I survived CERT and am certified (as opposed to certifiable which many of you are certain I am) emoticon

Any of you ever get a chance to take the CERT (Certified Emergency Response Team) course offered by Nashville, take it. It means giving up two Saturdays but so worth it. Many of us have had prior training so it is a refresher course of sorts and gives updated ways of doing stuff. A brief overview:
Community Emergency Response Team Training
The Mayors Office of Emergency Management CERT training. CERT stands for Community Emergency Response Team and constitutes a 16 hour training program conducted by an instructional team made up of professionals from the Fire Dept, Health Dept, Red Cross, etc. Some of the topics covered during the training include Disaster Preparedness, Terrorism Awareness, Fire Suppression, Disaster First Aid, Search and Rescue, and Disaster Psychology. Most of the instruction involves hands on activity.

There is no cost for this training and its a great opportunity to not only learn ways to protect your family and your neighborhood in emergency situations but this can provide a core of volunteers who are able to response to community needs during times of emergency or disaster.

Let's hope we never have another flood event, but seems we are becoming tornado alley of sorts and our neighborhood has been hit 4 times in less than 3 years with lightning. Fortunately no major fires.

Does your neighborhood have a plan in a disaster. Our doesn't either, even after the waters rising on Percy Priest many of the neighbors aren't too interested in getting one going.

Got a wake up call, someone handed me a picture and I wondered who that fat old woman was until I realized it was me! (Bad enough the scale lies, but pics lie too) If I'm going to continue on with this project need to make myself a project as well. The arthritic psoriasis has again cleared enough to hit the pool so have no more excuses for skipping water aerobics!

Have a great Sunday,
Kelly

Hi everybody. I have to admit first that I haven't been on this site in forever. I've been exercising, watching my food intake since 1/09 and have been successful BUT I've fallen off the track. Though my weight loss is acceptable to me, I need to 'knuckle down' and get back with the whole program. I have been active on other teams but very negligent on the SparkNashville team.

I tried to read a lot of the posts but I feel so lost, I decided to confess that I've been terribly MIA. I will try to catch up.

Its Friday and I cannot wait to get home to my bed. I've been up since 2:00am as I just could not sleep. Too much on my mind. Of course I feel alseep right when its time for the alarm to go off. It will be nap time and then workout time as I don't have the energy to do more than left my leg to climb into the bed.

I hope everyone has a fantabulous weekend!!!

Thanks Wynonna! I needed that. emoticon

I agree, Kelly. Curves needs to open earlier or stay open later. And the one I go to closes from 12 - 3 every day for lunch and because it's very slow during these hours. That means I can't get in there when I get off work early on Friday's. I'd go Friday evenings but for now Hayley has to go do her band thing every Friday night. Maybe after football season I can get back into a routine at Curves but for now I just need to get out and walk.

Wynonna, you've got nothing to loose by giving it a try (well, you do) they give some good advice, maybe use it for guidance?

Laura, you'd think that Curves would finally get it and have longer hours. (Especially since so many around here nailed their doors shut.) BUMMER about the bakery moving, I am going to resist asking where it's moving to - for now!

I didn't make it up there yesterday, hope it was another successful day.

Well, here it is Friday already, all ya'all have a great week-end! Don't forget to move it move it move it

Y'all are right, Hendersonville is growing fast. When I first moved here it was quite the small town atmosphere. Now we are by far the largest city in Sumner County!

Black Eyed Pea did a Parks day back in the end of May and we got around $1800 from them then. They decided to do it again to see what they could come up with.

After the flooding, we estimated over $1 million in damages to our parks. We just recently got the go ahead to purchase 2 full sets of inline hockey boards, replacement soccer goals and some fencing to put around the football fields so that we would be able to have our fall sports.

We are very thankful for the wonderful community around us that have stepped up to help out. Taylor Swift even gave us $100,000 to help rebuild our major playground here.

