know, back then, that you could grow vegetables in containers! LOL That reminds me that I should go ahead and get some lettuce planted in one of the big white buckets I got from the Safeway bakery.

And even more off topic: The parsley we planted last year made it through the winter and is already greening up this year!

It's a shame some people don't respect other's property anymore. When I was a kid everyone in town knew who you belonged to, and if you did something to destroy someone's yard or take from their gardens without permission, your parents new it before you walked into the door. Seems like many today only care about what they want.

I garden in container garden as i move frequently or live in a trailer park for RV's and they don't let you put things in the ground.
I have 3 small fir trees stuck in Cedar stumps about 2 1/2 feet tall and about 2 feet or more wide. They were given to me by a friend when he moved. I love them to death and they are doing well. I also have plants in my home as well. Glad to hear that there are others who are like minded about trees, and gardening. Oh in my garden I have flowers, herbs, strawberries, and vegetables as well. glad to be a part of a wonderful team that wants to make the world a better place to live

Thank you for the info, nice site. I am still trying to get Home Depot, the schools and a local College Extension to have fund raisers selling trees.

I started a patch of melons on the corner near the house last year and they did really well until some squirrelly woman picked them all before they were ripe! I was very surprised that it wasn't the middle-schoolers on their way to work. At least the plants helped clean the air while they were growing!

Time to look into what plans and plants for the yard are. Perhaps start growing plants indoors

SIRIRADHA- The little Maple tree I brought into the house last fall is slowly growing taller and the buds are starting to show. Who needs the ground hog when a little maple tree will do. Here is an idea that worked very well the last time I planted seeds. I took the plastic lid from a garbage container and the large plastic base from a dog house. I put layers of newspapers on the bottom, I put down a layer of free compost, then added the seeds and covered with another layer of compost. I watered them, after they started growing I planted some in containers and the rest in a local park. With the plants already growing I didn't have to dig any holes, just slide the trees off the base and added top soil. Last fall I checked they were growing nicely,.

THEMOTIVATOR1: great idea about the tree seedlings! We have Chinese Elms out here that drive us nuts because their seedlings pop up everywhere. On the east side of town, the new developments have almost no greenery, so I've been giving them away on freecycle. You would not believe the response I get on those!

I agree. I just moved into a small townhouse complex and there is a large open ballpark and then parking lot. However, it faces west and if there is a good snow storm the snow just piles up. Apparently it will even block the door and windows. I'll be on a campaign now to try and get some trees planted so there can be a break wall to prevent such large drifts. Also this will help eventually provide some shade and cleaner air.

Hey!

A little depressed here about strees and not losing :( But I was able to hear yesterday that my hometown air is now 'cleaner' NBC Nightly news did a study on cleaner air in notoriously dirty cities. Pittsburgh's life expectancy has increased by 10 months as a result of our efforts. I hope we keep it up!! and BTW: Pittsburgh is a beautiful city, it still keeps its 'dirty' tag because of the steel mills. M~

I've started to gather up(instead of curbside recycling) newspapers for a new bed - using the lasagna method. Last year's tomatoes got way out of hand. They get a special bed this year.

Compost! It's really amazing all that can be composted. You can compost your newspapers or any other paper, including cardboard. It compost quickly tear paper & cardboard into small pieces. If you don't have room for a compost bin outside, consider worm-composting.http://www.css.cornell.edu

I think the biggest take away from hearing about the recycling centers closing and that we ship our garbage around the world, is that we should focus on reduction.

If we reduce how much we actually need to dispose of in the first place, that is the first step to being truly green.

Consider buying reusable containers and seperating out a large container of yogurt, applesauce, etc into your own single servings. Even potato chips, cheeze its can be easily put into a small round/rectangular container and...they don't get all broken! Bonus!!!

happy greening.

I only learned recently that China buys a lot of that stuff. A couple years ago I started a CD recycling program at work and learned that the center I ship our batches too in turn ships them by container load to China. Interesting stuff. It surprised me a bit that it was cost effective enough to ship scraps around the world!

I heard this on NPR that since Americans are consuming less (TVs, etc), China isn't buying as much cardboard from our recycling centers! So recycling centers may be in trouble. I didn't know it was even China who bought the things!

Hopefully it is not widespread. I haven't heard anything about it in my area, but being near a major metro area helps with stuff like that. My parents are in Maine and I'm always bugging my dad about getting more recycling going in their town, but the town is so small that they just can't get it to be cost-effective yet.

I know. The word on the street is there is no market for the goods they are receiving then shipping elsewhere. I wonder if this is going to become widespread. I thought I would call my family who live in a bit larger city where the city garbage pickup also takes their recycling and see if there's anything brewing in their area about this.

Just wanted to pop in and say hi since I joined the team. It's exciting to find people talking about these things here. I live in a fairly small town (12000) with not a lot of access to services/products to support my interests for a more friendly lifestyle.

I just found out this weekend that our recycling center is closing and that the one in the two larger towns (state capitol and another) have already closed. What is a person to do? I was hoping that with the volume that goes through our recycling center we were well on our way to having curbside or some sort of expanded program, and now they are closing around here left and right?

I may just have to move.
LOL
Have a great day.

Hey Team!

I just want to let you all know that I'm sorry for not participating as much lately, but I started grad school and it's super hectic! On top of that I am swamped at work. So my participation is going to be minimal over the next couple months.

But, I am still committed to losing weight, eating right, and saving the world from nasty litter-ers and animal abusers!

I hope you all continue your conservation plight and are successful on your journey back to "healthy"

M~

Thank you PRERIE Working out side most of my life I appreciate the changes in the weather and the beauty of nature. Truck drivers have the best window office view, so Traveling across I-94 thru jackson Mich. one day I got a good sense of smell from the fragrance of the pine trees. That is where i came up with the adopt a highway for trees. HAVE A GREAT HEALTHY ACTIVE DAY.

Earlier this year I visited a local state branch road office. The state has an adopt a highway program where people or groups sign up to pick up trash along a designated section of roadway. So I inquired about adopting a section to plant tress and flowers. This would beatify the area, give the motorist something to remember the city for, help the environment, and be a good fund raiser for schools selling trees and plants and save the state money. I asked the employee if she would pass this on to the main office. Well apparently she did, the state is looking for people to plant certain areas to reduce maintenance.

BREAKING NEWS ok broken news. The economy is in trouble. Let's see the Deocrats passed the North American Unfair Trade Agreement which sent American jobs to other countries. The lending institution made it too easy for borrowers to buy a home with balloon mortgages. The government has no sustainable development plans. The health care industry and energy costs have drained the publics money so now they can't afford to buy things that would help the economy.

Thats great idea! Hopefully they comply. I just thought about our church too, if they are like most, they have socials after mass. You could consider asking to donate them to churches in the community too.. Sadly, I'm not craving one, I might have to make the drive!
