Lots of music, including the Beach Boys, does it for me. High on the list of getting me smiling is Motown.

Many years ago, when I had a job that I hated and would wake up screaming and pleading with the universe, "No, don't make me go there again!," I got the idea to put anything by Bruce on. Within the first few chords, I'd get out of bed to face the day.

Wow! I'm sooooo glad so many of you took the time to read my idea! I never thought in a million years that I'd actually come up with something that would help people like this! Seeing all of your responses definitely will make it into my "Good Vibrations" jar (which I like to make it a point to listen to at least ONE Beach Boys song while writing the good things down and putting into that jar. I mean, really, who can stay upset while listening to the Beach Boys?)

I currently have gone only one day without putting anything in the doom jar, but that's ok cuz that's what my first goal was! So I at least did that much! I would have made it two days until I started panicking over my English grade and worrying that I won't be accepted into the University I'm hoping to transfer into in the fall. That worry usually is what gets me. I'm trying to work on it though!

Great idea. When the mood or need for a reminder strikes, try reaching into the peanut butter jar and reading a slip of paper at random.

great idea, becoming aware of the negative and sorting it out at a safe distance and recording the positive and checking to see if you embraced it are both great exercises. IF you know you're in a negative environment another trick is IALAC

That is such a super idea!! I hope you don't mind me sharing this idea of yours with my group that I go to with people who really really struggle with some bad mental illnesses. I want everybody to do this. It will be a big help to many. emoticon emoticon

I read this poem years ago, obviously great minds think alike, here the poem:

THEN LAUGH...

Build for yourself a strong box

Fashion each part with care

When its as strong as your hand can make it

Put all your troubles there.

Hide there all thought of your failures

And each bitter cup that you quaff

Lock all your heartaches within it

Then sit on the lid and laugh.

Tell no one else its contents

Never its secrets tell

When you've dropped in your care and worry

Keep them forever there.

Hide them from sight so completely

That the world will never dream half;

Fasten the strong box securely

Then sit on the lid and laugh.

I have used a worry jar for years. Now I am able to do it mentally without actually having to write my worries down. However when I get overwhelmed I do write things down and put them in the jar.

It really works and it is amazing when you read them years later and see how far you have come or what still needs work.

Keep us posted.

What's with you but a great idea, especially the satisfaction, ritual and symbology of burning that negative stuff. The next two jars I wash out don't go in the recycle but as my jars of doom and joy. I will even reuse paper I would recycle anyway so the burning is even more fun. (When I was a kid, I could always be talked into taking out the trash. We separated ours in garbage which went in a can and were stinky, but anything burnable when into a 50 gallon drum and I loved setting it on fire!)

Lost 65 lbs and maintained since 2006.

This is a scary thought for me, an idea? Eegads! LOL! I know I posted this as a blog, but I thought it was such a great idea that I felt I had to share it with everyone! Which is why it's posted not only here and in my blog, but also in the 20 Somethings With 50 to 99 to Lose forum!

As I was washing dishes last night, I had to wash a mayo jar and a peanut butter jar and as I was looking at them, I got an idea...

I've seen on this site people who are dealing with negativity, which I'm doing also sadly, and were looking for ways to channel the negativity or use it to their advantage instead of against them. Which is where the Mayo-Jar-O-Doom comes in. My idea was to write anything negative that I had been thinking or feeling that day, fold it up into a little square, and lock it inside that Mayo jar. At the end of the week, I'll take the jar outside, empty out the pieces of paper and burn them. The peanut butter jar I'll use for my "Good Vibrations" jar...where I'll put all the positive things I'm thinking or feeling. And I'll keep them there, safe and sound, so that when I need a pick-me-up, they're there for me to reach in and grab one.

My goal so far is to go one day without putting anything into the Mayo-Jar-O-Doom! Who's with me?!