It is still overwhelming the amount of damage and cleanup efforts that are still ongoing and will be for quite some time.

Kelly, I know what you mean about Hendersonville! I grew up in the Madison/Hendersonville area and they both have changed drastically. For anyone who grew up in Madison, Sweet N Sassy bakery is moving after a gazillion years at the same location! I used to walk down there on Saturday mornings with my grandfather for doughnuts. Probably part of the reason I'm in the shape I'm in. LOL!

I have been slacking terribly with exercise lately. Between work, running Hayley to and from band practices and games, and domestic bliss I just feel like I don't have time or energy to work out. I feel really, really guilty about it too, especially since I'm paying for a Curves membership. My one goal for today is to go work out after work but with the way our afternoon schedule has shaped up, I don't know if I'll be out of here in time to get there. emoticon I need a swift kick in the pants to get motivated or something!

Have a great day everyone!

Laura

Hi Kelly good to see you

Dawn the only thing I have with an elastic band are my work out clothes and a couple of skirts that I've made. I believe yuo should wear fitted items especially bottoms because it keeps you on track.

Has anyone ever tried any of the Prevention magazine programs? I always get emails from them and was just curious if they were any good.

Hoping the weather holds out as I brought my clothes with me to hit the greenway after work and then I'll go home and do level 2 shred.. 3 more days and then I'll move up to level 3.

Didn't realize there are still Black Eyed Peas around! That is wonderful of them to do that, hmmm wonder if I can get up there.

I tell you, Hville is no longer a sleepy little town-was up there recently thought I'd had a brain fart and was in the wrong place...

Dawn, happy to see you continuing with your new career, you have so many talents! Watch out Navy, she's on the loose and apt to make it a prettier place to be. Now to check out your link.

Have a good one everyone!

Eat at Black Eyed Pea in Hendersonville today. 20% of sales will go toward helping to rebuild Hendersonville Parks that were destroyed by the May flooding.

Thanks!

Man today was busy! This is the first time I've been able to sit and think. Didn't get my R in last night or the S in today.

For anyone in the Hendersonville area tomorrow, please go eat at Black Eyed Pea on Gallatin Road. They are helping out the Parks (again) by donating 20% of sales to help rebuild from teh May flooding devastation. They have done this once already and wanted to do it again.

We still have an entire set of baseball fields that haven't been able to be demo-ed to get ready to replace what was damaged. We are still struggling trying to get things back up and running again.

You are very right Kelly about the fitted waist... A few years back I bought one of the Dr. Phil books (I think it was the Weight Loss Challenge book) and in it he said to wear clothes that are just tight enough to be uncomfortable... he said your body will automatically start doing stuff to lose weight. He said then as soon as those clothes start to feel comfortable get rid of them and go down another size or two, making sure they are not comfy and repeat the process.

I'll admit, I've not tried it, almost everything I own has an elastic waist band, so I guess, I'll just have to break out some of my girtles and wear them to encourage me...lol

WOW lots of chatter going on, have to make sure I look in more often so I can keep up!
Hi Wynonna, great to have your sense of humor back with us and great job the REST of you. Anytime there's a challenge with even 7 hrs sleep I lose that is one thing I've never been able to do unless I am really really sick. One thing though, got in a whole lot of steps at Summit yesterday and my legs didn't fall off! (Even took the stairs twice) Been kind of lax with walking more than necessary. Oh, if you want to avoid overeating at a party, wear pants with a fitted waist.

Well, again I missed the R by one hour. But I will get the EST today. I've got a good 2-3 hrs ahead of me to push mow the jungle outside my house (it's getting really tall) and after that I'll be slurping down the rest of my water. I've got almost half my water down already.

Pamelane09... let me just say that I applaud you for realizing quickly that you weren't where you were meant to be. I have spent that last 11 years in a field that I absolutely hate, I am very good at my work; however, I just don't enjoy it. I am just now starting to make changes in my life. I am going from Bookkeeping and Taxes to Interior Design (and hopefully being a reservist for the USN).

There is a book called What Color is your parachute? You can find it at the library. It talks about what you are interested in and describes different jobs in that field. There is also a book called Occupational Outlook also found in the library which lists the different occupations, the requirements, and how much they make as well as job outlook. The thing to remember is to be positive. The library helps hundreds of people every day with resumes, cover letters, job listings, and other information and it is free.

I've had a lot happen in the last few weeks. I started my new job mid-August as a 5th grade math teacher. I was so glad to finally have a job because I was unable to get a full-time position for the past year. However, it didn't go well. I loved the school and the kids, but I just wasn't happy. I was literally sick to my stomach every morning and I cried every morning and afternoon. I was miserable. I was losing a lot of weight because I wasn't eating. I talked to a LOT of people and every conversation led me to believe teaching just wasn't right for me. So, Friday September 3rd was my last day. Everyone, even my boss, was super supportive. They understood. My family and friends are great, too. I hate that what I've been working towards for so long is not what I want to do, but I am glad I found out while I am still young and I have the time and support to change it.

I tried getting back on track with my Curves workout last week, but I got a horrible cold (probably due to stress of a major life change). I'm much better now and was able to do a full workout at Curves today, even if it was at a much lower energy target. I'm much happier, and looking forward to starting something new, once I decide what that is! I'm looking in to a lot of options, including schools of architecture and culinary schools. I'm open to any tips or advice, and I'll keep you posted on what I do next!

Today is my step-daughters 16th Birthday, so this evening will be busy (& I am having a piece of cake! LOL!) but I am going to do everything I can to get in my exercise. I don't care what time everyone leaves tonight, I am either walking the dog or getting on the treadmill!

JUANSGUERA - Thanks for setting up these goals, I am going to try the new one for today. Can't wait! I am not sure if I can do the push-ups or not. At the first of the year I was being treated for a torn labrum in my shoulder and did a few months of physical therapy. I am going to try, may have to delete that from the training but will still do the other 2 exercises!

Good Luck this week everyone - hoping we all can stay on track with our exercise & food intake.

Well, I missed the T yesterday - very busy day (didn't even get to watch the Titans game!)

I've got my T for today and am working on the others. Still having trouble getting the R - just can't seem to function with more than 7hrs of rest. I felt groggy all day yesterday (when I got 8hrs). I got 7 last night and am not feeling groggy or slowed down today.

TL04--My weekend was a bust as well... but I have set up some new workout challenges that started today... and I'm hoping those will help to motivate me. I did finally get 8 hours of sleep last night, so hopefully that will help me.

TEAM--The new challenges that are posted in the challenge forum are more for me than anything, however if anyone wants to join me on the entire challenge or on bits and pieces as a "Cheerleader" please join in. On the strength training if all you can do is 25 low impact jumping jacks or 25 wall push-ups, then do it and check on me to see that I'm doing what I need to for the Navy. The same with the Interval Running Challenge, if all you can commit to is walking 30-60 minutes a day, then do it and stop by the challenge and be my "Cheerleader." I am so far behind on what I NEED to be able to do and my weight loss it is pathetic, so I NEED ALL THE HELP AND SUPPORT I CAN GET!!!

This weekend was a bust for exercise! Freedom Farm had a dog event at Moss Wright Park yesterday, then we walked around Festival by the Lake. Our dog Buddy was a huge hit - everyone wanted to pet him! He slept all afternoon & night. I drank plenty of water this weekend and got plenty of rest, but the exercise I wanted & planned to do got pushed out of my schedule completely! Gotta work much harder this week!

Well at DEP we didn't do any PT after all, we marched, but only for a few minutes. With everything that was going on with my sweet little special needs kitty, I wasn't focused on my workout. I told him good bye and that it was ok to leave me last night before I went to bed, and some time during the night he left me. So now Medianoche is in Kitty heaven. He looked so peaceful when I woke up this morning to look at him.

Today I will try to get in the 30 minutes of exercise, though I'm thinking I'll just rest, since I'm starting two new "tougher" fitness challenges starting tomorrow.

Just checking in after a long day at work. We had the Festival by the Lake today and man was it hot! Rain storms just missed us.

Thu: EST - 3pts
Fri: ET - 2pts
Sat: EST - 3pts

Let's hope I can get the 8 hrs of rest in at some point. So far I keep missing it by one hour. I just can't seem to stay asleep longer than 7. :)

Ladies,

You are doing awesome...

I did not get my "E" yesterday after all, so I only got 3 points yesterday.

For today thought since I have "special needs" kitty that had a rough day yesterday and a very rough night, I've have very little sleep, so all I can hope for is "EST" for today, which will mean only 3 points for today as well.

I wanted to mention, that I am setting up some "tougher" challenges for two of my other teams (Losing Weight for the Military, and 30-somethings with 25-49 lbs to lose) I am going to post these extra challenges in the team challenges section and those that want to participate are welcome to join in. (These were personal challenges for me that I've not been able to be consistant with, but I'm hoping that by setting them up as team challenges it will help keep me accountable and motivated.)

You ladies are doing awesome... I'm still needing an "E", but with this headache I have, I'm not sure if I'll get it or not. I'm going to go take some excedrin and see if it eases up for me.

I'm supposed to run intervals today, but I'll be happy if I just walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes. I had a DEP (Delayed Entry Program) meeting at the NAVY recruiters office tomorrow, so I don't want to overdo today, what they will try and kill tomorrow.

R rested 8 hours 1 hour this afternoon 7 at night
E walked 60 minutes walking 1.7 miles
S Water 8 cups
T talked about it
Who knew that the hardest part is getting the rest?
I thought that would be the easiest part.
At least got the walk before it rained and rained.

Getting everything but the 8 hours, going to have to do a summary tomorrow night.
Somehow missed the sparkmail about REST.

You ladies are doing good... I am very proud of you all!

I got the R (9 hours sleep and feel like I need 9 more).

The E I haven't done yet, but will do soon (I hope).

The S I am just finishing my 4th (16 oz) cup so I'm good there, though I doubt I'll get my gallon in that I need to drink on a daily basis.

and the T, I think this is my second post for the day so I'm good there. I just need to finish my work so I can go exercise.

R - So far today I missed the R by one hour (again). My schedule doesn't always permit me 8 hours, so I shoot for 6-7 each night. Pretty consistent with 6.5-7 anyway.

E - Got 15 min of walking so far trudging around the rain soaked park checking to make sure things are ready for a festival tomorrow. Let's hope the rain will stop at some point so that the festival doesn't get rained out.

S - not so great. Only downed 3 8oz glasses so far.

T - Letting ya'll know that I may have to pull out a kayak or canoe soon if this rain doesn't stop. I still have work stuff to get ready for the weekend!

Leah--please take care of that knee... you're health is of the most importance. Just do what you can, and it sounds like your body will like you better if you focus on rest and water. (and stop in to see us as well).

Wynonna--the R for yesterday was actually the sleep that we had on Wednesday night, so it was the hours of sleep you woke up with yesterday morning. Sorry if that was a bit confusing.

Hey there.... ok the only part I got of REST today was T. Sorry. I'll do better tomorrow. But hey ... I'm still hanging in there. I can't really exercise right now cause I've got something crazy going on with my knew. Off to doc in the a.m. I am swelling bad and having numbness in my right leg and knee...even the bottoms of my feet are swollen. Kinda scary. But I can drink the water and sleep too. Maybe the sleep challenge will help me to go to bed after I get off in the mornings. I am living on little rest! Hope you all are doing great.
Hugz,
Leah
PS: thanks for the great challenge Dawn!

I love water! I start out every day with my 32 oz bottle before I have breakfast. Sometimes I even crave water. That's definitely not an issue for me! emoticon
